School Board 2014 Recently at the final School Board meeting of the year the Board reflected on our student targets and endorsed the school to be a very high performing school. My sincere thanks to the Board members for their commitment and time to the Board this year. Board tenures have been extended to the end of semester one next year in light of the Department of Education School Review in May 2015. This newsletter highlights the tremendous success the school has achieved recently in a range of areas. WA State Athletics Championship Perth—Sporting Excellence Broome Senior High School Special Athletics Academy which started this year with the support of Athletics WA recently sent six students to the WA All Schools Athletics Championships. Accompanied by teacher Michael Lorraine, coach Edwina Kelsch and parents as supporters, all flew to Perth for the three day meet. The six students (Year 8 - Jettson Brown & Jaymee Park, Year 9 - Joshua Marshall, Year 10 - Damon Enosa & Vaughn Ogden, Year 11 - Sandy Cole-Manolis) were entered into range of track and field events and for most it was their first ever athletics carnival not held on a grassy school oval, instead on a world class athletics track at the WA Athletics Stadium. The students conducted themselves impeccably over the three days of competition, both on and off the track and gained the attention of many Perth based coaches who commented on their high level of natural athletic ability. All the students set personal bests (PBs) with 14 PBs in total. In addition Damon achieved a silver medal in the u/16 boys Triple Jump, fourth in the u/16 boys 100m final, as well running sixth in the u/16 200m final (by less than a second) against the very best competitors in the state. Outstanding effort by Damon and by all the students. The school thanks Edwina Kelsch and David Marion for their coaching during the year, Athletics WA and Athletics Australia for their continued sponsorship of the Academy. Students interested in joining the Academy for 2015 please contact the school. The challenge, in line with this year’s topic of Feeding Our Future, saw students use only food based materials to create a landing pad for the next Mission to Mars. By analysing the properties of food stuffs in their original condition, students then pondered how changing their physical properties might alter their ability to be useful such as boiling pasta or making glue from milk. Of the six groups, only one lost its pilot on landing. The future for space travel looks promising if these bright young individuals are responsible for the engineering behind the next landing! Yr 11 Integrated Science—Finding Nemo Year 11 Integrated Science students are currently learning how to operate a commercial fish hatchery. Designing biofilters and setting up appropriate breeding pairs, the class has been armed with the task of successfully breeding the next generation of clownfish. Each day consists of cleaning tanks, checking water quality, diagnosing illnesses and feeding the fish their very own, and very smelly, seafood smorgasbord. The project has been an exciting way to learn about Biology and Chemistry of water while understanding how to care for living creatures. Not to mention how to fillet, scale and fin fish, dequill squid and shuck mussels! A visit to the Kimberley Training Institutes Aquaculture facility gave the students a good insight into how to set the operation up, and has also been our ongoing source of fresh saltwater, and of course, of our clownfish!
