This is the first calendar prepared by your 2014-15 committee. We hope members approve
of the format, but more especially the destinations, frequency and duration of the various
cruises. We shall attempt to diligently monitor the attendances at functions during the
season, and eliminate from future calendars those cruises that are not so popular. Some
past recommendations indicated one day cruise and one overnight cruise per month,
except in July and August. It requires at least 2½ to 3 hours to travel from Hobart to the
top of D’Entrecasteaux Channel, so we have all but eliminated day cruises.
Get the good ship out of hiding and join us for a hopefully enjoyable summer on the water

General Notes for Cruise Coordinators and Skippers
It is recommended that cruise coordinators try to adhere to the following guidelines:
1.
The coordinator will maintain a listening watch from one hour before boats are
scheduled to assemble and throughout the cruise. Skippers are asked to log in with
the coordinator to confirm participation. Unless circumstances are such that 24 hour
listening watch is required, there may be no listening watch one hour after all vessels
are at anchor.
2.
The coordinator will consult with skippers if there is the possibility of a change of
arrangements. The coordinator will make a decision and inform all skippers. These
decisions are in no way binding on skippers.
3.
For radio contact please make initial contact on Channel 16 and switch to Channel
77 for messages and communication. Coordinators will listen on dual watch channels
16 and 77.
4.
Skippers are asked to maintain a dual listening watch on VHF channels 16 and 77,
ensuring the radio can be heard from the cockpit. Ideally, all vessels which have a
SCAN capability radio, should have it set to Channels 16 and 77.
5.
Any early changes, or pre departure day to the publicized cruise program will be
emailed to members. This will be the responsibility of the designated cruise
coordinator, in conjunction with the Vice Commodore.
6.
Cruises without coordinators. Skippers to contact others on VHF Ch. 16 and 77.
7.
Long cruises (In excess of two days). The cruise coordinator shall broadcast to all
CYCT cruise fleet vessels the plans for each day. It is suggested that this schedule be
conducted between 0835 and 0900. If the fleet splits into two main bodies, the
coordinator shall appoint a skipper from the break-away group to act as coordinator.
8.
When boats and crew numbers are required please reply before the RSVP date to
facilitate planning. If late replies are received the cruise might have been cancelled or
amended unnecessarily.
9.
The final decision to continue with any cruise or
to withdraw from any cruise shall always remain
with each skipper.
10. A report for the Albatross. Coordinators are
asked to write a brief article for the Albatross to
be with the editor before the 20th of the month.

radio.
Try to use the lowest HF band that will give clear communications. If unsuccessful, try the
next higher band. A general guide of distances and appropriate bands is shown below, but
remember that HF is affected by atmospheric conditions and the guidelines below are not

Tas Maritime Radio operates HF in the 2, 4, 6 and
8MHz frequency ranges. The table below lists the
distress safety and calling frequencies and working
frequencies for these bands. Tas Maritime Radio has
extended the coverage around Tasmania, and this is
illustrated to the left. As the pink dots on the map
indicate, there's quite a bit of coverage overlap, which
is why TMR ask you to change to different Channels
for skeds (69 for South Sister, 68 for Flinders Island, Mt
Maria and Mt Read, and 67 for Mt Mangana and Elliot
Range). The extreme South is covered by the Channel
82 repeater station on Maatsuyker Island (the yellow
dot shown on the map).

