Superintendent Update
By: Kimberly K. Belcastro, Ed.D.
H
ello Everyone! It has been a very exciting fall
for the Wrenshall Wrens. The football, volleyball,
and cross country
teams have all
seen great success.
The football and
volleyball teams
have been very
competitive and
several of the cross
country runners
have achieved
personal records
this season. The
excitement has been
evident at school
and at the athletic
events. The student athletes appreciate the support from
the Wrenshall Community.
Thank you to the Wrenshall community, staff and
parents for taking the time to fill out the consolidation
survey. There were 87 surveys returned. Of the 87,
36 surveys supported full consolidation, 30 were not
in favor of consolidation, and 21 indicated that they
were undecided or that they needed more information.
In addition, 52 respondents indicated an interest in
cooperative agreements (pairing and sharing) between
the two districts. 8 surveys returned were not in favor of
cooperative agreements because those respondents felt
such agreements were only a “band aid” approach instead
of a solution. At least 15 respondents support the idea of
an official vote being needed to make the final decision
on the consolidation issue. A range of personal opinions
were offered regarding cooperation and/or consolidation,
and some common themes can be summarized. Those
in favor of consolidation added supporting comments
including:
• Consolidation could realize cost savings in the
departments or positions of transportation,
school nurse, athletic director, Early Childhood
Family Education program, food service, and
administration.
• Consolidation could allow for the best education
possible for all students and the potential for more
academic offerings.
• Consolidation is “common sense” and “long
overdue” were common phrases.
• Consolidation could provide more opportunities for
extra- and co-curricular activities as well as make
teams more competitive with area schools.
• There were residents that stated they would bring
their children back to the district if consolidation
occurs.
• Some of the surveys indicated consolidation would
solve the problem of open enrollment.
• Consolidation would afford the ability to access state
level funds.
Comments received regarding cooperative agreements
between the two school districts included:
• Both districts will need to have equal authority for
decision making.
• There needs to be equity with financial concerns for
both districts.
• Cooperative agreements should not be able to be
used for leveraging one district over the other.
• Some respondents indicated that cooperative
agreements will only partially solve the extra- and
co-curricular activity problems.
Consistent themes from respondents not in favor of
consolidation at this time included:
• Several respondents indicated that more research is
needed.
• Several respondents shared concerns that the
process is moving too fast.
• Several respondents indicated concerns about the
tax impact if consolidation takes place.
• Concerns about affordability for our community that
already has a high free and reduced lunch student
population.
• Concerns about the loss of the “family atmosphere”
that the Wrenshall School provides.
Several respondents framed their responses by asking
questions such as:
• Why is the process moving so quickly?
• How much will my taxes increase?
• Why is consolidation a good idea?
• Will class sizes increase or decrease with
consolidation?
• Will there be adequate research and communication
so that the communities fully understand what is
taking place?
• Will one district have more “power” or rights than
the other?
• How long will my child be on the school bus?
In a scenario where consolidation were to occur,
opinions were offered regarding the facilities of each
district including:
• Most of the suggested building configurations
dropped down to two buildings or less.
• Adding on to Wrenshall for one PK-12 facility.
• New “Super School” for one PK-12.
• No new buildings, please.
• Create one central location for Community
Education and Early Childhood programming.
• Concerns about the Carlton High School location
being too close to the county jail.
Again, thank you to everyone who participated in the
survey. The information is valuable and will be used by
the school board as decisions are made for the district.
There was a joint school board meeting on Monday,
October 20, 2014 for the Carlton and Wrenshall School
Districts. Mike Hoheisel, school finance consultant, from
Robert W. Baird and Company explained the importance
of having Consolidation Assistance Services and what
that involves. Board members from both Carlton and
Wrenshall were given the opportunity to express their
opinions regarding more collaboration or consolidation
at the board meeting. Mr. Hoheisel also explained the
timelines that should be considered when preparing for
a possible consolidation between the two districts. The
October 27th regular board meeting at Wrenshall will
determine the next step in the process.
As usual, feel free to contact me with any ideas,
questions, or concerns regarding the school district. I can
be reached at 384-4274, extension 1948 or kbelcastro@

