EAA CHAPTER 572 NEWS Nov. 3, 2014 Board Meeting 6:00pm Social 6:30 pm Meeting 7:00 pm At the Fond du Lac Skyport Terminal Flyway Chapter, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin October Meeting Our October meeting started with a reminder that the annual Christmas party will be held in conjunction with the EAA Wright Brothers Banquet on December 12, 2014. More information on this will follow over the next few weeks. November, 2014 October Program — Fond du Lac Aeromodelers Dean Zakos introduced our program for the evening. This months video talked about the Zenith one week wonder. This plane was built from a kit during the one week airshow. Since that time they have been flying off the test hours. The EAA has put together a pdf with guidelines for starting a flying club. If any of you are interested it is available on the EAA web site. The remainder of the video was devoted to STOL aircraft and contesting for shortest take off and spot landing. It almost appeared that the planes were taking off at walking speed—probably they were. All in all, the video was very interesting. EAA Chapter 572 Newsletter Three members of the Fond du Lac Aeromodelers Club came to tell us about their club, their facilities and events. Roy Zingsheim and Armond Pahnke listen while Dave Elsinger starts his presentation Before the meeting started, the three modelers set up two large scale model planes in the lobby. (Continued on Page 2) November, 2014 EAA CHAPTER 572 NEWS Page 2 EAA Chapter 572 Newsletter November, 2014 EAA CHAPTER 572 NEWS The Fond du Lac Aeromodelers are dedicated to promote the building and flying of radio controlled aircraft and to further the national program of the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA). The Fond du Lac Aeromodelers Association (FDLAA) was founded in the early 1990's and continues to grow with a membership of nearly 100, making it one of the larger model clubs in Wisconsin. They welcome anyone who has an interest in model aviation. The club offers flight instruction to teach pilots of all skill levels from basic trainers to aerobatics, to jets and helicopters. Dave Elsinger, the Aeromodelers President tells us about the club Regular club meetings are the second Tuesday of the month (April to November) starting at 6:00PM and usually lasting until 7:30PM Located just outside of Fond du Lac, Wellnitz Field is a 1320' x 280' smooth grass runway suitable for jets, giant scale...you name it. They're consistently told by visiting pilots that it's one of the best, and most enjoyable fields to fly on. The members seem to think so too, but feel free to come take a look sometime and judge for yourself! Dave had everyones attentuion as he described the club facilities and activities. Thre club regularly hosts two annual fly-in events, their "Fondy Fun Fly", a one-day event at which they welcome local or visiting pilots and club members with any size aircraft or helicopter, and "Warbirds and Classics over the Midwest", a showcase and fly-in for giant-scale warbirds, giantscale pre-1960 aircraft, and any size jets with military markings. After their presentation, the Aeromodelers took the model jet outside and fired up the engine. With one fellow standing in front of the plane and holding it back they rev’ed up the engine. It nearly pushed the fellow over with its thrust. The roar was not a whole lot different from a full size jet. Many thanks to the three Aeromodelers for sharing their hobby with us. Page 3 EAA Chapter 572 Newsletter November, 2014 EAA CHAPTER 572 NEWS Have you ever wondered where the models hanging from the Skyport Terminal ceiling came from? They are all hand built by members of the Fond du Lac Aeromodelers Club. The workmanship is beautiful. Page 4 EAA Chapter 572 Newsletter November, 2014 EAA CHAPTER 572 NEWS The above picture comes from Gary Hilbert. Taken at Sioux Lookout with the Northern Lights in the back ground. Despite living in the northern Midwest all my life I have never seen the northern lights. This is truly a beautiful picture. I especially like the way the Big Dipper shows through the lights. This is a very professionally done shot. Many thanks to Gary for thinking to send it on to me. Can you imagine seeing this flying next to you as you look out your cabin window!? http://www.chonday.com/Videos/jegalctospc2 Also From Richard: Truly, a unique aircraft. And you thought filling up a car's gas tank was expensive … http://gelio.livejournal.com/193025.html The following fits well with last months presentation by the FdL Aeromodelers. The World’s Smallest Airport. http://biggeekdad.com/2011/09/worlds-smallest-airport/ It amazed me that the first Air Force One has been allowed to fall into this state of disrepair. Hopefully they will be able to get it back into shape again: http://biggeekdad.com/2014/10/first-air-force-one/ The photo's are fantastic and while you're at it, think of the warriors who flew and flew in these great birds and the folks the bent the metal and shot the rivets, changed spark plugs, fueled, armed, loaded, and brought them safely back to earth from a small GCA shack in some far corner of the world. http://www.dhc-2.com/Monthan_Memories.html EAA 572 Shirts and Jackets: Pete Vercouteren has arranged for us to purchase EAA Chapter 572 shirts and jackets. : The cost of the shirt with the chapter logo is: $28/ M $28/ L $28/ XL $30/ 2 XL The cost of the Jacket with the logo is: S-XL/ $47.95 2 XL/ $49.95 Please contact Pete if you are interested in purchasing. Like most pilots, the thought of losing an engine at night is frightening. Where are you going to land, especially when your options are limited? It's a topic that is often debated in hangar flying sessions. Watch this 3-minute video where Jason Schappert, AOPA's 2014 Outstanding Flight Instructor award winner, answers this question without hesitation. This video is part of our new "In-Flight Emergencies" online program. Click here to watch the video... http://pilotworkshop.com/emergency-sample Generally s[eaking, the folks at Pilot Workshops have a lot of good stuff to share. You might be doing yourself a favor by signing up for their mailings. I always find them to be of interest. Dick Finn’s COZY Mark IV: Sorry guys but nothing to report on the Cozy this month. I’m afraid life just got in the way of the project. The leaves are falling and the windows needed washing. We also bought a stand by generator and I have been working on the installation. I’m promising myself that I will get back to work on the plane this week. The next step is to mount the canopy hinges and do the final fitting. I will also have to rebuild the hinges for the nose access door. No matter what I tried, I could not get them to polish up to the desired chrome like finish I wanted. I’m now assuming the problem has something to do with the aluminum. If any of you have suggestions as to what is wrong, give me a call. The edges shine up nice but the center portion November Meeting Program: Jim O’Connor will be presenting the program at our November meeting. Jim has been an EAA member since 1968, has a commercial airman’s certificate and 60 years building and flying model airplanes, He is a mechanical engineer (Detroit 40 years - automotive/chassis design). Jim will be discussing UAV/UAS’s aka DRONES. He will start with a brief history of UAV’s 1848present and continue to an overview of the current state of technology. This will cover Technology enablers, Aero configurations and applications in the present and future. He will cover their impact on the public, industry and general aviation and finally what congress and the FAA are doing to regulate them Page 7 EAA Chapter 572 Newsletter November, 2014 EAA CHAPTER 572 NEWS Attendance: We’ve been tracking our attendance for about a year now. I thought it might be interesting to include some additional information along with the numbers so I am adding in the titles of the programs for each meeting. I’m hoping that this will help us identify what our members are interested in.
