We might want to ask why the parable delivered by
Jesus in today’s Gospel—one of the lengthiest—is not
followed up with an explanation, since so many of the
other parables are. We could be puzzled in part by such
severe punishment for a servant who did no more than
return exactly what he had been given. If he had lost or
gambled or frittered away the money he had been given,
then a severe reaction might be understandable. The
master, after all, had disbursed his funds to the three servants “to each according to his ability” (Matthew 25:15)
at the beginning of the parable. He evidently knew the
third man wasn’t all that capable to begin with. Why,
then, punish him so extremely for displaying personality
traits the master already knew he possessed?
WHAT IS EXPECTED
In Matthew, this is the last parable Jesus will tell his
followers before his passion, death, and resurrection.
Only next week’s allegory of the sheep and goats stands
between this parable and the beginning of the Passion
drama. So the purpose of this parable in the Gospel is no
longer merely to instruct the disciples of Jesus in matters
of proclaiming the gospel, but it is meant to be, simultaneously, a key to understanding the ministry of Jesus,
particularly of his pending death and resurrection into
his Father’s joy. We see in Jesus an example of God’s servant who lived industriously and wisely, to bring back to
his Father a bountiful return. Consequently, the decision
for us is to be like the second servant, who like the first
(Christ, our example), does likewise, though to a lesser
degree; or we may choose to be like the third, who does
absolutely nothing, expends no effort in his master’s service, and is forbidden to share his master’s joy.

Marriage
The Sacrament of Matrimony is a holy covenant between a man
and a woman, entered into freely and solemnly before God. It is
to be witnessed by the community of faith. Engaged couples, at
least one of whom must be a registered, practicing member of
St. Matthew Parish, should set the marriage date with the
Church at least six months in advance. This will allow enough
time to attend the Pre-Cana Instructions, gather all the proper
documents, obtain any dispensations, and plan and prepare for
the liturgical celebration.
The following, after prayerful consideration and preparation,
will soon be united in the Sacrament of Matrimony:
Gregory Meyer & Megan Walls
Caitlin Foley & Jude Fanning

Get Ready
The Letters of Paul to the Thessalonians are among his earliest
writings, and are driven by his belief and the belief of the entire
early Christian community that the return of Christ was imminent. Therefore, to devote time or attention to
anything else was foolish.
As time progressed, this fervor receded a bit.
Today we may wonder, when we hear these
readings about the coming end-times, if we
should take them to heart. What should we do
when we hear that the day of the Lord will
come upon us “like a thief at night”? (1 Thessalonians 5:2) Does this mean we are to stop our long-range goal
setting, get rid of our yearly calendars and planners, or stop
putting money in the college education fund? Of course not.
What it does mean is that we need to change our lives, living
like children of the light and illuminating the world around us
with the light of the gospel. Then, on that day, when the details
of our daily living become unimportant, we will be ready to find
our peace and security in Christ Jesus.

Treasures From Our Tradition
All Christians in both East and West
embraced the care of the sick as essential to church life. In the West, the importance of the visit of the priest is
stressed, while in the East, the sick person is brought to the church for a full
Liturgy of the Word. Some, such as the
Armenians, even call it the “Ritual of the
Lamp,” since the oil is poured out of the lamp by which the Word
is read. This may be why Eastern Christians sometimes anoint
the sick with this oil, since the trip to church might kill them.
Our tradition in the West also unfolded in monasteries, where it
was possible for infirm monks to be attended with a full and
beautifully consoling liturgy. In 950 the monks of St. Alban’s
Abbey in Mainz produced a ceremonial book that was instantly a
pastoral hit everywhere. There were two lengthy rituals for the
sick, one an extended vigil, and the other a liturgy of anointing
that included Communion under both species. While this ritual
was a house formula for monks, it is easy to see how monks
who had the care of parishes desired to serve their parishioners
in a similar way. The first form included the chanting of penitential psalms, and the second form required a confession beforehand. Both forms included a laying on of hands, which everyone understood as being an essential part of penance.