1. Saturday 15th - Sunday 16th November 2014
COMO (Club Organised MONA Outing)

The Cruise: This cruise will excite the Derwent River based vessels and all those looking
forward to a fine dining experience. Ladies, a chance to kick off the boat shoes and pull on
the high heels! This could be treated as a chance to improve your Christmas party skills.
The fleet will rendezvous off the Southern jetty in Montrose Bay around midday. Lunch has
been reserved for 1400. The meal duration will be approximately 2½ hours, which should
provide enough time to return to our boats and move to an overnight anchorage if
necessary.
Anchorage and Conditions: The access to the
area and the anchoring conditions have been
discussed with Michael Roche, skipper of the
MONA-ROMA catamaran and by investigation and
soundings by Lemaris. Basically, North of the
Bowen bridge and to the west is a dock facility.
Once abeam of that head directly to the sea plane
jetty. Lat 420 48.62 S
Long 1470 15.73 E
Once you arrive in the vicinity of the two
pontoons, there is 3+m of water just to the South of the southernmost jetty. Be cautious
of the submerged about 3/4 of the way across the bay to the west. It is marked with two
black balls. To get ashore, the float plane floating pontoon should be used, and accessed
by dinghy. The other jetty will require a 0.9m climb. Please moor on the inside of the
floating pontoon so as not to impede possible float plane activities.
It is suggested that you do not raft together because of the wake from the MONA ROMA
catamaran; but after 1800 and before 0900, you should be OK, as the catamaran ceases
operation for the night. So, if the wind conditions are suitable, you could stay in the bay.

Notes: Please note the club has negotiated a price per head of $75 per person for a three
course meal. This restaurant is known as Source, “a bubble above the hubbub of humanity
below”.

Air Draft City to Montrose Bay
The following overhead clearance restrictions exist within the Port of Hobart:
a)
The centre line of the main navigation span of the Tasman Bridge is 44 metres above
Mean Higher High Water (MHHW).
b)
The overhead clearance of the power cable just south of the Risdon wharf is 42.2
metres above MHHW.
c)
The least height clearance under the navigation span of the Bowen Bridge is 14.6
metres above MHHW.
For those who intend heading to New Norfolk or MONA, item (c) above may be of some
concern. Club members have previously reported that due to the increase in bridge
height to the west of the navigation and closest to shore, the clearance is 17.0 metres at
the apex of the bridge arch and the depth is greater than 3 m.

2. Christmas 2014 to New Year 2015
Quarantine Bay 2014 Finale

The Cruise: This cruise will be at members’ choice and discretion. Most of us have family and
travel commitments during this period, so make your own destination plans but fly the Club
burgee to try to meet with others prior to 31st December.
Location: For those who can make it onto the water, let’s hope for fair weather and
uncluttered anchorages. If you are in the D’Entrecasteaux area, especially Quarantine Bay, all
members and friends are welcome to the Finale barbecue rendezvous for 2014 on December 31st
to see in the New Year.
Anchorage and Conditions: There are good conditions in Quarantine Bay except in S-SE
conditions. The precise location is at the new floating pontoon if weather is amenable. In shallow
waters the bottom is quite sticky, but these days there are permanent moorings in this area. You
can expect about 4-7 m of depth adjacent to the floating pontoon, which will make it easy to get
ashore with celebratory New Year’s Eve thirst quenchers and barbecue items.
Notes: There is a very interesting walk through the Quarantine Station. The walk takes you
past the site of quarantine buildings where saloon and steerage passengers were admitted to the
hospital area - some buildings still stand. Further on past the campsites where soldiers were
quarantined on their return from WWI, the trail takes you to the site of the Quarantine Bay jetty
then up through the bush to the 1919 graves of influenza victims and the remains of an old oven
thought to have been constructed by German prisoners of war who, while detained at the
Quarantine Station, cut firewood for Hobart.

3. Saturday 10th & Sunday 11th January 2015
Great Bay Safety Day and Progressive Dinner

The Cruise: The many anchorages in the Great Bay area will allow us to select a nook or
cranny to anchor overnight. There are
Missionary, Adams, Ford, Little Fancy
and Simpsons Bays. Club officials will
demonstrate the recommended
activation method and storage of
emergency flares. For any members
with out-of-date flares, approval has
been provided by MAST to test fire on
Saturday 10th at 1430 if you wish to
consume your old stock. The club also
has access to an inflatable life-raft (of
dubious condition); it is intended to
activate this and if successful, any
members wishing to attempt the
process of climbing in, fully clothed
and wet, are welcome to do so.
After the safety demonstrations it is
planned to conduct a progressive
dinner. The venue will be in a series
of rafted-up dinghies adjacent to a mother-ship that will distribute the pre-dinner nibbles.
The crews then return to their own vessels for main course, and finally onto Easting Down
for desert and tea or coffee - BYO cup and tipple.
Location: Near the “neck” connecting North and South Bruny Island, in D’Entrecasteaux
Channel
Anchorage and Conditions: All the anchorages have good holding in sand or mud. The
anchorage for this cruise will be chosen on the Saturday, subject to weather conditions.

