Crataegus sp. (Hawthorn)
Hawthorn is a herb we are used to seeing all
around us as it is found in most of our hedgerows
across the country. Part of the rose family this herb
contains approx. 300 species which grow not just
across Europe but as far afield as China and the
Middle East. The young leaves, flower buds and
berries are all edible in additional to their medicinal
uses. The species grown in China produce much
larger fruits, often sugared and eaten as sweets.
Crataegusmonogyna and Cratageusleavigata are
the two most common species in Ireland. They can
and do cross breed and are almost identical in
terms of their appearance and medicinal benefits.
Hawthorns belong to the rose family forming
shrubs or small trees, mostly growing to 5–15
metres tall with small pome fruit and (usually)
thorny branches. The flowers are typically in full
bloom during May and the fruits ripen through
September. They should be picked late in the
season (October and November), when they are as
ripe as possible. For medicinal purposes they are
generally picked after the first frost.
As it is so late in the year I thought I would
concentrate on the fruit and their culinary uses. In
Ireland and the UK the fruit is smaller and were
used to make a jelly or home-made wine, the
flavour being comparable to over-ripe apples The
fruits of the species Crataeguspinnatifida (Chinese
hawthorn) are larger and are tart, bright red, and
resemble small crabapple fruits. They are used to
make many kinds of Chinese snacks, including
haw flakes, jams, jellies, juices and other drinks.
In Mexico the fruits (CrataegusMexicana)are
used in a number of ways, from raw to cooked and
preserved as jams during the winter months. They
are also stuffed in the piñatas broken during the
traditional pre-Christmas celebration and cooked
with other fruits to prepare a Christmas punch.
Finally, I thought you might be interested in a
recipe for hawthorn ketchup. Enjoy.
Hawthorn Berry Ketchup
Ingredients
500g hawthorn berries
300ml cider vinegar
300ml water
170g sugar
1/2 tsp salt
Freshly ground black pepper
1. Strip the berries from their stalks then rinse in
cold water.
2. Place in large pan with the vinegar and water,
bring to boil and simmer for about 30 minutes
until the skins start to split.
3. Remove from the heat and rub the mixture
through a sieve or pass through a food mill to
remove the large stones and skin.
4. Return the mixture to a clean pan, add the sugar
and heat gently, stirring frequently, until the
sugar dissolves.
5. Bring to the boil and cook for a further 5 -10
minutes, until the sauce reduces and becomes
slightly syrupy.
6. Season with salt and pepper then pour into
sterilised bottles. Use within 12 months

Rivalry and Vainglory

Pope Invites Faithful to Place the Needs of
Others Before Their Own
By Junno Arocho Esteves
VATICAN CITY, November 03,
When no one seeks his own interests and is genuinely
grateful, then there is harmony in the Church. This was
the main theme of Pope Francis' homily during his
morning Mass at Casa Santa Marta today.
He reflected on the First reading from St. Paul’s letter
to the Philippians, in which the Apostle says to “do
nothing out of selfishness or out of vainglory; rather,

Hope ...
“Be ready to give a reason for the hope that is within

A teacher put three words on the Board: Faith, Hope

considered to be the most important. Faith came in last;
charity, surprisingly, in second place and hope won by
a landslide. The teenagers recognised their greatest
need was the need for hope.
We all need hope, a most precious spiritual gift. There

