For example, more than half of our undergraduate programmes offer students opportunities for hands-on work experience. Research In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), which assesses the quality of research produced across the UK’s universities, more than three quarters of the research submitted by GCU was judged to be of international quality. The warmth and friendliness of the city’s people, known as Glaswegians, is legendary and the city was recently named the UK’s safest (Mercer Quality of Living survey 2011). It is also one of the UK’s least expensive places to live. Beautiful architecture Scotland’s largest city is surprisingly compact and easy to explore from GCU’s centrally located campus. A stroll through the city’s streets reveals its fascinating history and magnificent architecture – including many buildings designed by the world-famous Charles Rennie Mackintosh – alongside thriving bars and restaurants and a shopping experience rated the UK’s best outside London (Retail Footprint study). Events and days out Its mostly free museums, including the magnificent Kelvingrove Gallery and the iconic Riverside museum, are complemented by a flourishing visual-arts scene. In fact, we are ranked first in Scotland for transport links (ISB 2012). There are two train stations with links to the rest of the UK within walking distance of the campus and the city’s bus and coach hub is just across the road. As well as links to the rest of Scotland and the UK, there are regular shuttle bus services to Glasgow International Airport, which is just 15 minutes away. In addition, two stations on Glasgow’s metro system are just minutes’ walk from the campus. With trains every four minutes, it’s one of the fastest routes around the city. Step two Our decision All decisions on applications are emailed to applicants and you will receive one of three responses: • Conditional offer: you must meet the conditions included in the offer letter before an unconditional Equal opportunities: Fair admissions In accordance with its Charter, the University takes no account of religious, racial, gender, age, political consideration or sexual orientation in admitting students. Disability/special needs are not usually a bar to entry to programmes, but you are encouraged to declare fully these at an early stage so that any special arrangements are made before you join us. You must also declare past criminal convictions. This is particularly relevant for those applying to social work, nursing, midwifery and health programmes. 26 Essential information Studying at GCU Students must have a valid visa that entitles them to study at GCU and the visa should be valid for the duration of their course. International students at GCU must: • Promptly update the University with any change to visa information and contact details • Have a valid visa and prepare any visa extension 90 days before it expires • Attend all classes and contact their School if absent for any reason • Not undertake paid work during term time for more than the permission stated on their visa (ie 10/20 hours per week or not at all) • Attend our UKBA attendance monitoring census during term time • Check their University email account at least weekly and obey any instructions relating to GCU or UKBA regulations or processes • Attend re-registration to continue on their course Fees Student fees include all tuition, examination and IT and access to the library. Students from the EU or an associated country will pay fees at the same level as domestic students. Most students from outside the EU pay overseas fees. If you are unsure about your fee status, please contact the International Office for advice. Applicants are advised of the fees they will incur once a formal offer of a place has been made. Fee levels for each programme can be found on pages 35 to 38 and online at www.gcu.ac.uk/money The University needs you to pay a deposit when firmly accepting your unconditional offer to secure a place on 27 your chosen programme. Once this deposit is received, you will be sent all the documents necessary to apply for your visa. Living expenses Students requiring a Tier 4 student visa are required by the UKBA to show they have funds to cover living expenses of £800 for each month of their programme, up to a maximum of nine months. Students at GCU London need £1,000 per month. Feel free to email us at [email protected] if you have any specific questions about the cost of living or any other expenses. The cost of living in Glasgow is lower than in some other parts of the UK. In fact, it was ranked fourth cheapest in the UK (Mercer Cost of Living Survey 2012). Average monthly student expenses (estimated): • Accommodation £400 • Energy bills £40 • Food/household goods £160 • Local transport £35 • Social activities £100 • Telephone and internet £25 • Books and printing £40 • Total: £800 The cost of living in London is higher and the UK Border Agency requires that you have £1,000 per month to cover living expenses in London. Working during your studies Students must adhere to the working conditions permitted on their visa. If entitled to work, and studying at degree level or above, during term time students are Essential information permitted to work a maximum of 20 hours per week. During vacation time students can work full-time only after they have submitted their dissertation. If, however, students are studying below degree level they are only permitted to work a maximum of 10 hours per week during term time, and during vacation time can work full-time. English language To study at GCU, students need to be comfortable understanding lectures and coursework. So, if your native language isn’t English, you will need to demonstrate your English proficiency by sitting a recognised English language test. There are some examples of accepted levels of proficiency below, but please note that some programmes require a higher level, see pages 35 to 38 for more details. Minimum language requirements: • IELTS: average score of 6.0 with no element below 5.5 • TOEFL: Listening 17; Reading 18; Speaking 20; Writing 17 • Pearsons: Listening 51; Reading 51; Speaking 51; Writing 54. For full details of all scholarship and bursary criteria, visit www.gcu.ac.uk/ studyscholarships • International student bursary: All self-funded* overseas students receive £1000 for every year of their study at GCU. • Merit-based scholarships: Merit-based scholarships of up to an additional £1000 are available for self-funded students from China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Ghana, Russia, Brazil, Kenya, Nepal, Philippines, Mexico, Chile, Colombia and Myanmar. At undergraduate level, these scholarships apply to the first year of study. Continuing scholarships for self-funded students based upon their performance in the previous academic year are offered by individual academic schools. • 5% early deposit payment discount: Once an offer is made, students who pay the minimum fee deposit will receive 5% off their fees (after a scholarship has been applied). To qualify, the minimum deposit should be received by 1 August (for September intake) and 1 December (for January intake) and the balance must be paid at the start of the semester. • Alumni discount: Self-funded students who have completed (or are due to complete) an undergraduate degree at GCU are eligible for a discount of 20% on further study here. All courses offered by INTO GCU are fully accredited by Glasgow Caledonian University. 2 Choosing an INTO GCU course • International Certificate of Higher Education prepares candidates for entry to year two of an ordinary or honours degree at GCU. The programme has three pathways: Business and Management; Science and Computing, Engineering and Built Environment • International Diploma of Higher Education is equivalent to studying year two of a Scottish undergraduate degree and allows successful candidates to enter directly into year three of a relevant undergraduate programme at the Glasgow School for Business and Society or the School of Engineering and Built Environment. The International Diploma has pathways in Business, Computing, Engineering and Creative Industries • International Graduate Diploma of Higher Education prepares international students for a wide range of 39 postgraduate degrees1at GCU. There are pathways leading on to degrees in Business, Engineering, Computing or Creative Industries • Study Abroad with English is designed for B international students who want to experience life at a UK university.
