games against two nationally ranked
NCAA Division II opponents: Indiana, Pa. (72-58) and Philadelphia
University (82-71). With its backto-back exhibition wins, Pitt has
now won 32 consecutive exhibition
games dating back to a Nov. 10, 1998
loss to Marathon Oil. Head Coach
Jamie Dixon is a perfect 24-0 in exhibition games since he became head
coach in 2003-04 and the Panthers
improved to 22-0 in exhibition contests since the NCAA cleared NCAA
Division II and III schools for competition. Combining Pitt’s two ex-
hibition games, the Panthers averaged 77.0 points per game and
outrebounded their two opponents
by a plus-11.5 margin. Pitt also shot
48.7 percent (56-115) from the floor,
hit 15 3-pointers and converted 75
percent (27-36) of its free throw
attempts. Michael Young led the
Panthers in both scoring (22.5 ppg.)
and rebounding (9.0 rpg.) with two
20-plus point performances, Durand
Johnson averaged 13.0 points and
hit five 3-pointers, James Robinson
averaged 11.0 points and 7.0 assists
per game and Chris Jones totaled 10.0
ppg.
Niagara returns two starters
from a 7-26 team. The Purple Eagles,
coached by second-year coach Chris
Casey, return forward Ramone
Snowden (8.1 ppg./5.5 rpg. in 201314) and guard Wesley Myers (6.7 ppg.
in 2013-14). Pitt and Niagara meet
for the fourth time in series history
as the Purple Eagles hold a 2-1 advantage in the series.
Pitt returns three starters–senior
off guard Cameron Wright, point
guard Robinson and power forward
Young – and eight of its top 10 scor-
ers from a 2013-14 team that finished 26-10 overall, 11-7 and in fifth
place in its first year in the ACC and
earned a 12th NCAA Tournament
appearance in the last 13 seasons.
In mid-October, Pitt was picked
by Atlantic Coast Conference media
members to finish sixth among 15
schools in its annual preseason poll.
Pitt has won 118 of its last 166
overall games, 123 of its last 171,
267 of its last 357 contests, 118 of
its last 179 league regular season
games and 154 of its last 167 nonconference games.

Last year, Young became the
fourth freshman in school history to
start 100 percent of his freshman
contests. In 36 starts, Young averaged 6.0 points and 4.1 rebounds per
game. Young reached double figure
scoring in five games on the year.
He also became just the 14th alltime freshman first game opening day
starter at Pitt since freshmen were
sanctioned to compete by the NCAA
in 1972-73.
Pitt begins its 13th regular season in the Petersen Events Center
with a 193-27 all-time record and
.877 winning percentage. The .877
winning percentage ranks among the
nation’s best homecourt records over
the last 12 years (see chart page 8).
Pitt has won 84 of its last 108
league home games. At home, Pitt
has won 68 of its last 84 games, 46
of its last 62 games against conference regular season opponents, 99
of its last 116 overall games and recently completed home win streaks
of 20 games (Jan. 28, 2010-Jan. 24,
2011) and 15 games (Feb. 29, 2012Dec. 31, 2012). The 20-game win
streak ranks as the fourth longest
streak of its kind in school history.
Pitt is 79-24 vs. league regular
season opponents at the Petersen
Events Center (4-5 vs. ACC, 75-19
vs. Big East). In addition, Pitt recently completed a 58-game win
streak against non-conference opponents at home (Nov. 19, 2005-Nov.
16, 2011).
Pitt also owns an impressive 1103 record vs. non-conference opponents in the Petersen Events Center
and has claimed 131 of its last 135
home games against regular season
non-conference opponents. Pitt’s
three non-conference losses at the
PEC are to Bucknell (Jan. 2, 2005),
Long Beach State (Nov. 16, 2011)
and Wagner (Dec. 23, 2011).

