TRINITY CHIMES NEWSLETTER TRINITY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH November 2014 Over the past 10 years or so Jane and I have made the commitment to bless our family (children, grandchildren, and our parents) to a 4 day family vacation up in southeastern Minnesota. It has become one of the most looked-forward-to and rewarding experiences in our family’s life together. It has become an event and an experience that Jane and I “treasure” in our lives. As with most things we “treasure” in our lives it comes at a cost. When we treasure our family it goes without saying that there is a cost involved—financial, emotional, time, and effort. The same can be said for almost anything we treasure, like hobbies, vacations and travel experiences, retirement, our jobs, etc. Whatever it is we treasure requires that we give intentional thought, planning, effort, and sacrifice to make sure we can bring it about and continue to enjoy the benefits. The “things” that we treasure in life are usually what we call our “priorities”. Our priorities can be our relationships, material things, experiences, or a goal we aspire to. Priorities are part and parcel of life in general but somehow we have come to the notion that we can separate our “religious” priorities from our “non-religious” priorities. Jesus taught that our entire life is to be used to honor God and that we are to “…love God with our entire life (heart, soul, mind, and strength” (Matthew 22:37) and that we are to earnestly “seek out God and practice the values of God’s kingdom” (Matthew 6:33). In other words we are to make God and what God loves, what God is passionate about, and what God cares about the top priority in our lives. Not that other relationships, material things, experiences, or goals should necessarily be neglected or dispensed with but that they should all be reviewed and surrendered to our number one priority, which is God, and our relationship with him through the Lord Jesus Christ. Making the Lord and everything that our Lord values the number one priority in life, our “treasure”, is a discipline that takes much intentional thought, planning, effort, and sacrifice, but the rewards are huge and worth it all! On Sunday, November 2, we will begin a devotion and worship emphasis called Treasure: A Stewardship Program on Faith and Money. The program will be based on Jesus’ words, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21). Over a period of four weeks, we will look at the many ways that our treasure (time, energy, money) affects our hearts. We will consider how financial challenges in our personal lives affect our relationships with people and with God. We will see how giving helps to determine the way we feel and act. If you have stress related to money or feel there may be more that God is calling you to do with your resources, this will be a helpful study. At the end of the four weeks, we will have the opportunity to make personal commitments of giving to Trinity United Methodist Church for the coming year. All of us will receive commitment cards in the mail, and the cards will also be available on Sunday mornings. We can fill out these cards and bring them to worship on Sunday, November 23. We look forward to an exciting month considering our treasure and God’s treasure. Schedule for the Treasure series: Sunday, Nov. 2: Where Is Your Treasure? (Matthew 6:19-21) Sunday, Nov. 9: The Problem with Two Masters (Matthew 6:24) Sunday, Nov. 16: Giving Your Treasure Back to God (Matthew 6:1-6) Sunday, Nov. 23: Don’t Worry ’Bout a Thing (Matthew 6:25-34) November 2– Available November 9– Marlys Pogemiller In Loving Memory of Dwight Pogemiller November 16– Available November 23– Janice, Nanette & Richard Gauger In Loving Memory of John & Arlette Gauger November 30– Sharon Uetz & Famly, Nancy & Jerry Joerger and Family In Loving Memory of Mildred Kruse’s birthday on November 29th. We encourage you to support missions as you are able, both those here and those sponsored by special groups in our church family and community. The viral disease, Ebola, has created a crisis for the people of the West African countries of Liberia, Sierra Leone and Ivory Coast. The Ebola epidemic is having a negative impact on the health care systems, the economies and the social services provided in the affected countries. The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is partnering with local health boards, bishops, and missionaries to support immediate and long-term efforts to control this disease. UMCOR funding is being used to provide educational programs, protective equipment and other Ebolarelated supplies and psychosocial counseling for infected people and their families. To financially support these efforts, write “Ebola response“ in the memo section of your check. More specific designations can be made to: 982450 International Disaster Response; 3021951 UMCOR Sustainable Recovery and Development; 3021770 UMCOR Global Health; 15124A UMC Salary Support- Liberia; 14552A UMC Salary Support- Sierra Leone. World Communion Sunday Offering Trinity UMC collected $113 in donations on World Communion Sunday, October 5th. These funds are used to provide scholarships for national and international graduate students whom God has gifted to learn and serve. This is the 5th of 6 church wide special Sunday offerings. The 6th and final Special Sunday offerings is UM Student Day, December 30th. Outreach Africa In many African countries, food for hospital patients is provided by the patient’s family. This creates particular problems for Ebola patients in isolation or with no family support. Outreach Africa (www.outreachafrica.org) is an Iowabased organization coordinating a relief effort to send 700,000 packaged meals to Liberia. The Nurtured Heart Approach The October 14th issue of the Charles City Press had a front page article on this Our Kids Count Program. This 8-week program uses the Nurtured Heart Approach to strengthen families. Each weekly session includes a meal and separate learning activities for parents and children. TUMC has provided the facilities, some of the community volunteers involved in meal preparation and with children’s activities, and thru the Missions Committee some financial support. A special holiday party is set for Tuesday, December 2nd. A spring Our Kids Count Workshop series is planned if financial resources can be raised. Below Shelley shares some thoughts and results about the Nurtured Heart Approach. Thank you for the opportunity to share about the details of the Nurtured Heart Approach at Our Kids Count. I have a deep appreciation for the support provided by TUMC. The facility, the volunteers sharing their precious evening hours, and the funding are essential to our success. The sustained commitment truly demonstrates the compassion of the leaders and