Celebrating 122 Years of Ministry
THE TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST
HONORING OUR VETERANS
Saturday, November 15, 2014 & Sunday, November 16, 2014
Welcome!
We are happy to have you with us today. If you are a guest, please introduce yourself and ask
an usher for a Welcome Packet. We welcome children and encourage you to worship together
as a family often. Families with small children might want to consider sitting in the front pews
to better enable their children to see and participate in the worship service. "Busy Bags" that
contain quiet activities for restless children are located at the rear of the church and you are
welcome to borrow one if needed. If your child needs a diaper change, to be fed or comforted
during worship, please ask an usher to direct you to the infant area just beyond the narthex.
A Word from Pastor
This week we celebrated Veterans Day. It is a day set aside to give thanks for all of those men
and women who fought, and sometimes died, so that we may lead our lives in freedom. I
think that the collective soldiers of these United States deserve much more credit for our
freedom than they receive. The U.S. military has been an incredible force for freedom. They
are not sent to occupy or to enrich. Instead they are sent to free men and enable them to live
in peace and quiet. I can think of only one who has endured more, and saved more, than
these soldiers. That is Jesus the Son of God. Just like U.S. troops landing on occupied soil, He
came to liberate. He was willing to do what was required, even to die on a cross, so that we
could be free from our sin and the power of the devil. What an incredible sacrifice it is to give
your life so that others can remain free. Thank you to our soldiers for the freedom we hold so
dear in this nation, and give thanks unto God, He has sent His Son and made you free indeed.
1
Services on Saturday and Sunday will follow Divine Service Setting Three beginning on p. 184
in the Lutheran Service Book, with Confession and Absolution.
Welcome
Opening Hymn “Now Thank We All Our God”
1
Now thank we all our God
With hearts and hands and voices,
Who wondrous things has done,
In whom His world rejoices;
Who from our mothers’ arms
Has blest us on our way
With countless gifts of love
And still is ours today.
2
Oh, may this bounteous God
Through all our life be near us,
With ever joyful hearts
And blessèd peace to cheer us
And keep us in His grace
And guide us when perplexed
And free us from all ills
In this world and the next!
3
All praise and thanks to God
The Father now be given,
The Son, and Him who reigns
With them in highest heaven,
The one eternal God,
Whom earth and heav’n adore;
For thus it was, is now,
And shall be evermore.