4. Friday 23rd to Monday 26th January 2015
Australia Day Weekend Blackout Cruise

The Cruise: We have used the term “blackout” in the cruise title because the intention is
to travel to Southport on the first evening of the cruise. We will meet in the
D’Entrecasteaux Channel adjacent to Kettering in the early evening of the 23rd and cruise to
Southport. This means the last hour or so of the cruise will be after nightfall. This will
provide the experienced the opportunity to re-sharpen their night sailing skills, and enable
those who wish to experience night travel for the first time to travel in company.
Your cruise coordinator will select a location for a barbecue ashore.
Location: The plan is to go to the turn-around point at Recherche Bay prior to heading
north again. The cruise coordinator will communicate the general plan as the weekend
approaches and the weather is known.
Anchorages and Conditions: The first evening in Southport will most likely be at the
Deep Hole, adjacent to the Ida Bay rail stop to the south of Pelican Island. There is good
holding in hard sand close to the shoreline. Recherche Bay, where the fleet should arrive
on Saturday 24th, has superb anchorages at Cockle Creek, The Coal Bins and at the Pigsties.
Notes: Did you know that the main commercial activity in the latter part of the 19 th
century and into the early 20th century was coal mining, mostly based around the township
of Catamaran? The Catamaran Coal Company employed the barque James Craig as a coal
hulk there.

5. Saturday 14th - Sunday 15th February 2015
A “Stinking” Cruise
430 26.5’ S : 1470 10.7’ E
The Cruise: Departure from the Kettering area at around 0930 on Saturday 14 th should
place most vessels in the vicinity of Stinking Beach by lunchtime. Events for the children,
such as swimming races (PFDs on to get the kids used to the buoyancy), dinghy rowing
races and beach events and an evening barbecue are all subject to weather.
Location: Stinking Beach, Great Taylors Bay. This little bay is to the SE of Mickeys Bay
and offers good protection in NE to NW conditions. It is a pristine location and very safe
for children. At the SE end of the beach is a small inlet behind a reef to anchor dinghies
and go ashore.
Anchorage and Conditions: Depending on overnight wind conditions, anchorages at
Mickeys, South Tinpot or Lighthouse Bay will afford a good restful night. At the northern
end of Stinking Beach the reef extends 50-70m from shore so your anchor may not dig in!
Notes: Lt John Hayes, the explorer of the Derwent River, was the first English explorer to
give the Bay something like its current name in 1793. He named it Ray Taylors Bay.
D’Entrecasteaux had earlier named Partridge Island “Île aux Perdrix” (perhaps you can
guess its translation, though Bruni was mistaken). Partridge, of 103 hectares, is one of the
islands known as The Partridge Group, which includes Arch Rock and those in Port
Esperance (Dover).

6. Saturday 28th February – Sunday 1st March 2015
Coningham for the Kids

Location: At the Southern end of Northwest Bay (the Northern entrance to
D’Entrecasteaux Channel).
The Cruise: The intention is for boats to make
their own way to Coningham Beach on Saturday
28th, arriving around midday. Events for the
children, such as swimming races (PFDs on, to
get the kids used to the buoyancy), dinghy
rowing races and beach events, while the adults
stoke up the fire for a barbecue (all subject to
weather).
Anchorage and Conditions: The fleet may gather at Killora Bay or Snug Beach to take
cover from any prevailing wind conditions. Those intending to stay overnight may seek the
security of the Barnes Bay area. The cruise coordinator will advise the intended plans on
Saturday morning.

