CEO’s Remarks
Dr T. P. Matsika
GET READY TO WORK
IF WE ARE TO FIX THE
ECONOMY
Z
imbabwe needs hands
that will work and brains
to propel it forward. Nations must work- for, as
long as the earth remains, seed
time and harvest time shall not
cease that is God’s principle.
The widely celebrated UNWTO came
and went, and Zimbabwe continues to
groan under pangs of a decade-andhalf long industrial haemorrhaging that
has seen the economy teetering on the
brink. The economy continues to choke
under the weight of a crippling liquidity
crunch among other financial hurdles.
However, for the umpteenth time, we
heard the old tired rhetoric of economic
boom and restoration from prosperity
movements across the country. Zimbabwe has (according to independent
economists) a staggering unemployment rate of 85%. Naturally, this has
seen thousands of graduates bending
themselves into selling mobile phones,
airtime and undertaking demeaning
ventures in order to make a living.
The economic penury has created a
fertile ground for the manipulation
of vulnerable minds of the desperate.
Employment has remained elusive and
it is heartrending to see degree-holders
standing behind vegetable stalls. Education was never meant to be an end
in itself but sadly, this is the situation
gripping the land between Zambezi
2014 Tourism Magazine| page 12
and Limpopo. Of the 13 000 000 people,
only 1900 000 are formally employed.
Zimbabwean exports, which should
breathe life into an economy, are far
outweighed by the things we import.
No country ever thrived when it has to
import more than it exports. Our Gross
Domestic Product (GDP) remains very
low as compared to other GDPs in the
region. Our beleaguered government
continues to decry depressed revenue
collection for the underpayment of the
civil service.
The liquidity crunch continues to
ground the industry and our roads,
which should critically enable the
economy, everything is in an indescribably appalling state; popular comedian
Kapfupi had to act in one scene fishing
from a pothole, reflecting on this sad
reality. Marriages continue to crumble
as husbands troop to foreign lands in
search of better fortunes. Downsizing,
retrenching and unpaid leave have
become common in most organisations
as they battle for survival.
Now, it is a psychologically established
fact that when the human mind is
plagued by a tortuous and unrelenting catastrophe for a long time, it
can readily lose its rational powers of
thought. Most people who live in the
rubble have been branded as ‘mad’, yet
they may simply be the hapless victims
of loneliness, distress, and poverty.
Distress can adversely affect the mind.
Now, could it be that lack and social
trauma over the years have affected
our capacity of thought that we readily
believe anything that promises to end
our woes?
This is exactly the question, or rather
puzzle that began playing a fandango in my mind after listening to the
early Christmas religious messages and
juxtaposing with the real situation on
the ground. It seems we have become
a people plagued by economic stagnation and social distress to the end that
we have lost the power of objective
foresight. We easily yield to anything
that promises hope. How can people so
readily embrace claims that the overa-decade long economic meltdown
would end overnight because God has
“judged” against it? How can multitudes
believe that the over-80% unemployment rate can simply be “judged” and
vanish overnight?
How can we honestly be made to believe, every year, that we will experience
miraculous boom when reality continues to stare us in the face? Zimbabwe
needs hands that will work and brains
that will propel it forward – that is God’s
principle. Nations must work, as long as
earth remains, seed time and harvest
time shall not cease. Wealth without
work has never been God’s principle.
It would appear that we have lost our
objectivity as a people. In any case,
www.megafestholdings.co.zw
did God ever say the ills of the present
world will end in the hear-and-now?
Did God Almighty ever hint that judgment of whatever form starts on this
earth?
In contrast, Zimbabweans continue
to receive promises of wealth, prosperity and economic boom each year
but the reality on the ground tells a
sobering story. Minister of Finance
Patrick Chinamasa couldn’t have said
it better when he denounced quickfix approaches for a shift in economic
fortunes. “Things cannot happen until
you put brick after brick…” he said. Zimbabwe needs hands that will work and
practical ideas to surge forward.
My dear friends, the sooner we wake up
to this reality the better for us as a people. These feel-good promises while we
sit clad in suits and outfits will not fix
the economy. Indeed, we need to come
back to the physical world and get real
about our national and foreign policies.
