Randy Newman’s
balancing act
n a technological feat that gives scientists their first opportunity to dig
into a remnant of the early solar
system, the European Space Agency’s Rosetta mission successfully
placed a small spacecraft on the surface of
a speeding comet Wednesday.
With this achievement, a comet is no
longer a mysterious and sometimes frightening spray of light across the night sky,
but another member of the solar system to
be explored, like the moon and Mars. The
technology of landing on a comet, with its
wisps of gravity, could be applied to future
efforts to mine asteroids.
The agency’s director-general, JeanJacques Dordain, described the touchdown on Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, a 2.5-mile-wide ball of rock, ice and
dust moving faster than 40,000 mph, as “a
big step for human civilization.”

Moscow denied the allegation as

TAMPA — Bay area leaders will gather at
Tampa International Airport today to announce
a new nonstop flight to one of the airport’s most
coveted international destinations: Frankfurt,
Germany.
Lufthansa German Airlines CEO Karl Garnadt said in October that Tampa is one of
the carrier’s top targets for a new series of
low-cost, long-haul flights set to launch in fall
2015. Tampa was the only U.S. city the CEO
listed.
Garnadt told the aviation news website Runway Girl Network that Lufthansa’s new service
— called “Jump” — will offer fewer first-class
seats in order to add more business and economy seats to serve overseas destinations including Tampa; Panama City, Panama; Cancun, Mexico; Cape Town, South Africa; and a few cities in
Southeast Asia.
Local officials will make the announcement
at the airport at 10 a.m. today. In the past, such
announcements have preceded the start of new
air service from Tampa to: Cuba, continental
Europe, Latin America and the Pacific Northwest.

2011, he was tasked with bringing international

TALLAHASSEE — One week after clinching
a new term, Gov. Rick Scott shifted his focus to
the future Tuesday, promising more money for

Scott’s favorite for the most

Students suffer through hunger game

ST. PETERSBURG — “Welcome to the good life,” said the
butler, pulling out a chair from
the table covered in red and
cream linens, flowers at the center, the silverware set. “Sit down
wherever you’d like.”
Henry Sadler, 20, would have
liked to have done that. The
smell of garlic bread was a case

selection, and he’d never have to
fill his own water glass.
But the little card he’d been
handed at the front door
informed Sadler, a sophomore at
Eckerd College, that the good life
was not for him. He lived in poverty, and would have to go sit on