“There's No Room in the Church for a
Worldly Mentality !" 21 Nov 5, 2014
Pope Francis describes the role of Bishop as He noted “how beautiful” it is "when the bishops,
a service and not a place of honour ...
with the Pope, express this collegiality!"
During his weekly General Audience, Pope Francis
entrusted himself and all bishops to the prayers of the
faithful. Through their prayers, he said, "we can at
least hope to be closer to the acts of service that the
Apostle Paul advises for all bishops."
Encouraging the thousands gathered, he asked, “Do
you agree? Will you pray for us?”
The Holy Father said that bishops must have many
virtues, despite being "sinners."
Through the Holy Spirit’s power and grace, he
continued, “Christ does not fail to give rise to the
ordained ministries, in order to build up the Christian
community as His body.”
The Pope said the role of the bishop, among these
ministries, “stands out.”
“In the bishop, assisted by priests and deacons,” he
said, “it is Christ Himself who is present and who
continues to take care of his Church, ensuring his
protection and guidance.”
Through their presence and ministry, he declared, we
can recognize the “true face” of the Church.
“She is our Holy Mother, the Hierarchical Church,”
he said. “And really, through these brothers chosen
by the Lord and consecrated by the sacrament of
Holy Orders, the Church exercises her motherhood."
“There should not be room in the Church for a
worldly mentality,” he continued. “A worldly
mentality speaks of a man who has an ‘ecclesiastical
career and has become a bishop.’"
The Pontiff went on to say that that the role of a
bishop is not a place of honour but rather a service to
others, following the example of the Good
Shepherd.
It is sad, he said, when we see a man “who seeks this
office and does all he can to get it and when he gets it
does not serve, instead goes around like a peacock
and lives only for his vanity.”
Recalling the recent Synod of Bishops, the Pope
noted that while the bishops came from different
cultures and places, the meeting exemplified that
bishops are "a single college."
More than just Christian communities recognizing
the bishop as a “great gift,” he stressed they are
called to nurture a sincere and profound
communion with him, starting with the priests and
deacons.
"There is no healthy Church if the faithful priests,
deacons are not united around their bishop," he
underscored. “This Church not united around their
bishop is a sick Church.”
Concluding his address, Pope Francis said that the
"relationship of each Church with the Apostles is
visible and with all the other communities, united
with their bishops and the Pope in the One Church
of the Lord Jesus, that is our Holy Mother, the
Hierarchical Church.”
Shroud of Turin
Pope Francis plans to visit Turin, Italy, in June
2015. The Holy Father made the announcement
while greeting the Italian pilgrims during his
Wednesday General Audience today.
“I am pleased to announce that, God willing, on
June 21st I will go on a pilgrimage to Turin to
venerate the Holy Shroud and honor Saint John
Bosco, on the bicentennial anniversary of his
birth,” the Pope said.
Archbishop Cesare Nosiglia of Turin as well as the
mayor of Turin, Piero Fassino, were present in St.
Peter’s Square. They will be holding a press
conference on next year’s exposition of the Shroud
of Turin and the 200th anniversary of St. John
Bosco’s birth. While the authenticity of the Shroud
has neither been confirmed nor denied by the
Vatican, devotion to the image was approved by
Pope Pius XII in 1958. Pope Francis sent a video
message last year on the occasion of the Shroud’s
exposition at the Cathedral in Turin, in which he
said that “the Man of the Shroud invites us to
contemplate Jesus of Nazareth.”
“By means of the Holy Shroud, the unique and
supreme Word of God comes to us: Love made
man, incarnate in our history; the merciful Love of
God who has taken upon himself all the evil of the
world in order to free us from its power,” he said.

some kind of rhythmic murmur from below which
we later discovered was our parents praying the
Rosary. My mother appeared one night, with the
beads still in her hand and announced: ‘Kathleen,
Betty and Tom, its time you started to say your
prayers. Pick up those
beads that I brought you from Lourdes and come
down to the kitchen to join your Daddy and
myself!.’

YOUTH 2000
Youth 2000 is a spiritual
initiative of young people who
work in co-operation with the
clergy and others to lead young people into the
infinite mystery of the unique love that God has
for each person.
Through an experience of the Person of Jesus,
present in the Blessed Sacrament, they are
awakened to the individual plan that God has for
each one of them to live as His children.
The charism of Youth 2000 is to draw young
people through the Immaculate Heart of Mary to
a deep and lasting union with the Eucharistic
Heart of Jesus. In short, Youth 2000 is youth
leading youth to the heart of the Church.

