To find out more about the National
Diabetes Prevention Program, go to:
www.cdc.gov/diabetes/prevention
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that more than
79 million Americans age 20 and older, have prediabetes. The vast majority of people
living with prediabetes do not know they have it. A person with prediabetes has a
blood sugar level higher than normal, but not high enough for a diagnosis of diabetes.
Prediabetes is a serious health condition that increases the risk of developing type
2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke.
Am I at risk?
Many factors can increase your risk for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes.
Risk factors can include:
•
•
•
•
being a woman who has had a baby weighing more than nine pounds at birth
having a parent, sister or brother with diabetes
being younger than 65 years of age and getting little or no exercise in a typical day
being 45 years of age or older
The CDC-led National Diabetes Prevention Program, can help participants adopt
the healthy habits needed to prevent type 2 diabetes. Trained lifestyle coaches
from Tampa General Hospital will lead this 16-week program and follow up
support groups. This program is designed to help participants achieve optimal
weight and maintain healthier lifestyles by: improving their food choices,
increasing physical activity, and learning coping skills.
This program requires a 16-week commitment and is followed by the opportunity for
ongoing support.
If you qualify for this 16-week program, you will receive a recommendation form for
your healthcare provider to complete. You must return a copy of it to your lifestyle
coach during a program session before February 15, 2015.
