Newest Wisconsin Moosehaven Resident Moves in As of October 8, the newest Wisconsin resident of Moosehaven came from La Crosse Moose Lodge 1920. His name: Jerry Christen. Jerry brought down his precious belongings as well as enough wood to keep the residents working on projects for months. Jerry treated Ed and Becky Johnson (Clintonville M o o s e Lodge/Chapter members) to a 5 hour tour (and no, they did not get lost). And, yes, Jerry “loves” it already. They also met the other new member, Ed Harper (above) from Illinois. On the “tour”, they met Trudi and Bill Puda, members from the Janesville Moose Lodge #197, residing in the FloridaB e r m u d a facility. Pictured above is Clintonville Moose Lodge #1502 member Ed Johnson, Trudi, and Jerry outside the Puda’s door. The following photo is of Jerry and friends at Moosehaven All, including Ed and Becky, are on the end of the Pier dedicated to Moosehaven in 1962 by the WOTM. They were talking among themselves and sharing their great experiences here at Moosehaven. All residents at Moosehaven, have a great time. For more information on Moosehaven and its different avenues of residing there, contact Ross Fleet, Director of Admissions [email protected] or http://www.moosehaven.org/Group/ Admissions.asp Are you Singing in the Rain? You can and maybe even get to Nashville. Members can qualify for a free trip to the 2015 International Moose Convention and a chance to win $5,000! For the first time ever, the Moose is searching for the finest karaoke singers from across the Fraternity. All active members of the LOOM and WOTM are eligible to participate and the top 12 finalists will travel to the 2015 International Convention t o compete for the top prize in front of a packed convention audience. Each finalist will receive round-trip airfare (or equivalent) and two nights lodging at the Opryland Hotel with cash prizes of $5,000, $2,000 and $1,000 going to the top three performers. Lodge/Chapters have their competition; then move up through District and / or Association competitions in order to qualify for the finale at the Nashville Convention. Association winners will be responsible for sending DVD’s or audio recordings to Moose International, where music professionals and media contacts from around the Chicagoland area will narrow the field. What does that mean to the Women of the Moose? It means each chapter will be having their College of Regents meeting, honoring those who have had their year as “Lady in Waiting”, those who get their green tassels changed to red and those Collegians who will become “fully dressed” when they receive their Red Stole. What is your Lodge and Chapter doing? As Gary has stated, this should be a yearlong project not just a week one. Is planning done? Tree Lighting at Mooseheart is on December 6th. If you ever questioned why you pay your dues, spend this day at Mooseheart. You will never question it again. Youth Awareness is something that we as chapters should have been attempting to do for years, but I realize that the same core people are stretched tight. Is there a new co-worker that might be willing to take it over? Something to think about. Remember December is coming up, are we doing fund raisers to send gifts to our Sunshine Children and Sunshine Grandparents? Remember, we took on this responsibility, so let’s not forget about them! Please have a safe and blessed Thanksgiving. Make sure that Mooseheart and Moosehaven are two of the things you are thankful for. Fraternally Lana LaVelle, DGR 2014-15 From the Wisconsin Moose Association President Hello everyone, I’m honored and proud to be your new association president. My goals for us this new year are of course retention and new members. Going hand in hand with that is better communication with our members. Getting the message out about promotions and our charities are extremely important. Our district and lodge meetings are the place to get this done and get the info out. The district presidents and I will be checking newsletters and posted information in lodges during our visits. Please make the extra effort to make sure our members have all the tools necessary to build and maintain our membership and keep our lodge homes clean and inviting. Don’t hesitate to contact me or any of the chairmen with any questions you may have. Thanks for all your help and hard work. Fraternally Brian Mifflin WMA President Message from the Territory #32 Manager Thank you to all of the lodges for getting their “Lodge Safety Inspection” form in; we were 100%! November is fellowship month and with it the lodge fellows have a big responsibility in selecting their new candidate(s). This must be done properly and confidentiality is a must! If you have any questions on this please give me a call. The other big item for November is RETENTION WEEK (November 2-8), all lodge NEED to participate in this. Not only will it