November is Rotary Foundation Month
The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International enables Rotarians to enhance world understanding,
goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty.
The Rotary Foundation has developed many successful programs to address this mission:
● PolioPlus Program – To eradicate polio from the World by 2018
● Humanitarian Programs which include:
▪ District Simplified Grants for local, national and International projects
▪ District Global Grants for International projects in one of the six areas of focus
▪ RI Global grants for International projects in one of the six areas of focus
● Education Programs
▪ Rotary Foundation Scholarships
▪ Rotary Centres for International Studies in Peace and Conflict Resolution
▪ Vocational Training Teams
While it is recommend that "Every Rotarian” make a contribution to the Foundation “Every Year” contributions are
completely voluntary. “OUR” Foundation is entirely reliant upon donations from those of us who care, and who seek a
better world. If we believe in these ideals surely “OUR” Foundation deserves support as our preferred charity.
Donations are tax deductible through the Australian Rotary Foundation Trust.
The Rotary International Board and the Trustees of The Rotary Foundation have agreed to observe The Rotary
Foundation Month each November.
During this month, clubs are urged to devote at least one club program to the Foundation.
As The Rotary Foundation Chairman in Rotary District 9650, I am encouraging all clubs to invite a Guest Speaker to
address your club (or group of clubs) about The Rotary Foundation programs and its funding process.
Whilst other PDG‘s, the Assistant Governors and myself will be available to speak at clubs, this does not exclude
other Rotarians or members of your community affected by Polio from being invited to speak on
The Rotary Foundation.

Polio Movie Night
After a lot of angst we can now release the information on the movie that we have negotiated
for our Fundraising event next February. Please see the attached PowerPoint presentation
for all the details. We would love to increase the funds that were raised this year and top the
$100k mark. Could all Clubs please support this event? Information will come to your Cluster
from your Assistant Governor.
The Rotary Foundation Grants Program
On behalf of the Trustees, thank you for participating in The Rotary Foundation (TRF) grants programs to serve
communities in need. This is an update on the world reporting analysis conducted in November 2014. The analysis
is performed on a quarterly basis to track each district’s compliance with reporting requirements for Rotary
Foundation grant projects.
I am happy to inform you that District 9650 was 100% up-to-date with reporting requirements for grants sponsored
by the district and its clubs as of the November 2014 analysis. The Trustees rely on district leaders to ensure that
stewardship guidelines are being upheld worldwide and they thank you for your efforts. We recognize the hard
work involved to maintain this level of compliance and encourage your district and its clubs to continue your good
work.
At the time the analysis was conducted, District 9650 had 4 grants in paid, funded, and reported status.

From the Whoopi Whisper with thanks from Woolgoolga Rotary Club
The Rotary Friendship Exchange team visitors from Poland will be in Woolgoolga on the nights of Sun 16 and Mon
17 November, and will be at our meeting. They will probably do a presentation. It will be a great opportunity to
meet and get to know them a little. The interests of the Polish RFE team include medicine, new technologies,
speech therapy, snorkelling, travel, seafood, manufacturing, engineering, architecture, art, concerts, golf and
hunting. Ages range from 52 to 65.
SUNDAY WELCOME FUNCTION FOR POLISH VISITORS
The night before (Sun 16th) Bronwyn and Rod McKenzie will be hosting a get together for our visitors and their
hosts at their new home in Mullaway. Members and partners are invited to come and say hello and enjoy a
barbeque/buffet meal. BYO drinks.
LAST MEETING (27 Oct) PUBLIC SPEAKING CONTEST
Cheyenne Hart won the club round of the Public Speaking contest, and subsequently learned that, given the lack of
other contenders, in doing so she had also won the Cluster round! Her talk focused on the unfairness of
stereotyping, pointing out how difficult it is to find a balance that does not involve prejudice & judgement based on
unwarranted stereotyping.
Patrick Mullan came along as an interested spectator, but was persuaded to compete with an impromptu talk on
the Surf Life Saving movement and its importance for the community and in his own life, being currently President
of the Woolgoolga Junior Club. Patrick is a champion debater, and we look forward to him competing again in the
Public Speaking in 2015.
DONATION NEWS / WHAT IS EBOLA? (PRESENTATION AT LAST MEETING)
The club is donating $1000 from our November auction to Rotary programs to end the Ebola outbreak. This will be
sent to the Rotary Club of Monrovia, Liberia, toward their global campaign to raise US$100,000 for basic needs such
as gloves, masks, plastic buckets with spouts for hand-washing, PVC covered mattresses; rubber rain boots for
health care workers; fuel coupons for Ebola response vehicles; soap; bed sheets and mattress covers; tarpaulin for
temporary hospital waiting area; clean water; medicines & food for patients. At the 27 Oct meeting, David Fayle
gave an overview of What is Ebola? A viral disease, often causing haemorrhagic fever (dangerous bleeding, internal
& external, leading to multiple organ failure). There is a high risk of death in those infected (50%). Early symptoms
include diarrhoea & vomiting; these fluids + blood are the means for human-human transmission, & effective
isolation is crucial for halting epidemics. Ebola is not a particularly effective epidemic agent because it is so lethal.
Strengthening the health infrastructure, & supporting & sustaining the deployment of government health workers
throughout these outbreak areas are greatly needed. One key message was to keep Ebola in perspective with other
Diseases, for example malaria, which causes over 200 times more annual deaths than Ebola.