reetings from the Guidance Office! As I write
this, week 6 is under wraps, and I simply want to point
out how truly proud I am of
the ENTIRE school in their
creation of such a positive
atmosphere. Major concerns
remain at a minimum and
students appear to be on
top of their duty of being
students, which I truly
believe attributes to such
positives. Things are ever
changing here at Wrenshall,
and it’s reassuring to witness
first hand “buy-in” from students, parents/guardians, and
staff in the idea that we are generating progress towards
making Wrenshall a top-notch school.
As we move into November and take a glance into
the assessment world, there are two important tests
taking place this month that I would like to bring to your
attention. The administration of the EXPLORE in grade
8 and the PLAN in grade 10 is part of the new Career and
College Assessments (CCA) required by state legislation
that was passed in 2013 in order for students to meet
graduation assessment requirements. All Minnesota
public school students will take these assessments in
addition to Standards-Based Accountability Assessments
(MCA’s). Specifically at Wrenshall, the EXPLORE will
be administered on November 11th and the PLAN will
be administered on November 18th. These assessments
will provide a way for us as educators to shape students’
academic and career plans as early as possible. Further
information will be provided closer to those dates.
Along with the changes mentioned above, the school
website has also been revamped with a new up-to-date
look! However, we are currently in the process of updating
pertinent material in all areas, especially in the Counseling
and Career section. I strongly encourage you to utilize the
vast amount of information that has been provided in this
section, but please understand that some information may
currently be out of date due to this new layout. Continuous
changes will be made on my end as time permits.
That is all for now from Mr. Holter! As always, please feel
free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may
have regarding your child at (218) 384-4274 ext. 1110 or
[email protected].

W
e have survived the first couple months of
school. The Wrenshall varsity teams have experienced
success. The teachers and
student body have found
their place as we move from
fall season into flu season.
Please remember to get your
flu shots! If not for yourself,
do it for those you love. Even
if you do not get sick from the
flu, you may be a carrier and
transmit the virus to those
in your household. Most
insurance policies will cover
the cost of a flu shot or there
are many free flu shot clinics in our area. Get a flu shot!
I want to take this opportunity to remind you why I’m
in the school. If your student or anyone in your family is
experiencing emotional hardship there is help available.
Mental health is important and can’t be ignored no matter
how hard we try. Being born and raised in a small, tight knit
community just like Wrenshall I know that there is a potential
stigma that goes with mental health and the services involved.
This misperception of reality makes us much weaker and
more vulnerable than the false weakness people view us as
having when we seek help. Suppress mental health issues
rather than address them and they will come out, and often
in very negative ways, no matter how hard we try to hide
them. Addressing emotional concerns and mental health
symptoms in a safe environment and in a healthy way is far
more beneficial than sweeping them under the rug until they
turn into something we can no longer ignore. We are not
being “tough” by ignoring mental health issues just as we are
not “weak” if we confront and address them. If anybody in
your family could benefit from mental health services I’d be
happy to help you seek and secure the support needed. Please
contact me at 428-2313, [email protected],
or [email protected]. Take care. Be safe. Be
healthy.

Dear Parents/Guardians of Wrenshall Elementary Students:
The Wrenshall School District is dedicated to providing all students with an excellent education so that each child can
succeed in school and in life. To ensure your child’s success, we have set high standards that are reflected in what is
taught in our classrooms. In the coming school year we will look at multiple assessment measures that indicate how our
school is succeeding. This will ensure that we reach our goal of all children succeeding in school and in life.
This year Wrenshall Elementary School has been designated as a Continuous Improvement School. This is the result of
the school being among the 25 percent of Title I schools with the lowest performance on the state’s Multiple Measure
Rating (MMR), which measures school performance on student proficiency, academic growth, achievement gap reduction
and, for high schools, graduation rates.
Continuous Improvement Schools must use student performance data to undergo a needs assessment. A needs assessment
is a systematic process whereby we analyze school data in order to make decisions on how to improve the school. We will
undertake that process in the coming weeks and months, and will use the results of the needs assessment to create a school
improvement plan aimed at helping all students reach their full potential. In order to accomplish this important work, we
will put together an improvement team which includes a variety of stakeholders, including parents. You are highly
encouraged to be a member of the improvement team; if you are interested call me at 384-4274, extension 1948.
Families and communities will be at the center of our school improvement plan. Your engagement and support in your
child’s education is critical to his or her success. Contact your child’s teacher with how you can best support the work that
they are doing in the classroom. All staff email addresses and the school phone numbers are posted on the school’s
website. The Wrenshall Elementary School will also be offering several activities for you to be engaged in your child’s
education. Some of these activities will consist of: parent-teacher conferences, preparing your child for testing,
understanding testing results, reading and math strategies that can be used at home, transition planning for entering each
grade level and others to be determined.
We know that not all parents can come to every event but you can still be engaged and support your child’s education
through steps like providing a quiet place for your child to do homework or to read, limiting screen time, and talking to
your student about school. Also, remember that students between 5-12 years old need 10-12 hours of sleep each night;
adolescents need 10 hours of sleep.
We are looking forward to a great year. Wrenshall School will have its annual meeting to inform parents about our Title I
program and revise the parent involvement plan. This meeting will be scheduled this school year and you will be notified
if your child is in the Title I program. You can also be involved by volunteering at the school and/or participating in
committee work. If you have any questions do not hesitate to contact me at school. I can be reached at 384-4274, ext.
1948.

