The Cougars have won 19 of its last 20 conference games dating back to 2012. Including three non-conference games against GNAC opponents this year, Azusa Pacific is 21-2 in its last 23 games against GNAC opponents. Azusa Pacific has won 23 of its last 26 games overall, extending its best stretch of that duration in program history. The previous best was a 21-4 run which began with the Cougars’ 1998 NAIA championship team. Junior K Jamie Cacciatore was the sixth player in program history (and just the second kicker) to surpass 200 career points, and last week’s three-PAT afternoon at Simon Fraser pushed him ahead of Ben Hansen into fourth place on Azusa Pacific’s career scoring chart to set the program record for career scoring by a kicker (208 points). Senior TB Terrell Watson rushed for 128 yards in last week’s win, giving him 1,815 yards this season and pushing him past the Azusa Pacific and GNAC single-season rushing marks he set last year with his 1,812-yard campaign. Watson had rushed for at least 185 yards in the first eight Cougar victories this year, and he has rushed for at least two touchdowns in seven consecutive games. With two TDs last week, he picked up his 23rd and 24th TDs of the season to break his own school and GNAC single-season records (23). Watson’s game-tying 80-yard TD run (which led to Cacciatore’s game-winning PAT) against Western Oregon was the longest rush of his career, and it pushed him over the 200-yard mark for the fifth time this year (eighth career 200-yard game). However, the Cougars were quickly humbled on a long road trip to Humboldt State, falling behind 30-3 at halftime before ultimately dropping a 30-10 decision to the Lumberjacks. The Cougars rebounded by winning eight straight, including last week’s 21-6 road win over Simon Fraser. Azusa Pacific’s first three games against GNAC foes did not count towards conference standings, but the Cougars’ three consecutive victories by 22 points or more over Humboldt State (55-21), Dixie State (49-27) and South Dakota Mines (52-30) do, along with a 27-20 road win at Central Washington the first weekend of October. The perfect 6-0 GNAC season runs Azusa Pacific’s conference winning streak to 13. With the unbeaten GNAC title, the Cougars have now won 19 of its past 20 conference games, 21 of its last 23 against GNAC foes, and 23 of 26 overall dating back to the middle of the 2012 campaign. SCHEDULE Azusa Pacific’s conference schedule kicked off with a clash between the two teams picked in the preseason by GNAC coaches to finish at the top of the conference. The defending GNAC champion Cougars were a unanimous pick to repeat as champion, while Central Washington was second in the preseason coaches poll. The Cougars posted a 27-20 win, then followed up the challenging opener by hosting a resurgent Humboldt State, which rebounded from an 0-11 season last year to win five straight to start the 2014 campaign, including a 30-10 win over Azusa Pacific in September. After avenging the early-season defeat with a 55-21 thumping of Humboldt State at home on Oct. 9, Azusa Pacific posted big wins over Dixie State, 49-27, and South Dakota Mines, 52-30, before needing a late 80-yard Terrell Watson TD run and a blocked field goal to clinch at least a share of the Cougars’ second consecutive GNAC title in a 19-18 win over Western Oregon. Last week’s impressive defensive performance, limiting Simon Fraser to 285 yards total offense in a 21-6 win, capped the perfect GNAC slate. five touchdowns on the ground. In the 32-24 victory over Simon Fraser, his first win as a starter, Jeffries completed 14-of-23 passes for 163 yards and two touchdowns while running 12 times for 96 yards and another score, and he completed 75 percent (18-of-24) for 224 yards in last week’s win at Simon Fraser. Fellow redshirt frosh Andrew Elffers has also appeared in all 10 games, running for a 17-yard touchdown on his first career carry in the season-opening win over Grand Valley State. Three of his 10 carries have been touchdowns, and he has 82 rushing yards. Receivers: Junior wideout Tanner Henry is the team’s leading receiver with 32 catches for 443 yards and six touchdowns through 10 games. Azusa Pacific has eight different receivers who have recorded at least