Local Meetings
This is suggested by a text of St Paul. The Apostle
speaks of the value of each person's work which
will be revealed on the day of judgment and says:
"If the work which any man has built on the
foundation [which is Christ] survives, he
will receive a reward. If any man's work is
burned up, he will suffer loss, though he
himself will be saved, but only as through
fire" (1 Cor 3: 14-15).
At times, to reach a state of perfect integrity a
person's intercession or mediation is needed.
For example, Moses obtains pardon for the
people with a prayer in which he recalls the
saving work done by God in the past, and prays
for God's fidelity to the oath made to his
ancestors (cf. Ex 32: 30, 11-13).
The figure of the Servant of the Lord, outlined in
the Book of Isaiah, is also portrayed by his role of
intercession and expiation for many; at the end of
his suffering he "will see the light" and "will justify
many", bearing their iniquities (cf. Is 52: 13-53, 12,
especially vv. 53: 11).
Psalm 50 (51) can be considered, according to the
perspective of the Old Testament, as a synthesis of
the process of reintegration: the sinner confesses
and recognizes his guilt (v. 3), asking insistently to
be purified or "cleansed" (vv. 2, 9, 10, 17) so as to
proclaim the divine praise (v. 15).

Today's verse reminds
us that the adventure
of the Gospel can reach right into Dilbert's
cubicle and make even him a hero!
It is commonplace to note that tax collectors
were loathed in ancient Judea.
What is not so commonplace is to note that
they often loathed their own lives: lives
imprisoned in an office sitting and counting
coins.
St. Matthew (formerly the tax collector Levi)
is, in a sense, the patron of all those who have
dismal jobs, who look back on lost childhood
and the dreams of adolescence, who go home
on the subway or bus everyday, spend the
evening nursing a drink and watching the
tube, and who periodically look back on a life
spent in quiet desperation!
To such people, St Matthew holds out a hand
and says,
"I dropped it all to follow Jesus. Come
with me and be free yourself! There's not
a reason in the world you can't!"
Obviously, this doesn't mean parents skip
town and leave the family scrambling to cover
the mortgage!
But it does mean that today—-now—-you can
choose to let God make your life be about Him
and not about money or filing or statistics or
the DAILY GRIND.
Jesus came that we might have life
abundantly. Take Him up on His offer!
JEFF
St Luke 5:27-28
After this he went out, and saw a tax collector,
named Levi, sitting at
the tax office; and he said to him, "Follow
me." And he left everything,
and rose and followed him

BEGINNING EXPERIENCE
B.E. is a support group for those coping with
the pain of loss of their life partner, through
Death, Separation or Divorce. Few people are
able to cope alone with the pain of loss. Do
you find that you need more support than
family and friends can provide? Seeking help
is a sign of strength and self-knowledge – not
weakness.
This is a healing ministry, which helps to
resolve the grief that goes with the end of a
marriage or relationship. Coping effectively
with bereavement is a skill we can all learn. A
team, who are themselves widowed, separated
or divorced share their experiences with you.

Acts of the Apostles:
The Beginning of
the Church
By Steve Ray (Part 4)
With the brilliance and
perception of a prophet Luke
shows us a direct parallel
between the Old Covenant
and the New—the new
Passover and Pentecost.
Again, the Lamb’s blood has been shed, this time
Jesus’ on the cross and a way has been made through
water to leave the bondage of sin and Satan—the way
to eternal life. Again God comes down in fire, this
time not on tablets of stone but on the tablets of their
hearts (2 Cor 3:3) and while the first flame was
fearsome, and far off on the mountaintop, this new fire
coming down from God is very personal, hovering
over each individual head. And because many
believed, God added three thousand that day; at the
new Pentecost, fifty days after the Cross, he gives
back what had been taken at the first Pentecost.
But the nation of Israel as a whole rejected Jesus, and
like the Israelites of old, this generation was destroyed
forty years later when Jerusalem was leveled by the
troops of Titus marching from Rome in AD 70. Forty
years after each of these Pentecosts each generation of
rebellious Jews were destroyed.
No wonder Peter stood up and warned the Jews in
Jerusalem to “Be saved from this perverse
generation!” (Acts 2:40). This was the same term
Moses used of his generation who were destroyed in
the wilderness due to their unbelief (Deut 32:20).
This charge by Peter was not referring to salvation of
their souls, primarily, but a warning that destruction
was coming on this generation of Jews for its unbelief
as it had come on their fathers. The New is a mirror
image of the Old and Luke paints the portrait with
great precision and epic proportions.
But the book has a very unsatisfactory ending—in the
sense that there is no ending. It just stops in midstream.
What happens to Paul?
Where has Peter ended up? I think Luke ended
without an ending because the story is by its nature,
never ending story. The Holy Spirit is still at work in
and through his Church and the Apostolic Succession.
Who would presume to say that the soul of the
Church, the Holy Spirit, and his work stopped at the
end of Acts? Luke is letting us know the Great
Commission’s first chapter had been written, but the
lives of the saints, bishops, martyrs, evangelists,
laymen, the whole Church is on a journey and the
story will not end until Christ returns in the clouds just
as he left—as the story began. Then we will have the
whole story from beginning to ending.

