“Play Heat’s Up During Singles Club
Championship”
The singles club championships that began Saturday, September 22nd proved to be a test of tennis skill and a test of physical
and mental endurance. With the on-court temperature exceeding 90
degrees players were challenged by the hot sun as well as the scorching winners from their opponent’s racquets.
A total of 84 players took to the courts to compete for the
right to named club champion in both the women’s and men’s singles draws. Over 100 matches were scheduled over the weekend
with many participants enduring two matches in one day under the
hot sun. Those that survived the weekend were treated to a primetime final and cooler temperatures on center court the following
week.

What a fun two weekends we had August 30September 9th at the Newport Beach Tennis Club as numerous members competed in the prestigious 10th Annual Queen
of Hearts Charity Tournament and the 10k Tony Prodan Memorial 35 doubles event! The event featured over 350 players, the Ultra fun Tux and Tennies Party, extensive silent auction and ball drop as proceeds will benefit an early detection
for Ovarian Cancer.
In a grueling match, NBTC’s Dave Watson won the
5.0 Singles Title in thrilling fashion, defeating Juan Anaque
10-8 in the third. Watson combined his superior athleticism
with a strong will to win to capture the title early Sunday
morning. In the 4.0 Mixed, Tuyet Forrest won with Elvis
Ochoa beating the team of Mak and Loha 6-1, 5-7, 7-5. These
two members should be congratulated for their effort. Watson had to get through 3 players to win the title, while Forrest
and Ochoa beat 4 teams in route to their victory. A wonderful accomplishments in one of the largest charity tennis
events in California!
In the Tony Prodan Memorial event, NBTC’s very
own Scott Davis, along with Devin Bowen won the $10,000
title, each grabbing $2000 a piece for their effort. The event
is a tribute to Linda Winstons father, Tony Prodan, and featured an incredible array of skill and talent across the board,
but especially from Davis as he took control of the final
match with a dazzling array of shots at the net. Davis/Bowen
defeated Man Son Hing/Cook 6-3, 6-4 in front of a very pro
Davis crowd here at NBTC
Thanks to all members for playing and we hope to
see ALL of you in our upcoming Calcutta Oct 13-14, Grand
Prix Leagues play starting early October, Newport Beach
Tennis Club Grand Prix (Oct 27-28) and all our other fun
events we have lined up for you this fall!
Scott Davis (right) and Devin Bowen win the crown

GOOD LUCK
TO ALL
PLAYERS!
Your Split Step IS your first step! Many adults and
juniors underestimate the value of the split step, but it
proves vital if wanting to get a good jump on the ball. The
reason for the importance of the split step is that it gives
balance and the ability to BETTER push off to the
ball. One should split step (heals off the ground) right as
the opponent hits the ball. A good wide split step will provide balance and a greater ability to push off with the outside leg. Even on serves it is crucial to split step right as
the server hits the ball. Just watch any of the top pros as
they are all anticipating, getting their body moving with a
split step. You'll be amazed how much quicker to the ball
you will become by using this valuable tool properly. So,
next time you are on the court, focus on the split step, and
enjoy better coverage, better anticipation and hence, better
results!
