The vast majority of people living with prediabetes do not know they have it. A person with prediabetes has a blood sugar level higher than normal, but not high enough for a diagnosis of diabetes. Prediabetes is a serious health condition that increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Am I at risk? Many factors can increase your risk for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. Risk factors can include: • • • • being a woman who has had a baby weighing more than nine pounds at birth having a parent, sister or brother with diabetes being younger than 65 years of age and getting little or no exercise in a typical day being 45 years of age or older The CDC-led National Diabetes Prevention Program, can help participants adopt the healthy habits needed to prevent type 2 diabetes. Trained lifestyle coaches from Tampa General Hospital will lead this 16-week program and follow up support groups. This program is designed to help participants achieve optimal weight and maintain healthier lifestyles by: improving their food choices, increasing physical activity, and learning coping skills. This program requires a 16-week commitment and is followed by the opportunity for ongoing support. If you qualify for this 16-week program, you will receive a recommendation form for your healthcare provider to complete.
