Edition 16/2014: 11 Nov 2014 AVILA NEWS Avila College acknowledges the Wurundjeri people, the traditional custodians of the land on which the College is built. FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear members of the Avila community, On Friday 31 October the staff gathered in the staff room for a very memorable gourmet lunch that was hosted by the Avila College Parents and Friends Association. This was the first time that such a lunch, organized and prepared by the PFA, was held in acknowledgement of World Teachers’ Day. I would like to particularly thank Helene Diamantopoulos who was the champion for this event –co-ordinated with grace and flair. On behalf of all the Avila College staff I would like to thank all the parents who contributed in some way to making this event such a memorable and positive step in bringing the parent and staff community closer together. This building of community ultimately benefits your daughters in so many ways. Last Thursday we gathered as a College community to commission our new College Student Leaders for 2015. It was an opportunity to acknowledge and congratulate them on their appointment to these significant leadership positions at the College. It was made even more memorable for them with many of their parents attending the assembly then joining with staff and students for a shared morning tea afterwards. At this assembly we also acknowledged a large number of students who had received various awards and bursaries for their outstanding efforts in various state and national competitions throughout the year. Some of these competitions included; • Language Perfect World Championships • National Computer Science School (NCSS) Challenge • Science Talent Quest • National Mathematics Competition. Compliments are extended to all students from Years 7-10 involved in the Year 10 Drama Festival held this year over three performances and in a new venue – the small lecture theatre. The theme this year was On the Road and it was up to each group how they translated this concept. The five plays were most capably directed by students from the Year 10 Drama class, under the guidance of their Drama teacher, Darcie Kane-Priestley. Congratulations to all Vadi nominees and especially to Lauren Gabriele who was this year’s Vadi award winner. Community news: I am pleased to announce the following appointments for 2015: Year Level Co-ordinators: Year 12 – Mrs Anna Marvelli Year 11 – Mrs Anne Stephens PRAYER God of love and liberty, We bring our thanks today for the peace and security we enjoy, We remember those who in time of war faithfully serve their country. We pray for their families, and for ourselves whose freedom was won at such a cost. Make us a people zealous for peace, and hasten that day when nation shall not lift up sword against nation neither learn war any more. This we pray in the name of the one who gave his life for the sake of the world: Jesus Christ, our Redeemer. Amen. Louise Gunther Principal Ecclesiae Filia – Daughter of the Church 1 Edition 16/2014: 11 Nov 2014 AVILA NEWS FROM THE CHAIR During our final reporting meeting for the year, the Avila College Board shared in the joyful and youthful reflection of four Year 10 Avila students reporting on their experience as College representatives attending the Presentation Schools Conference in Queensland during September. This was also an opportunity for deepening Avila College Board Members’ connection to the charism of the Presentation Sisters, the College Founders. As previously reported, the Avila College Board is currently working to build its capacity to govern. Review and development of key documents is therefore a priority. The review of the College Board Constitution has begun, with a ‘working party’ established for this specific purpose. During 2015, the College Board will be informed regularly as the ‘working party’ closely examines and proposes a refinement of this key Board document. Developing an effective and purposeful Induction Process for newly appointed Board Members is understood to be another step forward. “In essence, a thorough, well-considered induction process is an investment to ensure the quality of school governing is evident and that the school board performs effectively” (Governing Guide, July 2014). A draft document ‘Induction Process for new Board Members’ is being considered by Board Members. Providing ongoing formation opportunities for Board Members is also currently a high priority of the Avila College Board. Director of Faith and Mission, Mr John Rhynehart, prepared an executive brief for the Board on the document from the Congregation for Catholic Education “Education Today and Tomorrow: A Renewing Passion” (Zenon Cardinal Grocholewski, Prefect Vatican City, 7 April 2014). Board Members were invited to consider the following discussion question, “In the light of Church teachings and considering the needs and challenges of contemporary society what should Catholic schools be