Giving Back in Support
of Our Students
MHCC staff members know how important
it is to provide a great educational
experience to our students. They also know
just how important it is to provide financial
assistance to those who need help in paying
for their college education.
So when it came to giving back, they did it
BIG time. In fact staff busted the thermometer
keeping tabs of the employee giving
campaign goal and more than doubled
the MHCC Foundation’s original goal of
$10,000 with a combined total annual
giving of more than $21,000.
Most signed up to give automatically out
of their paycheck each month, with their
donations going to the Foundation for
student scholarships.

be
a cyber hero
MHCC Computer Information Systems instructor Paul Morris teaches Cyber Security students how to set up a firewall. By 2020,
nearly all intermediate level computer technical, developmental or implementation careers will require some security training.
Hacking the Hackers
MHCC is One of the Few
Community Colleges Offering
a Cyber Security Program
Everything we do in our daily lives, our national
security and economic vitality depends on a
safe, resilient cyberspace.
But as cyber intrusions and attacks continue to
increase, MHCC is doing what it can to stop
the hackers.
2
mhcc.edu
The college’s CyberSecurity and Networking
program is producing skilled cybersecurity
professionals who are learning to keep those
hackers at bay.
Students not only learn how systems operate,
but are conducting their own “white hat” attacks
or ethical hacking on a system to reveal its
vulnerabilities.

Among the fastest growing jobs in the country are
those involving science, technology, engineering
and mathematics.
That’s why Mt. Hood Community College is taking the
lead in building a workforce to keep up with the demand
in the STEM sector, working alongside such partners as
the Gresham Area Chamber of Commerce, Multnomah
County, East County school districts, area businesses and
community organizations.
The East Metro STEAM Partnership is even taking it a
step further adding industrial and technical arts into the
initiative. The goal is to provide everyone an opportunity
to engage in STEAM learning that results in a skilled
workforce and increased economic opportunity.

“My whole life I have enjoyed learning how
things work and how to solve problems with
machines of all types,” shares Carpenter. This is
what initially led me to the Ford ASSET program.
While I enjoyed working with my hands, I wanted
to do more troubleshooting and problem solving.”
So Carpenter returned to MHCC and majored
in engineering. He later transferred to PSU
and graduated with a degree in Mechanical
Engineering.
His engineering degree accomplished, he applied
for a job with NACCO Materials Handling
Group, Inc. (NMHG) where he currently works.

Successful Career
for MHCC Alum
Deciding on a career can be a very exciting and
trying experience. What do you want to do the
rest of your life is not a question that is simply
answered. But for Mt. Hood Community College
(MHCC) alum Jeffrey Carpenter, his indecision
led to the perfect job.
Carpenter first started at MHCC with the idea
of becoming an automotive technician. He
graduated from the Ford Asset program, but
during this time realized he wanted to do more.

“Going in to the interview I expected to share
my engineering experience and ignore my
automotive background. Instead, I was primarily
asked about my automotive background and was
essentially hired on the spot,” said Carpenter.
It was his combination of skills that NMHG
wanted. “A mechanical engineer who can also
troubleshoot and repair mechanical systems is in
high demand,” said Carpenter.
Carpenter says starting at Mt. Hood Community
College really provided him the opportunity to
accomplish what he did.
“I always recommend new students start at a
community college level. Many students, like
myself, decide that their initial career choice isn’t
for them. It is much easier and less expensive
to do a 180 and try something different at the
community college level,” shares Carpenter.
Carpenter is now a Test Engineer at NMHG’s
development/testing center in Fairview, Oregon.
NMHG provides the strategic leadership and
global support behind Hyster® and Yale® lift
trucks, two of the most successful lift truck brands
in the industry.

Investing in the Future of Our Students, Yoshida Family
Express Their Support with $1-million Gift
Residents of Troutdale, Oregon, Junki and Linda Yoshida have played a significant role in supporting students
through the Mt. Hood Community College District Foundation for many years.
Junki Yoshida tells a heartfelt story of how
community college made a difference in his
life. At the age of 19 he came to the U.S. from
Japan. With little money and no legal status, he
knew going to college would make a difference.
So he traded Karate lessons at Highline
Community College in Washington State for
college tuition.
Soon after, he met his future bride Linda.
The story is one of downfalls and successes,
but with a great ending. The Yoshidas own a
conglomerate of companies including
the internationally known Yoshida Sauce.
Junki and Linda believe that without their
community college experience they would not
have seen the success they live today.
life,” said Junki Yoshida. “I know that we must
continue to do what we can to provide other
people the same opportunity that the community
college provided me.”
And while for many years they have supported
community colleges, they decided to do
something really significant by dedicating
$1-million to the MHCC Foundation.
“This gift is truly a blessing from the Yoshida
family,” said Dr. Debbie Derr, MHCC president.
“They know the importance this institution plays
in the economic vitality of our community. This
gift shows that they see the college as a great
investment in the future of our educational efforts
and especially in the success of our students.”

Barney the St. Bernard is Back!
It was in 1966 that the college
chose the St. Bernard as its
mascot. That’s when a real
St. Bernard made its debut
on campus and was promptly
named Barney.

Now, 48-years later Barney
is back. While not the original
mascot from 1966, this St.
Bernard is two years old and
owned by Gresham couple
Michael and Lori Fryar. The
Fryars are allowing the college
to use their St. Bernard as a
real live mascot.
Barney has already made
appearances at several
events including the Teddy
Bear Parade in downtown
Gresham and during New
Student Welcome Day at
MHCC’s Gresham campus.
So keep an eye out for Barney
at local events as well as on
the MHCC campus.