elementary playground supervision
from 8:00 to 8:15 every school day. No
students will be allowed on the playground
equipment on mornings when the equipment is slippery or covered
with frost.
Favorite Subject: Math
Hobbies: Ryder enjoys football,
basketball, fishing, and camping.
Ryder is proud of working hard and having
good manners.
Academic Star of the Month: Lillian
Vanderpoel
F
ourth grader Lily
Vanderpoel is the daughter of
Desiree Vanderpoel and James Olson. She
was nominated by Mrs. Hall who said,
“I nominated Lily because she is a hard
worker every day! She always tries her best
and it shows in her daily work. Her work
is always done very neatly, also. When she
is finished with her work she is willing to
help her classmates if they need it.”
Hobbies and other favorites: Lily enjoys
singing, softball, football, and “having as
much fun as I can.” Her favorite color is
purple, she loves animals, and her favorite
food is cottage cheese.
Lily is proud of the effort she puts into
her work.
A Letter from Coach Rowland:
Dear Team,
Twelve weeks ago we met for our first day of practice. It was stifling hot outside, and
everyone was very quiet and reserved. We did the necessary paperwork, stretched, and
completed a short run before calling it a day. Do you remember how difficult that short run
seemed? Since that day, you have become strong runners, completed countless practices,
competed in ten meets, and grown into a lively, supportive team.
I am proud of all of you for so many reasons, but this season there was one thing in
particular that made me realize how fortunate I really am as a coach. Along with being
wonderful athletes, you are all also very wonderful people. You cheer on other teams when you
feel that they need it, you are always respectful and considerate of those around you, and you
show extra support to the youngest runners on our team to make them feel comfortable and
welcome. I want you to know that you are all exemplary student athletes.
As our 2014 cross country season came to a close, I asked you to complete a homework
assignment for me. You were each required to write down your three favorite practices and
one memorable meet moment. I wasn’t surprised that our strenuous hill workouts didn’t
make the cut, but I was happy to see that our long runs to Carlton and back did! Geocaching
with Mrs. Cass, running to the
swinging bridge in the park, and
our game days were all common
favorites. As for memorable
meet moments, you each chose
something unique. Being
supported by Carlton runners,
jumping into Lake Superior in
Grand Marias, several funny
race mishaps, and finishing the
legendary Swain were just a few
of your selections.
It is sad to think that my days
will no longer include time
with all of you. Thank you for
always making me proud, for
working hard, and for making
our cross country season such a
memorable one.
Sincerely,
Coach
Our playground catches the northwest wind and is cold most fall
and winter school days. Please have your child dress appropriately
for morning arrival and noon recess. In the winter we require that
students in grades K-5 wear hats, mittens or gloves, coats, snow pants,
and boots. We want them to be warm and dry as they enjoy the
outdoors, and as comfortable as possible once they are back indoors.
Please be sure your child is dressed for our northern Minnesota
weather.
Thank you,

Happy Fall!
“So you have a smartphone,
what’s your favorite app?”
T
his month, I will be focusing on
something I get asked quite a bit; and
instead of just
picking one app,
I’m going to
give a top three
along with short
descriptions.
These are
all free and
available both
for Android
and iPhones.
My very
favorite app is the Overdrive Media
Console. This is the public library’s
free book app. You can download both
Ebooks and Audiobooks for free, all you
need is a library card! Warning though,
Audiobooks are pretty large, so you’ll want
to use a WIFI connection to download
them unless you have unlimited data.
Next on my list is a photo editing app
called Snapseed. It’s amazingly easy to
use and has a wide variety of effects you
can use. It is as close as I have found to a
usable version of Photoshop on a phone;
I am truly impressed by its features and
capabilities.
If you have an Android device, you
already have a google account. If you don’t,
you should, because the free online storage
and free email is great. Not only that but
the google suite offers free document
writing, spreadsheets and, most important
for your phone, the google drive app that
allows you access to your files anywhere
you are.