five receptions this year. Sophomore Ethan Zeidler’s 62-yard reception against Dixie State is the team's longest passing play of the season, and Zeidler has 17 catches for 273 yards since moving into the starting lineup in Week 3. Running Backs: The Cougars’ GNAC-leading rushing attack ranks 14th nationally in Division II, and it is led by college football’s best all-purpose rusher Terrell Watson, whose 6-foot-2, 240pound frame has carried a significant share of the offense with 1,815 rushing yards (181.5 yards per game) and 24 touchdowns on 279 carries. His steady production and eight games with at least 180 rushing yards have been bolstered by contributions from junior Ryan Adams and Jeffries, who have combined for another 645 rushing yards and seven touchdowns. The Cougars are averaging a league-leading 248 rushing yards per game and lead the GNAC in rushing touchdowns with 34. All seven Cougar touchdowns in the Dixie State Homecoming win were rushing scores. Watson ranks second in all divisions of college football in rushing yards and is second in Division II in rushing TDs with 24. Offensive Line: Azusa Pacific’s most experienced position offensively has solidified its reputation as dominant in the run game, paving the way for GNAC bests of 248 rushing yards per game, 5.4 yards per carry, and 34 rushing touchdowns. The front five have allowed just 17 sacks, fewest in the GNAC. Senior right tackle Cody Clay, junior right guard Jaylen Crutchfield, and sophomore center Ahmad Sunda have started every game this year, and senior Jacob Thomas and sophomore Jordan Wernet have started all six GNAC games on the left side. REVIEW BY POSITION: OFFENSE Quarterbacks: Redshirt freshman QB Chad Jeffries emerged as the starter beginning in Week 2, starting every game since the season opener. As the first freshman starting quarterback at Azusa Pacific since 2008, Jeffries has won eight of his nine starts, passing for 1,560 yards and 11 touchdowns so far this year. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound dual-threat QB is also the team’s second-leading rusher CHAD JEFFRIES with 532 yards and REVIEW BY POSITION: DEFENSE Defensive Line: Two of the Cougars’ three returning starters on defense entering the year led a deep position group, which added senior Luke Siwek as a consistent force at nose tackle while junior Oregon transfer David Kafovalu took over a starting assignment at defensive end. The Cougars are holding MATTHEW HACKETT opponents to 108.2 rushing yards per game, and APU ranks second in the GNAC in sacks with 38. Junior defensive end Matthew Hackett , who came up with the game-clinching field-goal block to preserve the win against Western Oregon, also leads the pass rush with a team-high 4.0 sacks. Returning starter Talaiasi Taueli has started six of the 10 games this year, registering 25 tackles, and fellow returning starter Pasiaka Fahina rejoined the starting lineup in Week 3 and has 22 tackles on the year. Linebackers: Senior middle linebacker Steven Fanua has been Azusa Pacific's defensive leader, leading the team with 88 tackles and multiple GNAC Defensive Player of the Week awards. Fanua has started all 10 games, forced one fumble, and registered a team-high 7.0 tackles for loss, including a sack. Sophomore rover Jonathan Thropay has been the only other linebacker to start every game, and he has 51 tackles with three interceptions as a first-year starter. Juniors Greg Ehrhart and Errik Manning split time at the whip until Na’im Colbert started at Central Washington, and Colbert registered a team-high seven tackles (two for loss) with a sack and an interception in the 27-20 road win. Defensive Backs: Senior free safety Tyler Thornton, the 2013 GNAC Defensive Player of the Year, leads a Cougar secondary that features first-year starters in senior Andre Myles at strong safety and senior Ronald Douglas and sophomore C.J. Broussard at cornerback. The Cougars have put together one of the GNAC’s best passing defenses, ranking among the league leaders in yardage allowed per pass attempt (6.6). Thornton has tallied 61 tackles, six pass deflections, two interceptions, and three forced fumbles to help lead the defense, while redshirt freshman safety Taliuaki Suliafu had a loud introduction