We need to act on graft, attract investment and improve fiscal policies. We
need re-engagement with the international donor community and revival of
industry.
“As long as earth remains, seedtime and
harvest… shall not cease” (Gen 8:22).
NATIONS

AS THE EARTH

When Things Go Wrong:
Act Quickly!
Act quickly
Act now!
O
nce I knew a man, who had a
very successful supermarket,
in a flourishing area. One day,
he came to me, and told me
that he had heard that a large company,
which employed a lot of people, in the
area was due to shut down.
After assessing the situation with him,
for a few hours, I suggested he sell the
business, or simply close down. I urged
him to act quickly, whilst he still had
options. He responded emotionally, and
angrily. He even accused me of jealousy!
A year later, I passed by his shop; it was
a sad, sad sight. The bustling activity,
had gone, and the shelves were empty.
It was exactly what I had told him would
happen.
Eventually, the creditors, moved in. His
shop was sold, his home, his car. He suffered from all manner of ailments, and
was often in hospital, with High Blood
Pressure....all totally unnecessary.
If you are running a business, or even a
social enterprise; sometimes things can
go wrong....Very wrong!
Years ago, I realised that even with the
best idea in the world... Things can go
2014 Tourism Magazine| page 16
wrong.... Very wrong!
Take charge. Show responsibility.
So what are you going to do,
now?
2
And you know what, more often than
not, it is not your fault:
- Maybe it is the work of an "enemy"...
- Maybe its government policy, in your
country;
- Maybe someone you trusted, let you
down;
- Maybe it did not rain!
- Maybe.. Maybe....
There is no point, in just sitting there,
like a deer caught in the lights of an
oncoming car!
Each and every day that you delay to
act, makes the solution much more
difficult and much more costly, and the
consequences more dire.
When things go wrong, there are five
things that you must do:
1
. Accept that things have
gone wrong:
It does not matter whose fault it is.
. Make an unemotional
assessment, with the help of
someone who is independent minded,
and was not involved, in how you got
there. Don't just listen to people who
tell you what you want to hear, or those
who stroke your ego.
3
. Then come up with a
plan, even if it means changing
direction; downsizing; or even shutting
down, what you had started. To do so,
does not mean you have failed. This is
courage.
4
. Act quickly, and boldly. Do
not procrastinate. There are very
few things that correct themselves,
without you doing something.
5
. Do the right thing. Don't
compound the problem by trying
to conceal it. Don't be proud, even to
ask for help, and most importantly to
apologise to those who have been
negatively affected.

How To Make Today Count!
Make those memories special, today matters!
A
re you the type of person who
worries a lot about the future?
Do you have sleepless nights
because you worry about what
will happen tomorrow? Do you worry so
much about it that you end up not enjoying today? I am not a happy go lucky
person, I take my responsibilities in
life very seriously. But one thing I have
learned is that I also need to make sure
that every-day counts. We can easily get
carried with the burdens of life and end
up not being able to live TODAY to the
fullest.
Remember that we can never bring
back today and today matters! I am
not saying that we need to forget our
obligations, but rather, just make sure
that we do not forget to enjoy the little
pleasures in life. Here are some tips that
I hope will allow you to enjoy and live
the moment!
1
. Start a hobby – Or, you can
work on what you are passionate
about. Don’t put it off for another day.
If you are able to make your life a bit
happier by doing what you love to do
the most, then by all means, go for it.
We will never be “not busy,” so try to
allot some time for that special activity
that you have been trying to start for
ages, but could not because of time
constraints.
2
. Make a new friend – This is
a great way to open your horizons.
Maybe you have a new office mate or a
new neighbour. Walk up to that person
and introduce yourself. Who knows, he
or she could end up to be your BFF in
the future. You will never know unless
you try, so be the first one to approach.
You will not lose anything by trying.
3
. Do something daring – Try
bungee jumping or exploring nature for example. Ask a friend to go with
you for motivation. The adrenaline will
surely make you feel alive again.
2014 Tourism Magazine| page 20
4
. Volunteer – Dr Mujuru once
told me that it brings her so
much happiness when she helps the
homeless in her area. She says there
is a certain joy that you feel by doing
something that you never expect anything in return from. Now I know that
feeling since I had the chance to join
a group that taught the less fortunate
children arts and crafts one day. She is
absolutely right. Just seeing the smiles
and the joy in the eyes of the kids when
we all finished the project was priceless.