Thanksgiving Day Mass
Thursday - November 27 - 9 AM
From our parish table to your family table. . .
We are planning an, uplifting concelebrated
family Mass on Thanksgiving Day morning with
music of the season, singing and the blessing of
individual loaves of bread for those in
attendance, to take home to their holiday tables.
What better way for Catholic families to
celebrate this happy and spiritually enriching
holiday than to participate in Eucharist together, and give
thanks to almighty God for many blessings. The very word
Eucharist - means thanksgiving, and when you take home a loaf
of bread, blessed at the mass, to your family table - you link
together the two most important tables in your lives and make
them both a place of gratitude, grace, and blessing.
We are celebrating one mass on Thanksgiving Day to bring as
many families and individuals together for one simple, but
joyful celebration.
[N.B. The Mass intentions previous arranged for the 6:30 and
8:30AM Masses on that day, will be offered at 9AM Mass, one
intention by the celebrant and the other by a concelebrant.]

Prayer for Priestly Vocations
Jesus, Good Shepherd, you said: “The harvest indeed is great but
the laborers are few.” We lovingly accept your invitation “Pray
the Heavenly Father to send forth laborers into his harvest.”
Inspire in our Archdiocese a crusade for vocations. Grant us
more priests! May they be the salt of the earth, the light of the
world, the city placed on the mountaintop for the salvation of
mankind redeemed by Your Blood.
Look on us Jesus and our need for priests. Help those you are
calling to hear Your voice and to respond generously to Your
call. Mary, perfect disciple of Jesus, Mother and guardian of
vocations, pray with us, pray for us and pray for all those young
men called by God to be priests in our Archdiocese of
Philadelphia. AMEN
A Catechesis on Family
8th in a series For World Meeting of Families - 2015
A Catechesis on Family Life
Created for Joy
Jesus reveals our identity and destiny
Jesus reveals who God is, including that God loves us and
reaches out to us. But Jesus also reveals what it means to
be human. The Second Vatican Council, speaking of Jesus
as the "Word" of God, taught, "The truth is that only in the
mystery of the incarnate Word does the mystery of man
take on light. In Jesus Christ, we learn things about
ourselves that are true, which we could not invent, and
which we would not otherwise know. As the Bible puts it,
"
your life is hidden with Christ." (Col 3:3, NRSV) Catholics
believe that God so loves the world (Jn 3:16), that rather
than leave us in confusion, God took human flesh to
disclose who God is and who we are. The Second Vatican
Council explains:
The root reason for human dignity lies in mass call to
communion with God. From the very circumstance of his
origin, man is already invited to converse with God. For
man would not exist were he not created by God's love and
constantly preserved by it; and he cannot live fully
according to truth unless he freely acknowledges that love
and devotes himself to his Creator. As Pope Benedict XVI
stressed at the last World Meeting of Families, in Milan in
2012, "It is love that makes the human person the
authentic image of the Blessed Trinity, [the] image of God.
"
The "image of God" phrase comes from Genesis. (Gen
1:2627, 5:1, and 9:6) It suggests that each individual person
is precious, with unique and irreducible dignity. We might
abuse or use other people or ourselves, but we cannot
erase this truth of how God has created us. Our basic
dignity is not contingent on our failures or achievements.
The goodness of God and his love for us is prior to, and far
more basic than, any human sin. The image of God abides
in us, no matter what we do to obscure it. Having been
created in the image of God suggests that our true joy and
fulfillment lie in knowing, loving, and serving one another
as God does.