to his college career with 12 tackles (three for loss) and three QB hurries in the season-opening win over Grand Valley State. He has 29 tackles, 6.0 tackles for loss, and five pass breakups, while Broussard ranks third on the team with 57 tackles and a team-high four interceptions. Douglas, who converted to defense after playing his first three years as a running back, is now a 10-game starter on the defensive side with 34 tackles (21 solo) and a team-high 11 pass breakups. REVIEW BY POSITION: SPECIAL TEAMS Junior Jamie Cacciatore has added full-time punting duties to his roles as the placekicker. Cacciatore has five field goals with a seasonlong of 44 yards, and he is 40-of-44 on PATs. He has put 20 of his 56 kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks, and his 55 points this season have pushed his career total to 208 points, best among Azusa Pacific kickers and fourth on the program’s overall scoring list. Cacciatore is averaging 37.5 yards per punt, with 15 of his 45 punts pinning opponents inside the 20. In the return game, sophomore Tyree Davis has a punt return touchdown of 65 yards, and his TYREE DAVIS 16 kick returns have gone for 416 yards while he has 12 punt returns for 134 yards. 2013 Azusa PaHEAD COACH VICTOR SANTA CRUZ WATCH LIFE ON FILM: VICTOR Head coach Victor Santa Cruz has taken Azusa Pacific football to the next level, and the future couldn't be brighter for a program that enters full NCAA Division II membership in 2014. Santa Cruz guided Azusa Pacific through its NCAA transition by leading the Cougars to the 2013 Great Northwest Athletic Conference championship in the program's second season of NCAA competition. In doing so, Santa Cruz took a Cougar team picked fifth in the GNAC preseason poll to a 9-1 league record before concluding the historic season with a dominant postseason win in the Victory Bowl, 67-0 over Greenville College, to give Azusa Pacific its third 10-win season in program history. For his efforts, Santa Cruz was named the 2013 GNAC and National Christian College Athletic Association Coach of the Year, and the 10-2 campaign pushed the Cougars' record over the past four years to 29-16. The outstanding coaching staff he has assembled includes NFL Hall of Famer Jackie Slater, who was instrumental in the development of former walk-on tight end Luke Marquardt into an NFLcaliber offensive lineman (currently with the San Francisco 49ers). For all his recent success on the field, Santa Cruz is just as proud of the impact he's made on the program by placing his emphasis on the transformation of young men who can achieve success after graduation. His focus on academics has resulted in landing a league-high 21 players from Azusa Pacific on the GNAC All-Academic team over the past two seasons. "I'm a passionate guy," said Santa Cruz. "I'm passionate about Jesus Christ, my family and Azusa Pacific. Through competition on the field and in the classroom, I want to see young men exit this program with an understanding of effective process, a sense of self, and the vision to become successful husbands, fathers, employees and employers." It's a philosophy that has delivered concrete results, as evidenced by Azusa Pacific's recent success both on and off the field. The Cougars used a four-game winning streak at the end of the 2012 season as a springboard into a 10-2 campaign and an outright GNAC championship in 2013. The first two years of Division II competition came on the heels of back-to-back playoff appearances which wrapped up the program's long-standing affiliation as an NAIA independent program, and Santa Cruz was recognized as the NAIA Independent Coach of the Year in 2010 and 2011. The 2011 season, which was Azusa Pacific's final year competing in the NAIA, opened with a narrow 42-40 loss to University of San Diego in a wild shootout that featured 48 combined fourth-quarter points in front of a school-record crowd of 6,124. Despite the season-opening defeat, Santa Cruz guided his team to six straight wins by an average margin of 38 points. The only other regular-season loss was a 38-31 setback at Lindenwood, but a resilient set of Cougars regrouped and closed out the regular season with back-to-back blowout wins over fellow NAIA independents Southern