7. Friday 6th - Monday 9th March 2015
CYGNET - Break Out the Signal Flags
430 10.6’ S : 1470 05.0 E
Location: Cygnet must be near the epicentre of Tasmanian salmon farming. Cygnet Bay
is in the lower reaches of the Huon River on the northern shore. Most CYCT boats will
travel south from Hobart or Kettering, down D’Entrecasteaux Channel, then turn west at
Gordon to enter the Huon Estuary. There is the Arch Rock to clear, just prior to Huon Island
and if you pass this obstruction to the north, be wary of Ninepin Point. The reef is quite a
distance off-shore.
The Cruise: The Cygnet Yacht Club conducts their annual regatta on the March long
weekend. During the 2014 regatta, over 60 yachts from various clubs enjoyed a wonderful
weather weekend and the famous Cygnet Yacht Club barbecue ashore, conducted on the
Saturday evening. The more adventurous could depart on Friday 6th and meet for dinner in
Cygnet with friends and fellow cruisers.
Anchorage and Conditions: There is excellent anchorage (but be prepared to wash down
your anchor chain upon retrieval) in all but S-SE conditions. If the weather turns for the
worse there is a good anchorage at Copper Alley Bay only a short distance away, but yachts
with more than 2m draft should be cautious.
The N and NE areas of Port Cygnet Bay are very shallow, and unless you are in a boat with
less than 1m draft, it is recommended you avoid this zone.
History: The bay on which Cygnet sits was named Port des Cygnes (Port of Swans) by
French navigator Bruni D'Entrecasteaux in 1793, because he observed a large number of
swans in the area. The first European settler in the district was William Nichols in 1834.
His grandson, John Wilson, established a shipbuilding business at what is now known as
Port Cygnet. In 1840 the township of Port Cygnet was surveyed. The Post Office opened
on 1 January 1854.

8. Friday 20th - Sunday 29th March 2015
Port Davey and Bathurst Harbour – The Long One
430 19.6’ S : 1450 59.1’ E
Location: The sailing is approximately 65 NM from Recherche Bay, around the South
coast of Tasmania to the protection inside Breaksea Islands, which lie at the entrance to
Bathurst Channel. The area provides an all-weather harbour. There is a location
somewhere within the complex of bays and channels to hide from any weather.
The Cruise: Depart from the Kettering area at your own convenience, with the intention
to arrive at Recherche Bay the first evening. Due to robust conditions that can occur
around Tasmania’s SW corner, the plan will be to lay over at Recherche until a suitable
weather window occurs. Depending upon conditions, 8-12 hours of travel can be expected
during the cruise to the entrance of Bathurst Channel.
Once you arrive, be prepared to possibly stay for longer than the planned seven or so days,
or to depart much sooner. This situation could occur if the wrong weather conditions
arrive. Ideally, a minimum of several days is required to enjoy the sights and various bays
of the area.
Barbecues ashore on most days are intended, but remember it is a National Park and no
open fires are permitted (gas barbecues only). The area is truly remarkable. It is only
accessible by boat, aeroplane or on foot. You can drift downstream in your dinghy along
the Davey River Gorge, lie overnight in Moulters Inlet, view the sea eagles , feel the stark

white quartz gravel between your toes, discover the remains of Deny King’s tin mine
workings and, with patience, view the endangered orange
bellied parrot (Neophema Chrysogaster).
Notes: Keep in mind that VHF radio communication is
unlikely to be available in most areas of the harbour.
There is a VHF repeater on Maatsuyker Island (Channel
82), but your best insurance is to have or be with another
boat with HF radio, if you wish to keep in touch with the
daily weather forecasts.
Fresh drinking water: There are water tanks at Clayton’s Corner, but for reference, during
the summer of 2014, an unthinking visitor neglected to securely
shut the supply valve and the tanks were drained!
PLEASE NOTE: This cruise can easily be subject to extreme
weather conditions. The chance of not proceeding beyond
Recherche Bay, or being caught by weather on the West Coast is
reasonably high. Be prepared for either an aborted trip around the
south coast or have a few days up your sleeve for the return
journey.

