Jones, Nichol Named Preseason All-Big Ten, Boilers Picked Fifth
Seniors KiKi Jones and Val Nichol were among 15 players selected to the 2014 Preseason All-Big Ten volleyball team on Thursday. Nichol, a 6-1
setter/outside hitter, was named as one of six unanimous selections made by the league’s coaches after earning All-Big Ten, All-Northeast Region and
AVCA All-America third team honors last season. The preseason honor is the first for Nichol and for Jones, a 6-1 middle blocker, who garnered AllRegion and Honorable Mention All-America accolades in 2013.
In addition to the Preseason All-Big Ten team, the league’s coaches voted in a preseason poll and the Boilermakers were placed fifth behind Penn
State, Nebraska, Wisconsin and Illinois. Purdue finished sixth in league play in 2013 with an 11-9 mark. Last year, the Boilers posted a 5-5 record against
the four teams ranked ahead of them in the poll, including a season sweep of Nebraska and two wins against the Fighting Illini.
Fabulous Freshmen
The 2014 Boilermaker volleyball team includes a freshman class of seven talented individuals, who were collectively ranked as the third best group
in the nation by prepvolleyball.com. Three of the rookies made their Boilermaker debuts on opening weekend: Azariah Stahl, Danielle Cuttino and Lydia
Dimke. Linnea Rohrsen saw her first action of the season as a server against Austin Peay. Since then, Stahl has turned in 1.85 kills per set and Cuttino
has posted 1.01 blocks and 1.57 kills per set. Dimke has become a vital part of Purdue’s 6-2 offense over the last five matches with 1.55 assists per set,
1.38 digs per set and 21 aces. Rohrsen has been a serving specialist, seeing action in eight matches.
Christina Ambrose, Cuttino, Dimke and Stahl were named to the 2014 Volleyball Magazine Fab 50 listing. The quartet, all of whom were listed as
PrepVolleyball Top 50 Senior Aces also garnered Under Armour All-America honors. Cuttino, a 6-4 middle blocker from Indianapolis, Ind., was the
No. 10 Senior Ace, while Ambrose, a 6-4 outside hitter from Orlando, Fla., came in at No. 20 on the listing. Stahl, a 5-11 outside hitter from Elkhart,
Ind., was the No. 21 Senior Ace, while Dimke, a 6-2 outside hitter/setter from Ham Lake, Minn., was PrepVolleyball’s No. 50 Senior Ace.
Ambrose and Dimke were Under Armour All-America first team honorees, while Stahl & Cuttino were second team selections in November.
Carissa Damler, a 5-3 defensive specialist from Brownsburg, Ind., is two-time all-conference selection. Burgundy Price, a 5-6 defensive specialist
from Woodburn, Ind., is a four-time all-ACAC conference selection and was named as a Defensive Dandy by PrepVolleyball.com in 2013. Rohrsen, a
5-4 defensive specialist from Chicago, Ill., is an all-conference selection and led Nazareth Academy in digs as a senior.
Evans Makes Splash As Redshirt Freshman
The lone true freshman on the 2013 team, setter Ashley Evans, had a decorated prep career, but redshirted 2013 to gain experience in the Purdue
system. The talented setter made an impact on opening weekend, garnering MVP honors at the Mortar Board Premier after posting 1.89 kills, 3.11 digs,
0.44 blocks and five aces in three starts. Thus far in 2014, she is averaging 1.22 kills and 2.34 digs per set and has served up 18 aces.
Evans was listed as No. 21 on PrepVolleyball’s Senior Aces, was a second team AVCA/Under Armour All-America selection for 2012-13 and also
was a two-time PrepVolleyball All-American. The Liberty Township, Ohio, native also was a finalist for the Ohio Gatorade Player of the Year honor
and earned first team all-state accolades and Greater Miami Conference Player of the Year accolades each of her last two seasons at Lakota East.

Academic Accolades
In addition to finding continued success on the court, the 2013 Purdue volleyball team
received the NCAA Public Recognition Award for posting a multi-year academic progress
rate among the top 10 percent of its sport. The Boilermakers received the award for the ninthstraight season.
The APR, now in its eighth year, measures the eligibility, retention and graduation of
student-athletes completing on every Division I sports team. The most-recent APR scores
are multi-year rates based on the scores from the 2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-12
academic years.
Representing the USA
Freshman middle blocker Danielle Cuttino will be bringing some new hardware to West
Lafayette after receiving a gold medal as part of the U.S. Women’s Junior National team
on July 15. The WJNT defeated Cuba 25-15, 25-22, 25-16 to earn the top spot at the U-20
NORCECA Continental Championships in Guatemala.
Senior setter/outside hitter Val Nichol also competed for the USA over the summer as part
of the U.S. Collegiate National team, which took part in the Global Challenge in Pula, Croatia
in July. The U.S. team advanced to the championship match against Slovenia.
Shondell’s Successes
Head coach Dave Shondell picked up his 200th career collegiate victory with Purdue’s
sweep of Bowling Green on Sept. 15, 2012. The Boilermakers have posted a 258-138 record in
12 seasons under Shondell, including a 131-105 Big Ten mark. Under his watch, the program
has become part of an elite group nationally. Including the 2013 season, Purdue is one of 11
schools nationally to make nine NCAA second round appearances in the last 10 seasons. In
addition, the Boilermakers have made seven Sweet 16 berths in the last nine seasons, making
the program one of just six in the nation that can boast the accomplishment, alongside Florida,
Nebraska, Penn State, Stanford and Texas.
Under Shondell, Purdue has posted seven 20-win seasons, including 23 victories in 2013,
and defeated 42 ranked foes. In 2011, the Boilermakers finished second in the Big Ten, its
best conference placing since 1987, and posted 29 wins, the most since 1985. Shondell has
coached players to seven All-American honors and three Academic All-America accolades.
His charges also have earned 18 All-Big Ten and 71 Academic All-Big Ten accolades.
Aiding Shondell in leading Purdue are associate head coach John Shondell and assistant
coach Kathy Jewell. The trio are the longest tenured complete staff in the Big Ten Conference.