Confession and Absolution (p.184-185)
P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.
2
P Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto
God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us
forgiveness.
P
C
P
C
Our help is in the name of the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.
I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord,
and You forgave the iniquity of my sin.
Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination.
Left Column
P O almighty God, merciful Father,
C I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with
which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and
eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of
them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy,
innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be
gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being.
P Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained
servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead
and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name
of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.
Service of the Word (p.186)
Psalm (spoken responsively)
Psalm 46:1–11
1
God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble.
2
Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way,
though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,
3
though its waters roar and foam,
though the mountains tremble at its swelling.
3
4
There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy habitation of the Most High.
5
God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved;
God will help her when morning dawns.
6
The nations rage, the kingdoms totter;
he utters his voice, the earth melts.
7
The LORD of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.
8
Come, behold the works of the LORD,
how he has brought desolations on the earth.
9
He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
he breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
he burns the chariots with fire.
10
“Be still, and know that I am God.
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!”
11
The LORD of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.
Gloria Patri (p.186)
Kyrie (p.186)
C Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.
Gloria in Excelsis (p. 187)
P Glory be to God on High,
C and on earth peace, goodwill toward men.
We praise Thee, we bless Thee, we worship Thee.
we glorify Thee, we give thanks to Thee, for Thy great glory.
O Lord God, heav'nly King, God the Father Almighty.
O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ;
O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father,
4
that takest away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us.
Thou that takest away the sin of the world, receive our prayer.
Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us.
For Thou only art holy; Thou only art the Lord.
Thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost,
art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.
Collect of the Day (p.189)
Pastor: Let us pray:
Almighty and ever-living God, You have given exceedingly great and precious promises to
those who trust in You. Dispel from us the works of darkness and grant us to live in the light
of Your Son, Jesus Christ, that our faith may never be found wanting; through the same
Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and
forever.
People: Amen.
Old Testament Reading
Isaiah 61:1–11
1
The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me,
because the LORD has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor;
he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
2
to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor,
and the day of vengeance of our God;
to comfort all who mourn;
3
to grant to those who mourn in Zion—
to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes,
the oil of gladness instead of mourning,
the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit;
that they may be called oaks of righteousness,
the planting of the LORD, that he may be glorified.
4
They shall build up the ancient ruins;
they shall raise up the former devastations;
they shall repair the ruined cities,
the devastations of many generations.
5
5
Strangers shall stand and tend your flocks;
foreigners shall be your plowmen and vinedressers;
6
but you shall be called the priests of the LORD;
they shall speak of you as the ministers of our God;
you shall eat the wealth of the nations,
and in their glory you shall boast.
7
Instead of your shame there shall be a double portion;
instead of dishonor they shall rejoice in their lot;
therefore in their land they shall possess a double portion;
they shall have everlasting joy.
8
For I the LORD love justice;
I hate robbery and wrong;
I will faithfully give them their recompense,
and I will make an everlasting covenant with them.
9
Their offspring shall be known among the nations,
and their descendants in the midst of the peoples;
all who see them shall acknowledge them,
that they are an offspring the LORD has blessed.
10
I will greatly rejoice in the LORD;
my soul shall exult in my God,
for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation;
he has covered me with the robe of righteousness,
as a bridegroom decks himself like a priest with a beautiful headdress,
and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
11
For as the earth brings forth its sprouts,
and as a garden causes what is sown in it to sprout up,
so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise
to sprout up before all the nations.
Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God.
Gradual (spoken responsively) Rev. 7:14b; Ps. 84:5
These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation.
They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the
6
Lamb.
Blessèd are those whose strength is in you,
in whose heart are the highways to Zion.
Epistle Reading
Galatians 5:1, 13–15
1
For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit
again to a yoke of slavery.
13
For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an
opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. 14For the whole
law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 15But if you
bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one
another.
Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God.
Alleluia and Verse (p.190)
C Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.
Holy Gospel
Luke 4:14–21
Leader: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the fourth chapter.
People: Glory be to Thee, O Lord.
14
And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and a report about
him went out through all the surrounding country. 15And he taught in their
synagogues, being glorified by all.
16
And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his
custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read.
17
And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and
found the place where it was written,
18
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and recovering of sight to the blind,
7
to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
19
20
And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And
the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21And he began to say to
them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”
Leader: This is the Gospel of the Lord.
People: Praise be to Thee, O Christ.
Apostles’ Creed (p.192)
C I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day He rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Christian Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life T everlasting. Amen.
Children's Message
Sermon Hymn “Praise the One Who Breaks the Darkness”
1
Praise the One who breaks the darkness
With a liberating light;
8
LSB 849
Praise the One who frees the pris’ners,
Turning blindness into sight.
Praise the One who preached the Gospel,
Healing ev’ry dread disease,
Calming storms, and feeding thousands
With the very Bread of peace.
2
Praise the One who blessed the children
With a strong, yet gentle, word;
Praise the One who drove out demons
With the piercing, two-edged sword.
Praise the One who brings cool water
To the desert’s burning sand;
From this Well comes living water,
Quenching thirst in ev’ry land.
3
Let us praise the Word Incarnate,
Christ, who suffered in our place.
Jesus died and rose victorious
That we may know God by grace.
Let us sing for joy and gladness,
Seeing what our God has done;
Let us praise the true Redeemer,
Praise the One who makes us one.
Sermon
Offertory (p.192-193)
C Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from Thy presence, and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me.
Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation, and uphold me with Thy free spirit.
Amen.
Offering
Matthew 25:30 “And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness.” Why did the
worthless servant act the way he did? Because of what he believed about the Master. He
didn’t trust or love the Master – and so he did not demonstrate love and trust in his
9
actions, but rather hate and mistrust. It’s the same with us, but in reverse: since we know
our Lord God to be faithful and kind, we desire to serve Him and render faithful service
with what He has given us.
The Prayers
Since the days of the Apostles the churches Communion practice has remained constant. It
follows I Corinthians 10 and 11, where the Apostle Paul warns the Church to know the true
Body and Blood of Christ is in and with the Bread and Wine. St. Paul warns, “Whoever,
therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty
concerning the body and blood of the Lord. Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of
the bread and drink of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body
eats and drinks judgment on himself.” Since we want no one harmed by the strong body and
blood of Jesus, we ask if you have not been instructed and received into membership in the
Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, please talk to our Pastor or elder before communing.* We do
not ask this out of a spirit of superiority, or in order to be mean, but out of care and concern for
our brothers and sisters.* Elders will be at the rear of the church and wearing an "Elder" badge.
(Children not yet confirmed in the Lutheran faith may also come to the Lord’s table, and receive
a blessing.) For those who choose, non-alcoholic wine is in the center of the tray with
individual cups.

“The Son of God Goes Forth to War” LSB 661
1
The Son of God goes forth to war
A kingly crown to gain.
His blood-red banner streams afar;
Who follows in His train?
Who best can drink His cup of woe,
Triumphant over pain,
Who patient bears his cross below—
He follows in His train.
2
The martyr first, whose eagle eye
Could pierce beyond the grave,
Who saw his master in the sky
And called on Him to save.
11
Like Him, with pardon on His tongue
In midst of mortal pain,
He prayed for those who did the wrong—
Who follows in his train?
3
A glorious band, the chosen few,
On whom the Spirit came,
Twelve valiant saints—their hope they knew
And mocked the cross and flame.
They met the tyrant’s brandished steel,
The lion’s gory mane;
They bowed their necks their death to feel—
Who follows in their train?
4
A noble army, men and boys,
The matron and the maid,
Around the Savior’s throne rejoice,
In robes of light arrayed.
They climbed the steep ascent of heav’n
Through peril, toil, and pain.
O God, to us may grace be giv’n
To follow in their train!