9. Friday 3rd - Monday 6th April 2015
Bruny Island Easter Circumnavigation
430 20.4’ S : 1470 00.7’ E
Location: A Bruny Island circumnavigation can present quite a challenge. The plan is for
members to make their own way to Port Esperance and meet in the vicinity of Rabbit
Island on Friday 3rd. Many members have enjoyed a barbecue ashore on this small island,
and if the weather is kind that will be our goal. Whilst ashore the weather conditions for
the coming few days will be discussed and a plan to proceed or go elsewhere will be
formulated, depending upon the forecast.
The Cruise: If the cruise proceeds, it is hoped to spend the second night at Cloudy Bay in
Cloudy Corner (watch out for the reef to the north of Blue Devil Rock). The towering cliffs
that surround this anchorage have seen many a massive storm attempt to ravage its
toehold, with little impact. The distance from Rabbit Island to Cloudy Corner is about 21
NM, a good half day cruise. From there to the south end of Adventure Bay is a further 22
miles, so another half day of travel can be expected. If conditions are good, then another
barbecue will be convened.
Anchorage and Conditions: At Rabbit Island, it is possible to anchor on the east side and
on the WNW side. However, for both locations be prepared to wash your chain. The mud
is sticky and black. For both Cloudy Corner and Adventure Bay expect clean hard sand. At
Adventure Bay, be wary of anchoring at Quiet Corner. There are stands of rock that can
cause you to wrap around with your chain if the wind shifts. I know, I have had it happen!

10. Saturday 18th - Sunday 19th April 2015
New Norfolk - Derwent Valley Festival

Location: The township of New Norfolk is situated on the SW shore of that portion of
the Derwent River, approximately 16 nautical miles up-river from Hobart.
The Cruise: The experience of the kaleidoscope of colour exhibited by the deciduous
trees along the banks of the Derwent is something that tourists travel to our Island to
enjoy. This, coupled with the Derwent Valley Festival, will provide a very enjoyable
weekend.
The Festival provides something for the whole family to enjoy. Interactive games for
children, animals, a smorgasbord of food and wine, craft stalls, five stages of music,
together with businesses and community groups showcasing what’s available in the
Derwent Valley. Last year over 15,000 patrons attended. We will be tied up immediately
next to the festivities along the Esplanade.
Anchorage and Conditions: Boats will raft alongside one of three jetties. The cruise
coordinator will supervise the order in which the fleet rafts-up. The sequence will be
arranged immediately prior to the fleet passing under the Bridgwater lift span, with the
larger boats inshore, progressing to the small boats on the outside.
Trying to get your anchor to set in the bottom in this area can be difficult, due to the
normally rapidly flowing water scouring the bottom. A mile or so downstream, near the
Norske Skog paper mill, anchoring is
not a problem.
Notes: The low tide occurs in Hobart
at 1330 on Saturday 18th. To take
advantage of the flood tide to help
push boats up the river and enable
the D’Entrecastaux boats to arrive at
the meeting area off the Regatta
Ground without difficulty, a midday
start will occur. Remember not to use
the main or adjacent navigation spans on the Tasman Bridge. The Bowen Bridge has 14.6
of air draft a LMWS. Do you know how tall your stick is? Now is the time to check.
High tide on Sunday is at 0854 in Hobart and about 0910 at New Norfolk. If you depart
New Norfolk by 1200, you will still have the benefit of three hours of current assistance,
and time enough to enjoy the festivities ashore on Sunday.
Protocol: Remember, it is good manners to pass in front of your neighbours’ mast when
transiting ashore, unless invited to do otherwise.

