GAME 2 • LOYOLA CHICAGO AT MARQUETTE • NOV. 17, 2014
2014-15 MArquette WoMeN’S BASKetBAll
opening Streak
The Golden Eagles opened the 2014-15 campaign on Saturday against Green Bay at the
Al McGuire Center.
Marquette dropped its first season opener
since the 2001 season and is now 25-15 alltime in season openers.
Series history
This is the 18th all-time meeting between
Marquette and Loyola Chicago. MU owns a
narrow 9-8 advantage over the Ramblers, but
has won the last eight straight contests. In the
most recent meeting, December 2012, Arlesia
Morse paved the way with 25 points and 10
boards for the Golden Eagles.

BIG EAST women’s basketball teams are
doing their part to help the Lauren Hill
Tribute Fund of The Cure Starts Now
Foundation reach its $100,000 goal. All 10
league teams have selected a home game in
which a portion of their ticket revenue will
be donated directly to the Lauren Hill
Tribute Fund, which, to date, has raised
nearly $84,000.
Marquette selected its homeopener and
will donate a portion from every ticket sold
Saturday against Green Bay.
The Cure Starts Now raises money for
research dedicated to finding a cure for
brainstem glioma. Lauren Hill, a college basketball player at Mount St. Joseph University
in Cincinnati, Ohio, was diagnosed with the
inoperable tumor nearly a year ago.
Morse code
Senior Arlesia Morse got off to a slow start
against Green Bay, but turned in 14 second-half
points to finish with a game-high 16 points
overall. It was the ninth-highest point output in
the BIG EAST this weekend. The senior was a
perfect 8-8 from the free throw line.
Morse is the BIG EAST’s third all-time leading
scorer with 1,129 career points, which is 20th in
MU history.
Freshmen Phenoms
Freshmen Kenisha Bell and Tia Elbert earned
a spot in the starting lineup in their collegiate debuts. The duo are the first freshmen
to start for MU since the 2011-12 season
when Arlesia Morse and Api Ojulu started in
their freshmen debuts.
Bell scored 15 points in her debut,
which was the 11th-best in the league this
weekend. Elbert totaled three points in her
debut.
Morse earns Preseason honors
Senior Arlesia Morse was selected to the
Preseason All-BIG EAST squad. The Flint, Mich.
native is MU’s leading returning scorer after
averaging 11.5 points last year. Morse came off
the bench in 32 of the Golden Eagles’ 33 games
last season and will be looked at for leadership
on the court.
Marquette Picked 7th in BiG eASt Poll
Marquette was picked to finish seventh in
the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches Poll, two
points behind sixth-place Providence. The
Golden Eagles lose three starters from last
year’s squad that finished fifth in league play
and advanced to the second round of the
WNIT.
Senior leadership
Arlesia Morse, Apiew Ojulu and Cristina
Bigica, three of Marquette’s biggest returning contributors, combined to shoot better
than 43 percent from the field in 2013-14.
The senior trio ranked third, fifth and sixth in
scoring for the Golden Eagles, respectively,
and each player averaged more than 22 minutes per game last season.
Classmate Chelsie Butler will also pick up
significant minutes in the paint for MU this
year.
Familiar Faces
MU’s experienced frontcourt of Apiew Ojulu
(senior), Chelsie Butler (senior) and Lauren
Tibbs (redshirt junior) have combined for
230 appearances and 90 starts since the
beginning of the 2011- 12 season.
Welcome to Marquette
Marquette will rely on four freshmen to log
significant minutes this season. Kenisha Bell,
Tia Elbert, Hannah Grim and Shantelle
Valentine will don the Blue and Gold for the
first time against Green Bay. The Golden
Eagles will also receive help from redshirt
freshman JeTaun Rouse later this season.
Rouse sat out last year due to injury.

GAME 2 • LOYOLA CHICAGO AT MARQUETTE • NOV. 17, 2014
will travel to Wake Forest, Duke, Auburn
and Wisconsin prior to beginning BIG EAST
play.
Last season MU was 11-5 on its home
court.
challenging Schedule
The Golden Eagles will face 10 teams that
advanced to the postseason in 2014,
including four NCAA Tournament teams.
MU will have its first test in the homeopener against Green Bay. The Phoenix
won the Horizon League regular season
title for the 16th straight season last year,
but earned a WNIT berth after falling in
the Horizon League Tournament.
Marquette will face its first ranked
opponent on Nov. 23 when it travels to
No. 7 Duke.
change of Pace
Marquette scored 73.3 points per game
last season, which was the second best
average in the BIG EAST. It was the team’s
highest per-game scoring output since the
Golden Eagles averaged 80.3 points per
game in 1994-95.
That offensive effort will carry over to
head coach Carolyn Kieger’s new system
of fast-paced, up-tempo, “run-and-gun”
basketball.

