Cyclones Downed 3-1 by Fighting Illini
Two quick goals against in third period dooms Iowa State
Nov. 14, 2014 – Champaign, Ill. – After a pair of losses on the road to then 12th-ranked Minot State last weekend,
12th-ranked Iowa State came to 14th-ranked Illinois looking to reverse fortunes against ranked teams, but two quick
goals by the Fighting Illini in the third period doomed Iowa State to a 3-1 loss to the Central States Collegiate
Hockey League rival.
After a scoreless first period in which Illinois held a slight advantage in momentum, Iowa State actually got on the
board first at the 6:51 mark of the second period when Jake Bruhn (Chippewa Falls, Wisc. – Hudson
Crusaders/MnJHL) fought through two checks at the point to maintain possession of the puck, fed defenseman
Matt Szpak (Fort McMurray, Alberta – Fort McMurray Oil Barons/AJHL) from the face-off circle, and Szpak
fired a blast from the high slot through traffic for a power play goal and a 1-0 lead. The Fighting Illini didn’t remain
down for long, though, as Illinois freshman forward James McGing took advantage of an Iowa State turnover near
the blue line and skated in on a 2-on-0 with Tadayoshi Shibata and fed Shibata with a cross-slot feed and an easy
goal at the 11:01 mark to even the score 1-1.
Iowa State’s first two shifts in the third period were shifts to forget, but the Cyclones rebounded and kept the score
tied until the 11:16 mark, when Fighting Illini forward Eric Cruickshank deflected a Josh Baker point shot blast for a
power play goal and a 2-1 Illinois lead. Just over two minutes later, Fighting Illini defenseman Will Nunez pounced
on a Cyclone giveaway in the neutral zone, skated the puck deep into the offensive zone, and made a pass to the slot
for Jon Langan to one-time from point-blank range past Iowa State netminder Matt Cooper (Duluth, Minn. –
Duluth East Greyhounds/MnHSHL) to extend Illinois’ lead to 3-1.
The Cyclones pulled Cooper with 1:22 left in the third period, when the Cardinal and Gold took a timeout, but Iowa
State was unable to tally with the extra attacker and fell to Illinois 3-1.
Cooper made 34 saves on 37 shots in the losing effort, which dropped Iowa State’s record to 10-7-2-1.
Iowa State squares off against Illinois again Saturday night at the University of Illinois Ice Arena at 7:30 p.m.

NOTES: Jake Bruhn’s assists on Matt Szpak’s power play goal was his 11th of the season, which ties him for first on
the team in assists. Bruhn is also tied for third in team scoring with 13 points (2-11-13) in 20 games. Mike Dopko
(Makwa, Saskatchewan – Nanaimo Clippers/BCHL) took a shot to the tip of a finger and suffered a fracture and
other injuries to the digit. Dopko will not return to the line-up until second semester. J.P. Kascsak (Springfield, Va.
– North Bay Trappers/NOJHL) was credited on the scoresheet with an assist on Szpak’s goal, but the second
assist on the goal was picked up by Dopko.