help the lodge’s active member numbers but you could have a chance at over $7000 in prizes being given away by Moose International. None of this will happen if you do not participate or if you do not send in the form after the event. The start of November marks one other important item, the half way mark for the moose year. We need to check to see if we are still on target for the goals that you set or were set for you. If you are not on target go back and see what you need to change so that you can reach your goals. All of the goals are obtainable as long as you put the effort in. Don’t over think what you need to change, get “BACK TO BASICS” and keep it simple, ask for help. Some of your members are just there waiting on you to ask, they just will not step forward otherwise. You are being given the tools so that you can have a successful year, please use them! Fraternally Gary Beck WI Territorial Manager prize drawings will be held for those fraternal units that conduct activities during this week. ! From November 2 – 8, all Lodges, Chapters and Moose Legions are asked to develop a series of activities that will highlight the positive areas of the Moose and reinforce the benefits of membership. Activities across the Fraternity will include Heart of the Community projects, member dinners, fraternal nights, lodge improvement efforts, expired member phone-a-thons, and other programs developed locally. “The inaugural Member Retention Week helped inspire a number of our lodges and chapters to become more active in their retention activities not only during this brief time span, but t h r o u g h o u t t h e y e a r, ” s a i d K i m Th o m p s o n , a ssi sta n t d i re cto r o f Retention and Recognition for the Membership Department. “This week really helped focus our attention on r e t e n t i o n , although I would encourage our lodges and chapters to continue to use the Expired Member Kits, which are sent each month via email, in order to aide in retaining expired members on a regular basis.” Early planning is the key. Each Lodge and Chapter will be sent a package of resources, suggestions and information closer to the event that will help them prepare for this week, but it is suggested to put the event on planning calendars now. Lodges, Chapters and Moose Legions are also encouraged to use their existing events and activities as part of their week-long celebration. Additionally, cash and merchandise Back to Basics / Wisconsin Style The MOOSE Is the BEST Kept SECRET! Our Lodges and Chapters are the best kept secret in town. So secret in fact, most people outside of our Fraternity have no idea that we exist. Those that pass by our buildings know the name, Loyal Order of Moose, but have no idea of our mission or purpose. For those of you that might have forgotten the Moose Mission, let me remind you. The Moose Mission: • Fraternal & Community Service Programs • Mooseheart • Moosehaven • MEMBERSHIP GROWTH Our Lodges offer numerous Fraternal Programs, Benefits, and opportunities to “give back” to our communities through the Heart of the Community programs it will make your head spin. But as with most everything in life, you only get back what you put into it. In order for our Lodges to grow, we all must do our part and get “Back to Basics”. We all need to share the secret of the Moose with our friends, families, and communities. The saying “I’ve done my part – let someone else do it” is no longer going to work. The time is now to muster up the masses, and get the word out. I am 100% positive that if all of us worked together we could be plus 1 in membership growth each and every year. All we have to do is listen to our current members, provide to their needs, maintain our Lodge buildings, and spread the word. Note the attached state membership campaign. Posters are posted in your lodges. Feel free to post ones here and from the web page. The new one will be to the lodges shortly. From the Sports Committee Chair I’ve taken on the responsibility of being your new sports director. I look forward to the challenge and hearing from you, and any suggestions you might have. Feel free to contact me at my e-mail: [email protected] We are in the process of having individual sports getting their policies and/or bylaws for their sport up and running. State Pool The Moose state pool tournament was held on October 18 and 19; and, as always, there was a fine turnout. This is the first year for the “FRANK BARCA” traveling trophy, dedicated in loving memory of our departed Pilgrim. The results and some photos will be at the end of this newsletter Thinking Sports Dan Threlkeld WMA Sports Chair You or Your Friend’s Moose Membership Expired? An Expired Member’s Options: The Moose Fraternity’s General Laws now allow expired members additional options to renew their membership once their dues have expired. At the end of the newsletter is more