Live today the way you will wish you had lived
when you stand in judgment before God. - Anonymous

From the Deacon’s Desk
[email protected]
We are treated to some beautiful poetry today in the
wisdom literature that is the Book of Proverbs. In the
verses immediately preceding what we hear today, the
mother to the king speaks to her son about the proper use
of sex, alcohol;, and royal power. She now moves on to the
topic of finding a good wife. In our modern world today it
would be easy to look at this passage and conclude that a
wife is of little value and even less trusted. In reality she
is telling her son to choose a woman who will be honored,
not only by him, but by others as well, and be capable of
assisting him in the duties that royalty requires.
The woman that is being described here is of great value.
She is in fact far more valuable than even the finest
pearls. She is a woman who is multi-faceted, and able to
use her time and resources well and profitably. She is
ready for whatever may come her way, and brings peace,
prosperity, and prominence to her household. We are not
necessarily speaking of earthly riches and prosperity as
much as we are those that come through faith and a
longing to do what is right and just in the eyes of God.
When one finds a husband or wife with gifts like those we
hear in today’s poetic passage, they are truly something
to be cherished. They have a profound impact on their
spouse and children. Their example can last a lifetime,
and even their passing does not diminish who they were,
and how they impacted our life. We can still remember
their words of wisdom to us, and their acts of kindness.
We begin to understand more clearly why they disciplined
us, and how hard it was on them as well as ourselves.
The relationship that we shared with these people, whose
value could never be measured, helps us also to grow in
faith. There continued presence in our lives, even after
death, should help us to understand that the wisdom that
they shared with us during their life, remains with us, and
continues to live on in us who remain. We know that they
are not gone, and are in fact very close. There lessons of
faith continue to draw us into a closer relationship with
our Lord each day. They are the gift that truly keeps on
giving. Their faith in God was their greatest attribute, and
it continues to bring them praise from us, and this praise
is its own “reward” for their labors. These labors continue
to bear fruit in those of us who were blessed with their
presence in our lives then, and continue to be now.
[Fr.] Mike’s Musings:
I have found that I unofficially begin composing these
musings while I am having conversations or when a
thought just “strikes” me. This particular column is the
fruit of both. While we may think of a vocation crisis in
terms of few men who are preparing to be ordained
Deacons or Priests or few men and women who are in
formation for vowed religious life as Sisters or Brothers, I
was “struck” some days ago by the decline in marriages
in the parishes. Please understand that I have seen the
declining numbers of marriages in the parishes in which I
have served for a few years; the concept of a “vocation
crisis” as applied to the Sacrament of Marriage especially
dawned on me rather recently. While a primary reason,
that is not the only reason, for declining numbers of
seminarians is the discouragement which some men face
from their parents upon revealing their desire to enter the
seminary to prepare for priesthood. Perhaps due to the
parents’ wanting a “better life” for their sons, or that the
parents have grandchildren from their son and his wife, or
the unfavorable view of priests since the scandal of clergy
abuse? God, the Source of all that is good, calls each of us
to a vocation; generally, to be holy, and specifically to
serve Him as a single man or woman, a married man or
woman, a vowed Sister or Brother, an ordained deacon or
priest. God uses each of us, responsive to the particular
vocation, to love and serve others, for the growth of the
Kingdom of God. God calls each of us to our particular
vocation because He knows each of us perfectly, and
desires that we respond to His call for the benefit of
others, and for true peace for ourselves.
I wonder why there are fewer marriages in parishes?
While the popularity of couples’ living together increases,
sadly do divorce rates for them increase (60% as
compared to 50% for non-cohabiting couples). Is there real
fear that a life- time commitment is impossible? Is there a
fear that marriage fees in parishes are too expensive? Is
celebrating this particular sacrament of vocation “old
fashioned”? As I am convinced that God has called me to
be a priest, that I love being a priest, and cannot imagine
another particular vocation for me, I know that the
particular vocation to which He calls you is the right fit.
While commitment can be frightening, commitment is not
impossible. Do not be afraid to say “Yes” to God and what
He wills for you.

your sons and daughters
in the family of the Church.
May your grace and love
help our families
in every part of the world
be united to one another
in fidelity to the Gospel.
May the example of the Holy Family,
with the aid of your Holy Spirit,
guide all families, especially
those most troubled, to be
homes of communion and prayer
and to always seek your truth
and live in your love.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen
Jesus, Mary and Joseph pray for us!