Oregon and Menlo to earn a spot in the 16-team NAIA playoffs. Azusa Pacific piled up 587 yards of total offense in a 49-26 first-round playoff win before traveling to Helena, Montana, for the second consecutive postseason, for a quarterfinal matchup with defending national champion Carroll College. The Cougars scored on the game's opening possession and didn't trail until late in the fourth quarter when Carroll chewed up over eight minutes of the clock with an 18-play scoring drive to edge the Cougars, 1714. Santa Cruz's 2011 offense, led by two-time NAIA Independent Offensive Player of the Year QB John van den Raadt, rushed for a school-record 3,915 yards in 2011 (326.2 yards per game) and also set the program's single-season records for scoring (45.6 points per game) and total offense (496.4 yards per game). Van den Raadt, who started 40 consecutive games for Santa Cruz, ended up shattering the program's career record for total offense, finishing with 9,335 yards which included another program-record of 6,639 yards passing. He was the only QB in scholarship college football (non-NCAA Division III) to average 100 yards rushing per game, and he was the leading rusher for Santa Cruz's offense which led the NAIA in rushing (3,915 yards) and scoring average (45.6), and also ranked as college football's most productive rushing offense by averaging 7.6 yards per rush attempt, making Azusa Pacific the only four-year college football program at any level in 2011 to average over seven yards per rush. That final round of Cougar success in the NAIA was even more rewarding due to the process it took for an independent program to get there. Santa Cruz annually clashed with some of the nation's top programs, putting together schedules comprised primarily of top NCAA Division II, Division I FCS, and NAIA programs. As a result, the Cougars traveled throughout the country to play teams in Florida, Texas, Utah, Wisconsin, Oregon, Louisiana, Missouri, Washington, Montana, and Oklahoma. The wide range of experiences the well-traveled program collected throughout the process helped prepare the Cougars for a successful 2010 season which featured the program's first NAIA playoff appearance since 2005. True to his word, Santa Cruz's players lived up to his challenge to compete in the classroom, as well. In 2009, Azusa Pacific was one of just three football programs in the nation to earn the NAIA's prestigious title of "Scholar Team" for maintaining a team-wide grade point average of better than 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale). Now in his 14th year on the Cougar coaching staff, Santa Cruz came to Azusa Pacific in 2001, serving five seasons as an assistant before taking over as head coach in 2006. During his first three seasons he served as the offensive coordinator, overseeing the development of the program's alltime leading passer (Luke Winslow) and the fourth-best all-time rusher (Ben Buys) at the time they graduated. Santa Cruz played his collegiate ball at the University of Hawai'i, where he was a four-year linebacker for the Warriors, tallying 139 tackles (83 solo) during his career. He redshirted the 1990 season and then played in 46 games over the next four seasons (1991-94). As a 1992 sophomore, he played on the Rainbows' Western Athletic Conference championship team that beat Illinois in the Holiday Bowl. As a collegiate coach, Santa Cruz has been credited for maintaining an atmosphere of Cougar football that impacts players' lives beyond the field. "I've come to realize that no matter what level you're at, you and your players want to win," said Santa Cruz. "Moving up or staying isn't necessarily my goal but making an impression on my players, working hard, and raising my family are." Santa Cruz has developed and directs the Azusa Pacific Football Academic Organization and Success Strategy which works with all transfers and freshmen in their quest for achievement in the classroom. His first team, the 2006 Cougars, was named to the first-ever NAIA Scholar Team. The son of a former U.S. Marines major, Santa Cruz lived in Hawai'i, Arizona, Japan, Orange County and San Diego, where he became a prep standout at Rancho Buena Vista High School in Vista, Calif. He was the Palomar League Defensive Player of the Year while collecting All-CIF honors as a 1989 senior. Prior to his coaching career, Santa Cruz worked in sales and marketing for the Sport Supply Group. Santa Cruz graduated from the University of Hawai'i with a bachelor's degree in economics in 1995, and he completed a master's in organizational leadership from Azusa Pacific in 2010. Santa Cruz, who also teaches in the university's exercise and sport science department, lives in Rancho Cucamonga with his wife Jamie and their three children, Victor, Jr. (13), Izabella (11), and Levi (8). 