on what to do and how one might choose to re-enter the Moose Lodge / Chapter. From our Legion Ambassador Legion / Lodge Leaders. I have a request for you as my first item of my term as Moose International’s Moose Legion Ambassador to Wisconsin. But first . . . On October 21 there was a note sent out by Gary Beck asking for some help from all of the Moose Legion Secretaries in bring some NEW MOOSE LEGION MEMBERS(CANDIDATES) to Ed Lehman's day January 3,2015 so we can hold a nice enrollment in ED"S(HONOR)and as of yet we haven't heard from anyone (PLEASE GET BACK TO GARY WITH AN ANSWER NOW NOT NEXT MONTH) First and foremost, I need to have the Moose Legion meeting dates for the various districts for the 2014-15 year. I will try to make at least one per area. Secondly, I also need the Secretaries names, phone numbers, and emails from the various districts, as well as the same for the assistant secretaries. Finally, I would like the individual legion meeting dates so I can try to work some of them into my schedule as if time makes it possible. At the end of this newsletter Ed Johnson has placed the Legion Projects from Moose International. It’s a great idea to have each Legion get theirs in during November and save 20% on the Primary project. Have a great November. Respectfully, Ambassador Robert Rufer From the WOTM Membership Chair Greetings! What an absolutely amazingly awesome conference we had in Janesville! We truly got “Back to Basics” and having the conference in one of our Moose homes was a good way to do just that. Thank you to all the Chapters and Coworkers that contributed to the Moose / Packer pool basket. Through everyone’s contributions we were able to raise enough money to pay the men back and have a little reserve for the next membership campaign. Which by the way, is sponsor 5 members and get a WI WOTM shirt (these will be very similar to the lime green WI WOTM shirts except they will be a very pretty blue). So let’s get back to basics and work on getting some new members. Congratulations to Lana Lavelle, our new Deputy Grand Regent. She was the lucky winner of the Green Bay Packer pool basket. And Congratulations to Amy Rynerson; she was the lucky winner of the Moose pool basket. The first week is November is Membership Retention week. Retention is something that we all need to work on everyday but International has set aside a week to focus on Membership Retention. What do you have planned for this week? Maybe something special? I’d love to hear your ideas and share them with other Chapters: [email protected] ) Again, I cannot say “Thank You” enough to everyone that made this magnificent conference happen! It’s so nice to catch up with friends from all over the state and meet new friends. So let’s get back to basics and work on our Membership!!!! It’s Time to Think Nashville 2015 Nashville’s connection to music is unequaled, and its reputation as Music City has been consistently proven for over 200 years. Live music can be seen and heard every day and night of the week in Nashville. The world-famous honkytonks, located on Broadway, offer free live music 365 days a year. And with more than 130 music venues around town ranging from large arenas and concert halls to small clubs and featuring nearly every genre of music, it’s easy to see why this is the city that “music calls home.” Nashville will also be “home” to the 2015 International Moose Convention from July 3 – 7 at t h e Moose Charities Video http://m.youtube.com/watch? v=hZToZJudTfg Click on and see what ‘our’ Moose Charities does. State Dart Tournament Completes and A Good Time at 301 Had by All Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center. As one of the Moose Fraternity’s most popular destinations, Nashville has offered our members a unique and entertaining experience each and every time we’ve visited. Our convention, over the 4th of July weekend, features new and exciting events and includes opportunities to visit the world-famous Grand Ole Opry and watch one of the best fireworks displays in the country! For the second year in a row, Moose members will also have the chance to participate in a variety of Heart of the Community events, where we’ll again show the local community what it really means to be a Moose. For the first time ever, the Moose will also crown an International Karaoke Champion who will have worked his or her way up from the Lodge competitions all the way to the international finals. Come see what kind of talent our Brothers and Co-workers possess – the winner may be from your Lodge or Chapter! Don’t miss out on your opportunity to learn more about the Moose while having a great time with members from across our great Fraternity. For many of you, Nashville is a reasonable drive away, so there’s no excuse not to be there. Whether you are an officer or simply an average member, this convention has plenty to offer.
