A fifth generation Conch, Bailey began working in his father’s trade, repairing and restoring tin roofs. His skills were refined and expanded over the next thirty years of carpentry and restoration work on the century plus homes in Key West. This intimate understanding of island architecture and building techniques gave Bailey a passion for the preservation of these grand and no so grande dames of the island. His recollection of the simplicity and joy of old island times guided the use of his skills, and moved the self taught artist in a new direction. Now he salvages and rescues old Dade County Pine, rusting tin and other bits and oddities from renovations. Repurposing these historic bits and pieces, he brings to life the simple beauty of old Key West, painstakingly constructing local homes and landmarks in miniature with every detail crafted only from the appropriate bits and pieces he collects. Tiny porch lights, Key West chickens, detailed porch railings, roofs, miniature screen doors, gutters and downspouts give an aura of reality to these pieces that bids you to look twice. Wood colors are the originally discovered patina, the painted layers brought to life by the artist’s sharp eye and talented hand. Expect that wattage to shine and the swing to fly on Nov. 29 and 30, when remarkable reincarnations of the two crooners step onto the Red Barn Theatre stage in Frank and Dean: We’re Back, Baby! for a very limited two-night engagement. Swing time is 8 p.m. each night and tickets are already in short supply. “This is not a tribute show,” said actor/singer Art Poco, who perfectly recreates the lubricated cool of Dean Martin along with his partner Bob Hoose as the ultra-smooth Sinatra. “It’s a high-level theatrical piece that not only delivers these guys’ music via a sixteenpiece band track, but also brings the men back to life, with their banter and jokes, and the way they interacted with their audiences.” Poco and Hoose’s personal chemistry perfectly mirrors that of Sinatra and Martin’s. Poco says it’s eerie sometimes when they look at one another across the stage. “We’ve studied these men relentlessly,” he said. “Their mannerisms, movements, speech. We constantly watch videos, tapes, and I The cast of “A Swell Party.” has never gone out of style with recordings from Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland and Ella Fitzgerald to Sting, Elvis Costello and Lady Gaga. Some of Cole Porter’s songs in “A Swell Party” will include “Anything Goes,” “I Get A Kick Out Of You,” “Begin The Beguine,” “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” “You Do Something To Me,” “Brush Up Your Shakespeare,” “Night and Day” and many more. “A Swell Party” will feature an amazing cast of musical theater talent: David Black, Laurie Breakwell, Brian Hall, Joy Hawkins, Denis Hyland,10J. We have to make sure we don’t overstylize the songs with our own styles, so we bring ourselves back to them by watching them all the time. We don’t want you to watch us pretending to be Sinatra and Martin. There are also several duets that Martin and Sinatra did in rare dual concerts that are not normally heard. Mixed in among all the great music is the slick, Rat Pack banter the two were famous for, plus a few comic sketches Martin loved doing on his variety show. “I loved the old variety shows as a kid, and Dean’s was the best,” Poco said. “As I got older, somebody said I looked like Dean Martin and I realized I could sound just like him. So I started doing a solo Dean Martin show – corporate things, casinos, special events. Bob was doing the same thing with a Sinatra show, and we were both hired to do a Rat Pack kind of thing in Las Vegas. When we were done that night, we knew we had to do something together – it was just too much fun and sounded too good.” They haven’t stopped since, doing upwards of a hundred shows a year from New York to San Francisco, with several stops in Las Vegas, the town some say the Rat Pack’s entertainment wattage helped build back in the day. “You want to see the Continued on page 15 PARADISE his Friday, on the eve of the Nov. 22, 1963 anniversary of the assassination of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy, there will be a book signing of “The Men At Sylvia’s Door And The ‘Agent’ With Dirty Fingernails” at 4 p.m. in the Florida Keys Community College Library. The recently published book by J. Timothy Gratz and Mark Howell contains new research that caused G. Robert Blakely, Former Chief Counsel and Director of The United States House of Representatives Select Committee on Assassinations (HSCA), to write: “Great information. This is the first time I ever heard it. Wow! We would have done the addition investigation…had we known it.” Published by Absolutely Amazing eBooks, this first book in its new “JFK Assassination Unraveled” series takes a fresh look at two events that are key to understanding the death of a U.S. president more than half a century after the fact. “The Men At Sylvia’s Door And The ‘Agent’ With Dirty Fingernails” offers new insights into the Odio Incident, where someone identified as Lee Harvey Oswald threatened President John F. Kennedy prior to that