Alhamdulillah, everyone enjoyed themselves and we are grateful to have spent this Eid Celebration with our community! Dad – Can I Have $10? A man came home from work late, tired and irritated, to find his 5 year old son waiting for him at the door. “Dad, may I ask you a question?” “Yeah, sure, what is it?” replied the man. “Dad, how much money do you make an hour?” “That’s none of your business! What makes you ask such a thing?” the man said angrily. “I just want to know. Please tell me, how much do you make an hour?” pleaded the little boy. “If you must know, I make $20.00 an hour.” “Oh, ” the little boy replied, head bowed. Looking up, he said, “Dad, may I borrow $10.00 please?” The father was furious. “If the only reason you want to know how much money I make is just so you can borrow some to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed. Think about why you’re being so selfish. I work long, hard hours everyday and don’t have time for such childish games.” November 2014 | calmed down, and started to think he may have been a little hard on his son. May be there was something he really needed to buy with that $10.00 and he really didn’t ask for money very often. The man went to the door of the little boy’s room and opened the door. “Are you asleep son?” he asked. “No dad, I’m awake,” replied the boy. “I’ve been thinking, maybe I was too hard on you earlier,” said the man. “It’s been a long day and I took my aggravation out on you. Here’s that $10.00 you asked for.” The little boy sat straight up, beaming. “Oh, thank you dad!” he yelled. Then, reaching under his pillow, he pulled out some more crumpled up bills. The man, seeing that the boy already had money, started to get angry again. The little boy slowly counted out his money, then looked up at the man. “Why did you want more money if you already had some?” the father grumbled. “Because I didn’t have enough, but now I do,” the little boy replied. “Dad, I have $20.00 now… Can I buy an hour of your time?” Muharram 1436 The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door. The man sat down and started to get even madder about the little boy’s questioning. How dare he ask such questions only to get some money. After an hour or so , the man had 5 The Prayer Center of Orland Park Monthly Newsletter 6 Dua of the Month Upon completing the ablution ْ َّ َ َ َ ََ َ لّ ُ لَى َ ُ ت ع اهلل َوال َح ْول وال ق َّوة إال بِاهلل توك،ِّمْسِب الله Bismillahi, tawakkaltu 3laa Allahi, wa laa hawla wa laa qoowwata illaa billahlaa Allahi, wa laa hawla wa laa qoowwata illaa billah a billah ‘In the name of Allaah, I place my trust in Allaah, and there is no might nor power except with Allaah.’ Words of Wisdom “The best richness is the richness of the soul.” (Bukhari) “Keep yourselves far from envy; because it eats up and takes away good actions, like a fire eats up and burns wood.” (Abu Daud) Challenge Section Picture of the Month Can you guess WHERE and WHAT this picture is? Yasir Qadhi shared with us some practical steps that helped him memorize the Qur’an during his teenage years. Realize it’s a spiritual AND physical project. It’s a miracle and blessing from Allah that you’re able to absorb the Qur’an. If you want to take advantage of this blessing, you should be in a position to receive it and therefore strive physically to achieve it and strive spiritually to get the maximum benefit. 1. Sincerity. The first matter you have to pay attention to is your intention (if you intend good you will get good). Make sure that the intention you are making is only for the sake of Allah , to seek His Pleasure so that insha’Allah, with His Mercy, we will be rewarded in the Aakhirah. It is not to show off in front of others that you have memorized a lot. Sincerity is not a one time factor rather it’s a continual battle that you always have to renew. 2. Consistency. The more frequently you memorize, the easier it becomes. It is very essential to be consistent, and not to skip even one day. There is no weekend in worship. The bare minimum that one should memorize is at least 3 lines, 5 is more ideal. If you are consistent, insha’Allah, you will be able to be huffadh in 5-6 years 3. Timing. The first thing you should do in the day is memorize – even do so before your breakfast, because this is your spiritual breakfast. The best time to memorize is right after Fajr. . (Sh. Yasir used to take one hour to memorize a page in the beginning, and eventually came down to 15-20 minutes) 4. Atmosphere. Have a secluded place to go to and memorize in a place that is quiet. You just can’t memorize properly with distractions, so turn off all your devices (like cell phones) 5. Familiarity: start at the same time, at the same place and use the same mushaf every day. You need to have your own copy of the Mushaf (the Madani Mushaf is highly recommended), it will later become so dear to you. 6. No Magic trick: repeat, repeat, repeat, over and over again. It is just repetitive recitation and/or listening that will help to memorize. 7. Memorize with the meaning: read the translation before you start and try to match the Arabic words with their meanings 8. Surround yourself with recitation: listen to the Qur’an. Before you start memorize, listen to what you are about to memorize. Sh. Husary is highly recommended (see here the best resources to help you memorize) 9. Find a recitation buddy: get a friend, a family member or someone you know who will listen to your recitation every day. Ideally, get someone who is also memorizing to create a peer pressure system. 