The Donald Sutherland and Anzac Memorial Cruise

Location: Northern parts of the D’Entrecasteaux Channel, starting near Kettering
The Cruise: Donald Sutherland was the first Commodore of the Cruising Yacht Club of
Tasmania and this annual Memorial Cruise commemorates his leadership and contribution
to the fledgling Club. Donald was passionate about the Club and an avid racing sailor. It
has been said that two yachts in sight of each other is actually a race. Well this event will
not be a race, but a test of your knowledge of your own vessel. The precise course will be
advised the day prior to the event, but generally expect Kettering and Barnes Bay to be
among the locations visited. Upon completion of the event a location for a shore based
barbecue and overnight anchorage will be selected to enable crews to swap bragging
rights.
While some basic navigation is involved, the event is largely a social occasion, designed to
be fun and enjoyable. There will be plenty of
activity for all on board.
Assembly Time: Be in the vicinity of Little
Oyster Bay (Kettering) by 1030. Contact by the
cruise coordinator will be made at 1035 and the
start times for each vessel will be announced.
Event instructions, the starting line location and
other details will be posted in the Albatross and
via emails just prior to the weekend of the
cruise.
Requirements: A circuitous course will be set,
and berthing, disembarking and embarking of a
crew member will be part of the event.
Consequently, any competing vessel will require
at least two crew members.
Historical Note: The original constitution was
formulated by the Club's first Public Officers,

Ackroyd
and
Donald Sutherland. It was then registered with
the Commissioner for Corporate Affairs, before
being presented to the first meeting in May 1975.

Sykes Cove Smoke House: CYCT 40th Birthday Dinner

The Cruise: This cruise is relatively close to home
with tranquil anchorages in protected bays. It will be
a celebration of the 40th anniversary of the founding
of the CYCT. The plan will be to attend a dinner at the
speciality Bruny Island Smoke House restaurant on
Saturday evening, followed by a barbecue ashore in
the Barnes Bay area on Sunday. It’s the 40th
Anniversary of the founding of the CYCT (9th May
1975). Dress your boat up for the occasion.
Reservations for the Bruny Island Smoke House dinner are an absolute necessity. All RSVP
to Vice Commodore [email protected] by April 30th by 1700.
Anchorage and Conditions: There is excellent anchoring in Sykes Cove for a significant
number of boats in most conditions, except the NW to NE quadrant. If the conditions are
NW to N then Alexanders will provide good anchoring, but the walk to the Smoke House
will change from 10 minutes to 20-25 minutes. Plan to meet ashore at the Smoke House
terrace on Saturday night at 1730.

Notes: During the dinner at the Smoke House you can expect a touch of indulgence.
They won seven medals in 2011 and two medals in 2013 at the Tasmanian Fine Food
Awards. The Bruny Island Smokehouse and Wine Bar has expanded to meet the high
demand for their Bruny Island produce. Their focus is still very much on the range of
premium smoked produce. For those who elect to travel by road, it is only 3km from the

Women on Boats - No High Heels Please!

The Cruise: Departing Saturday 23rd and returning Sunday 24th May.
Anchorage and Conditions: Choosing an anchorage will be part of the exercise and will
be dependent on the conditions on the day. Details will be emailed to participants close to
the date.
Notes: The CYCT's Women on Boats (WoB) group has now been operating for five years
and has grown to a membership of over 65 women. The group aims to give women
enough knowledge to feel confident on the water and to do so in a friendly, all-female
environment.
WoBs have learnt about everything from anchors to propellers - and all areas of the boat in
between. They have attended one-day diesel engine workshops, learnt navigation and
rope-work, studied the theory of sail and of boat-handling under power, learnt about
toilets and chart-plotters, anchoring techniques and provisioning. To put all this into
practice, the group holds an annual Women-only Weekend afloat.
Cruise Plan: Depending on the weather the fleet will depart about 10.00am Saturday
morning and head off down the Channel, practising sailing and handling under power.
Skills to be trialled include reefing, sail-trimming, using winches, navigating and passage
planning and finally choosing an anchorage and
setting the anchor. There will be ample
opportunity for all to experience handling
under power, experiencing how a boat
reverses, how to turn in a short space, pick up a
mooring, or berth. Numbers are kept low on
each boat so that all can take several turns at
the wheel at each exercise.
Saturday night will be spent at anchor in the
chosen anchorage, sharing a meal and a glass or two of warming gluhwein. More boat
handling on the return voyage on Sunday.
It is hoped that Club members as a whole will encourage the WoBs initiative by making
their boats available to be skippered by experienced female sailors.