Calling all you Ladies!
Starting today...
the healthy way!
A series on food & health
Be kind to yourself,
It makes the
world of difference!
A young lady sat in front of me
recently and started to tell me how much working with
me has changed her life so positively in such a short
time. Prior to coming to me she had to quit work
because she was so anxious and in her words,
depressed. She had repeated visits to the doctors and
the only help she was offered was anti-depressants.
She decided not to take them, people around her were
very negative and therefore she continued to belief she
was ‘depressed’ as there was little encouragement or
support. That was her lot as she believed until she read
one of my articles and decided to give me a call.
I’m sharing this story with you as I believe from the
bottom of my heart no matter how sick you are or no
matter what you think is wrong with you, someone,
somewhere can help you. She thanked me for listening
to her and showing her the importance of building her
self-worth. She now gets out of bed in the morning
with a true purpose, a purpose to LIVE.
Knowing I have changed even just one life in such an
impactful way makes everything I do so worthwhile as
its so great to share a journey of helping to take
someone out of that dark negative place into a lighter,
brighter happier and much healthier place. I encourage
you to keep looking, keep searching until you get some
answers. Keep growing and exploring within until you
reach a place of inner happiness and contentment. I
love those two sacred words, inner happiness and
contentment because no amount of money or material
things in the world can buy that peace for you. You
must be nurtured and cared for and soothed and healed
when hurt. Self-love and self-care are both so so so
important as the foundation for a truly happy and
healthy you.
Being kinder to myself was the secret I learned to
transform my world. Everything in my life and world
changed when I started to like myself and all I am.
So wherever you are upon your journey, whatever pills
you are taking, whatever drastic things you have done
with your diet or lifestyle ensure you have a good mix
of self-love thrown in there too or else the other
ingredients will have little impact.
I have experienced first hand the detrimental impact
self-blame, self-criticism, self-destruction and so much
more can do to ones health, happiness and well-bring.
Start with caring for yourself, no one else can do that
for you, no one else can rebuild your self-esteem only
you. Others can guide, support, offer device, numerous
steps and so on but you must value who you are and
then share your skills, talents and gifts with the world.
Give thanks for your life and celebrate all you have
and all you are!

Heart
to Hand
The Registered Charity “Heart to Hand” was set
up to care for the poorest of the poor in countries
like Albania, Bosnia, Moldova, Romania and
other countries where the need arises, providing
food, medicine, clothes and other humanitarian
aid; education and training to help these people
fend for themselves has been put in motion. It is
non-denominational, voluntary and therefore
what comes in goes out to help the poorest of the
poor. Without the help and generosity of the Irish
people we could not survive.

The Community Cenacolo
helps people suffering from
addiction to change…
The Community Cenacolo
was founded by an Italian
nun, Mother Elvira Petrozzi,
in 1983. For many years she
had been concerned by the
destruction she had seen
among young people through
drug abuse and she longed to
help them.
To-day there are houses world
wide with over 2,000 young
men and women in the
programme. The house for
men in Ireland was opened in
Knock, Co. Mayo in 1999. As
yet there is not a house for
women in Ireland but women
who wish to enter the
Community are accepted in
Cenacolo houses in Europe.

Kildare Alzheimer
Dementia & Alzheimers
Dementia describes a group of symptoms
including memory loss, confusion, mood
changes and difficulty with day-to-day tasks.
More than 40,000 people in Ireland are
presently living with dementia. There are many
causes of dementia with alzheimers the most
prevalent. It can be difficult to distinguish
between alzheimers and mild forgetfulness
which can be attributed to normal ageing.
Typical early symptoms of Alzheimers include :
1. Regularly forgetting recent events, names
2. Regularly misplacing items.
3. Confusion about time of day.
4. Disorientation, especially away from your
normal surroundings.
5. Problems finding the right words.
6. Mood or behavioural problem, i.e. apathy,
irritability or losing confidence.
7. Restlessness or difficulty with sleeping.
8. Getting lost whilst driving or walking.
Should the above symptoms be a cause of
concern please contact your doctor asap. Early
detection can help greatly.
The Alzheimer’s Cafe meeting is on the last
Wednesday of every month (7-9pm) in the
Convent Tea Rooms at McAuley Place, Naas
(beside the Main Church). The main speaker
will be Amanda Bohan, Home Instead, Senior
Care. The topic : “Confidence to Care”.
All carers and cared for are most welcome.

HARVEST
Two questions that
Protestants often ask:
1. "Why is Church teaching so important?"
In the founding of any nation, the government of that
nation is as important as its founding documents. For
example, let us that over 200 years ago, America's
founding fathers had just finished drafting the
Constitution. They then walked out to a waiting
crowd, handed over the document and said, "Here it
is: the supreme law of our land. Go in peace! Our spirits
will be with you to guide you in interpreting this
correctly." Chaos and anarchy would have reigned, with
everyone trying to interpret the Constitution for
themselves. And if a secular nation needs a judiciary to
interpret its laws, how much more does God’s Kingdom
need the same authority? Scripture itself says, "No
scripture is of any private interpretation" (2 Pet 1:20); and
the Church is called "the pillar and foundation of truth" (1
Tim 3:15). Based solely on what Jesus said, no one would
have known there was going to be a “New Testament”;
but there was to be a Church. Jesus said, “Upon this rock
I will build My Church” (Matt.16:18), not “upon this
page I will write My Book.”
2. "Why have Catholics added to the Bible?"
Catholic Bibles contain seven Old Testament books not
contained in Protestant Bibles: Tobit, Judith, Wisdom,
Baruch, Sirach, and 1 & 2 Maccabees. Many nonCatholics view these books as something invented by the
Catholic Church.
This could not be further from the truth. At the time
of Jesus, the version of the OT used throughout the
civilized world was the Greek translation called the
Septuagint. Most Protestants seem unaware that the
Septuagint contained the seven disputed books.
Furthermore, the New Testament refers to many of
these as it does other OT books: Hebrews 11 refers to
events in Maccabees, and Romans 1 and 2 contain
much from Wisdom. Catholics are “Bible Christians”; we
believe in the inspiration and authority of the Scriptures.
As St. Jerome said, "Ignorance of the Scriptures is
ignorance of Christ". But we remember where the
Bible came from, and we keep it in the context which
God intended! We believe in the Bible as “the Book
of the Church”; and we rejoice in being part of “the
Church of the Book.”

Kildare Alzheimer
Early Diagnosis Essential
Being diagnosed with Alzheimers is usually
traumatic and emotional for both the person and
his/her family. Up to recently most diagnosis were
made when the illness had progressed to stage one.
By that stage most carers would expect their loved
ones to experience memory loss, misplacement of
items, irritation and anger and confusion re time
and place. Driving would therefore be inadvisable
thus resulting in less independence.
What some carers may not have been prepared for
was the inability to remember or express simple
words, wandering, paranoia and delusions. There
can also be loss of appetite and night time
wakefulness. This can be draining not just on the
cared for but even more so on the carer. What a
daunting prospect.
For the future however there is a silver lining. New
trials are focusing on early detection – ie before the
onset of dementia. By detecting and treating mild
cognitive impairment the progression of
Alzheimers will be greatly reduced. This
development will be widely welcomed.
The Alzheimer Cafe meeting takes place on the
last Wednesday of every month from 7pm to
9pm in the Convent tea rooms at McAuley
Place, Naas – beside the Main Church. All carers
and cared for are most welcome.
Grandparents’
Association
The Association has been recognised and
approved by both the Pontifical Council for the
Family and by the Pontifical Council for New
Evangelisation in The Vatican. Pope Francis, on
many occasions, has applauded the role which
Grandparents play in the life of The Church. The
vocation of Grandparents to Pass on The Faith is
now recognised everywhere and Grandparents
find that membership of the Association is a
great support to them in that role because the
Association offers practical as well as spiritual
ways of passing on the Faith..

Horticultural Show
REVIVAL
Approximately 30 years ago Clondalkin used to
host a Horticultural Show for the children and
Adults of the community. It faded out as the
Celtic Tiger struck our lives. It has since
disappeared. The format was that children had
their show in May and Adults were in
September. It drew people from the locality
together and competition was high. Who grew
the biggest and best and what sponge and Jams
tasted the best? And the children’s miniature
garden in a biscuit tin was a great attraction.
WELL! - 2015 will bring the rebirth of the
Horticultural show to Clondalkin, so Guys and
Gals and children get making, baking and
growing. This will bring a new highlight to the
late summer months if we start now this
winter... You could be a winner. 1st 2nd 3rd prizes
in each category. Green thumbs and nimble
fingers get going!

“Gone Shopping”
Dear Grace
If the Church teaches that we should follow
our conscience, but then turns around and
teaches us that we must obey Church teaching,
then what is the difference? Do I follow the
Church’s teaching or my own conscience?
Yes, it is true that the Church teaches that no person
must be forced to act contrary to his/her conscience.
Nor must they be prevented from acting according to
their conscience, especially in religious matters
(Dignitatis Humanae).
The reason that the Church can teach this, however, is
because she knows that “deep within his conscience
man discovers a law which he has not laid upon
himself but which he must obey. Its voice, ever calling
him to love and to do what is good and to avoid evil,
sounds in his heart at the right moment....
For man has in his heart a law inscribed by
God.... His conscience is man's most secret core
and his sanctuary. There he is alone with God
whose voice echoes in his depths" (Catechism
1776).
What the Church is telling us is that when we
truly listen to our conscience, we will hear God
speaking to us.
We do not belong to ourselves. We belong to God;
He made us and we are on a journey back to Him. He
wants for us to be very happy, and, because He made
us, He knows best all that is good for us.
So, He builds inside us this conscience through which
He will try to guide and lead us to do what is good and
right. In this life, we will face many serious, moral
decisions, and we will have choices to make.
These choices cannot be made blindly. In other
words, our conscience must be informed. This means
that we must first take certain steps to learn everything
we can in regard to what we are trying to make a
decision about.
This is called discernment. The Church can say
“follow your conscience” because she knows that if you
truly listen to God in your conscience, then what you
hear will be no different than what the Church teaches,
for she teaches only what God has revealed to her.

