CHEERS School Family, Inc. is a tax-exempt, non-profit organization “where children know love,
sense security, and embrace education”. We have 3 child development centers serving children
ages 6 weeks to 12 years in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia and Northern Shenandoah
Valley. Heritage Child Development Center and Heritage Clubhouse are in Berryville, VA and
Children First Child Development Center is in Kearneysville, WV. Children in our programs spend
their days learning, growing, and developing skills they need to be successful people. Programs
are academically and socially based with curriculum that meets or exceeds state standards.
We strive to serve all families, regardless of their economic status. We accept state-subsidized
children and offer scholarships to lower income families only by seeking community donations
and conducting community fundraisers. We rely on the generosity of individuals, organizations,
and businesses to supplement our revenue, so that we may continue to enroll children from a
wide range of economic backgrounds.
In 2013, CHEERS provided 18 short or long term scholarships to families in need and served 41
children through the Virginia Department of Social Services or West Virginia’s Mountain Heart
Services. Some families may not qualify for assistance due to long waiting lists or their family
may just miss the qualifying metrics. Every child deserves the opportunity to acquire a strong
academic and social emotional foundation to better prepare them for educational success. The
CHEERS Scholarship Fund is our way to increase the access of children from low-income
families to high-quality early education programs that prepare children for school.

“I got pregnant with my twin girls at the age of 17, but luckily I was able to graduate from
high school early so I was done with school by the time they were born. As you can imagine,
providing for two babies without a job was difficult, as was going to college. I took part-time
online classes for a couple years and did a little work at home for my father, but I was
extremely limited in what I could do because of the high cost of childcare. With assistance
through the Department of Social Services and the CHEERS Scholarship Fund, I was able to
afford childcare for my children at a fraction of the cost. This allowed me to take classes in
person and get a part-time job, which I never would have been able to do before. I am
extremely grateful for the opportunity I received that helped my children get a chance to be in
a classroom and interact with other kids and that helped me get to further my education and
get time out of the house to work and earn some additional money. I think these programs

Ernie Rogers is the owner and lead auctioneer for Blacktie
Benefit Auctions. He started the company in 2004 and
helps non-profit organizations in Virginia, Maryland,
Florida, and the District of Columbia maximize their revenue with their annual
fundraising
gala.
Ernie
is
also
the
owner
of
the
United
Country Real Estate franchise, United Country – River City Auction and Realty
(www.UCRiverCity.com), specializing in land, commercial, and residential real estate
at auction and by private treaty. He has considerable experience evaluating,
inspecting and selling real estate at auction. Ernie holds the auctioneer designations
of CAI, AARE, and CES. Ernie is a graduate of Arizona Western College and The
Reppert School of Auctioneering in Auburn, Indiana. Ernie is a retired Captain from
the United States Air Force Reserves. Ernie is also an Associate Real Estate Broker
with Keller Williams Realty (www.KWMidlothian.com) in Midlothian and is one of the
owners of River City Home Team at Keller William (www.RiverCityHomeTeam.com)
where he specializes in helping banks and individual sellers with the sale of
residential real estate.
Ernie is a past member of the board of directors for the Virginia Auctioneers
Association (www.VAA.org) and currently holds the office of Chairman of the Board
for the association. In August of 2004, Ernie won the Virginia State Auctioneer
Championship and is the 2004-2005 Virginia State Champion. Finally, Ernie conducts
about 45 benefit and fundraising auctions each year for non-profit organizations
throughout Virginia, Florida, North Carolina, Maryland, and the District of Columbia.

How does it work?
The auctioneer prepares to flip a coin from the front of the room. But first – everyone
stands up and the auctioneer asks to choose whether they wish to be “heads”
(indicated by putting their hands on their head) or “tails” (indicated by putting their
hands on their rear end). The auctioneer tosses the coin, and the result is announced
– “Heads!” or “Tails!” All those who did not select that choice sit down and this
continues until we are left with only two or three finalists. The last person standing
wins the tablet.
Please see a volunteer (wearing a CHEERS nametag) or go to the registration table
to purchase your chance to play prior to 7:15pm. You must have a beaded
necklace to play. Please leave your beads at the table for a CHEERS volunteer to
pick up.