Fire Prevention Week in Third Grade
By: Mrs. vermeersch
D
urInG tHe WeeK of october 6-10,
Wrenshall third graders spent time
learning about fire prevention. Special guests
came to teach us about the equipment fire
fighters wear and use.
Fire fighter and paramedic Chad
vermeersch talked to the students about
the protective gear he needs to battle a
fire. The children were really excited to
try it all on! In all cases, the gear was
way too big, leading to tons of laughs!
However, fire prevention in your own
house is no laughing matter. Students
were taught what to do if a fire started
in their house and were told to talk to
their parents about a fire exit plan. They
learned a lot of useful information and
had some great questions!
Fire fighter and first responder royce
lattu and first responder Joanne lattu
showed the students all the different
equipment that you would find on a
fire truck. The students learned about
how much water the truck held, where
the tools were located, what types of
tools were on the truck, and why they were
needed. The students were also able to see
the inside of the truck and look at the panel
that the fire fighters use to control the water.
The visits were great ways of emphasizing
the importance of fire prevention. A big
thank you from the third graders to our
guests!

Wrens Elementary Basketball
Wrenshall School’s K-6 basketball program is a parent run
program under the name Wrens Elementary Basketball. Volunteer
parents organize and coordinate the program and coach the
students. Grades K-2 is instructional ball and Grades 3-6 join the Arrowhead Youth
Basketball League (AYBL). The AYBL provides the kids with the opportunity to play
games against area schools. The games are held on Saturdays and each grade is
required to host once at their school.
In order for our Wrens program to continue to be successful, we need more parent
volunteers. Parent volunteers are not limited to only parents of student athletes. If
you have an interest in coaching or even assistant coaching, please contact Joanne
Lattu at 218-391-8311. Besides coaches, our program needs many volunteers to run
the scoreboard and concessions and to ref on our hosting dates. It would be great
to have a list of parent names to contact for availability on our hosting dates. If you’d
like to get involved in our program and have your name placed on the volunteer list,
contact Joanne Lattu by phone (218-391-8311), text or email ([email protected]).

2014 Science Fair
The 48th annual school science fair will be held Monday, December 8, 2014 and
Tuesday, December 9, 2014.
Monday, December 8: Exhibits of all projects will be set up during the day in the
Commons and judged that same evening.
Tuesday, December 9: The projects will be available for student viewing during the
school day and again from 3:30-7:30 p.m. for the general public.
A “Grand” Visit

O
ur third grade class had some
special visitors in late September. We
were learning about stories that can be told
over again and again and about how those
stories were usually from grandparents
A $1.00 donation should accompany each entry form in order to offset the cost of the fair.
First prize is $10.00, second is $6.00, and third is $2.00 in K-3, 4-6, 7-9, 10-12, and
research paper divisions. All entries will receive ribbons.
Please turn in your entry form as soon as possible. The deadline for your entry form is

our special guests. The students loved
listening to each of the stories that were
told. They learned about what going to
school was like in the past, and about how
our school has changed over the years. They
were shocked to learn about having no
television and having to listen to the radio for
entertainment. Each grandparent shared a
little about themselves and a little about their
grandchild here in our class.
What a wonderful
opportunity it was for the
students to share in each of
these stories. Thank you from
Mrs. Vermeersch’s class to our
grandparents for taking time
out of your schedules to share
with us!