DECADE-PLUS OF EXCELLENCE
Over the last 13 years, Pitt has
proven to be the winningest basketball program in the Big East Conference and one of the top-5 winningest
programs nationally. In the last 13
seasons, from 2001-14, Pitt has continued to among the nation’s top

wins (152-70), league championships
(six) and NCAA Tournament appearances (12).
When comparing Pitt’s success

the only former Big East Conference

one of only three programs nationwide to advance to the NCAA Tournament and win 20 overall games and
10 league games in a 10-year span
from 2001-11. Those programs include Gonzaga, Kansas and Pitt.
Since 2001, Pitt has now earned
12 NCAA Tournament berths. During that span, Pitt is one of only
seven schools nationwide and one of
two ACC programs to advance to the
NCAA Tournament in at least 12 of
the last 13 seasons. Those schools include Duke, Gonzaga, Kansas, Michigan State, Texas, Wisconsin and Pitt.
Pitt has advanced to NCAA
Sweet Sixteen play in five of the last
13 seasons. Only 11 programs nationally (Duke-9, Kansas-9, Michigan
State 8, Connecticut-7, Arizona-7,
Syracuse-6, North Carolina-6, Wisconsin-6, Kentucky-6, Florida-6 and
Louisville-6) have surpassed that accomplishment, while three other programs have matched it. Pitt also ranks
among national leaders in NCAA

DIXON: ONE OF FASTEST ALL-TIME
TO 200 COACHING WINS; FAST
APPROACHING 300 WINS
With a 61-46 victory over American on Dec. 22, 2010, Dixon
reached the 200-career victory plateau. Dixon tied the NCAA Division I record for quickest to 200 wins
in only eight seasons, matching the
record held by Gonzaga’s Mark Few
and Kansas’ Roy Williams. He ranks
No. 13 among the all-time NCAA
Division I coaches in quickest to 200
victories in regards to total games
(see charts on page 4) and tied the
NCAA record in fastest to 200 career wins by years (8). He also became the fastest coach in school history to reach the 200-win plateau
and only the second coach to reach
that mark in school history (see chart
on page 6). The only other coach in
school history to win over 200 games
is H.C. “Doc” Carlson, who recorded
a 367-247 record over 31 years from
1922-53.
In addition, Dixon has guided
Pitt to three combined Big East titles
(2003-04 regular season, 2008 tournament and 2010-11 regular season),
two No. 1 seeds upon entering the
NCAA Tour nament (2009 and

Pitt’s 23-point loss to Rutgers on
Jan. 11, 2012 was its largest Big East
regular season loss since Dixon became head coach.
Amazingly, Dixon has dropped
36 of his 96 career games by four
points or less and 70 of his 96 losses
by fewer than 10 points (73 percent).
DIXON AND NON-CONFERENCE
SUCCESS
Combining his non-conference
games, Dixon owns a 132-12 overall record vs. non-conference foes
(.917 winning percentage). Dixon
won 45 consecutive games in November and December before dropping a contest at No. 7 Wisconsin on
Dec. 16, 2006. He won his first 35
November games until a loss to No.
3 Texas in 2009.
UNDER 70 DEFENSIVE MENTALITY
Defense has been a key ingredient to Pitt’s success over the last 14
seasons. Following are some defensive notes:
• In 2013-14, Pitt held 19 of its
36 opponents under 60 points,
26 of 36 below 70 points and
has yielded 41.2 percent shooting.
• In 2012-13, Pitt held 19 of its
33 opponents to 60 points or less
and 29 of its 33 foes to 70 points
or less. Against Pitt, opponents
averaged a school-record low
56.0 points per game and shot
just 39.2 percent (627-1598)
from the floor.
• Since Jamie Dixon became head
coach in 2003-04, Pitt has held
146 of its 191 conference regular season opponents to 70 points
or less.
• Additionally, since Jamie Dixon
became head coach, Pitt has held
303 of its 384 opponents to 70
points or less. Pitt’s record is 28896 during that span.
• Over the last 12 seasons under
Dixon, Pitt has posted 10 of the
top-12 best defensive seasons in
school history. That achievement
has made it the best defensive
era in school and Big East Conference history.
• When holding opponents to 60
points or less, Pitt is 203-16 over
the last 13 years:
