November Meeting, Tuesday, November 11, 6:30 p.m.
Join Brenda Brueggemann, Professor and Director of
Composition at The University of Louisville, author and researcher
as she shares her story.
Brenda says that growing up in an
isolated rural western Kansas environment (a farm girl) before
mainstreaming or hearing aids that would work for her, she
learned very well how to “pass” as hearing. I didn’t know I was
deaf. A few of the things I will explore in my talk:
• How I learned to be (proudly) deaf while I still (also proudly) circulated my
personal and professional life in the hearing world
• How I happily settled on “hard of hearing” as my identifying term of choice
•
How my deafness has really mattered (and in all the best and right ways) in my
professional career - make good use of a concept of the Deaf community now calls
“Deaf gain” (not hearing loss)
• How moments of and with my hearing loss still sometimes catch me by surprise
(and with some stigma and pain)

From the President’s Corner We are almost ready for the Thanksgiving Holiday. Has it been
a year already?! What a wonderful year it has been for our
Chapter. And, it is all thanks to the number of open hearts
willing to give time, energy, and resources to the Hearing Loss
Association of America Kentuckiana Chapter.
Our Board members have given freely of their time
and energies to advocate for those of us with hearing loss and
our families, to help support and bring information to us, and to
provide outreach and awareness to others in the community.
Thank you so much Ron and Jean Haynes, John Perry, Gerry
Gordon-Brown, Kay Calvert, Paula Esterle, Theresa Kidwell,
Melanie Magruder, Bob Stuckey, Jana Colter, Pat Flaherty, Karen Lichtefeld, and
Merle Williams.
The month of November promises to be a great one for our hearing loss
community. On November 8th more than ten members are walking and several
others are making donations to support “Celebrate Sound, Don’t Walk in Silence”
organized by the U. of L. Audiology students and the service organization Sertoma.

On November 11th I am really looking forward to hearing
Dr. Brenda
Brueggemann at our regular meeting as she tells us about her life with hearing loss
“Getting a (Deaf) Life”. Don’t miss it. Invite your family and friends. Each person’s
story and success helps all of us.
The Support Group continues on Thursday, November 13th from 2-4 at Bon
Air Library with Michelle Niehaus, Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Program
Administrator of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services for the Ky. Division of
Behavioral Health. Let me know if you would like to be added to the group. She
has given us quite a gift with her guidance and understanding of living with hearing
loss.
The Chapter Building Workshop will be held on November 15th with Ed Ogiba,
Chapter Building Specialist from HLAA National. Ron Haynes, State Coordinator
and his wife Jean are hosting Ed. The Kentucky Home Chapter has organized
some fun sight-seeing and dinner the afternoon and evening before. And, our
Kentuckiana Chapter will be hosting a dinner after the workshop. There’s always
room for more. Details follow.
There’s a Cochlear Community meeting on November 18 from 6-7:30 with
Cochlear Representative, Brittany Pellegra organized by Cochlear volunteers.
Details follow about that, too.
And, last but not least, are some Access Services for those who would like to
support the Arts this month. There is Open Captioning available at the Actor’s
Theatre matinee on Saturday, November 22nd as well as an evening performance at
the Kentucky Center that evening. The captions are provided by volunteers! So,
please be sure to thank them and even to offer to help if you can. What a

Chapter Professional Advisor
Dr. Cathy Ann Miller, Au.D., Doctor of Audiology has agreed to be a Professional
Advisor for our Chapter. What a wonderful addition she has been as she attends
functions and meetings and answers our questions. She joins our founding
Professional Advisor Emeritus, Dr. Barbara Eisenmenger, who is currently working
at the Norton Common’s office of University Audiology.
Cathy Miller is the owner and founder of Doctors Hearing
Care. She attended Indiana University for her undergraduate
degree; the University of Louisville for her masters degree and the
University of Florida for her doctorate. She is Board Certified by
the American Board of Audiology and a member of the Academy
of Doctors of Audiology. Dr. Miller is a life-long resident of
Southern Indiana.
She has two grown sons, Nicholas and
Nelson. Her dog, Stellar, is in the office with her every day. In her
spare time, Dr. Miller enjoys yoga, weightlifting, scuba diving,
hunting and cooking.

