Largemouth Bass: Bass are being caught in shallow areas more often. Banks leading into these areas are the
more popular areas to locate fish. Baitfish are not in the
shallow water as good as they will be. Topwater lures,
crankbaits, and plastic worms are being used.
Smallmouth Bass: Most are being caught by those targeting largemouth.

Crappie: Deep brush in bays are the better areas to target.
Some docks are being targeted. Minnows and jigs are
being used. Most anglers are catching 7 or 8 keepers per
trip.
Catfish: River drifters using a variety of baits are catching
a lot of catfish.
Striped bass: More fish are being caught this week than
last. Shad is the better bait, but jigs and spoons are also
being used.

AEDC WMA Units 1 & 2 November, December Permits to Go on Sale November 5
NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency has announced the Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC) Wildlife Management Area units 1 & 2 first come, first serve 2014 deer permits will go on sale Wednesday,
Nov. 5 at 8 a.m. (CDT).
Permits can be purchased at any TWRA license agent or through the internet at www.tnwildlife.org. Hunters who purchase the permit are reminded that they will need to retain their receipt. The receipt will serve as the permit. No phone
sales will be accepted.
A permit fee will not be charged to Annual Sportsman (Type 004) or Lifetime Sportsman (Types 402 thru 405) license
holders or Senior Citizen Hunters (Type 166) with an Annual Senior Citizen Permit (Type 167). For all other license
holders, the cost is $10 per permit, plus agent fee.
Customers can only obtain one permit per hunt choice. Customers can obtain one permit for each hunt choice for a
total of six permits per person.
First come, first serve permits are sold one at a time per transaction. Customers can purchase permits for others as
long as they have all their pertinent information. The same one permit per hunt choice applies.

Crappie: Bluffwalls and docks are the top visited locations
by crappie anglers. Jigs are being used by most anglers.
Striped Bass: Shad is the best bait. Jigs, swimbaits, and
spoons are also being used in the tailwaters. Some days
are better than others.
Bluegill: Many are being caught around docks, near bluffs
and in open water while drifting in the upper reservoir.
Worms are the better bait.
Catfish: Bait selection normally determines the odds of
catching a big fish. Shad is the best bait. Several are being caught while drifting in the main channel.

TWRA Launching New Weekly TV Program, Tennessee Uncharted
NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency is serving as a partner in a new weekly-television program, Tennessee
Uncharted which hits the air waves in November.
The 30-minute show can be seen on PBS stations across the state on the Tennessee Channel. The program will showcase the
outdoors including unique locations, techniques and traditions in the Volunteer State.
Host and musician Erick Baker will lead the way on the weekly adventure, mined from the outdoors of Tennessee. Erick feels, after
years on the road with his music, “It’s that thing calling me back home.” He views the show as “an opportunity to showcase the
greatness of our home state. Sometimes you have to travel the world to see how beautiful it is at home.”

All 400 Permits Issued at Drawing for Sandhill Crane Hunt
NASHVILLE --- All 400 permits were issued at a Saturday
hand-held drawing to participate in Tennessee’s second sandhill crane hunt. The drawing was held at the Birchwood Community Center in north Hamilton County.
As a result of the drawing, there are no leftover permits to issue
this week at Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency regional
offices.
The draw was conducted by TWRA staff members from the
Nashville office and the TWRA Region III office in Crossville.

All persons issued a sandhill crane permit must pass an
internet-based crane identification test before hunting. All
permits issued are not valid until a verifiable “Sandhill Test”
validation code is written on each permit. The purpose of this
test is to improve hunter’s awareness and ability to distinguish between sandhill cranes and protected species which
may be encountered while hunting. The test is now available
online.
The Tennessee Fish and Wildlife Commission established a
limited sandhill crane hunting season for a designated area
in East Tennessee. The sandhill crane hunting season runs
with the late waterfowl season
on Nov. 22-23
and Nov. 29 Jan. 1, 2015.

an Outdoors-Woman Muzzleloader Workshop
will be sponsored by the Tennessee Wildlife
Resources Agency Nov. 14-16 in Humphreys
County.

weekend with like-minded individuals. The private farm for the event incorporates a variety of

Workshop participants are required to have the appropriate licenses. Participants born on or after Jan. 1, 1969 will
need to have successfully completed the hunter education
course. Participants will draw from a number of predetermined sites that will have tree stands.