All you need to share is one day, believe
me, it will be worth the time you spend
with people less fortunate than you. It
will also enable you to appreciate what
you have.
pictures or read your journal again. You
will see a side of yourself that you never
thought was there in the beginning.
How precious the memories are and
the people that helped to make those
memories special.
Maybe you have something that you
can add on the list here. We would love
to hear from you.
5
. Start the day positive –
The first thing I do when I wake up
is say a little prayer. I try to make sure
that I clear my mind and start off fresh
each new day. Don’t start the day by
pondering about what is wrong with
everything around you. By starting your
day in a positive way, you will make the
most out of that time no matter what
the day brings. Try it, you won’t regret it,
I promise.
6
. Make the day memorable – Write it down, create a jour-
nal and/or take pictures. Write down
how you felt that day. Then, at some
point in the future, look back at the

If you don't like your harvest,
review your seed
W
E HAVE just gone through
that season Charles Mungoshi aptly described as
“waiting for the rain”. For
those among us with agriculture in their
hearts, it is that time to look up to the
skies expectantly for the advent of the
rainy season.
Zimbabwe is still to strike a balance between agriculture that is directly dependent on the rainy season and agriculture anchored in irrigation using stored
water bodies. Our harvest remains a
direct function of the performance of
each rain season.
There is nothing that breeds optimism
like the coming of the rains in Africa.
A key component of this renewed
optimism is the place seed plays in the
renewal of various living species.
For the farmer, it is impilo/hupenyu, the
very life that sustains a livelihood. This
is anchored in an old principle located
in the first book of the bible in Genesis
8v22 which predicted that “as long as
the earth endures, seed time and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter,
day and night will never cease”.
For us “sons and daughters of the soil”,
we cannot divorce ourselves from seed.
The seed you plant is a predictor and
directly correlates to the harvest you
should expect. The tobacco industry in
Zimbabwe every year can predict the
size of each year’s crop by the amount
of seed sold that season.
You can prophetically order the size of
your harvest by what you do at planting. The capacity of your iphahla/tsapi is
determined by your seed.
Farmers tell me that seed has three unchanging characteristics. Firstly, every
seed produces after its own kind. If you
plant maize, you can expect to harvest
maize and if you put tomato seed to the
ground you will produce tomatoes.
Secondly, a seed produces a harvest
much later than when planted. Farming
teaches us delayed gratification. Only
fungi and germs reproduce almost instantly everything else you have to wait
a bit longer.
Be wary of activities which offer instant
2014 Tourism Magazine| page 24
returns. They say unless a kernel of seed
falls to the ground and dies it abides
alone, but if it falls to the ground it
brings forth a harvest. A seed always
bring much more than the amount you
plant. Therefore seed time and harvest
speaks of increase which leads to compounding. Audit your harvest for the
last five years and determine if increase
is happening.
It seems life really is a consecutive series
of interlinked activities of planting,
nurturing and harvesting. Every day we
do go out and scatter seed. It is inevitable that some seed will fall on rocky
ground, some will fall on hard ground
and some, as the bible says, on thorny
ground. You do not, however, stop
scattering seed because of a few bad
experiences.
Farming is a faith-based activity. Even in
these years of climate change a farmer keeps putting seed to the ground
hoping sufficient rain will come and the
weather will be fine to sustain a crop.
The majority of seeds always falls on
good ground to give a bountiful harvest. Part of good farming is identifying
that suitable ground.
If all you see is unsuitable ground, you
can also make it suitable by preparation. Break the soil down if it is hard.
Add some lime if it is acidic. Add some
nutrients if it has poor soil.
The seed that we all get an equivalent
amount of is time. We are all blessed
with a deposit of 24 hours each day. It is
important that we redeem the time and
apply it to fruitful activity.
For those of us in formal employment
we sell our time for a fixed wage which
we agree before hand with an employer. The eight hours that is purchased by
the company is used to generate seed
for the employer. The salary you are
paid becomes your proxy seed.
You have the liberty to deploy your
seed to produce your own harvest.