members. It is a valuable partnership that is making a difference in the lives of many. Going into the spring we will face the continued cost of the meals, have a need for volunteers (19 for this session), and champions for promoting attendance. In this current session, I have observed: I have a great respect for the parents committed to attending the six week session of Our Kids Count Nurtured Heart. If they know better, they will do better; and they care about each other. The facilitators have created a culture of dignity and focus on successes. The diversity of the individual needs and sharing of their weekly experiences with this approach is rich. On the first night parents began using the language and approach of Nurtured Heart before they left the building. There is faithful attendance week to week and the surveys indicate parents are learning and gaining supports. The approach is a process and requires work which has led to intentional parenting. These meals will feed 1000 patients for a period of 6 months and will ensure that Ebola victims have a fighting chance of survival. Meals cost $0.25 each so $25 will provide 100 meals, $50 will provide 200 meals, etc. Tax deductible donations can be made on line or by check to Outreach to Liberia, 301 Center Street, Union, Iowa, 50258. In the Gospel of Mathew Jesus is recorded as saying, “ I was hungry and you gave me food; thirsty and you gave me drink; a stranger and you took me in; sick and you comforted me.” We probably won’t have the opportunity to provide these services to Jesus personally. He continued,” Inasmuch as you have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, you have done it unto me.” As we celebrate Thanksgiving, 2014, we need to stop and give thanks for the many blessings which we enjoy: food, shelter, health/ health care, employment, education, security, and various freedoms and opportunities. We also need to share the “wealth” with others who aren’t similarly blessed. To whom much is given, much is expected. Page 4 Trinity's Weekly Prayer Lunch On Tuesday, October 21st we began a new ministry within Trinity UMC. We gather in the Epworth Room (Fireside Room) during the lunch hour to pray. We pray for: our church, our staff, Sunday services, different ministries within the church and our volunteers, needs within the congregation, our community, our nation and our world. This will be an informal time so bring a sack lunch and come and go as you need to. Most of the time will be spent in silent prayer time but we will begin the hour by sharing and listing concerns. God has the power to answer prayer so let's do it! If you have any questions please contact Jane Beranek. Parents Group Do you have school age children or are you just beginning your family? Would it be helpful to bounce parenting ideas and experiences off of other people going through the same situations? Trinity is offering a new group that will aim to do just that! A group will be beginning after the new year on January 26th from 6-7:30pm and will be offered every 4th Monday evening of the month. The gathering will begin with a meal at Trinity for the whole family and then the children will split off for some fun and fellowship of their own while parents tackle some of the hard hitting situations of parenting. Please let Julie Mayhew or Heather Ellis know if you are interested in being a part of this new group or if you would be able to be a babysitter while the group meets, that would be greatly appreciated also! Do you feel blessed for all you have? Has God given you an abundant bounty? Thanksgiving is an excellent time to share your bounty with those who are less fortunate. Trinity hosts two ministries to help those in need: Our Brother’s Keeper provides assistance with the most basic human needs, rental assistance, utilities and food vouchers for residents of Charles City. Ministerium Fuel Fund provides assistance to those who are having trouble paying their utility bills like gas, water and electric bills for residents in Floyd County. Make A Difference Day The United Methodist Women in Charles City met earlier in October for their annual "Make A Difference Day" event. These members of Trinity United Methodist Church have been participating in this event for several years. They spend time making items for mission work such as receiving blankets and infant sweaters. They also collect items and assemble school kits, health kits, and birthing kits. Tied quilts done by these volunteers are distributed locally through the Department of Human Services social workers. Aluminum pop tabs are packaged for Ronald McDonald House, Milk Moola points are collected for Central Preschool, and Box Tops for Education are clipped for local schools. This year the group completed 24 health kits, 26 birthing kits, 40 school bags, 3 comfort covers, 3 sweaters, 3 pairs of mittens, and 2 Cover-Them -With-Love quilts. Page 8 United Methodist Student Day is coming November 30, 2014 Across the country, the people of the United Methodist Church are serving the people God loves in Jesus’ name. We’re doing it at home, but so often we’d like to do more. We want to serve those in other places who are suffering. We want to offer spiritual words of hope and life. And we want to be well-equipped to do both! But the reality for most of us is that our responsibilities—home, family, work—don’t allow us to engage with every need we’d like to meet. Right now there are UMC young people— who might not have had the resources to attend a school of their choice, or, for some, any school at all—who’ve been sent by you into the world God loves because of your giving to United Methodist Student Day. When you give generously you are support these students as they prepare for a life that unites faith with knowledge. What no one person or congregation can do alone, we’re doing together. Please give generously on UM Student Sunday— Your Gift makes a World of Difference! New Women’s Bible Study Beginning On Thursday, October 30th from 5:30 – 7:00 pm a new women’s Bible study on Gideon will begin. We will meet at Trinity United Methodist Church in the library and the study will last 6 weeks. The study is by Priscilla Shirer who has a knack of bringing the depths of Scripture to life. Each Thursday evening we will watch a DVD and go over the previous week’s homework (to get the most out of the study you will want to do the daily homework, but it is not required). “Ever feel insufficient? Could it be that your weaknesses are the keys that unlock God's strength? Through a look at the life of Gideon, you can discover that instead of ignoring, neglecting, or trying to escape your weaknesses, you can see them as the gifts, given specifically and strategically by God to unlock the door of God’s strength.” Come join us as we delve into the life of Gideon.
