With just a few short weeks remaining of the school year, classes are incredibly busy
finalising teaching episodes, completing assessment, formulating reports, preparing older
students for camps...the list continues. These final weeks are filled with many opportunities
for parents and students to enjoy and celebrate the learning which has taken place
throughout the year.
Junior School Parent Support Group
The AGM was held on Monday 10 November and the executive positions for 2015 are as
follows:
Mr Tony Brown
Mr Andrew Roberts
Mrs Sandra Beckett
Mrs Margaret Cook
- President
- Vice-President
- Treasurer
- Secretary
The outgoing Executive is to be commended on a stirling year in which the primary goals
of creating social opportunities for families to gather, and also providing fundraising
opportunities through which funds can be used for required resources, have been clearly
achieved. I would like to thank those members of the executive Andrew Roberts (President),
Andrew Shegog (Vice-President), Sandra Beckett (Secretary) and Jo Jackson (Treasurer)
for their tireless and dedicated work to the Junior School.
Over the course of the last year, the Junior School Parent Support Group has provided the
Junior School with many much-needed resources, including:
• $5,000 to go towards further Junior Library resources. Much of this expenditure will be
driven by student feedback and recommendations.
• 8 IPads (and associated protective cases and charging docks) for use in P-2 classes.
These will provide great flexibility in the integration of ICT into the classroom teaching
pedagogy. Students in Prep have already been exposed to some of this technology by
working with a donated device.
• Swivl and video camera - This device will enable teachers to easily review their practices
as well as recording student presentations as the Swivl tracks the speaker throughout
the room and bluetooth transmits the sound to the camera for recording rather than
relying on the in-built microphone from a distance.
• 8 walkie talkies which have replaced the aging set previously purchased many years
ago. These are of great benefit on a daily basis at the Pick-up Zone in order to establish
and maintain flow of traffic and efficient gathering of students. These also have already
been used at the GPS Athletics Carnival.
• Shade tents - These were desperately needed by our cricket teams to assist in providing
shade from the hot sun over the course of the day. The tents have been used at many
events throughout the year and are ready to enter cricket season again.
• Sponsorship of the 150 Anthology. The Support Group funds ensured the ability to
cover the costs of printing so that the project was able to be brought to reality. (Don't
forget to purchase your copy!!)
The Junior School Parent Support Group is very keen to attract new members. New people
are always welcome at meetings – which are fun, short and productive. However, parents
who are unable to participate in this manner can help with any of the activities throughout
the year. The Support Group is behind many of the events in the year and has a presence
at our interhouse carnivals, pool parties etc. All efforts are to help the school and to raise
funds for new resources for our boys. It is a great way to become involved in the school
- Excellence - Leadership - Integrity - Community -
community and make new friends. (Feel free to investigate the possibilities by chatting with a member of the team at the
upcoming Orientation Pool Parties on 24 January.)
The Term 4 Christmas Card fundraiser raised $161.20. Thank you so much to everyone who supported this fundraiser.
Tuckshop
The menu for next year has undergone some amendments. From 2015, only items rated 'green' and 'amber' will be permitted on
the menu, except for a few small treats. Teachers will monitor students' tuckshop choices and address should 'amber' and 'red'
snacks be purchased regularly rather than an occasional treat. It is also likely that the tuckshop will again re-open after school
for students remaining behind for training and other activities.
Mrs Sweeney has requested that all outstanding monies owed please be settled by the end of next week. (These bills are
accrued with parental permission if a student forgets their lunch etc.) Thank you in anticipation of your cooperation in this matter.
Rehearsals for Junior School Speech Night
This year, due to the limited availability of the Auditorium in the final three weeks of the term, many of our venue rehearsals
have been scheduled for early this week and late in the final week of school. However, other ensemble rehearsals will continue
during regular practice times and school time. The only exceptions are the final after school rehearsals and sound checks for the
following groups:
•
•
Dance Troupe - Thursday 27 November (4.30-5.00pm) with Mrs Gallagher and Mrs Dixon
Junior Choir - Thursday 27 November (4.45-5.30pm) with Mrs Tank
These students are asked to arrive early to attend these rehearsals, having eaten an early dinner and with their uniforms ready
for the evening event.
Speech Night Notes for all students
Q:
A:
When should I get there?
All students from all classes who are not required for early rehearsals areexpected to be present in the Auditorium and checked in with their class teacher by 6.15pm. Audience members will be invited to enter the Auditorium and commence
taking seats from 6.00pm. The evening commences at 6.30pm sharp.
Q:
A:
Where can I park?
Parking will be available on the oval. Entry via internal roadway which is accessible from Darling Street.
Q:
A:
What should my son wear?
Please note that all students are expected to attend in full uniform, including blazers (minus hat).
Q:
A:
Can my son leave early?
The evening is timed to conclude at approximately 8.15pm. Parents of students in P-1 will be invited to collect their
son from a specified collection point midway through the evening. Parents collecting P-1 students will be asked to move
quietly so the evening may continue without significant disruption. Should parents wish to collect their son and return for
the final formalities, seating will be available towards the front of the Auditorium having just been vacated by the
P-1 students. Please enter respectfully and silently.
Q:
A:
Two years ago, I got very tired of clapping during the presentation of students. Will this be the same this year?
We will ask audience members to wait until all students in the year group have been presented before applauding. In this
way, all students will receive their special moment in the spotlight and we can maintain the dignity of the occasion without
excessive clapping demands on the audience.

