Welcome to De Montfort University’s open day. We’re
delighted to have the chance to show you first-hand
the amazing opportunities DMU offers.
I’m honoured you have chosen to visit us, as I know
just how important this time is for you all, as you
decide where to study next – a decision that will
shape the rest of your life.
DMU is a vibrant, exciting place to live and learn in.
We pride ourselves on giving our students the best
possible university experience and equip them with
the vital real-world skills and attitudes they need to
get the jobs they want.
We are one of the top 50 universities in the country
when it comes to graduates finding jobs, according to
the latest Sunday Times league tables. We’re also the
most improved university in the UK, and this year’s
Complete University Guide put us in the UK’s top 40

We want students to take advantage of every
opportunity while they are at DMU. We have more
than 100 sporting and student societies, an £8m
leisure centre and partnerships with all of Leicester’s
major sports teams.
We also encourage all students to volunteer with
our DMU Square Mile project, which this year won
a Guardian University award for its outstanding
contribution to the local community.
As you tour the campus and see our superb facilities
for yourselves, please talk to our lecturers and chat
with students. They can answer any questions you
might have to help you really get a feel for life at DMU.
It is an especially exciting time to join DMU as we are
investing £136 million in transforming our city centre
campus. New buildings, green spaces and cuttingedge teaching facilities will make it one of the best in
the country.
DMU has a deserved reputation for academic
excellence and inspiring teaching and our emphasis
on employability is strengthened by partnerships with
some of the world’s biggest companies. They offer
our students the invaluable work experience and
networking opportunities that lead to jobs.
There is a lot to take in, so please get in touch if you
have any questions or comments. You can find me
on Twitter @dmuvc.
DMU is one of the most creative universities
in the country and we are delighted that No.10
Downing Street selected us to be part of the
British Government’s GREAT Festival of Creativity,
promoting Britain around the globe. DMU
represents UK education, linking our creativity
to commerce alongside global brands including
HSBC, BBC Worldwide, Jaguar Land Rover and
PricewaterhouseCoopers.
Best wishes,
We have also launched the sector-leading
#DMUglobal programme, offering the majority of
students a meaningful international experience
during their studies. Recent returnees enjoyed
amazing experiences in Brazil, China and Gambia
and we’ve committed £2m to ensure that 11,000
of our students have an international experience
over the next five years. DMU students will gain
an international perspective invaluable in a fiercely
competitive graduate marketplace.
Professor Dominic Shellard
Vice-Chancellor
Enjoy your day. We look forward to welcoming you
back to DMU soon.

The large white building, just behind the Greenhouse is the Performance Arts Centre for Excellence (PACE)
Building. Opened in October 2007, it is part of the only Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning for the
Performing Arts of Dance, Drama and Music Technology. It provides a superb range of studios and rehearsal spaces.

lights onto Mill Lane and carry on up the left hand side of the road to point 9.
To the left of the Hugh Aston Building is the campus gateway, Magazine Square, which unites the campus with
Leicester’s historic Magazine Gateway building. The 14th century monument is now a key feature, reflecting
DMU’s commitment to enhance and preserve its urban environment.
The Greenhouse provides 200 seats for group and individual study, with the most up-to-date IT facilities. The space
is light and airy and truly green, with LED lighting which reacts to changes in natural daylight to save energy.

Just behind Edith Murphy, Heritage House is part of the Faculty of Art, Design and Humanities, providing fantastic
facilities for students studying Contour Fashion, Fashion Buying, Fashion Design, and Footwear Design.

THIS IS A DISABILITY
FRIENDLY UNIVERSITY
DISABILITY ADVICE AND SUPPORT
DMU has more disabled students than almost
any other university in the UK. We want to recruit
students on the basis of their academic ability,
and recognise that this requires us to ensure
our disabled students are welcomed as equal
participants in every aspect of university life.
Our inclusive philosophy is exemplified by our
award-winning Disability Advice and Support
service. Many aspects of their work, in areas
such as dyslexia, autistic spectrum disorders and
diabetes we believe are sector-leading.
MENTAL HEALTH INCLUSION TEAM
Our Mental Health Inclusion team are here to
assist students with the practical impact of
mental health conditions in a university
environment. The team are able to assess
students’ needs and offer the appropriate
intervention. This may include practical advice
on how to manage mental health difficulties,
short-term interventions or recommendations for
ongoing adjustments. Central to our vision is the
aim to promote individual resilience and improve
employment prospects.
DISABLED STUDENTS’ ALLOWANCES
Funding is available for some students with
disabilities, long-term health conditions, mental
health conditions (such as depression or
schizophrenia) and specific learning differences,
such as dyslexia, to cover extra costs associated
with studying, including specialist equipment and
academic personal support.
You may wish to speak to a member of the
Disability Advice and Support Service or the
Mental Health Inclusion team, who would also be
able to offer support in applying.
