Our strengths
Our strengths
Employability and our links with industry
GCU strives to ensure all of its programmes give
students the skills required in the global workplace. For
example, more than half of our undergraduate
programmes offer students opportunities for hands-on
work experience.
The University develops its programmes to meet the
evolving needs of business and industry and many of
GCU’s programmes are accredited by industry bodies or
created in partnership with professional organisations.
For example:
• GCU is the first Chartered Institute for Securities and
Investment Centre of Excellence specialising in
financial services operations
• Our MSc in Risk Management has been described as
a beacon of expertise by Steve Fowler, Chief Executive
of the Institute of Risk Management
• Our banking and finance programmes are the first in
the world to have triple accreditation from the
Chartered Banker Institute, the Chartered Institute for
Securities and Investment and the Institute of
Operational Risk
Our programmes are also supported by major global
brands in a range of industries including:
• FMC Technologies
• Ralph Lauren
• Morgan Stanley
•M&S
Our focus on employability means that more than 96%
of GCU’s graduates are in employment or further study
within six months of graduating.
Research
In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise
(RAE), which assesses the quality of research produced
across the UK’s universities, more than three quarters of
the research submitted by GCU was judged to be of
international quality. RAE ranked the University’s
research in rehabilitative health sciences top in the UK
and its research in the built environment the best in
Scotland and in the top 20 in the UK.
To build on our research success, GCU has recently
further invested in its award-winning graduate school
and established research institutes focusing on our
strengths.
Global partnerships

students from more than 100 countries, GCU has
partnerships with leading institutions around the world
including in:
•China
•India
• North America
• South America

Latin America and the UK. These partnerships offer GCU
students and staff opportunities to enrich their
experience as well as share research and develop
innovative joint programmes.
08

Discover Scotland
Scotland attracts more than 16 million visitors each year, and an average of 47 million visits are
made to its major attractions, which include historic and cosmopolitan cities, breathtaking beaches
and some of the most beautiful countryside in the world.
Innovation and invention
Scotland is a proud nation with a rich history. Many
explorers, inventors and entrepreneurs were born in the
country, and a huge range of innovations that have
shaped the way we live, including TV, the telephone,
pneumatic tyre, refrigerator, radar and penicillin, were
created or discovered by Scots. Today, Scotland’s
commercial status has been transformed from a base for
heavy industry, to providing highly skilled manufacturing
and services including food and drink, tourism, the
creative industries, life sciences, telecommunications
and financial services.
Educational excellence
Scotland has long enjoyed a global reputation as having
one of the best educational systems in the world. With
its emphasis on proactive, independent thinking, a
Scottish education encourages the development of the
skills that are directly relevant and marketable to today’s
global employers.
11
Gateway to Europe
Scotland is an ideal base for touring further afield.
London is just over an hour away by plane and there are
regular flights from Glasgow to major European cities
such as Paris, Dublin, Berlin, Rome and Amsterdam.
Exploring Scotland
Glasgow’s central location at the heart of Scotland
means that many international students take the
opportunity to tour outside the city.
Natural beauty
At GCU, Scotland’s breathtaking countryside is never far
away. In the Highlands you’ll find charming villages and
stunning nature reserves, castles and lochs (Gaelic for
lakes). Loch Lomond National Park, featuring 720 square
miles of terrain, is just 30 minutes from Glasgow,
and not too far away are Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest
mountain, and Loch Ness – home of the Loch Ness
Monster, one of Scotland’s most enduring legends.

Essential information
Studying at GCU
Students must have a valid visa that entitles them to
study at GCU and the visa should be valid for
the duration of their course. International students
at GCU must:
• Promptly update the University with any change to
visa information and contact details
• Have a valid visa and prepare any visa extension 90
days before it expires
• Attend all classes and contact their School if absent
for any reason
• Not undertake paid work during term time for more
than the permission stated on their visa (ie 10/20
hours per week or not at all)
• Attend our UKBA attendance monitoring census
during term time
• Check their University email account at least weekly
and obey any instructions relating to GCU or UKBA
regulations or processes
• Attend re-registration to continue on their course
Fees
Student fees include all tuition, examination and IT and
access to the library. Students from the EU or an
associated country will pay fees at the same level as
domestic students. Most students from outside the EU
pay overseas fees. If you are unsure about your fee
status, please contact the International Office for advice.
Applicants are advised of the fees they will incur once a
formal offer of a place has been made. Fee levels for
each programme can be found on pages 35 to 38 and
online at www.gcu.ac.uk/money
The University needs you to pay a deposit when firmly
accepting your unconditional offer to secure a place on
27
your chosen programme. Once this deposit is received,
you will be sent all the documents necessary to apply for
your visa.
Living expenses
Students requiring a Tier 4 student visa are required by
the UKBA to show they have funds to cover living
expenses of £800 for each month of their programme,
up to a maximum of nine months. Students at GCU
London need £1,000 per month.
Feel free to email us at [email protected] if you
have any specific questions about the cost of living or
any other expenses.
The cost of living in Glasgow is lower than in some other
parts of the UK. In fact, it was ranked fourth cheapest in
the UK (Mercer Cost of Living Survey 2012). Average
monthly student expenses (estimated):
• Accommodation £400
• Energy bills £40
• Food/household goods £160
• Local transport £35
• Social activities £100
• Telephone and internet £25
• Books and printing £40
• Total: £800
The cost of living in London is higher and the UK Border
Agency requires that you have £1,000 per month to
cover living expenses in London.
Working during your studies
Students must adhere to the working conditions
permitted on their visa. If entitled to work, and studying
at degree level or above, during term time students are
Essential information
permitted to work a maximum of 20 hours per week.
During vacation time students can work full-time only
after they have submitted their dissertation. If, however,
students are studying below degree level they are only
permitted to work a maximum of 10 hours per week
during term time, and during vacation time can work
full-time.
English language
To study at GCU, students need to be comfortable
understanding lectures and coursework. So, if your
native language isn’t English, you will need to
demonstrate your English proficiency by sitting a
recognised English language test. There are some
examples of accepted levels of proficiency below, but
please note that some programmes require a higher
level, see pages 35 to 38 for more details.
Minimum language requirements:
• IELTS: average score of 6.0 with no element below 5.5
• TOEFL: Listening 17; Reading 18; Speaking 20;
Writing 17
• Pearsons: Listening 51; Reading 51; Speaking 51;
Writing 54.