RE: AFL programme
On behalf of the Ipswich Eagles AFC I would like to invite the children of your school to come down and learn to participate
in AFL with the Ipswich Eagles located in Limestone Park.
We have recruited an ex AFL player to head up our coaching division and he has also designed all age group’s coaching so
they get the very best opportunity to learn AFL as a junior.
Our age groups for the 2015 season are:
Under 6’s, Under 8’s, Under 10’s, Under 11’s , Under 12’s, Under 13’s, Under 14’s, Under 16’s, Under 17’s and Under 19’s.
If this is something that might interest your school, please feel free to contact myself on 0406 532 768 or Chris Devlin on
0422 687 669.
Once again I thank you for opportunity to get the children of the school involved in a quality run AFL programme at all age
groups.
Yours Sincerely,
Andrew Thompson - President

The Christmas Kindness project is a
collaboration of one of my favourite books
"The Giving Tree", the power of positive
thoughts and words, and an Under 8’s activity
where kids were invited to write a wish for the
world on large gift tags and hang them from a
beautiful Moreton Bay Fig tree.
Christmas Kindness Project
I am inviting students and teachers to purchase
a coloured paper disc for 50c and write a
kind wish for others on it. The disc will then
represent a Christmas bauble and be placed
on the wall to eventually create a colourful
Christmas Tree of Kindness. All money
raised will be given to a children's charity for
Christmas with our best wishes.
“Baubles” can be purchased at lunch on
Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the
entrance to the corridor near my office.

I.G.S. JUNIOR SCHOOL
COMPULSORY ENSEMBLES PROGRAM
2015 YEAR 5 AND 6 STUDENTS
Dear Parents,
2014 has been a most successful year in terms of both growth and quality of instrumental music education in
the Junior School. Our ensemble performances throughout the year have been outstanding.
We are happy to announce the enrolment procedures and options for concert bands and other classroom
music activities in 2015 to ensure continued success.
Current 2014 Year 5 Band – the aim of the Compulsory Ensemble Program is to teach the foundation skills
necessary to playing the students’ chosen instruments and then continue learning through to the end of the
following year. In 2015, it is strongly recommended that students continue to learn their allocated
instrument, as 1 of the 2 weekly classroom music classes is a rehearsal for band and strings. A small fee per
term fee will apply for students wishing to continue on their existing instrument. Parents may wish to opt for a
private lesson, at a discounted rate, to take the place of their small group lesson. Students choosing not to
continue with their instrumental studies will participate in other classroom activities, of which there is no fee.
New Year 5 Students in 2015 – These students will be tested for suitability and placed on an instrument as
part of the Compulsory Ensemble Program for 2015. It is strongly recommended that students continue with
this allocated instrument until the end of Year 6.
New Year 6 Students in 2015 - As Year 6 Music also includes compulsory ensemble classes, new Year 6
students to IGS in 2015 will need to make a selection for ensemble tuition. Students can either nominate a
band instrument that they started learning at their other school, or nominate to join the beginner guitar group
(of which there is a small fee per term fee) or opt to participate in the other classroom music activities, of
which there is no fee.
Please read through the information above carefully and discuss with your son the options available to them in
2015. Once you have discussed the options, please complete the details on the opposite page, and return it to
school as soon as possible.
We look forward to working with your son in 2015.
Regards
Ian Feltham

Anthology
Anthology is a collection of poems written by the boys in the
Junior School in Ipswich Grammar School’s 150th Year. As
part of our 150th Anniversary celebrations, the young ’Men
of Grammar’ were each invited to contribute a poem to this
Anthology. Working alongside their inspiring teachers, the
boys wrote the following collection of poems for us all to enjoy.
We are taken on a journey from sea creatures to snowboards,
the cinquain to haiku and volcanoes to dragons. Through this
Anthology, the boys of the Junior School have offered a youthful
glimpse of their imagination, creativity and memories.
“Pan, who and what art thou?” he cried huskily.
“I’m youth, I’m joy,” Peter answered at a venture,
“I’m a little bird that has broken out of the egg.”