Plant it on good ground for your twilight years and the next generation.
Originally, I restricted the application
of seed time and harvest to financial
matters but like the law of gravity, it is
an unchanging principle which applies
to various aspects of life. As I put it to
use in other life activities, I see the fruit
it produces.
Historically, I have not had very good
experiences with South African police.
Each time they stopped me, I would
immediately wear a frown as I always
thought they were after trying to hustle
money out of me. It did not particularly
help with the perception that local police treat foreigners as automated teller
machines.
This year, whenever they stop me I put
aside my cocky Zimbabwean demur
and I proactively wind down my window, smile and say something like good
day officer, what a beautiful day?
I have now realised that there is nothing
which disarms like a seed smile. So I
deliberately plant it wherever I can and
the results have been astounding. In
a majority of cases, we just exchange
a few pleasantries and before long, I
say ‘ke a leboga’ (which is thank you in
Setswana/Sepedi/Sesotho) and I am on
my way.
If you do not like your harvest, review
your seed. If you find the world is an
angry place, check whether you are not
planting anger yourself. It is tremendously powerful to realise that only you
can determine the size and quality of
your harvest.
Go forth therefore and select fine seed
and put it on good ground. Planting
seed ought to be a celebration steeped
in hope that tomorrow will indeed be
better.

GACHE GACHE
ANTI-POACHING UNIT
Also known as WEPU (Wildlife Environment Protection Unit)...
I
N 2010, Ray Townsend of Chapungu
Safaris was approached by members
of the local licensed Nyaminyami
fishing community, and asked to help
them with the problem of serious fish
poaching in the Gache Gache River by
illegal fishermen. Together with these
few volunteers from the surrounding
local Community they have tackled
the problems, and after 3 years of hard
work, dangerous encounters and finally
a feeling of satisfaction, it is proving to
be a HUGE success.
The Fishing has improved amazingly &
the wildlife is now back in our Gache
Gache Wilderness area too, as anti-poaching snare patrols and regular
ambushes etc. are implemented on
a daily basis. It has not been done
without their share of danger, drama
and narrow escapes either! These guys
put their life on the line so that we and
our children's children can enjoy fishing
2014 Tourism Magazine| page 26
and watching big game as well as plains
game, in our wonderful country. It's not
only about the Rhino...
History: The area around the Gache
Gache Lodge has been teaming with
illegal poachers & fishermen for many
many years, who have been netting
tonnes and tonnes of fish using nylon
netting and destroying the natural
breeding sanctuary for fish in the river’s
eco-system. Illegal catches of 10 tonnes
& more a day were no exaggeration!!
When boats are found hidden (poachers sink the boats during the day and
sneak back into the area at night and
retrieve them to go out on the water
again), they are confiscated, the nets
are gathered up and burnt. Some
nets are 2km long! They do extensive
damage to the environment as well
as to birds and other creatures in the
wild if left there. In the wilderness area,
many animals were found still in snares,
as there were so many laid out that the
poachers could not gather up later, all
that they had snared. A young elephant
had his trunk severed by a snare and he
relies on other elephants to help him
feed, and survive.
Poachers also cut down trees, raid bee
hives and do other damage to the environment. By practicing anti-poaching, it
curbs all this other illegal activity too.
To date, Chapungu Safaris together
with supportive donors have helped
WEPU with uniforms, boats & motors,
fuel & vehicles to transport them
around the area & take poachers to the
Magunje or Kariba Police Stations &
later to attend court. Trainers have volunteered their time and come in to give
advice and field training to our Scouts,
www.megafestholdings.co.zw
as well as 1st Aid basic training in case
of an emergency. We are extremely
grateful to these individuals who care
enough to take the time to do this.
National Parks Scouts, Nyaminyami RDC
Police, Chapungu Safaris staff & the
surrounding Community are all working
together, despite their limited resources, to Conserve, Protect & Rehabilitate

this beautiful area, & it is paying off! But
it is an ongoing project and needs continuous support. Every little bit helps.
Sponsor a Scout today, or help by
donating some cash that will go a long
way towards protecting the amazing,
gem of a spot in Zimbabwe. We also
have a 'wish list' that you can request
to see if you can possible help with that
instead... thank you in anticipation!
