You will also find the Muslim prayer room located on the lower ground floor/basement. The entrance to the prayer room is at the back of the Portland Building, i.e. from Newarke Close through the car park. Visitors are invited to view the prayer room during the Open Day. Please see page 48 for visit details. Standing at the front of the Portland Building, directly in front of you on the opposite side of the road, you will see the Hawthorn Building, home to Health and Life Sciences. This building houses purpose-built facilities for our Game Art and Animation Design courses based within the Leicester Media School in the Faculty of Technology. Facilities include a Studio Animation lab, a Game Art lab, Digital Art studios, a Life Drawing studio, a Modelling workshop, multi-purpose seminar rooms and teaching labs. 05 Cross over Mill Lane and walk down The Gateway. Stop at the corner of The Gateway and Richmond Street (the first road on your right). Here you will find point 2 on the tour, The Greenhouse. The large white building, just behind the Greenhouse is the Performance Arts Centre for Excellence (PACE) Building. Opened in October 2007, it is part of the only Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning for the Performing Arts of Dance, Drama and Music Technology. It provides a superb range of studios and rehearsal spaces. 3 Continue walking along Western Boulevard to the main traffic lights opposite Tesco Express. Turn left at the traffic lights onto Mill Lane and carry on up the left hand side of the road to point 9. To the left of the Hugh Aston Building is the campus gateway, Magazine Square, which unites the campus with Leicester’s historic Magazine Gateway building. The 14th century monument is now a key feature, reflecting DMU’s commitment to enhance and preserve its urban environment. The Greenhouse provides 200 seats for group and individual study, with the most up-to-date IT facilities. The space is light and airy and truly green, with LED lighting which reacts to changes in natural daylight to save energy. BEDE ISLAND Turn left along The Gateway, with the Hawthorn Building on your right, and at the end of the road turn right on to The Newarke. Head up The Newarke to point 5 and you will see the Hugh Aston Building at the top of the road on the right and Edith Murphy House on your left. Behind the Campus Centre is Gateway House, home to the Student Gateway centre and Technology facilities, including their Virtual Reality Suite, and the Art, Design and Humanities’ Textile Design course. Opposite Gateway House is the Confucius Institute, a vibrant celebration of Chinese language and culture, which opened in 2013. THE GREENHOUSE 33 08 EDITH MURPHY HOUSE 8 This newly refurbished building is also home to Health and Life Sciences. The building is named after local businesswoman and philanthropist Edith Murphy whose charity, the Edith Murphy Foundation, donated funds close to £1 million to DMU to support medical research. Just behind Edith Murphy, Heritage House is part of the Faculty of Art, Design and Humanities, providing fantastic facilities for students studying Contour Fashion, Fashion Buying, Fashion Design, and Footwear Design. Walk back down The Newarke, past the 14th century Trinity House on your right. On your left is the historic Chantry Building, home to the Square Mile Project, and the John Whitehead Building, which houses our Academic Registry team. Walk to the end of The Newarke and turn right onto Western Boulevard. Walk to the top of the road to point 7. 07 THE QUEEN ELIZABETH II DIAMOND JUBILEE LEISURE CENTRE 3 4 Our new leisure centre, The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Leisure Centre was officially opened by His Royal Highness the Earl of Wessex in June 2013. The leisure centre includes a 25-metre six lane swimming pool, eight courts, a gym, multi-purpose studios, a climbing wall and a café. Now walk back down Western Boulevard, passing The Newarke. Walk along Western Boulevard where you will see point 8, Bede Island, on the opposite side of the road. 3 FLETCHER BUILDING 1 Over the next few years we are continuing our investment in the DMU campus to provide the modern, inspiring environment our students deserve. The centre-piece of this project is an impressive new base for the Faculty of Art, Design and Humanities and a new Fletcher Building ready for students to move into in early 2016. Now cross the road to point 10. 10 0 QUEENS BUILDING 3 The Queens Building houses teaching, laboratory and research facilities for Technology students. To the left of the Queens Building, you will see the entrance of the Kimberlin Library. DMU’s library services are always rated highly in the National Student Survey. It offers extended opening hours which means that you can study when it suits you. The library gives students access to more than half a million publications and a wide range of DVDs, e-resources and electronic journals. Next to Kimberlin Library is the Eric Wood Learning Zone which provides 180 modern study spaces for group and individual working. Both spaces are open to look around and library staff will be happy to give you a personal tour and to answer questions about our support provision. Continue walking up Mill Lane/Bonners Lane to point 11. 11 5 MILL STUDIOS AND ART FACTORY 2 and 1 Mill Studios provides the Faculty of Art, Design and Humanities specific workshop and study spaces for Art and Design (Foundation Studies) and Fine Art. Next to this is the Art Factory which has been purposely designed to allow students to create, study and exhibit their work. Behind the Art Factory is the Clephan Building. This former textile factory provides facilities for students in the Humanities and Media subject area. This completes your DMU self-guided campus tour.