Cornelian Bay - Close to Home

Location: Cornelian Bay, North of the Tasman Bridge, Derwent River
The Cruise: This cruise is a casual social event planned to allow crews to enjoy the
spectacle of Hobart. An afternoon only anchorage is planned for Cornelian Bay, with lunch
at the Boathouse Restaurant. If the weather is not accommodating, an alternative
anchorage will be chosen. For two courses, plus tea or coffee, the tariff is $49.0.

Assembly Point and Time: Assemble off
the Regatta Grounds at 1130 and log in
with the radio contact vessel. Cruise in
company to Cornelian Bay or other

under the Tasman Bridge that the three
centre spans are reserved for
commercial shipping and if you have
VHF, keep it tuned to Channel 12 while
navigating in a pilotage area and in the vicinity
of the bridge, or preferably scan 12 and 16.
Additionally, if you see a commercial ship flying
(I have a pilot aboard) make sure their helm
can see you. When you to go ashore at Cornelian Bay, land on the beach near the boat
houses at the southern end.

Huon River Cruise: A Royal Weekend

Location: Huon River - the base for the weekend’s activities will be the Port Huon area.
The Cruise: This cruise will take you well into the Huon River. Plan your arrival at
Kermandie Marina for early afternoon Saturday, or cruise down earlier in the week.
Franklin will be the focus of Sunday’s activities. River excursions may include a trip to
Huonville. Dinners will be held ashore on both nights.
Saturday night’s get-together will be at the Kermandie Hotel. This venue also has
accommodation, so if you can’t make it by boat, or manage to persuade a friend to provide
a bunk aboard, then the shore base may be an alternative.

Notes: This is the cruise of the Queen’s Birthday weekend. Did you know the
Sovereign's birthday was first officially marked in the United Kingdom in 1748? Since then,
the date of the King or Queen's birthday has been determined throughout the British
Empire, and later the Commonwealth, according to either different royal proclamations
issued by the Sovereign or Governor or by statute laws passed by the local Parliament. The
exact date of the celebration today varies from country to country and, except by
coincidence, does not fall on the day of the monarch's actual birthday, that of the present
Queen being 21st April.

Dark MOFO - Constitution Dock

Location: Constitution Dock, Hobart
The Cruise: Gather in Constitution Dock for a single night to enjoy Dark MOFO. The
swing bridge opening will be at 1500. Boats are to assemble in Sullivans Cove at 1430.
On Sunday 21st the bridge is scheduled to open
at 1130.
The club has negotiated the same fee for the
2015 visit, and that was $25.00 per boat.
The Lights: All CYCT vessels are asked to
“dress-up” with a light display, in keeping with
the festivities.
Notes: Dark MOFO in 2013 was a landmark
event for Hobart. The waterfront came alive in
the dead of winter. In 2014 the CYCT had 15
vessels in Constitution Dock. Celebrate the
Winter Solstice in style and join the other city inhabitants in the festival of Dark-Light.

Re-enactment of CYCT Inaugural Cruise

Location: Rosebanks, just to the SE of Alexanders in the mouth of Barnes Bay.
The Cruise: The first reported cruise held by the CYCT was in November 1975. The
precise date is not known, so the committee has taken the liberty of trying to entice you
out of your winter warmth and over to Barnes Bay. The weather in August we all know can
be a problem, both in wind velocity and temperature. However, it is appropriate that the
Club re-enact the first official cruise, so crank up the heater or get into the thermal
underwear!
A 1130 rendezvous at Rosebanks is planned. After pre-lunch drinks and hopefully a
barbecue ashore, the intention is to conclude by 1400 to enable Hobart-based vessels to
return to their home base by nightfall.
Anchorage and Conditions: If the forefathers forty years ago (1975) decided that this was
a good location to anchor, then that speaks well for the probable conditions (a little muddy,
so you may need to wash down upon anchor retrieval).