12. Do not jump around. Be consistent. Don’t try to go to another surah if you find it difficult and stick to the order. That way, you will have the satisfaction of having completed a juz rather than leaving some portions here and there. 13. The three chunks. Start from the back. Shorter surahs will bring you a big boost. You should divide the memorization of the Qur’an in three parts: a) Juz 28, 29, 30 or just Juz 29, 30 b) Surah Al-Kahf till Juz 28 c) Surah Al-Baqara to Surah Al-Kahf (JazakAllah Kheir to those who shared their notes from the class) November 2014 | 11.Triple daily dose: a) New memorization at your assigned time of the day b) Revision of the previous 7 days, just before you start the new memorization: This is because the fastest thing you forget is the new memorization. And doing so, will also build the connector between the old ones and the new portion you are going to memorize. Plus, it will be a good warm up for the brain when you recall from your memory and recite, before you go into the real exercise of doing the new memorization. c) At a later/another time of the day, revise those before the recent 7 days. The bare minimum should be 4-5 pages. Muharram 1436 10. Recite daily in your salah what you have memorized. If you forget one portion, you will immediately rush towards the Qur’an and correct your mistake and you will never do this mistake again. 7 The Prayer Center of Orland Park Monthly Newsletter 8 Quran Academy Programs The Quran Academy programs focused on the theme of the “love of Allah”. Students in each of the programs learned about what it entails to know Allah, His religion, and His Prophets so that they understand what it means to love him; furthermore, students learned that they need to demonstrate their love for Allah (SWT) by implementing Islam in all facets of their lives. Each program adapted the theme to relate it accurately to their developmental age group as well as to the content of the curriculum taught. Alhamdulilah, this was another successful launch to a new school year and we are excited to share our current and upcoming achievements with our community. Quran Blossom students learned how to express their love for Allah (SWT) and follow in the footsteps of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) by helping those in need. Our annual Hajj project was a wonderful hands-on activity that allowed our students to experience the holy pilgrimage to Mecca. Our students also worked diligently to collect non perishable food items to give to the Mosque Foundation Food Pantry as a way of demonstrating their love of Allah (SWT) by helping others in a selfless act. I’mar Center students immersed themselves in the theme by participating in numerous in class and extracurricular activities that focused on loving Allah. The majority of students in I’mar fasted the nine days of Thul – Hijja and partook in a group Iftar. After praying together, students were guided on the Islamic etiquettes of eating and breaking fast through the sunnah of the Prophet (pbuh) as a means of worship. Furthermore, students performed the rituals of Hajj guided by Sheikh Zakariya who explained to them the significance of every step. We know young people enjoy indoor/outdoor activities and social interaction with their peers; therefore, it is important that we provide these avenues of interaction if we want them to be open to hearing the teachings of Islam. The goal of the OPPC programs is to provide knowledge, opportunity and community under the roof of Islam so that we help our children learn to balance their physical, emotional, and spiritual needs as they navigate this very challenging world. In shaa Allah. Through these programs, we strive to nurture a sense of the following: • Belief: Love for Allah (swt), Islamic Understanding, and Pride in Islam • Self: Prophetic Character, Leadership, and Pursuit of Knowledge • Community: Sense of Ummah, Outreach, Service, Family, and Attachment to Masjid Tuesday Night Live (TNL) Tuesday Night Live (TNL) – Islamic principles and the concept of brotherhood/sisterhood is presented by teaching the audience about Islam, but also having them interact/learn through each “segment” made up of video, lecture, games, food & prizes. At the Masjid, children often receive criticism for their noise, for how they dress, for playing basketball instead of praying Sunnah, and so on. In the schoolyard, children receive praise for their jokes, their clothes, and their athletic abilities. Where will our children prefer to spend their time? Children thrive where they feel a sense of belonging. If we want our children to feel they belong in the Muslim community, they must feel welcome at the Masjid. Children running in the hallway or playing basketball in the parking lot are not signs of a rowdy Masjid or misbehaving children. They are signs of a flourishing community in which children are building friendships that will connect their hearts and minds to the Masjid. Children need to develop this connection from the beginning. Once they are older and comfortable ‘hanging out’ elsewhere, it might be too late to bring the Masjid into their hearts. Tolerating a bit of noise and play is a small sacrifice for building a positive future Muslim community.
