6th Annual Nursing Research & Evidence-Based Practice Symposium Real & Ideal: Identifying the Mismatches Oral & Poster Presentations: Nursing Research Evidence-Based Practice Quality Improvement Keynote Speaker: Patricia A. Grady, PhD, RN, FAAN Director, National Institute for Nursing Research -3 Tutorial Workshops begin Thursday afternoon! November 13 - 14, 2014 DoubleTree by Hilton ~ So. Burlington, Vermont Best Rates before October 31 Register online at: http://www.uvm.edu/~kappatau/ Welcome Message from the Symposium Chair... On behalf of this year’s Symposium Planning Committee, it is my pleasure to invite you to The 6th Annual Nursing Research and Evidence Based Practice Symposium. Our theme this year is Real & Ideal: Identifying the Mismatches. Every day nurses identify mismatches in our practice which are ripe areas for research. We are thrilled that Dr. Patricia Grady, Director for the National Institute for Nursing Research will serve as our keynote speaker. As an accomplished researcher and leader in the neuroscience field, Dr. Grady will surely inspire us to discover discrepancies in our areas of study for future exploration. The Annual Symposium will showcase a sampling of the incredible work nurses in our region are investigating to improve healthcare outcomes. Whether you practice at the bedside, in a patient’s home, in a clinic, or as an educator or nurse leader, the Symposium offers opportunities to network and learn about novel practice approaches. We hope that you will participate in the annual Honor the Nurse presentation by paying tribute to a nurse who has been instrumental in your career. This musical dedication occurs at the Thursday evening’s ever-popular free reception, where posters are presented, networking opportunities abound, and SUNY Plattsburgh and University of Vermont nursing students have opportunity to intermingle with novice and veteran nurses. Special thanks to the Planning Committee, for their time and efforts in creating this extraordinary annual event. We would also like to thank our dedicated professional conference planner, Julie Basol, who keeps us on task and brings her expertise and wisdom to our team. Please join us on an adventure in learning at from this year’s Symposium. Marcy, MD MPH Professor Emeritus University of Vermont 2:30-3:30PM The issue of QIP vs. research is an active area of debate. Join us for a discussion on how to figure this out and make the subject less gray. • Research: "Research means a systematic investigation, including research development, testing and evaluation, designed to develop or contribute to generalizable knowledge." • General description of a QI project: Implementing a practice known to improve care and collecting data for administrative, clinical, or reporting purposes (not contributing to, or advancing, generalizable knowledge) Objectives: Explain three ethical principles that provide the analytic framework for how the human subject research regulations are interpreted. Discuss the role of the Institutional Review Board and how the review process is accomplished. Describe the common issues that occur when seeking IRB approval, including how to approach the question of whether the work is a quality assessment/improvement project versus research, as defined by the regulations. Dr. Theodore Marcy has been a member (since 2004) and the current chair (since 2008) of the Committee on Human Research in the Behavioral and Social Sciences and an alternate member of the Committee on Human Research in the Medical Sciences. In these positions, he has reviewed countless protocols and worked with investigators on altering their protocols to conform to the regulations on human research. He has also given talks and seminars to undergraduates and graduate students. As a researcher, he has also submitted his own protocols to the Institutional Review Board.