Janny Scheeline, Merle Williams, and Ron & Jean Haynes attended the
visitation and the Mass of Christian Burial on October 11, 2014 at Mother of God
Church in Covington, Kentucky for Elizabeth Ann Meyer Timon who passed
October 2. Betty or Just Betty as she became known was a former Self Help for
Hard of Hearing People (SHHH) member and a well acknowledged advocate for
people with hearing loss. Laura, David & Cammi Kogut and Tracy Lundergan also
attended.
Jane & Bud Smith are grieving the sudden death of Jane’s son, Joseph Coy
Smith, Jr. on October 14, 2014 Joey passed away after being struck by a truck
while crossing a street in Bardstown. Our sympathies go to Jane and Bud in this
loss. Please keep them in your prayers. Becky Crawford, Carlene Ballard and
Ron & Jean Haynes attended the October 17-18 visitation and funeral at the
Barlow Funeral Home and the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral in Bardstown.
Ed & Connie Schickel and Marilyn Fenwick of HLAA Kentucky Home also
attended.

Several members met on October 23 with Michelle Niehaus, Licensed Clinical

Becky Crawford drove Ron & Jean Haynes and Jeannie Taylor to the October
24-25, 2014 Kentucky Commission on the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Town Hall and
Commissioners meeting in Newport, Kentucky where they were joined by David
Bayersdorfer. Becky, Jeannie and David are commissioners on the board.
Carla & G Trivedi drove to Washington, D.C. for the Walk4Hearing on October 25,
2014. This was the seventh year their daughter, Claire Brolin has walked in the
D.C. Walk4Hearing. In 2012, her husband, John Brolin joined her, in 2013 their
daughter, Fiona Dewdrop Brolin joined her and now in 2014, her parents joined her.
Claire is working on a large family team!

Membership Report October 1, 2013:
October is the beginning of the new membership year with Chapter Dues of $12
payable. Chapter Dues were initiated on 10/01/2009. Since then, our chapter has
grown from 28 chapter dues paying members on 09/30/2010 to 62 on 09/30/2014.
Of the 62, 42 are HLAA members.
After a slow start for 2014/2015, we have 52 members who are paid current
until 09/30/2015. Of those, four are new members and three are former household
members who have moved up to individual members. We have seven couples who
pay as individual members!
The sad news is we have 17 members who have not renewed. Two of those
have sent their regrets that they will not be renewing but several have sent word
that they are renewing at the November meeting. To be eligible for the HLAA
Membership drawing, dues must be paid by December 1, 2014.

HLAA Kentuckiana Chapter Individual Membership Scholarship Fund
In the spirit of our mission; at the October HLAAKC Board Meeting it was moved
and carried to create a HLAAKC Individual HLAA Membership Scholarship Fund for
ten (10) scholarships at $35.00 each to be given at a drawing during the December
11, 2014 Dinner Meeting.

Current HLAAKC primary individual members, who have paid for the
10/01/2014 - 09/30/2015 year no later than December 1, 2014, will be eligible
for the 2014 drawing.
o Eligible members can only win one scholarship. (If you have won in a
previous year, your eligibly would be void.)
For those already a HLAA member, they will receive an additional year of
membership. If they are HLAA Couple/Family members, they can donate the
difference ($10) to the HLAAKC Individual HLAA Membership Scholarship
Fund and have their HLAA Couple/Family membership for an additional year
or they can accept the HLAA Individual membership.
A winner may transfer their Scholarship to an eligible member who is not a
HLAA member.