2013 Azusa Pa- NCAA DIVISION II FOOTBALL RANKINGS Super Region Three (Nov. 10, 2014) Rank 11/3 10/27 School vs Division II Overall 1 1 2 Minnesota State-Mankato 10-0 10-0 2 2 4 Ouachita Baptist 9-0 9-0 3 3 1 Minnesota-Duluth 10-0 10-0 4 4 6 Pittsburg St. 9-1 9-1 5 5 7 Northwest Mo. Sponsored by Learfield Sports, the Directors’ Cup was developed by USA Today and the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics as an annual awards program that recognizes the best overall athletics programs in the NAIA and NCAA. Points are awarded to each school based on their postseason progression through the playoffs in sports for men and women. Since the inception of the Directors’ Cup program at the NAIA level in 1995-96, Azusa Pacific is the only NAIA institution to appear in the top 10 of the standings all 17 years, and the Cougars concluded their NAIA membership with 14 consecutive top-five Directors’ Cup finishes, a total unmatched by any other NAIA athletics program. The Cougars were one of three GNAC teams which claimed conference championships both on the field and in the classroom. Azusa Pacific earned its first ever top-25 Division II ranking by appearing at 22nd in the preseason AFCA Coaches' poll. The Cougars were also ranked 22nd in Lindy’s 2014 national college football preview and 25th in The Sporting News 2014 college football magazine. Senior RB Terrell Watson, the 2013 GNAC Offensive Player of the Year, was named Lindy’s 2014 Preseason Division II Offensive Player of the Year, earning a spot on Lindy’s 2014 All-Division II First Team Offense. Watson rushed for 1812 yards and 23 touchdowns on 301 carries in a record-breaking season in 2013. Terrell Watson: 2014 Harlon Hill Trophy Nominee Azusa Pacific running back Terrell Watson entered the 2014 season as Lindy’s Preseason Division II Offensive Player of the Year, and just a day after the 6-foot-2, 240pound senior broke his own season rushing records to lead his team to its second consecutive GNAC title, he was nominated for Division II’s most prestigious individual postseason award, the Harlon Hill Trophy. Watson was the first college football player in any division to surpass 1,000 rushing yards in 2014, and he maintained the national rushing lead for four consecutive weeks. He trails the current leader by only six yards heading into the final week of the regular season. A five-time GNAC Player of the Week, Watson has 1,815 rushing yards and 24 rushing TDs, breaking single-season school and conference records he set last year when he was named the GNAC Offensive Player of the Year. Watson currently holds 20 school records and 24 GNAC records, including the single -season and career rushing yardage and touchdowns records. He enters the final regular-season game needing less than 200 yards to move into Division II’s all-time top-25 single-season rushing leaders. The Harlon Hill Trophy has been awarded annually since 1986, and previous winners include current NFL players Danny Woodhead and Joique Bell. An advisory committee selects up to six players from each of Division II’s four regions for listing on regional ballots, which are determined to select the top two from each region for the national ballot. The winner will be announced on December 19, and the trophy is officially presented to the winner on January 9 in Florence, Alabama. The Hill Trophy is named for a former University of North Alabama player - the late Harlon Hill – who was a standout with the Lions from 1950-53 before going on to fame in the NFL with the Chicago Bears. 2013 Azusa PaOFFENSE: SPREAD DEFENSE: EAGLE WR 14 80 Tanner Henry Preston van Hofwegen Jr. Jr. 6-3 180 5-11 185 DE 94 61 Jason Schwartz Haden Hobbs R-Fr.
