Funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation, our research is harnessing anonymised mobile phone usage data to map the movements of populations in and between malaria ‘hotspots’. Understanding the movements of a country’s population can be crucial in eliminating malaria. Groundbreaking research at Southampton uses antibodies to reprogramme the immune system allowing tumours to be recognised and even eliminated. Our main Highfield Campus is home to three of the UK’s leading arts venues, the John Hansard Gallery, the Nuffield Theatre and the Turner Sims Concert Hall. Southampton has a rich aviation heritage, with the Spitfire, the fighter aircraft that won the Battle of Britain, developed in the region in the 1930s. A coastal location Southampton has one of the biggest commercial ports in Europe, and the city is known across the world as the home of the giant cruise liners, Queen Elizabeth, Queen Mary 2 and Queen Victoria.