FINANCING OPTIONS FOR HEARING AIDS - and other things an informed
consumer needs to know
John Perry will present on Financing Options for Hearing Aids
and other things an informed consumer needs to know. He will
review current hearing aid technology, one feature is certain, be
sure to ask the hearing professional to include a telecoil in your
hearing aid. Also a review on the channels through which hearing
aids are distributed, what you need to know as an informed
consumer. Finally and very important, he will explore the options
available to us to help finance this expense.
John was the 2009-2011 president of Hearing Loss Association of
America Kentuckiana Chapter and is currently their 2014 treasurer. He first found
out about his hearing loss at age 23 when he enlisted in the Kentucky Air National
Guard. He would say that most of his hearing loss was caused by rock 'n roll,
fireworks, cap pistols, model airplane engines and woodworking machinery. His
hearing, along with his eyesight, was recorded as a “2” in his official physical
profile. Fortunately, his having a “2” for his hearing profile did not keep him from his
chosen field of weather. Jump forward twenty years plus and John’s hearing was
getting so bad that he had to do something. He found the national Hearing Loss
Association of America (HLAA) when it was still named Self Help for the Hard of
Hearing (SHHH) and subscribed to the journal. It took him another two years
before he was ready to go and see first a dispenser, second another dispenser and
finally an audiologist. He bought his hearing aids from the audiologist. His only
regret is that he had not accepted his hearing loss sooner and had done something
about it. He continued to struggle with the challenges of his hearing loss. Though
things have gotten better, John says he is still a work in progress.

HLAA-KY 2015 Conference Planning Committee Meeting: October 23, 2014
The 2015 planning committee met at Fern Creek Library.

KCDHH Town Hall: October 24, 2014
The Kentucky Commission of the Deaf & Hard of Hearing (KCDHH) meeting was
held at Newport on the Levee in Newport, Kentucky. A community conversation
was planned about public housing for people who are deaf or hard of hearing; the
“Just Betty” project.

Louisville Cochlear Community Chapter Event: October 28, 2014
The event met at U of L campus on Shelbyville Road in the Founders Union

Conference and we were also able to promote the November meeting of HLAAKC.

Are you in the workforce? Are you looking for a job?
Looking for work, landing a job, and keeping your job can be difficult under the best
of circumstances, but it can seem to be minefield if you have a hearing loss. There
are ways to be successful at the workplace with a hearing loss. But you need the
right tools, do your homework, find out what’s right for you and for your employer,
and find ways to successfully advocate for yourself.

Anyone who has any degree of hearing loss deals with a number of unknown

Complimentary HLAA Membership for Veterans
Do you have a hearing loss due to military service? A report from the United
States Department of Veterans Affairs estimated that more than 59,000 military
members are on disability for hearing loss from Operation Iraqi Freedom and
Operation Enduring Freedom.
HLAA was founded in 1979 by Howard “Rocky” Stone, a retired CIA agent,
who endured hearing loss from his service in the United States Army. Rocky was
well-known in the agency for both his skill and his hearing loss. On one occasion he
was having a hard time “hearing” when talking with then-Director Richard Helms, so
Rocky plopped himself on Helms’ desk and asked him to face him directly so he
could read his lips! Another time, his old-fashioned body hearing aid was mistaken
for a recording spy device and was confiscated. Rocky earned the Agency’s highest
honor and went onto establish an organization for people who have hearing loss
and want to stay in the hearing world with technology and strategies.

We invite each chapter to join the 35th Anniversary Celebration starting this
November
HLAA’s 35th Anniversary is this November and a
committee of chapter and state leaders has created a
wonderful plan to celebrate with activities we hope you will
support for 13 consecutive months starting next month in
November. For each month in the Anniversary Celebration
Year you will find up to 5 or 6 suggested activities with the
hope that your chapter can execute at least one of these.
The goals are to promote the HLAA Mission and in that
regard to promote what each chapter offers its members
and community.

The list of suggested 35h Anniversary activities for this November is below. We
hope each chapter will consider executing one or more of these which includes
introducing Rocky Stone to your membership, discussing one of his short articles
from his book, An Invisible Condition, considering a rap session or member
discussion that was one of Rocky’s favorite support tools.

Hearing Loss Association of America Kentuckiana Chapter
(HLAAKC) is the local Kentucky/Indiana chapter located in Louisville, which is
an affiliate of HLAA.
We are under the HLAA 501c3 non-profit corporation
umbrella. Meetings of HLAAKC are free, open to the public, and take place at 6:30
P.M. on the second Tuesday of the month at St. Leonard Elementary School
Library, 440 Zorn Ave. Occasionally we meet at other places or at other times for
different activities, including socials; any changes will be found in this newsletter by
