Dear Parishioners,
Can you believe that we have only two weeks left in our church year? Where does the
time fly? Then we begin Advent and start all over again. Our civil celebration of Thanksgiving is so appropriate at this time of year. We have so much to be thankful for and that is
actually why we come to weekly Mass is to say a constant “thank you” to God.
If we could only appreciate all that God has given us. Our lives, families, careers,
hopes, dreams, possessions, educations, opportunities, and futures are all gifts to us. How
about our spiritual gifts we’ve received through Jesus Christ: our salvation, baptisms, Confessions, Holy Communions, Confirmations, Marriages, discipleships, encounters with
God, friendships with the saints, participation in Christ’s life, death and resurrection, membership in the Church, and future life in Heaven are realities that we must live in deep awe
of and appreciation for.
It is also true that we will never fully appreciate everything that we receive through
Him until we are with Him in eternity; but it is everything. God loves us so much, that He
would give us His only Son and Jesus loves us so much that He would, quite literally, die
for us. With a love like His, how can we not respond with our all?
I am personally so thankful for all of you members of St. James Parish! It is a real privilege to be your pastor and I thank God for the opportunity to be here. My first year and a
half have gone by quickly. Thank you for the generosity of your efforts, ministries, participations, and stewardships. I look forward to what we can build here together in our future
and I thank God for all His blessings!
One final thought: this Friday (November 21st) is our St. James/Seton Catholic School’s
th
16 annual SOAR Dinner. How about showing our appreciation for 50 years of Catholic
education by coming and celebrating with us? It will be held at Creighton Prep High
School starting at 6 P.M. and promises to be a great time. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased at the school office or by going to: www.soardinner.com. The evening includes: a
social hour, raffle, silent and live auctions, dinner, entertainment, and dancing.
Proceeds from the SOAR Dinner go to help support St. James/Seton School in assisting
with funding over and above our normal operational budget as well as to help enhance and
sustain the future goals of our school. I thank all those who work so hard to make this special evening so successful. Please consider coming and supporting our hardworking teachers and staff and making our “Quality, Faith-Based Catholic Education” more accessible to
everyone. I hope to see you there!

Baptism Preparations
The celebration of the Sacrament of Baptism is such an
important time for your family. We invite you to an evening of reflection and planning where together, we’ll
prepare for your baby’s baptism.
We gather in the Parish Center at
7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November, 18th.

the military and especially for our parishioners on

Catholic Campaign for Human
Development (CCHD)
Next week's collection for the Catholic
Campaign for Human Development (CCHD)
needs your help. CCHD was founded to end
the cycle of poverty in the United States by
funding organizations that help people help
themselves. With the tradition of improving
education, housing situations, and economic
development, CCHD continues to make a
positive impact in communities nationwide.
Your contribution will defend human dignity and help those living in the margins of
our society. Please prayerfully consider giving to the CCHD Collection next weekend.
Prayer Cards—Three years ago the
Church made changes to our liturgy and responses. Our parish printed prayer cards to
help during the transition. However, most
prayer cards have seen better days. Beginning with the first week of Advent, November 29th and 30th (the anniversary of the
changes), we will retire the prayer cards. Be
sure to locate prayers and responses in the
Missal and the red Order of Mass booklet.

With winter weather, we all need to
remember that appropriate footwear is
necessary to navigate in snowy and sometimes icy conditions. Please plan ahead
and give yourself extra time to navigate
parking areas and sidewalks in a safe
manner.
Also, if you see someone who might
need assistance, lend a helping hand or
arm to make sure we all stay safe this
winter.

The Greek word eucharist means
thanksgiving. At the Last Supper, Jesus
took the bread and wine and gave thanks
to the Father.
In keeping with our Christian tradition, we invite you to bring the bread and
wine that you will share at your Thanksgiving dinner to Thanksgiving Mass on
November 27th at 9:00 a.m. and place it
at the foot of the altar. All bread and wine
will be blessed at the conclusion of Mass.
Later in the day, their use will be a
sign of your desire to grow in family love
and unity by sharing the good things of
life with one another.

this pair be distracted by lovely saloon girls
or by the antics of the villain’s bumbling
henchmen? Perhaps Scoop should interview
town busybodies, Sadie, Prunella and Tilly.
(The Olio) Whether onstage or in the
audience, all will recognize familiar songs
from the 50’s to the present time. Even if you
never heard the McGuire Sisters sing
“Sincerely,” you’ll appreciate the harmony
when done by our very own ladies. A more
recent hit, “American Kids” was made famous by Kenny Chesney. The magic continues!

Battle Ready Rally!
Doug Barry, co-host of EWTN’s “Life on
the Rock” is coming to St. James Church on
Sunday, November 30th at 6:30 p.m. Don’t
miss his presentation, “Battle Ready.”
Doug, “has been spreading and defending
the Catholic faith for over two decades
throughout the U.S. and internationally.” His
presentation is focused on creating a better
awareness of the spiritual battle that we are
all involved in, how we can better prepare for
it and the need to engage in this spiritual fight
with greater fervor and commitment.
By combining scripture, catechism, and
the inspiring words of Popes and Saints, the
audience will be challenged and encouraged
to go forward with hope and strength. This

Angels Among Us
The St. James Christmas Angels project will
offer assistance to those experiencing financial
difficulties. Each year, our parish Community
Concerns Committee invites parishioners to adopt
angels from the Christmas trees in the Narthex —
then shop for Christmas gifts for an individual or
family – either child or adult.
The Parish receives names of those needing
assistance from Catholic Charities and also from
fellow parishioners (after you receive permission
from the family or person in need). We ask that if
you submit the name of someone, to please include a Christmas gift “wish list” for each household member. All gift “wish lists” should include:
man, woman, boy, girl, gift idea, clothing size and
age.

Ø Generations of Faith
This Friday, November 21st, we celebrate the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This memorial is associated with an event recorded not in the New Testament, but in the apocryphal Infancy Narrative of James. According to that writing, Mary's parents, Joachim and Anne were childless. In their latter years, they receive a heavenly message that they would have a child. In thanksgiving for the gift of their daughter, they bring her as a child to the Temple
in Jerusalem to consecrate her to God. Later versions of the story (such as the Gospel of Pseudo-Matthew and
the Gospel of the Nativity of Mary) tell us that Mary was taken to the Temple when she was three years old. According to Tradition, she
stayed there until she was twelve to prepare for her role as the Mother of Jesus.
Our Hispanic brothers and sisters from Mexico have some beautiful traditions for children who are three years of age. They are also
“presented in the temple” often dressed as Mary or a saint. Two friends of mine with three-year olds told me about their little sons walking forward hand in hand to receive their blessing. Some families even rent halls and have food and dancing in honor of third birthdays.
God bless all of our children. May they know that they are precious in the eyes of the Lord, and that He has a special task for them
all. Our Lady, presented in the Temple, pray for us!