fateful day T in Dallas … and provides an explanation of the phony secret service men encountered on the Grassy Knoll by a policeman. “Both events have intriguing ties to the Florida Keys,” Tim Gratz said. “And more importantly, they offer proof of a conspiracy to murder the President.” The book was inspired by research that Gratz and Howell conducted for the Key West Citizen. One of their primary sources was Gerald Patrick Hemming, the mysterious mercenary who ran a paramilitary training camp on No Name Key during the Cold War. Tim Gratz will be on hand at the FKCC Library to sign copies of the book and talk about details of the JFK assassination. It is a prelude to a seminar they will be conducting at the college in March. The book signing and accompanying Q and A are open to the public. ◆ 11 4-week Women’s Journal Writing Group starts Dec. 4 o you need a peaceful place to write out your jumbled thoughts or your unspoken dreams? Maziar Bahari has been a frequent guest on Stewart’s T.V. show. “Rosewater,” the title of Stewart’s film, is currently playing at the Tropic Cinema. In 2009, Bahari was arrested by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, supposedly because of a satirical interview he gave on “The Daily Show” about Iran’s presidential election. During his time in Evin Prison, he was tortured and interrogated. Usually blindfolded, the only distinguishing feature of his interrogator was the small of rosewater cologne. Hence, the film’s name. Filmed in Jordan (as a stand-in for Tehran), “Rosewater” stars Mexican actor Gael García Bernal (“A Little Bit of Heaven”) as Bahari. Kim Bodnia is the character known as Rosewater. Being this film is based on true events detailed in Maziar bahari’s memoir “Then They Came for Me: A Family’s Story of Love, Captivity, and Survival,” it’s no spoiler to tell you he was finally released following pressure from Newsweek Magazine, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and his pregnant fiancé. For his release, he was required to pay $300,000 bail, provide a video confession, and promise to spy on a list of Western journalists for the Revolutionary Guard. When he renounced his confession after returning to London, he was tried in absentia and sentenced to thirteen-and-a-half years’ Gael Garcia Bernal in “Rosewater.” imprisonment and 74 lashes. Despite threats to bring him back to Iran “in a bag,” he remains at large and cooperated with Stewart in the making of this movie. Stewart’s use of news footage of a debate between President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and one of his challengers, and video showing the violence against protestors of the contested election results, adds a sense of verisimilitude. But he’s still a first-time director finding his way, despite a little coaching from the sidelines by Hollywood wunderkind J. J. Abrams (“Star Trek,” etc.). Nevertheless, Iran’s State TV has accused Jon Stewart (né Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz) of using Zionist backing for the little $10-million movie. Note: “Rosewater” was fully financed by Oddlot Entertainment, which has given us such movies as “The Way Way Back,” “Ender’s Game,” and “Draft Day”. Stewart was also accused of being a “CIA superspy.” Good material for “The Daily Show.” srhoades@ aol.com Top 10 real names of actresses ere we go again, looking at actors’ real names. [email protected] 398158 ‘Birdman’ soars at the Tropic with Keaton, Norton REVIEWED BY SHIRREL RHOADES Michael Keaton starred in two “Batman” movies, and then dropped out of the franchise to do smaller films. That was over twenty years ago. Now he pops up in a black comedy titled “Birdman,” which happens to be about “a washedup Hollywood actor who once played the superhero Birdman in three blockbuster movies, before leaving the multi-billion-dollar franchise.” Sounds like art imitating life. “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)” is currently spreading its wings at the Tropic Cinema. With it, Mexican direc- tor Alejandro González Iñárritu presents the cautionary tale of an actor struggling to remain relevant. Riggan Thomas (Keaton) hopes to revive his career by putting on a Broadway play. Assisting him in this quest is his flamboyant producer (Zach Galifianakis) and bedraggled druggie daughter (Emma Stone). They gather up a cast that consists of his sexy girlfriend (Andrea Riseborough), a newbie Broadway actress (Naomi Watts), and a puffed-up leading man (Edward Norton). The conceit of this film is that cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki (an Oscar-winner for “Gravity”) filmed it in what appears Michael Keaton, Ed Norton in “Birdman.” to be one long continuous take. Like Hitchcock’s “Rope.” At 119 minutes that’s a heckuva flight for “Birdman.” But the question remains, will Michael Keaton … uh, I mean, Riggan Thomas … succeed in resuscitating his flagging career? Here, it’s a race between opening night and a meltdown, as we watch our Birdman slowly lose his grip on reality. Will his “Super-Realism” — as a New York Times theater critic dubs his unexpected, showstopper acting technique — save the day. Or will it give flight to Birdman.