IN THE BIBLE!
The Church is the
Pillar & Bulwark
of Truth… (1 Tim 3, 15)
Who has the
AUTHORITY
(2)
Answer: The Pillar of Truth!
Whether or not you are Catholic,
you may have questions about
the Catholic faith. You may have
heard challenges to the Catholic Church’s claim to
be the interpreter and safeguard of Scripture and of
the teachings of Jesus Christ, its founder.
Such challenges may come from door-to-door
missionaries who ask, "Are you saved?", from peer
pressure that urges you to ignore the Church’s
teachings or from a secular culture that whispers or
proclaims loudly "There is no God!"
You can’t deal with these challenges unless you
understand the basics of the Catholic faith.
In the study of Catholicism you will find answers to
life’s most troubling questions:
- Why am I here?
- Who made me?
- What must I believe?
- How must I act?
- How can I be saved?
- Why must I be baptised?
All these can be answered to your satisfaction if
only you will open yourself to God’s grace, turn to
the Church he established, and follow his plan for
you (John 7:17).
Jesus said his Church would be "the light of the
world." He then noted that "a city set on a hill
cannot be hidden" (Matt. 5:14). This means his
Church is a visible organisation and to be so it must
have characteristics that clearly identify it and that
distinguish it from others.
Jesus promised, "On this rock (Peter) I will build
my Church and the gates of hell will not prevail
against it" (Matt. 16:18). This means that his
Church will never be destroyed and will never fall
away from him.
His Church will survive until his return. This
will be despite attacks from both inside the
Church as has been the case many times over
the centuries, and by attacks over 2000 years
from forces outside the Church.
Among the Christian churches, and there are
thousands, only the Catholic Church has existed
since the time of Jesus. Every other Christian
church is an offshoot of the Catholic Church.
The Eastern Orthodox churches broke away from
unity with the Pope in 1054.
The Protestant churches were established during
Luther’s revolt, which began in 1517. Most of
today’s tens of thousands of Protestant churches are
actually offshoots of the original Protestant
offshoots and the splitting is ongoing!

• Sunday 16
Prov 31:10-13, 19-20, 30-31, Psalm 127:1-5,
St Matthew 25:14-30
The emphasis in the readings today is n fidelity
and on dedication to duty and work. It is more
blessed to give: talents and gifts are given for
service of the community. The Christian is to
be fully dedicated to working in the service of
others while watching and waiting for the life
to come. There is always so much good to be
done for others and so little time in which to do
it.
• Monday 17
Apoc 1:1-4, 2:1-5, Psalm 1:1-4, 6,
St Luke 18:35-43t,
The Apocalypse has the literary form of
allegorical narrative. Using traditional images
of cosmic combat, it looks at the confrontation
of the followers of Jesus with the Roman
Empire. The community of Ephesus is praised
for the stand it has taken on leadership, but its
practice of Christian love is not what it should
be.
St Elizabeth of Hungary, 1207-31, queen at
fourteen, widowed and exiled at twenty,
Franciscan tertiary until her death at twentyfour. A woman of prayer and service of the
poor.
• Tuesday 18
Apoc 3:1-6, 14-22, Psalm 14:2-5,
St Luke 19:1-10
The communities of Sardis and Loadicea are
not praised but are called to repentance, to start
all over again with the basics.
Dedication of the Basilicas: Acts 28:11-16,

• Wednesday 19
Apoc 4:1-11, Psalm 150, St Luke 19:11-28
John is given the vision of the heavenly court
where God reigns with the saints whose
function is to praise and adore God.
• Thursday 20
Apoc 5:1-10, Psalm 149:1-6, 9,
St Luke 19:41-44
The Lamb was sacrificed and with his blood
bought all nations for God.
• Friday 21
Zec 2:14-17, Psalm Lk 1:46-55,
St Matthew 12:46-50
Today is the feast of the Presentation of the
Blessed Virgin Mary; it celebrates Mary in her
grace-filled life, wholly given over to the Holy
Spirit. The Presentation of the Blessed Virgin
Mary, celebrated every year on November 21,
commemorates (in the words of the Liturgy of
the Hours, the daily prayer of the Roman Rite
of the Catholic Church) "that dedication of
herself which Mary made to God from her
very childhood under the inspiration of the
Holy Spirit who filled her with grace at her
Immaculate Conception."
Also known as the Dedication of the Blessed
Virgin Mary, the feast originated in the East,
where it is called the Entry of the Most Holy
Theotokos into the Temple.
• Saturday 22
Apoc 11:4-12, Psalm 143:1-2, 9-10,
St Luke 20:27-40
The two witnesses may refer to Ss Peter and
Paul in their work of building up the new
temple, the Church.
St Cecilia, the patroness of music and
musicians, was a second or third-century
Roman Christian martyr. According to
tradition, she refused to worship the Roman
gods and was beheaded.
