Loving Children in Beijing, China—URGENT NEED
Morningstar Family Home— BEIJING CHINA—Feb 16– March1
Morningstar Family Home is a small foster home in Beijing China that takes in
babies from the state run orphanages that have special needs, primarily heart

Life Together
A SIX WEEK SPIRITUAL GROWTH FOCUS ON CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY
Every Christian community will be faced with those in the community who want to lord over others in the group.
The way of Christ, however, is different. Bonhoeffer lays out two preparatory ministries that are to be found in
Christians individually as they enter community:
The Ministry of Holding One’s Tongue – Bonhoeffer argues that “it must be a decisive rule of every Christian fellowship that each individual is prohibited from saying much that occurs to him.” In this way
backbiting and speaking foolishly is held in check.
The Ministry of Meekness – In order to truly love those in the community, we must be willing to humble
ourselves. “He who would serve his brother in the fellowship must sink all the way down to the depths of
humility.”
Bonhoeffer moves from preparatory ministries to the ministries that take place within the community for the community:
The Ministry of Listening – When the Christian is not able to listen but only wants to offer advice and share
his ‘wisdom’ this is “the beginning of the death of the spiritual life, and in the end there is nothing left but
spiritual chatter and clerical condescension arrayed in pious words.”
The Ministry of Helpfulness – Bonhoeffer contends: “Only where hands are not too good for deeds of love
and mercy in everyday helpfulness can the mouth joyfully and convincingly proclaim the message of
God’s love and mercy.”
The Ministry of Bearing – Bonhoeffer highlights the beauty and joy that comes with bearing one another’s
burdens. “As Christ bore and received us as sinners so we in his fellowship may bear and receive sinners
into the fellowship of Jesus Christ through the forgiving of sins.”
The Ministry of Proclaiming – The ministry here is not the formal act of preaching before a congregation,
but of speaking truth to one another in smaller groups, which Bonhoeffer calls “the ultimate and highest
service.”
The Ministry of Authority – This ministry is dependent upon brotherly service. Bonhoeffer says that
“genuine authority realizes that it can exist only in the service of Him who alone has authority…The
Church does not need brilliant personalities but faithful servants of Jesus and the brethren.”
In this chapter, Bonhoeffer challenges the Christian community to truly minister to one another and shows us the
way that this ministering takes place.
We encourage you to read Life Together, pages 90-109, this week.
Each of you should use whatever
gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s
grace in its carious forms.

Talk Together

Can you remember a time when someone helped
you when you really needed it?
How does it feel when someone helps you when
you really need it?

serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its carious forms. 1 Peter 4:10
Meet Together
Discussion Questions for Life Groups
1. Review memory verses. How did it go this week with daily devotions, spiritual meetings?
2. Bonhoeffer uses the word ministry in this chapter differently than
we think of ministry. How is it used in this chapter? What things
are a hindrance to the Christian community that ministers? How
do we encounter this either on campus or in our daily lives?
3. Read James 4:11-12 and Eph. 4:29. The tongue is a two-edged
sword, speaking both words of wickedness and also words of compassion. First, what does Bonhoeffer tell us is dangerous about the
tongue? Then, what does he suggest as a goal for the proper use
of the tongue in a Christian community?
4. Do we risk anything in helping others? Why is it hard to “think
little of ourselves”? (p. 94). Read Col. 3:13, Eph 4:2 and Gal 6:1.
How can UBC serve others with meekness?
5. What kind of listening does Bonhoeffer have in mind for us (p. 97
ff.)? How can Christian love be expressed through listening to
other Christians in our community?
6. What is the two-fold aspect of helpfulness (p. 99)? What are some
concrete ways that UBC has done this and can continue to do this
in the future?
7. Read Gal. 6:2. What role does our freedom as Christians play in
bearing one another’s burdens (p. 100-103)? Luther once wrote in
his famous work on Christian freedom, “A Christian is a perfectly
free lord of all, subject to none. A Christian is a perfectly dutiful
servant of all, subject to all.” (Cf. 1 Cor. 9:19; Rom. 13:8) What
insight does Luther add to the ministry of bearing as discussed by
Bonhoeffer?
8. In a day and age where the phrase “you can’t judge me” (or any
variation on that theme) is common, what does Bonhoeffer tell us
is unavoidable (p. 107)? How do Christians properly judge matters
in life? Cf. Galatians 1:6-10; 1 Timothy 6:3-5; 2 Timothy 1:8-14,