like?” Board Members then participated in fruitful discussion within small groups, with the main ideas raised presented to the entire meeting. During 2014, Avila College community members have been invited to share in the life of the College in many diverse ways. As a College Board, we are so grateful to all the Avila Staff (teaching and administrative) for providing these wonderful opportunities for us to participate as students, parents, and staff and community members. During the last couple of years the PFA has also worked diligently and with great enthusiasm to create even more opportunities for gathering as a community. The Avila College Board is grateful for the PFA’s dedication and commitment to ‘building important community relationships through the events and activities they host. As we approach Avila College’s Golden Jubilee in 2015, I encourage all community members to listen for and respond enthusiastically to, invitations to celebrate this wonderful community we belong to. Sally-Anne Petrie Chairperson, Avila College Board PARENTS AND FRIENDS REPORT World Teachers’ Day Lunch The PFA hosted a luncheon for the wonderful staff at Avila College on Friday 31 October, which was World Teachers’ Day. Helene Diamantopoulos was the coordinator of the event and my thanks go to her for doing an absolutely wonderful job. Catering lunch for over 100 people is quite a task but Helene and her team of helpers made it look easy. There was a fantastic range of hot and cold food followed by some delicious sweet treats. Avila parents were extremely generous, not just with their time, but with the dishes they provided. It really is great to see so many parents getting involved. Feedback from the staff was very positive and they extended their thanks to the PFA and all involved. As we move towards the end of the year I know all Avila students are in our thoughts as they sit their final exams, especially the VCE girls, we wish them the very best and thank their teachers for their kind care and support throughout the year. IGA Community Benefits Scheme Next time you are shopping at IGA/Richies Mount Waverley, be sure to use your Community Benefits Card. IGA donate a portion of sales back to community groups which can be significant over time. If you already have a card make sure you have nominated Avila College as the community group or if you don’t already have one it only takes a moment to set up, just ask at the check-out. Thanks for your support. Loretta Stapleton PFA President Ecclesiae Filia – Daughter of the Church 2 Edition 16/2014: 11 Nov 2014 AVILA NEWS LEARNING AND TEACHING NEWS Exams Year 9 students undertook their exams in English, Maths and Science on Monday (10 November) and the Years 10 and 11 students commenced their exams today (11 November). Year 12 exams conclude at Avila on Wednesday 19 November. Year Level Co-ordinators, Curriculum Leaders and teachers have advised students about how to prepare for their exams and of the specific materials that are permitted in the different subjects’ exams. All students were given details of examination regulations regarding dictionaries, calculators, electronic devices, mobiles phones, pencil cases and drink bottles. See page 12 of the newsletter for Year 10 and 11 Exam Timetable. HeadStart All students currently in Years 10 and 11 will undertake the HeadStart program from Friday 21 November to Friday 28 November. Year 9 students undertaking a VCE subject in Semester One should attend the HeadStart lessons for that subject unless they have a formal assessment occurring in their Year 9 class at the same time. Where such a clash occurs, the assessment of the Year 9 subject will be the higher priority. During HeadStart students undertake three lessons in each of their semester one subjects throughout the program. Homework will be set to assist students to commence the new year with confidence and knowledge regarding the type of learning that occurs in each subject. In many cases, the homework is designed to prepare students for school assessed coursework (SAC) tasks that occur very early in the course. Any student who knows that she will be absent from any of the HeadStart program must see her current year level co-ordinator. Students are advised that absence may put their VCE studies at a disadvantage. Absentees are required to catch up on the work missed in addition to completing all holiday homework. Booklists Booklists have been issued to all students along with confirmation of their electives for 2015. Booklists need to be submitted online to Campion by Thursday 4 December. Students currently in Years 9, 10 or 11 who submitted booklists by 29 October are reminded that Campion will be distributing them from the Dining Room on Tuesday 18 November between 12.30pm and 4.30pm. Online Second-Hand Book Sale The online second-hand booklist can now be accessed from Simon. To list books for sale or to arrange to purchase second-hand books, students need to use their