Welcome
Message from the Symposium Chair...
On behalf of this year’s Symposium Planning Committee, it is my pleasure to invite you to
The 6th Annual Nursing Research and Evidence Based Practice Symposium. Our theme this
year is Real & Ideal: Identifying the Mismatches. Every day nurses identify mismatches in
our practice which are ripe areas for research. We are thrilled that Dr. Patricia Grady,
Director for the National Institute for Nursing Research will serve as our keynote speaker.
As an accomplished researcher and leader in the neuroscience field, Dr. Grady will surely
inspire us to discover discrepancies in our areas of study for future exploration.
The Annual Symposium will showcase a sampling of the incredible work nurses in our region
are investigating to improve healthcare outcomes. Whether you practice at the bedside, in
a patient’s home, in a clinic, or as an educator or nurse leader, the Symposium offers opportunities to network and learn about novel practice approaches.
We hope that you will participate in the annual Honor the Nurse presentation by paying
tribute to a nurse who has been instrumental in your career. This musical dedication occurs
at the Thursday evening’s ever-popular free reception, where posters are presented, networking opportunities abound, and SUNY Plattsburgh and University of Vermont nursing
students have opportunity to intermingle with novice and veteran nurses.
Special thanks to the Planning Committee, for their time and efforts in creating this extraordinary annual event. We
would also like to thank our dedicated professional conference planner, Julie Basol, who keeps us on task and brings
her expertise and wisdom to our team. Please join us on an adventure in learning at from this year’s Symposium.

Working Successfully with the
Institutional Review Board
Theodore W. Marcy, MD MPH
Professor Emeritus
University of Vermont
2:30-3:30PM
The issue of QIP vs. research is an active area of debate. Join us
for a discussion on how to figure this out and make the subject less gray.
• Research: "Research means a systematic investigation, including
research development, testing and evaluation, designed to develop or
contribute to generalizable knowledge."
• General description of a QI project: Implementing a practice known to improve care and
collecting data for administrative, clinical, or reporting purposes (not contributing to, or
advancing, generalizable knowledge)
Objectives:
 Explain three ethical principles that provide the analytic framework for how the human subject research
regulations are interpreted.
 Discuss the role of the Institutional Review Board and how the review process is accomplished.
 Describe the common issues that occur when seeking IRB approval, including how to approach the question of
whether the work is a quality assessment/improvement project versus research, as defined by the regulations.
Dr. Theodore Marcy has been a member (since 2004) and the current chair (since 2008) of the Committee on Human
Research in the Behavioral and Social Sciences and an alternate member of the Committee on Human Research in the
Medical Sciences. In these positions, he has reviewed countless protocols and worked with investigators on altering
their protocols to conform to the regulations on human research. He has also given talks and seminars to undergraduates and graduate students. As a researcher, he has also submitted his own protocols to the Institutional Review Board.

Did you know that PubMed contains a large amount of nursing
literature? This free database is accessible from anywhere and
easy to use. Whether you’re new to PubMed or need a refresher, pick up tips and tricks for getting the most out of PubMed. We’ll review basic navigation skills for conducting a literature search and obtaining full text articles, and then explore
more sophisticated techniques and features to improve your
search. Learn how to set up an NCBI account to manage your
research and results. Bring your PubMed questions and stumpers! Suitable for all levels.
Alice Stokes, MLIS is Library Assistant Professor at the Dana
Medical Library, University of Vermont. Alice offers instruction
on research databases and mobile library resources. She is CoCoordinator of Dana Medical Library's Information Services.
She acts as a liaison to Nursing at Fletcher Allen and is a member of the Fletcher Allen Nursing Research Collaborative.

In Google Scholar: Basics and Beyond, participants will learn
how to effectively and efficiently search Google Scholar for
high quality, evidence-based, information. Specifically, we will
cover how to use Advanced Search features and limiters to zero
in on relevant results, track related research literature, and
manage everything we find. If you're frustrated with all of the
junk you find doing a regular Google search, you'll be amazed
at how great Google Scholar is.
Gary Atwood is the Health Sciences Education Librarian at the
University of Vermont's Dana Medical Library. He graduated
from the University of Maine with a MA in American History and
from Simmons College with a MSLIS in Library Science. He has
over 15 years of experience teaching people how to find information as well as how to use technology to manage the resources they find.

Honor the Nurse: My Mentor in Nursing
Each year, the Symposium features an HONOR THE NURSE presentation. As we discussed the Symposium theme,
Real & Ideal: Identifying the Mismatches, the conversation evolved into a sharing of stories of why we
chose nursing as a profession. The Honor the Nurse theme for 2014 is: My Mentor in Nursing.
We invite you to share with us, the people who inspired you early in your nursing career.
CVPH Medical Center members of the Planning Committee invite you to submit a digital photo (send in JPEG file format)
of a colleague you would like to honor, along with their name, place of employment, and department name, along with
a one sentence description of why you are honoring them. Email your Honor a Nurse submission to both Elli Collins:
[email protected] and copy Kathleen Carey: [email protected] no later than Monday, November 3.
(Group pictures are acceptable) Honorees are not required to attend or be registered for the Symposium.
The presentation will take place during Thursday evening’s Poster Reception and also be posted on the Kappa Tau Web
site after the Symposium. For more information, contact Julie Basol, Symposium Director: 802 598-7424.
