Background
OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST
The Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP) is UNESCO’s
first education-related category 1 institute towards the development and promotion of new approaches to
education for a more peaceful and sustainable world. The Institute based in New Delhi, India, aims to
contribute to the conceptualization, design and formulation of regional and sub-regional strategies in
education for peace and sustainable development, in particular through South-South and triangular NorthSouth-South cooperation. MGIEP plans to provide an integrated approach to education for peace and
sustainable development.
The Institute is looking for a dynamic and out of box thinker with innovative ideas for: (i) embedding
principles and concepts of peace, sustainable development and global citizenship within curricula; (ii)
establishing strategic partnerships with ministries, schools and other stakeholders to contribute to the
implementation of the Global Action Plan, the U.N. Secretary General’s Global Education For All and the
beyond 2015 development agenda; (iii) developing innovative tools for educators on peace, sustainable
development and global citizenship; and (iv) resource mobilization to support the scaling up of initiatives to
achieve economies of scale in implementation and impact.
Duties and Responsibilities
Under the overall authority of the Director of the Institute and the direct supervision of Senior Project
Officer, and in close collaboration with other units, the incumbent will serve as Project Officer, and shall
coordinate the planning, development, implementation of programme and projects of MGIEP Institute, in
particular:
Main Activities:
− Coordinate, manage and monitor the implementation of the curricular assessment and monitoring,
and the curricular revision, integration and development components within the Education for
Peace, Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship program;
− Establish and maintain contact with relevant UNESCO offices and institutes and Ministries of
Education with a view to support their capacity building for the planning and implementation of
Education for Peace, Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship at all levels within the
education system;
− Identify and coordinate analytical research on educational developments, especially in formal
education policy and practice within Education for Peace, Sustainable Development and Global
Citizenship and overall alignment with education programme development and management;

EDUCATION
Identify and analyse information and reports in line with global developments and international
commitments for education in peace, sustainable development and global citizenship;
Implement, coordinate, monitor and advocate for Projects related to Education for peace, sustainable
development and Global Citizenship;
Consult and liaise with multilateral and bilateral development partners to develop joint projects,
programmes and activities related to the education for Education for peace, sustainable development
and Global Citizenship with particular emphasis on resource mobilisation.
Prepare and contribute to the information presented on the Institute’s website and elsewhere.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Advanced University degree (Master or equivalent) in education development, education planning and
management, or any social science related to peace, sustainable development and global citizenship; Ph.D. is
preferable.
WORK EXPERIENCE
At least 4 years of professional experience, of which 2 or 3 years at international level particularly in one or more
of the following areas: advanced knowledge on peace, sustainable development and global citizenship, curricular
development (online and textbooks), and, pedagogy techniques and methods.
SKILLS/COMPETENCIES
• Experience of education database analytical research;
• Sound knowledge of the general and education-specific situations in the Asia-Pacific region; Good
knowledge of education for Peace, Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship;
• Strong writing and editing skills to communicate information and knowledge into various formats;
concepts, papers for government authorities, stakeholders and associated partners;
• Good documentation and analytical skills and logical mind set to design proposal recommendations;
• Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to work in a team and multi-cultural environment;
LANGUAGES
Fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language would be considered as
an asset.

UNESCO’s salaries are calculated in US dollars and exempt from income tax. They consist of a basic salary and a
post adjustment which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station and exchange rates.
Other benefits include: 30 days annual leave, family allowance, home travel, education grant for dependent
children, pension plan and medical insurance.
