A MESSAGE FROM CAMP QUALITY
Dear Parents,
The Camp Quality Puppets have been invited to perform at
th
Stradbroke on: Wednesday 19 November.
1.45pm: R-2 classes
2.20pm: Year 3-7 classes.
We are an educational program, using puppets to deliver a fun
and positive message about supporting children living with
cancer and other serious illnesses.
The program is free; there is no charge to the children.
The information shared aims to help children heighten their
awareness of the need to care for and support others who may
look, or be a little “different”, particularly because of physical
problems, such as hair loss, because of cancer treatment.
In each class all of the children drew a self-portrait and these
will be assembled as a whole school banner to mark this
special occasion.
During the week every class participated in
the Cultural Infusion performance ‘Cool
Capoeira’. On Thursday morning during
‘Multicultural Idol’ children presented
wonderful cultural items in songs, poems and
plays.
In culmination of the week’s celebrations a whole school
Multicultural assembly and parade was held on the Friday in
Rehn Hall.
Thank you to everyone who was able to support and
participate in this community event.
Congratulations to the
wonderful Year 7 UNICEF
Ambassadors for their vital
contribution and leadership
in the Multicultural Idol
and assembly.
Please feel free to join us at the performance if you’re able to.
If you’d like more information about the program, please do
not hesitate to call the school or Shannon Mackowski, Primary
School Program Coordinator on 8410 5555 or 0431 042 438.
FLEXI MOSAIC TABLE
The mosaic table top has been completed by the Flexi artists
and Carol Hill, mosaic artist, and it looks great. Thank you Carly
and the Flexi teachers for this wonderful project. Bench seats
will be installed later this term.

RESOURCE CENTRE
Premier’s Reading Challenge
Congratulations to all students who completed the Premier’s
Reading Challenge earlier this year. The awards have now
arrived at school and will be distributed via classroom teachers
shortly. We had approximately 620 students participate and
would like to thank families and staff for supporting students
during the Challenge.
End of Year
Next week is the last week for student borrowing from the
Resource Centre. With the end of year quickly approaching, it’s
time for students to start searching for their library books so
th
that they can be returned by the end of week 7 (Friday 28
November). Accounts will be sent home for lost or damaged
books after this time. We prefer books are returned so please
search thoroughly. If you have any queries please come and
see a Resource Centre staff member.
Continuing music students: Please come and see Resource
Centre staff to extend your loans for the following year.
Thank you from the Resource Centre Staff.

MULTICULTURAL WEEK
In Week 3 we enjoyed a wonderful time of celebrations to
mark the occasion of Multicultural Week. This was celebrated
with the theme of “Every face has a place”.
Multicultural music was played and enjoyed every day
throughout the school.
On the Pupil Free Day on Monday 10 November staff
participated in a training and development day focused on
analysing student achievement data. In the morning Ray Yeulet
guided us through an in-depth analysis of NAPLAN data from
2011-2014. Following this we explored reading assessment
data (running records and
PAT-R Comprehension) to
determine the progress
made by every child in
the school. The Site
Learning Plan for 2015
will be developed using
the information analysed.

IBPYP EVALUATION
Last week we hosted a three day visit by IBPYP Evaluators. The
evaluation involved visiting classrooms, observing learning,
discussions with staff, students, Governing Council and families
and reviewing policies and documentation of learning. It is an
intensive and rigorous process carried out every five years and
provides us with authority to offer the Primary Years
Programme. Thank you and congratulations to Sue Thalbourne,
our PYP Coordinator, for her leadership and months of
preparation leading into this visit. Preparation for this
evaluation began in 2013 and the evaluators commented on
the high quality of the documentation, the positive learning
and community culture and the collaboration and professional
learning of staff. In addition to this they commented on the
high degree of support and satisfaction parents had with the
programme. We will receive a formal report form the
International Baccalaureate Organisation which will include
commendations and recommendations.
From this we will develop an action plan to enable us to
continue to develop the PYP at Stradbroke.

INSIGHTS
Building parent-school partnerships
WORDS Malcolm Dix
Oh, so serious!
When Malcolm Dix found himself taking life
too quickly and too seriously, he decided to
take a dose of his own medicine.
Everywhere I go I hear from parents that
they are too busy, too stressed, and have too
much to do and not enough time. Many social
observers say parents seeing themselves
as ‘time poor’ is at epidemic levels, a belief
that is only compounded by technology that
enables us to be connected 24/7.
At one point I personally had to take some
time to stop and honestly reflect upon my
own life and that of my family. It didn’t take
long for me to see that I too had become
caught up in the ‘busyness’ of life.
I knew that for the sake of my kids and
my family, I had to make a change but it
requires a day-in day-out conscious level of
commitment – a commitment to practise
joy, fun, patience, forgiveness, silliness, bad
dancing and reflection.
Currently I’m doing seven things to calm
my life down and that of my family while
trying to create more space for my children
to simply enjoy their childhood. (Some of
the following I’m sure you already do but it’s
taken me a while to figure them out).
My strategies to slow down and not
be so busy are as follows:
1 Eat together as a family at the
table at least four nights a week
There has been more and more written about
the importance of families eating together
and the positive effect it has on children and
adults alike. I have to say I’m enjoying it.
2 Avoid watching the nightly news
5 Exercise together
I’ve stopped watching the news and to my
surprise the sky never collapsed as I had
feared. I’m a much happier man not watching
the oh-so-depressing’ news.
I exercise with my kids at least four times a
week, usually at the local park kicking the
footy, throwing a frisbee, running with our
dog and so on. I have realised that the best
way to get them all moving is by moving
myself too.
3 Turn off the TV and sit
around an open fire
I’ve constructed a simple fire pit in our innercity backyard and every second weekend my
partner, the kids and I toast marshmallows,
listen to funny songs, talk and look up at the
stars. Who needs to go camping to enjoy the
outdoors! My eldest boy (13 years old) is also
learning to set a fire and his younger brothers
are learning a lot about flames, hot coals and
what happens to marshmallows when they
are left in the fire for too long. Meanwhile my
16-year-old daughter will stare at the flames
for an hour thinking about who knows what
… but for me this is better than seeing her
staring at social media or watching mindless
television.
4 Dance together
I’ve made the conscious decision to start
dancing in the kitchen with my kids at least
three times a week. I can’t dance to save
myself, however I have three boys and if
they are ever going to learn to dance and
be comfortable with moving their bodies, I
suddenly realized I have to lead the way. This
parenting caper sure can be humiliating at
times, but we wouldn’t have it any other way.
6 Explore nature together
I’ve started spending more time in nature
with my kids by taking them to the river, the
hills, lakes, nature parks. I keep it local, with
the occasional longer drive on weekends.
I contacted my local council and found so
many fun things to do as a family in my local
area that I never knew existed … who would
have thunk it!
7 Limit your own
social networking
I have severely reduced my time spent on
social media such as Facebook, Twitter
etc. My personality type could disappear
into social media and never come back so I
knew I had to significantly change my ways
and, once again, it’s all about positive role
modelling for my kids.
So there you have it, my strategies for
simplifying and calming my family life. As a
result I’m happier, less stressed and far more
‘present’ for everyone which, in turn, is having
a positive effect on my kids.
