OCTOBER 2014
HUNTERS SHOW PROMISE
There is no denying it has been a tough start to the season on the field but there
are plenty of positives to take out of the first couple of rounds of cricket for
2014/15.
Attendance at training and the PA on Wednesday and Saturday nights has been
outstanding with 25-30 players and supporters often coming back to share their
stories of the day’s play.
The First XI has been competitive so far without registering a win. It has been
only small lapses in concentration and perhaps a bit of a lack of confidence that
has prevented them getting a win. The top-order has struggled in general, but
where in previous seasons we may have collapsed to be out for around 100, in
both games we have rallied to make 160+. A solid top-order performance will see
us score over 200 which will be very defendable. Johnny Stokes, Keifer Martyn
and Nadun Maliduwa have looked good at times with the bat while Nadun,
Shamil Abeyagunawardene and Prageeth Kumarasiri have performed well with
the ball.
The Second XI has struggled with the bat and ball but shown some grit which will
serve them well throughout the season. Again, rather than capitulating, the
batsmen have dug in and batted out 80 overs in the first week and 65 in the
second despite scoring less than 170 both times. Andre Kokoschko has been
great opening up with 30 in both innings and has been well supported by Nick
Kerin.
The Third XI has recorded a win and two losses with Shayne Wijetunge and
Hasith Nuwan performing well with the bat and ball. Nesith Weerasinghe took
the first 5-wicket for the club and Kishore Avula also smashed a rapid 50 in the
first game.

ROUND 1 WRAP
While the Hunters did not secure a win in Round 1 of Season 2014/15, there were
plenty of positives that we will take away from these games and use to go forward.
The First XI was set a formidable total of 10/270, despite being in reasonable
control after 60 overs with SHOC crawling along at 4/130. The opposition showed
what can be done with wickets in had in the last hour and with a little help from a
few drop catches managed to build a good total. Joe Duigan (3/45) and Nadun
Maliduwa (3/37) did most of the damage with the ball. Our batting innings started
horribly with Pommy import Dan Wrenn and Kiefer Martyn back in the shed and
270 looking a very long way away at 2/1. Randy Perera (33) and Arv Raja (18)
built a strong 54 run partnership before Randy went with wickets falling at regular
intervals after that. At 5/77 it appeared AHOS may again crumble to a sub-100
score but a grinding innings from skipper Johnny Stokes (55*) and support from
some of the lower order saw the Hunters get to 163 all out. A significant loss, but
with probably our two best bats not contributing and a bit to learn about bowling
at the end of the day, we feel there is plenty to work with this season.
Man of the Match: John Stokes 55 not out
The Second XI has a rough first day of the season with a young Pom smashing an
undefeated 200 as SPOC passed 400. While a win was probably never on the
cards, the Hunters showed a lot of character to bat the day out and finish 8/171
after their 80 overs. Andre Kokoschko (33) and Nick Kerin (34) opened the
innings well with a 75 run opening partnership. Again wickets fell at regular
intervals but Kasun Samarakoon (21*) batted well with the tail to avoid being
bowled out.
Man of the Match: Kasun Samarakoon 21 not out and 0/30 from 8 overs
The LOs got a little closer to a win but fell 40 runs short of a first up win. MSCC
batted first and got to 7/227 from their 40 overs, Nesith Weerasinghe dominating
with 5/31 off his 9 overs. AHOS again started well with openers Shanith (19)
and Shayne (56) doing well before Kish (51) smashed a quick-fire half century,
but this was not enough with the boys being 8/188 from their 40 overs.
Man of the Match: Nesith Weerasinghe 5/31 (9)

ROUND 2 WRAP
BLAST FROM THE PAST
The First XI have squandered a great opportunity to pick up their first win for the
season after having Concordia in big trouble at 7/81, only lose by two wickets.
Prageeth and Shamil were on fire early picking up 3 and 2 wickets, respectively.
Jagdish D’Souza also took 2 wickets and 2 catches but a 69-run 9th wicket
partnership got Concordia over the line for a win. In the first week AHOS started
well with a 41-run opening partnership before Shanith was out for 26, Keifer
Martyn batted well for 36 while Nadun was also excellent in the lower order with
34 and helped get the Hunters to 172. But to be competitive we know that the top
order needs to fire and give our bowlers 200+ to defend.
A1 Semi Final vs Pulteney OS,
Man of the Match – K Martyn (36 runs)
The Second XI had another tough day after struggling to 135 from 65 overs on
Day 1. Andre Kokoschko (31) and Nick Kerin (20) put on another good start of 43
but the Hunters struggled to form solid partnerships with Nick Kokoschko (20) the
only other batsman to pass 19. The total was always going to be tough to defend
but an early wicket gave them a glimmer of hope. That dissolved quickly on Day 2
with Unley passing the score by lunch at 3/150 and continuing to punish the
bowlers on their way to 8/354. Nick and Andre Kokoschko both took two wickets.
Man of the Match – A Kokoschko (31 runs and 2 wickets)
The Third XI split their two matches with a great win against Marion followed by
a bad loss to Modbury. Shayne Wijetunge (76) and Hasith Nuwan (70) starred on
the way to 216 against Marion before the same two ripped apart their batsmen
with 3/12 and 4/26, respectively. The Hunters ran out comfortable 56 run winners.
Man of the Match – H Nuwan (70 runs and 4 wickets)
Last weekend against Modbury did not go so well despite restricting them to 5/176
of their 40 overs. Jared was the best bowler with 2/27 off 5 overs. Unfortunately,
with a few key batsmen out the Hunters crumbled to all out 43 in just 18 overs.
Man of the Match – None awarded

17-18 March 2007
AHOS had surged home late in the season
to finish fourth and faced a formidable
Pulteney outfit that had finished top of
the table. Boasting several players with
years of A Grade District experiences of
the
likes
of
Ashmead,
Ritossa,
Cunningham and the aging but still
express Steve Matchett, Pulteney were
strong favourites for the flag.
There was no love lost between the two
sides over the years with several ultracompetitive cricketers on both sides, not
afraid to tell each other what they were
thinking. AHOS won the toss and elected
to bat on a typically slow and low Morgan
Oval deck. Brad Portlock was dismissed
early before Chas Thomas and Jake
Carrick-Smith went about building a big
2nd wicket partnership. It was slow going
but at the tea break AHOS were still onedown and the formidable Pulteney pace
attack was starting to tire. Carrick-Smith
was dismissed shortly after tea for a wellmade 39 and the following batsmen in
Jones, Loveder, Cornelius and Rankin,
while occupying the crease for a while,
were unable to free up against a tight
attack, none making it past 13. Skipper
Warren Mitchell came in with some late
hitting to score 26 not out and along with
Chas’s 85 the Hunters had a very
defendable 217 on the board.
Day 2 was an arm wrestle as both sides
gained ascendancy at different points of
the game. Cunningham who had almost
single-handedly won the minor round
game for Pulteney with runs and wickets
was the last recognised batsman left and
hitting them well as the gap narrowed to
less than 40 runs. Cunny hit several large
balls to give POS a sniff before launching a
flat straight drive in the direction of Chas
at mid-on who jumped high and to his
right to snag a sensational catch and seal
a Grand Final berth for AHOS, their first
ever in the A1 competition. A young Craig
Dollman was impressive with 4/53 while
Wozza led from the front with 5/54.