normal Avila login and password. Please note, that most digital resources and packs that include a student workbook have not been listed as suitable for re-sale due to licensing restrictions. Students who make private arrangements to purchase such items do so at the risk of not having access to the full range of resources that will be required to undertake study in some subjects in 2015. We could take the theme, “On The Road,” anywhere. Well, anywhere that fitted into a suitcase… Such a broad theme required a deeper look into the endless opportunities and avenues to walk down. We looked at songs, plays, poetry, art works, novels and movies in a search for inspiration. Over the course of the preparation time, we learnt how to produce a professional production. From script writing, holding auditions, planning rehearsals, costume design, working up in the light box and even looking into promotion of ticket sales (which sold out for every show!), we looked at it all. We created five very unique plays. It is a real attestation to my beautiful classmates who have worked relentlessly to create original ideas and showcase the talents of not only their cast, but also themselves. Three months ago we could not possibly have dreamt of what we have achieved. We all have to acknowledge that the guidance of Miss Kane-Priestley has been invaluable through this journey. Her knowledge and experience has been something that we could not have done without and this show is truly a testament to the commitment and hours of work she has dedicated to this; our production. This process has continued to grow my understanding of the importance of developing our creativity and the impact of being involved in a subject like Drama. I could not have dreamt of a better group of directors to work with, a teacher more dedicated and a cast more brilliant. What a road to travel and what an amazing three sell-out shows. At the award ceremony it was announced that Sophia had been nominated for the State Champion Award - a great achievement. Sophia, although not the ultimate winner, is to be congratulated on an outstanding season of debating. At the award ceremony she met and heard the author, multicultural consultant and curator, Tasmeen Chopra, who spoke about educating communities and respecting our diverse and multicultural peoples in order to bring positive change. Photo: Sophia Elliott with Tasmeen Chopra BRITISH PARLIAMENTARY DEBATING British Parliamentary Debating is the favourite form of debating for those who have a passion for argument. Modeled on the British Parliamentary debates, the students hold onto their wigs (pretend ones) as they interject during their opposition’s speeches - while acting as Prime Minister, Leader of the Opposition or the House Whip. Across the course of a day the students argue three topics with only 30 minutes preparation time for each; and they compete against the best debaters in their age group in the metropolitan area. Congratulations to the students who competed in the Junior British Parliamentary Competition last weekend and won some of the debates. All of the students learnt a great deal about debating method and manner. Congratulations to Tamara Ryan and Georgia Pitt; Dion Andrikopoulos and Javira Altmann; and Emma Spencer and Alysha Wanigaratne. Christine Valladares Public Speaking and Debating Co-ordinator VISITING ARTIST - DOMINIC SOWERSBY Dominic visited the Year 9 Studio Arts class recently to discuss his art and to share his experiences working as a professional artist. He has just had an exhibition of his watercolour drawings depicting mechanical and organic forms (the same topic explored by our students!). Dominic was impressed with the girls’ artwork just as they were with his. Dominic is a past student of Salesian College, Chadstone, and his three sisters attended Avila. His visit was certainly inspiring as seen in the artwork that has since been produced and exhibited at the annual Art Show. Ann-Maree Wise Art Teacher Ecclesiae Filia – Daughter of the Church 5 Edition 16/2014: 11 Nov 2014 AVILA NEWS CHRISTMAS BOXES Each year a group of 3 staff and 10 Year 10 students travel on an Immersion experience to the remote Aboriginal community of Santa Teresa. The group of Avila girls that travel each year are privileged enough to develop strong relationships of friendship and respect with members of the community during their time spent there. This year, the 2014 group organised Christmas presents for the elderly whom they met through their time at the Community Care Centre. Past student and staff travellers and also the girls that went this year, all worked together to purchase 27 care packages. Also, students in Year 11, under the guidance of Ms Jolenta Kirkwood (past staff traveller on the Santa Teresa Immersion) were inspired to give at this time of year and have put together gifts for the students in the Prep/1 class. These will be freighted up to Alice Springs thanks to the support of the whole