year-round HD digital channel via FOX
Sports' mobile application, FOX Sports GO.
BEDN is offering free live streaming of 80100 sporting events annually, in addition
to the authenticated live streaming of BIG

Including the expansive television
schedule, BIG EAST teams will have over
80 regular-season games available to a
national audience via FOX Sports 1, FOX
Sports 2, FOX Sports GO, CBS Sports and
ESPN.
The BIG EAST Digital Network will have
its own branded channel within FOX
Sports GO, the mobile app that provides
live streaming video of FOX Sports content
at home or on-the-go. The BIG EAST is the
first collegiate conference to be hosted on
the network's mobile platform.
Solid From the charity Stripe
MU registered the highest free throw percentage in the BIG EAST last season (.741)
and were ranked No. 44 in the nation in
that statistic. The excellent performance
from the line was not a result of a small
sample size, either, as their 783 free throw
attempts were also the most in the conference.
Pounding the Glass
MU was tenacious on the backboards in
2013-14, registering a rebound margin of
+13.0 per game. That was the second best
mark in all of college basketball last season and was almost five rebounds better

1st Season
Career Record: 0-1
Former Marquette University women's
basketball standout Carolyn Kieger
became the program's fifth head coach on
May 1, 2014.
Kieger made her collegiate head coaching
debut on Nov. 15, 2014 when Marquette
hosted Green Bay in the 2014-15 season
opener.
"When
Carolyn
graduated
from
Marquette we all knew she would be successful at any profession she chose to pursue," former Interim Athletic Director Bill
Cords said. "Fortunately for all of us, her
chosen profession was coaching women's
basketball.
"Carolyn is a dynamic person, both on and
off the court, who has been able to transition her fierce competitiveness and striving for excellence as a player to a successful coaching career. She has been able to
instill those qualities into the players she
has coached."
Kieger has spent the past six seasons as
the assistant coach at the University of
Miami. She was the Director of
Operations for the Golden Eagles during
the 2007-08 season and spent a year at
Miami as the coordinator of basketball
operations from 2006-07.
"As one of Marquette's most successful
women's basketball players of all time,
Carolyn knows what it takes to succeed
both on and off the court," Former

said. "Carolyn expects excellence from
herself, her coaching staff and her players,
and her experience coaching in three
NCAA postseason appearances will be
critical to helping Marquette reach new
heights of success. We're thrilled to welcome Carolyn back to campus and look
forward to great things to come for our
women's basketball program."
While at Miami, Kieger was primarily
responsible for guard development. She
focused a lot of attention on refining the
skills of the Hurricanes' star guard,
Shenise Johnson, who earned All-America
and ACC Player of the Year honors in
2010-11, while the squad was crowned
ACC regular season champions. She also
saw guard Riquna Williams earn All-ACC
First Team accolades and finish as the ACC
scoring leader with 21.7 points per game.
"Carolyn Kieger is an exceptional person
with an extraordinary ability to get the
most out of everyone she coaches and
Marquette has made an amazing hire,"
Miami head coach Katie Meier said.
"Carolyn leads with integrity and her
value system permeates all of her decisions. She was an integral part of our success here at Miami, and her impact on this
program was immense. I am grateful for
the time I had with her here at Miami, and
know she is more than ready to lead
Marquette. Her fire and passion for her
alma mater is 100 percent authentic and it
will resonate within (the Marquette) community. I couldn't be more proud of her
and am so happy she is pursuing her
dream."
four-year starter, three-year captain and
is MU's all-time assists leader. She is the
only player in program history with at
least 1,200 career points, 400 career
rebounds and 600 assists. For her career,
Kieger averaged 10.3 points per game and
was a second team All-BIG EAST selection
for the 2005-06 season, as well as, a second team All-Conference USA selection
for the 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons.
During her senior campaign, she was a
finalist for the Nancy Lieberman Award,
given to the nation's top point guard.
In addition to her athletic accomplishments, Kieger received the BIG EAST
Conference's Sportsmanship award as a
senior.
A native of Roseville, Minn., Kieger graduated Cum Laude from Marquette
University with a bachelor's degree in
broadcasting and electronic communications in 2006. In 2007, she received the
McCahill Award given to a graduated MU
senior student-athlete who demonstrated
the highest performance in scholarship,
leadership and athletics.
"Carolyn is a rising start in the profession
and we are excited about the future of
Marquette women's basketball under her
leadership," Cords said.
