since 2005, Nickel Brook has quickly developed a reputation for having a
lively and enticing line up of beers. It is their business to offer customers an
unrivaled experience designed to surpass expectations. Their accumulation
of a diversified product line, partnered with superior service, has
established a loyal following in the surrounding area. Nickel Brook proudly
use only the finest natural ingredients from all over the world and brew
them in small batches for the highest standard of quality. Their purpose and
objective is to be an acknowledged market leader in the quality and service
offered to customers in whatever community they participate in. They firmly
believe that their practice of craft brewing, dedication to outstanding quality
and thorough customer service, is what has separated them from their

Research Promotion Report
Hello ASHRAE Hamilton! I
trust everyone is having a
excellent start to the fall; I
am certainly enjoying the
change of colours as I
drive through the diverse
region of our chapter. We
had some great events
over the past month, and
I’m looking forward to the rest of the year.
October was a great month for us. The Building
Commissioning Association (BCA) forum held at
McMaster was a great success. We saw a number
of new faces to ASHRAE (but not new to our local
industry) out at the meeting. Additionally, we had
a number of students and grad students attend and
demonstrated great engagement with our Student
Activities Chair (Mark Long), Young Engineers in
ASHRAE Chair (Ryley Besseling), Regional Vice
Chair Student Activities (Robyn Ellis), and YEA
Regional Chair (Audrey Dupuis). It’s a VERY rare
occasion to have these four together in a room to
encourage the participation of new young members
in our chapter. We are especially appreciative of
Audrey’s visit as she made the trip in from Montreal
to visit with us.
Attached to this month's Airways is a "Research
Promotion Report." Please check out the details
and give generously to support ASHRAE projects.

YEA Happenings
On October 4th, YEA (Young Engineers in
ASHRAE) and student members from our
Hamilton Chapter engaged in an Ultimate Frisbee
match with a similar team from the London
Chapter.
On November 14th, the Chapter will be sponsoring
a YEA "pub night" at Shoeless Joe's in Burlington.
See the attachments to this month's Airways for
further information on both of the above events.

FREE ASHRAE Webcast
Also in October was the YEA and Student Ultimate
Frisbee tournament between London and Hamilton
chapters. I realized that my cardio isn’t what it was
when I was a student and have now stepped up my
exercise regime!! Everyone had a great time and
were already brainstorming future events; a ski trip
this winter may be in the works.
November is another month that will have two
events. The first will be the Chapter meeting and
the Nicklebrook Brewery on the 11th. That will be
followed by a YEA social and networking night at
Shoeless Joe’s. Both events will be held in
Burlington.
Hope to see you out at the next event!

Research Promotion - Report
Welcome to fall and sure enough soon we will be into winter. We are into a new ASHRAE year and with
that come the responsibility of the Chapter to raise funds for ASHRAE research activities. Our Goal this
year is $8,500 and we fully intend to meet and exceed this goal with the help and support of all our
members. Contributions start at $100 and the best and easiest way to contribute is via the following link
(www.ashrae.org/contribute) or to contact me personally.
In this report I would like to highlight a few question and answers that some of you may have concerning
research. See below:
What is the ASHRAE Research Program?
The program that governors’ more than 80 investigative projects taking place around the world and
funded by ASHRAE. It is supported by more than 100 member-led Technical Committees (TCs), each
with their own specialty and sub-specialty.
How are the projects selected?
A TC identifies a need – such as missing information, new ideas or processes to be examined, outdated information – sets a goal, and outlines a project to meet that need and goal. the Research
Administration Committee (RAC) approves the proposed project. It then goes out to‘bid’, ensuring
that ASHRAE’s financial resources are spent wisely and the final product willmeet all stated goals.
How much is spent on Research?
With more than 80 projects taking place at any one time, the average Research Budget typically
exceeds $17 million, each project costing an average of $250,000 each. In reality, there is a wide range
of costs for projects. Grants-in-Aid – projects being conducted by Graduate level students – have a cost
of $10,000. There are also multiple research projects that – over the 3-5 year life of the project – cost
over $1 million.
Where can I find specific information about a project?
Check out www.ashrae.org/research . If you need further information please contact myself or Dave
Rasmussen and we will be happy to help answer your questions or direct you to another staff member
who specializes in that area.

ASHRAE is excited to return to Chicago for the 2015 Winter Conference, its historically
best-attended event. Attendees can discuss the latest topics in the building industry; participate in technical tours; attend ASHRAE Learning Institute courses; earn professional
credits; and obtain ASHRAE certifications. Chicago also serves as the site of the AHR
Expo, co-sponsored by ASHRAE and held in conjunction with the Winter Conference.
The two events combine to create the ideal atmosphere for those interested in advancing the building industry to network, inspect the latest technology and learn about the
newest practices for the built environment. Don’t miss the chance to participate!
