And don’t be shy to argue with him over your problems: ill-health, future, money, relationships, being let down (even by God too it may seem). Think also about your family, friends, neighbours, colleagues, those who help you and how you have responded to them. Is there someone or something you should especially bring before God today? But be sure to give him some time to get a thought in or you may end up speaking only to yourself. Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of my heart by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that I may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Prayer of Humble Access We do not presume to come to this your table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table. But you are the same Lord whose nature is always to have mercy. Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear son Jesus Christ and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen. 3 Processional Hymn: O&N 221 Arthur Campbell Ainger (1841-1919) 1 God is working his purpose out as year succeeds to year. God is working his purpose out, and the day is drawing near. Nearer and nearer draws the time, the time that shall surely be, when the earth shall be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea. 2 From the east to the utmost west wherever foot has trod, through the mouths of his messengers echoes forth the voice of God, 'Listen to me, ye continents, ye isles, give ear to me, that the earth shall be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea.' 3 What can we do to the work of God, how to prosper and increase harmony in the human race, and the reign of perfect peace? What can we do to urge the time, the time that shall surely be, when the earth shall be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea? 4 March we forth in the strength of God, his banner is unfurled; let the light of the gospel shine in the darkness of the world: strengthen the weary, heal the sick and set ev’ry captives free, that the earth shall be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea. 5 All our efforts are nothing worth unless God bless the deed; Vain our hopes for the harvest-tide till he brings to life the seed. Yet nearer and nearer draws the time, the time that shall surely be, when the earth shall be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea. 4 In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The Greeting Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. and also with you. Invitation to Confession Jesus said: Before you offer your gift, go and be reconciled. As sisters and brothers in God’s family, we come together to ask our Father for forgiveness…… Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour in thought and word and deed, through negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen. Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 5 The Kyries Lord have mercy Lord have mercy Christ have mercy Christ have mercy Lord have mercy Lord have mercy The Thorne Gloria Glory to God, Glory to God, Glory to God in the Highest. Glory to God in the Highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, Heav’nly King, Almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Glory to God, Glory to God, Glory to God in the Highest. Lord Jesus, Christ, only son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us; You are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. Glory to God, Glory to God, Glory to God, in the Highest. For you alone are the Holy one, You alone are the Lord, You alone are the most high, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the Glory of God the Father. Glory to God, Glory to God, Glory to God in the Highest 6 The Collect O Heavenly Father, whose blessed Son was revealed to destroy the works of the devil and to make us the children of God and heirs of eternal life: grant that we, having this hope, may purify ourselves even as he is pure; that when he shall appear in power and great glory we may be made like him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where he is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen The First Reading: Zephaniah 1:7. 12-18 Be silent before the Lord GOD! For the day of the LORD is at hand; the LORD has prepared a sacrifice, he has consecrated his guests. At that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps, and I will punish the people who rest complacently on their dregs, those who say in their hearts, ‘The LORD will not do good, nor will he do harm.’ Their wealth shall be plundered, and their houses laid waste. Though they build houses, they shall not inhabit them; though they plant vineyards, they shall not drink wine from them. The great day of the LORD is near, near and hastening fast; the sound of the day of the LORD is bitter, the warrior cries aloud there. That day will be a day of wrath, a day of distress and anguish, a day of ruin and devastation, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and thick darkness, a day of trumpet blast and battle cry against the fortified cities and against the lofty battlements. I will bring such distress upon people that they shall walk like the blind; because they have sinned against the LORD, 7 their blood shall be poured out like dust, and their flesh like dung. Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to save them on the day of the LORD’s wrath; in the fire of his passion the whole earth shall be consumed; for a full, a terrible end he will make of all the inhabitants of the earth. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God The Psalm 90: 1-8. 12 R: Satisfy us by your loving-kindness; so shall we rejoice and be glad. Lord, you have been our refuge from one generation to another. Before the mountains were brought forth, or the earth and the world were formed, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. You turn us back to dust and say: ‘Turn back, O children of earth.’ R For a thousand years in your sight are but as yesterday, which passes like a watch in the night. You sweep them away like a dream; they fade away suddenly like the grass. In the morning it is green and flourishes; in the evening it is dried up and withered. R For we consume away in your displeasure; we are afraid at your wrathful indignation. You have set our misdeeds before you and our secret sins in the light of your countenance. R So teach us to number our days that we may apply our hearts to wisdom. R 8 The Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 5: 1-11 Concerning the times and the seasons, brothers and sisters, you do not need to have anything written to you. For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. When they say, ‘There is peace and security,’ then sudden destruction will come upon them, as labour pains come upon a pregnant woman, and there will be no escape! But you, beloved, are not in darkness, for that day to surprise you like a thief; for you are all children of light and children of the day; we are not of the night or of darkness. So then let us not fall asleep as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober; for those who sleep sleep at night, and those who are drunk get drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, and put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. For God has destined us not for wrath but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep we may live with him. Therefore encourage one another and build up each other, as indeed you are doing. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God Gradual Hymn: O&N 552 John Samuel Bewley Monsell (18111875) The final verse of this hymn is sung after the Gospel reading and the words are printed at the end of the Gospel reading 1 O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness! bow down before him, his glory proclaim; with gold of obedience, and incense of lowliness, kneel and adore him, the Lord is his name! 2 Low at his feet lay thy burden of carefulness, high on his heart he will bear it for thee, comfort thy sorrows, and answer thy prayerfulness, guiding thy steps as may best for thee be. 9 3 Fear not to enter his courts in the slenderness of the poor wealth thou wouldst reckon as thine: truth in its beauty, and love in its tenderness, these are the offerings to lay on his shrine. The Gospel Reading: Matthew 25: 14-30 Alleluia, alleluia. I am the light of the world, says the Lord. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life. Alleluia. A reading from the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus said to his disciples, ‘The kingdom of heaven is as if a man, going on a journey, summoned his slaves and entrusted his property to them; to one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. The one who had received the five talents went off at once and traded with them, and made five more talents. In the same way, the one who had the two talents made two more talents. But the one who had received the one talent went off and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money. After a long time the master of those slaves came and settled accounts with them. Then the one who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five more talents, saying, “Master, you handed over to me five talents; see, I have made five more talents.” His master said to him, “Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.” And the one with the two talents also came forward, saying, “Master, you handed over to me two talents; see, I have made two more talents.” His master said to him, “Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.” Then the one who had received the one talent also came forward, saying, “Master, I knew that you were a harsh man, reaping 10 where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not scatter seed; so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.” But his master replied, “You wicked and lazy slave! You knew, did you, that I reap where I did not sow, and gather where I did not scatter? Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and on my return I would have received what was my own with interest. So take the talent from him, and give it to the one with the ten talents. For to all those who have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance; but from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away. As for this worthless slave, throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”’ This is the Gospel of the Lord, Praise to you O Christ 4 These, though we bring them in trembling and fearfulness, he will accept for the name that is dear; mornings of joy give for evenings of tearfulness, trust for our trembling and hope for our fear. Address – David Sheldon from Horsham Matters The Creed – please stand Let us declare our faith in God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, 11 true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayers of Intercession Lord, in your mercy hear our prayer. or Lord hear us Lord graciously hear us. Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon them. 12 Hail Mary, full of grace the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Offertory Hymn: O&N 32 Charles Wesley (1707-1788) 1 And can it be that I should gain An interest in the Saviour's blood? Died he for me, who caused his pain? For me, who him to death pursued? Amazing love! How can it be That thou, my God, shouldst die for me? 2 'Tis mystery all : the Immortal dies! Who can explore his strange design? In vain the first-born seraph tries To sound the depths of love divine. 'Tis mercy all! Let earth adore, Let angel minds enquire no more. 3 He left his Father's throne above So free, so infinite his grace Emptied himself of all but love, And bled for Adam's helpless race. 