Dale Hollow: Fishing is slow. Water temperature is 68 degrees; lake is falling.
Bass: A few bass are being caught in the rivers on crankbaits and spinnerbaits around shallow cover.
Smallmouth: A few smallmouth are being caught on jigs on broken banks
in 25 feet of water. Crappie: A few crappie are being caught near the dam
while fishing grassy points in 15 feet of water. Also, a few crappie are being
caught in the rivers while fishing fallen trees in 15-to-20 feet of water.
Shellcrackers: Several shellcrackers are being caught on nightcrawlers
while fishing grass in 10 feet of water.

2014 Elk Hunts Have Five Harvests
NASHVILLE --- For the second consecutive year, four of the five participants recorded harvests in the Tennessee Elk Hunt held Oct.
20-24 at North Cumberland Wildlife Management Area.
In the Tennessee Youth Elk Hunt, held the weekend of Oct. 25-26, the participant had a harvest for the third in as many years since
the hunt was established. Robert L. Goodner, a 14-year old from Cleveland was the first boy selected for the youth hunt. Robert had
the biggest overall harvest this year with his take of a 6x8 bull elk that field dressed at 646 pounds and was taken on the morning of
Oct. 26.
During the regular hunt, Jefferson City resident Jimmy Rogers had this year’s first harvest. It came in the evening on opening day and
was a 6x6 that field dressed at 593 pounds.
On the second day of the hunt, two harvests were made both coming in the evening. Audie Schrimsher of Maryville took an elk that
was a 5x5 that weighed 462 pounds. Hartsville resident Clay Oldham also took a 5x5 elk and it had a field dressed weight of 465
pounds.
The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Foundation received the Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), permit. The permit was auctioned on eBay with the proceeds going to benefit the Tennessee Elk Restoration Program Shane Alexander took a 6x6, 520 pound
elk in the morning of Oct 23. He is a former Tennessee resident who now lives in Missoula, Montana.

BENTON, TN WOMAN CONTINUES FOUR GENERATONS OF GOODNESS
While attending the 4-day
Museum of Appalachia Fall
Homecoming Festival in Norris,
TN in early October as an author
exhibitor, I had the good fortune
of meeting Sandy Hood of Benton, TN. Sandy is propietor of
Sannie Mae’s Heirloom Foods,
a fourth-generation family business. My husband and I visited
Sandy’s exhibit at the Festival
and took home a jar of chow
chow and blueberry preserves
to sample. The products were
delicious and Sandy was gracious enough to share her family
story for this magazine feature
this month. Following is Sandy’s
story in her own words.
“Sannie Mae’s Heirloom
Foods comes from four generations of my Mother’s family
dating back to my grandmother.
The recipes are from her family
who lived and worked in Elkmont
and Tremont, where my Mother
was born, before the Great
Smoky Mountains National Park
was established. Gardening and
canning was a way of life for our
family and still is today. After my
Mom’s passing my dream was to
share these original foods. We
began offering samples to family
and friends and because of their
continued requests for additional
samples and lots of encouragement; Sannie Mae’s Heirloom
Foods was established in January 2011. the first product was
Mom’s traditonal Chow-Chow and the next year Jake’s Creek Hot Chow-Chow, Squash Pickles
and Pickled Okra was added. New products introduced in 2014 are Apple Relish, Corn Relish,
Pool Hall Slaw, Salsa BY George and Uncle Porgie’s Bee Sting, a flavorful habanero hot sauce.”

Here are some of Sandy’s Serving Suggestions and Favorite Recipes:
Chow-Chow - Serve with pinto beans and great northern beans, on a salad, rice, baked potato;
use as a garnish on grilled chicken breast; pour over cream cheese for a party treat.
Jake’s Creek Hot Chow-Chow - Serve with pinto beans and great northern beans; put on a hot

dog and you’ve made a Sannie Mae’s Smoky Mountain hot
dog, a family favorite.
Squash Pickles - Serve as a side dish with any meal; include
on a relish-tray; make hors d’oeuvres (recipe: Place round butter tasting crackers on a serving tray; put squash pickle on each
cracker; add slices of cream cheese; top with small slice of red
onion.)
Pickled Okra - Serve on a salad; top deviled eggs with a slice;
make hors d’oeuvres (recipe: Place round butter tasting crackers
on a serving tray; put thin slice of Roma tomato on each cracker;
add slice of cream cheese; top with slice of pickled okra.); eat
right out of the jar!

LaGrange is a wildlife officer in TWRA Region II’s District 22. He was selected among other TWRA law enforcement
officers to become the state recipient. He will be recognized during the annual SEAFWA meeting scheduled Oct. 19-22,
in Destin, Fla. LaGrange is assigned to Hickman County, but works throughout the 13 counties in District 22.