Closing Hymn “Sing with All the Saints in Glory” LSB 671
1
Sing with all the saints in glory,
Sing the resurrection song!
Death and sorrow, earth’s dark story,
To the former days belong.
All around the clouds are breaking;
Soon the storms of time shall cease;
In God’s likeness we awaken,
Knowing everlasting peace.
2
Oh, what glory, far exceeding
All that eye has yet perceived!
Holiest hearts for ages pleading
Never that full joy conceived.
God has promised, Christ prepares it;
There on high our welcome waits.
Ev’ry humble spirit shares it,
Christ has passed the_eternal gates.
3
Life eternal! Heav’n rejoices:
Jesus lives who once was dead.
Shout with joy, O deathless voices!
Child of God, lift up your head!
Life eternal! Oh, what wonders
Crowd on faith; what joy unknown,
When, amid earth’s closing thunders,
Saints shall stand before the throne!

NEWS FROM YOUR SCHOOL, CONCORDIA!
CLASSROOM NOTES from Mrs. Judy Schwaegerle (5th Grade Teacher & Asst. Principal-South)
(Each week a different teacher makes a report.)
While some people may fear death, the fifth graders know they don’t need to. The fifth
graders led chapel and showed in a skit how Jesus has already taken our guilty verdict from
us. We know just how deep God’s love is for us.
The fifth grade read The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in preparation for traveling
to Lutheran High to see their version on stage. It was interesting to see the differences
between the book, the movie and the play.
How many solutions and mixtures can you find in your pantry? The fifth graders have
been searching since they started their new unit in science. We made root beer floats and
compared the concentrations by using the same amount of drink mix in different amounts of
water. Our first attempt at making Borax crystals let us talk about why things don’t always
turn out like we expect them to.
We have begun working with fractions in math. We have been comparing them and will
begin adding and subtracting them next week.
TRAVEL TO OUR NATION’S CAPITAL
Have you seen the WWII Memorial? Have you ever been in the National Cathedral? Have you
ever seen the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns? Have you toured George
and Martha’s place? Have you been inside the Lutheran Seminary chapel at Gettysburg? Have
you always wanted to? You can join our 7th & 8th grade trip to Washington, D.C. and
Gettysburg this coming May. The four day trip includes all of the above and much more. The
dates are May 18-22, 2015. The all-inclusive price (travel, lodging, meals, and all tours) is $969
for double occupancy. Help us fill the bus and join the tour. Contact David Kusch at
[email protected] if interested.

PULL TAB COMPETITION (GO BLUE!)- bring in yours pull tabs by November 23rd!
Thanks to everyone who has been collecting pull tabs from pop and beer cans. Now we have a
special request. The Ronald McDonald House in Ann Arbor (where we take the pull tabs) and
the Ronald McDonald House in Columbus, Ohio, are having a competition to see who can
collect the most pull tabs by the time of the Michigan-Ohio State game. We can't have Ohio
beat Michigan, so here's a special request to save those pull tabs and bring them to the
container in the hallway. Pull tabs from pop, beer, V-8, soup, fruit, or anything else counts!
The container will be emptied weekly, and we'll keep you informed of how many we have
collected. The families who are able to stay at the Ronald McDonald House thank you!
* Since the competition began between the Ronald McDonald House of Ann Arbor and the
Ronald McDonald House of Columbus, St. Paul's, Hosanna Tabor, and Concordia School have
collected 73 pounds of pull tabs! That's a lot of pull tabs! Keep bringing the tabs until
Sunday, November 23. GO BLUE
STEWARDSHIP CORNER
What is your state of mind as you approach this Thanksgiving season? Do you have an attitude
of true thankfulness or do you feel that your needs and desires are not really being met? Your
attitude depends on where you’re looking – outward or upward. The Apostle Paul wrote “…I
consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my
Lord . . . I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ . . .” (Philippians 3:8). Look up – and be
grateful for what’s really important!
THE LUTHERAN HOUR - November 23 -"Clean – And Thankful!" - Lutheran Hour Speaker:
Rev. Gregory Seltz . Thanksgiving is not just a made-up holiday; it’s an attitude that is the key
to life. (Luke 17:11-19) Listen to “The Lutheran Hour” every Sunday on Detroit WDFN (1130) @ 6:30 a.m., WRDT
(560) @ 12:00 p.m. and on XM Satellite Radio Dial 170 @ 1 p.m.