'Tis mercy all, immense and free; For, O my God, it found out me! 4 Long my imprisoned spirit lay Fast bound in sin and nature's night; Thine eye diffused a quickening ray I woke, the dungeon flamed with light, My chains fell off, my heart was free, I rose, went forth, and followed thee. 13 5 No condemnation now I dread; Jesus, and all in him, is mine! Alive in him, my living head, And clothed in righteousness divine, Bold I approach the eternal throne, And claim the crown, through Christ, my own. The Peace Christ is our peace. He has reconciled us to God In one body by the cross. We meet in this name and share his peace. The peace of the Lord be always with you. and also with you. Let us offer one another a sign of peace. Prayers over the Gifts Blessed are you, Lord, God of all Creation. Through your goodness we have this bread to offer, which earth has given and human hands have made. It will become for us the bread of life. All Blessed be God for ever All Blessed are you, Lord, God of all Creation. Through your goodness we have this wine to offer, fruit of the vine and work of human hands. It will become our spiritual drink. Blessed be God for ever. 14 Pray, my dears, that our sacrifice may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father. May the Lord accept this sacrifice at your hands, for the praise and glory of his name, for our good, and the good of all his Church. The Eucharistic Prayer The Lord is here. His spirit is with us. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give thanks and praise. Father, we give you thanks and praise through your beloved Son Jesus Christ, your living Word, through whom you have created all things; who was sent by you in your great goodness to be our Saviour. By the power of the Holy Spirit he took flesh; as your Son, born of the blessed Virgin, he lived on earth and went about among us; he opened wide his arms for us on the cross; he put an end to death by dying for us; and revealed the resurrection by rising to new life; so he fulfilled your will and won for you a holy people. And now we give you thanks because you are the source of light and life; you made us in your image and called us to new life in him. 15 Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and singing: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness; grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit, and according to your holy will, these gifts of bread and wine may be to us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this as often as you drink it in remembrance of me. Let us proclaim the truths of our faith. Christ has died: Christ is risen: Christ will come again. And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world; rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, 16 and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate this memorial of our redemption. As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we bring before you this bread and this cup and we thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdom all who share this one bread and one cup, so that we, in the company of [N and] all the saints, may praise and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. Amen. Please kneel or sit The Lord’s Prayer As our Saviour taught us, so we pray, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen 17 Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread. Agnus Dei Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, grant us peace. This is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Happy are those who are called to his supper. Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word, and I shall be healed. Communion Hymn: O&N 13 W.J. Sparrow-Simpson (1859-1952) 1 All for Jesus--all for Jesus, this our song shall ever be; for we have no hope, nor Savior, if we have not hope in thee. 2 All for Jesus--thou wilt give us strength to serve thee, hour by hour, none can move us from thy presence, while we trust thy love and power. 18 3 All for Jesus--at thine altar thou wilt give us sweet content; there, dear Lord, we shall receive thee in the solemn sacrament. 4 All for Jesus thou hast loved us; all for Jesus thou hast died; all for Jesus thou art with us; all for Jesus crucified. 5 All for Jesus--all for Jesus-this the Church's song must be; till, at last, her sons are gathered one in love and one in thee. Communion Hymn: O&N 81 John L Bell (born 1949) and Graham Maule (born 1958) 1 Bread is blessed and broken, wine is blessed and poured: take this and remember Christ the Lord. 2 Share the food of heaven Earth can not afford. Here is grace in essence Christ the Lord. 3 Know yourself forgiven, find yourself restored, meet a friend for ever Christ the Lord. God has kept his promise sealed by sign and word: here, for those who want him Christ the Lord. 4 19 Prayer after Communion O Gracious Lord, in this holy sacrament you give substance to our hope: bring us at the last to that fullness of life for which we long; through Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen Almighty God, we thank you for feeding us with the body and blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Through him we offer you our souls and bodies to be a living sacrifice. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen. The Blessing O God the Father, by whose glory Christ was raised from the dead, Strengthen you to walk with him in his risen life: and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and all whom you love, living and departed now and always. Amen. Post-Communion Hymn: 281 Percy Dearmer (1867-1936) after John Bunyan (1628-1688) 1 He who would valiant be 'Gainst all disaster, Let him in constancy Follow the master. There's no discouragement Shall make him once relent His first avowed intent To be a pilgrim. 20 2 Who so beset him round With dismal stories, Do but themselves confound His strength the more is. No foes shall stay his might, Though he with giants fight: He will make good his right To be a pilgrim. 3 Since, Lord, thou dost defend Us with thy Spirit, We know we at the end Shall life inherit. Then fancies flee away! I'll fear not what men say, I'll labour night and day To be a pilgrim. The Dismissal Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. In the name of Christ. Amen.