The Cruise: Gather in Constitution Dock for a single night to help the CYCT celebrate our
40th birthday. The swing bridge opening will be at 1500. Boats should assemble in Sullivans

On Sunday 6th the bridge is scheduled to open at 1130.
Notes: At the time of preparing the Cruising Guide, the venue for dinner had not been
selected. The Club will circulate information on the venue prior to the dinner. The plan
this year is to conduct the Annual General Meeting (AGM) immediately prior to the dinner.
Pre-dinner drinks and nibbles will be aboard a designated boat, (name to be advised) prior
to a leisurely walk to a nearby venue. The berthing of boats in Constitution Dock for the
2014 dinner was not well patronised by CYCT members. The weather conditions, or the
fact that the MOFO cruise was only eight weeks beforehand, may have contributed to the
low numbers. Consequently the committee has moved
the date to September, to spread the functions further
apart, and hopefully assist in improving the weather
conditions. Let’s show the city the CYCT is an active
boating organisation, and turn up at Constitution Dock.
The fee for an overnight stay will be $25.00 per boat for
this event. This relatively low “$” amount may just
eliminate several hundred dollars on “over the 0.05%”
during a car-drive home.

Dock will require a commitment a week ahead of the
event.

Peppermint Bay Dinner High Class/Barbecue Sunday Low Class

Location: Peppermint Bay, D’Entrecasteaux Channel to the South of Kettering.
The Cruise: On Saturday, gather in Peppermint Bay, possibly raft-up at the jetty during
mid-afternoon. During late morning on Sunday a venue that considers the prevailing wind
conditions will be agreed for a barbecue lunch.
Anchorage and Conditions: Anchoring in the Bay to the SW of the jetty is possible. The
water is a little shallow close in and several boats are on permanent moorings off the jetty.
Be wary of the reef to the N of the jetty. It is well marked with a cardinal, but don’t try to
get to the west of this mark. Possibly raft-up at the jetty during mid-afternoon.
Notes: Pre-dinner drinks and nibbles will be aboard a designated boat(s) on Saturday
(name to be advised), prior to a leisurely walk to the renowned Peppermint Bay restaurant.
This is a chance to enjoy first class surroundings then, to bring us back to earth on Sunday,
a barbecue ashore.

20. Thursday 22nd – Sunday 25th October 2015
Shakedown Cruise for 2015-16 - Nubeena
430 6.25’ S : 1470 44.4’ E
Location: Parsons Bay, western shore of Tasman Peninsula, to the east of Wedge
Island.
The Cruise: Use the Royal Hobart Show public holiday to
cruise to Nubeena and check that all your winter
maintenance and repairs are in good shape and functioning
correctly.
Anchorage and Conditions: Good holding in firm sand or
sand/mud, probably accompanied with a fair bit of drift
weed when you pull the anchor. You are, no doubt, aware
of the Club mooring in the bay, but there is sufficient room for easily a dozen or more
boats. Alternative anchorages are up to two hours remote in Fredrick Henry Bay to the
North, and may be announced by the cruise coordinator subject to weather conditions.
Your cruise coordinator will attempt to coordinate a location for a barbecue.
Notes: Nubeena is the local Aboriginal word for crayfish. The settlement at this
locality was originally called Wedge Bay, and was on the opposite side of the bay to the
present town. The remains of what was intended to be a flourishing settlement can be
seen today – a weatherboard brick and stone police headquarters, a walled garden and
the foundations for a hospital. Trenches were dug for the foundations of a number of
houses and streets were formed before orders came through to consolidate all outstations at Port Arthur.