Avila College community, through fundraising efforts at the oral report cake stalls held during the year. YEAR 11 Over the past few weeks, our homeroom has been creating Christmas boxes to send to young children who are less fortunate than we are here at Avila. During the Living and Values program we have been discussing the role of compassion in our lives and we were looking to act on our desire to improve the lives of others. We formed small groups, pooled our money together and bought presents to put in the boxes for boys and girls. To begin with, we were going to send the presents to a third world country but then we realised there are people in our own backyard who are in need. At Avila we have a strong relationship with the Santa Teresa community in the Northern Territory so we decided to send our Christmas boxes there. I was one of the lucky students to travel on the Immersion to Santa Teresa in 2013, and they are the happiest and most appreciative kids I have ever had the pleasure to spend time with and I know they would be incredibly happy to receive these gifts. I believe it’s a good thing to actually know where our gifts are being sent and this way we were able to make it more personalised. It feels very rewarding to be able to do something good for someone else over the Christmas period. This way we are able to make someone else’s day a little brighter even though the gesture may be small. Jade Casemore 11 Red 2014 SANTA TERESA GROUP Even though we came back to Melbourne eight weeks ago our journey to Santa Teresa has not ended! During our time at Santa Teresa we spent a lot of time at the Community Care Centre. There, they have a fantastic program that involves delivering food to 27 elderly residents in the community. From our time spent there we learnt from and saw many incredible people. Women who were dedicating their days to servicing the community of Santa Teresa. When we returned to Melbourne, we had an Immersion Reflection day at Avila and one of our actions from this day was that we wanted to continue our journey and relationships with this Centre, so we chatted to them and we all thought it might be nice to send over Christmas presents to the elderly people in the community. In these packs there are necessities such as shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, soap, face washers and pillowcases. These items were requested by the women who ran the Centre. To us, this present is so special because we know exactly where they are going and what impact it will have on the community. We hope that these presents will further build our relationship with such an incredible community. As we took to the ground with minimal knowledge and training we managed to surprise both the opposition and ourselves. The Year 7 team did us proud only losing one of their games all day and not without a fight either. The Year 8s went out to play under Mr Bullock’s one instruction: “have fun”. And fun they had, as they approached all four games with a smile. They came out undefeated. Sarah stunned us all with her skillful bowling whilst Michala, Carla, Stephanie and Olivia added to our run tally with multiple 4s and 6s. A massive thank you to Mr Bullock and Mr Whiston who basically taught us how to play cricket from scratch (it wasn’t easy) and put in so much time and effort, not only on the day, but leading up the event. Good luck to both teams as we move onto regionals. Abbey Goullet Junior Cricket Team Milo Super 8s Intermediate Cricket The two Intermediate cricket teams consisted of girls in Year 9 and 10 who had a range of capabilities. On Wednesday 22 October the Avila teams arrived pumped and ready to battle the other schools at the cricket competition. Unfortunately, a number of teams pulled out at the last minute, which left the two Avila teams and Minaret College. The mixed team was up first against Minaret College; there were some explosive sixes and some stylish bowling from our girls, who came out victorious. The second game was the Year 9 team against Minaret College. Once again there were several spectacular fours and sixes, some managed to get into the doubles zone for 12 runs. In the end the Year 9s won by just 12 runs. This meant that both Avila teams had to face-off in the grand final. As the Year 9 team came out to bat there were boundaries being smashed all over the field. There was impressive dancing down the pitch and even more sixes. Next the mixed team came to the crease to bat. The first ball was a wicket, which was followed by another two wickets, the Year 9 team had scored themselves a team hat trick. The tension was extremely high in the last over with the mixed team only needing a few runs to win, yet the Year 9 team managed to hold on and leave the field winners. On behalf of the Year 9 and Year 10 cricket teams, I would like to thank our wonderful coaches Miss Flynn and Mr Johnson; without their support and guidance the day wouldn’t have been such a great success.