December Deadline: November 15
Tape four quarters or a dollar bill here for each student.
Can you believe it’s that time again! Science fair time is drawing near. The science fair will be held early again this year, so
please mark your calendars for Monday, December 8th and Tuesday, December 9th.
The science fair is open to grades K-12 and we hope to see some interesting and exciting
projects, papers, demonstrations and models. If you are interested in participating, please turn in your entry form as soon as possible. Entry forms will be passed out in early
November. In addition, an entry form can be found above. If another form is needed, please feel free to obtain a copy from Mrs. Tracy.
Students who are entering the science fair will need to have their projects completed and ready for set up on Monday, December 8, 2014. Judging of the projects will be
completed the evening of the 8th. The judged projects will be available for viewing December 9th from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm for students and from 3:30 pm to 7:30 pm for
the general public.
The deadline for your completed entry form is Monday, December 1, 2014. The entry fee is $1.00/student to help with costs for ribbons and prizes. Projects are due
Monday, December 8, 2014 and judging will begin that afternoon and evening. First, second and third prizes will be awarded in K-3, 4-6, 7-9, 10-12 and research paper
divisions. All entries will receive ribbons.
TIPS FOR ENTRANTS: The main purpose of creating a science fair project is to explore an area of interest in science and to communicate to others what you have learned. This
can be a very rewarding experience, not only because of the new knowledge and problem solving skills that are learned, but also because of the opportunities to advance to
regional, state and international competitions where students can win substantial monetary awards, trips to national science labs and even four-year, expense-paid college
scholarships. When conducting a science fair project, you should first pick a research topic that is of personal interest such as a hobby or an area of science that you might
find enjoyable to explore. There are many different categories of topics from which to choose. There are some useful links on the science fair website to help you find a topic
you will find interesting. The Library Media Center is a great resource for gathering information. Once your broad topic has been established, narrow it by asking very specific
questions. Next, conduct experiments using available time and resources to find answers to those questions. Remember to start your projects early! You can visit the Science
Fair website on the Wrenshall home page and find links and other helpful information for ideas on topics and how to put your science fair board together. Successful projects
are those where the student experimented, collected and analyzed data instead of just reciting information from a book, magazine or Internet site. Successful projects follow
the basic steps of the scientific method: purpose, procedure, hypothesis, materials, data and conclusion. Information should be displayed neatly on a project board. It is also
important to remember that the project is to be your work. Parents and teachers can help plan, guide and make suggestions, but may not do the project for you.
If you have any questions about the fair, where to get ideas, where to find supplies or just general questions, please do not hesitate to call Mrs. Tracy at 384-4272 x1301.
Happy Experimenting!

Wrenshall Early Childhood
A Parent Aware 4 Star Rated Program
Early Childhood Family Education • Hatchlings • Little Wrens
Anna Baciak, Early Childhood Coordinator, 384-4274 Ext. 1412
Mary LaFave, Early Childhood Aide • Jackie Kedrowski, ECFE Parent Educator
Awesome October! October is one of the best months of the school year in preschool because it means the arrival of our favorite
visitors — the Wrenshall Firefighters! During national fire safety week, our local celebrities drop by to teach the children all about what
they do to keep us safe. They did a wonderful job this year emphasizing how firefighters are our friends and that the children do not
have to be afraid of them, even when they are wearing all their strange gear. As usual, the trying on of giant fire jackets and safety
helmets was a big hit with many students. We also had a fantastic time in the classroom creating really neat flame paintings, making
spotted Dalmatian dogs, playing fire truck games, and singing songs about
being a firefighter. The Little Wrens and Hatchlings also took some time to learn
about many other important community
helpers, such as librarians, police officers, and
postal workers.
There sure was a lot
of mail delivered in
the dramatic play
area that week!
Important Dates:
 November 13th — Early Childhood
Screening
 November 20th and 25th —
Conferences for Little Wrens
Our E.C.F.E. class is off to a wonderful start!
We have a great group of parents and families having fun
playing and getting to know one another. There is always room
for more families if you would like to join us on Friday mornings!
Here are some nifty November activities to do as a family!
 Play a wild game of pin the wattle on the turkey! All you have to
do is draw a big turkey to hang on the wall and cut out a wattle
from red paper for each player. Then you blindfold each person,
give them a good spin, and let the laughter ensue!
 Since Thanksgiving means lots of food, have your little one practice
their cooking skills on an easy recipe. Make mini pumpkin pies by
filling miniature graham cracker crusts with a mixture of vanilla
pudding (3 spoonfuls) and canned pumpkin (1 spoonful). Simply
add some whip cream on the top and you have a yummy treat!
Make sure to introduce your kids to the concepts of recipes and
measurements.
 To make a neat turkey picture, use a dish or bottle brush dipped in
paint to create textured feathers. Then, either cut out a body from
construction paper or draw your own.
