Christ the King
St Peter’s Cathedral is a Christ-centred, sacramental, inclusive, thinking, mission-oriented, faith
community. The Cathedral resides on the lands of the Kaurna people whom we acknowledge as the
original custodians of the Adelaide Region.
Welcome: This Sunday, the last Sunday of the Church’s
year, we celebrate the Feast of Christ the King. The
readings invite us into an image of a king and, indeed, a
kingdom that is profoundly counter cultural. The
kingdom of God is not confined to a place but is perhaps
better described by the word “reign”. This year we have
spent time with the Gospel of Matthew. Jesus’ ministry in
this gospel is characterized by blocks of teaching
interwoven with periods of action. The reign of God is
introduced by that strange series of blessings that we know as the Beatitudes. In
this reign, imaged in Christ, we are blessed when we are in places of literal or
spiritual poverty. This morning’s gospel reading from Matthew Chapter 25 drives
this point home. Jesus says that we have fed him, clothed him and welcomed him
when we have fed, clothed and welcomed the most vulnerable in his family. In
the faces of the least, we will see his face. In caring for least, we will care for him.
Strange king, indeed.

Second Reading: Ephesians 1.15-23 (Read by Francis Brooks)
I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love towards all the saints,
and for this reason I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my
prayers. I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give
you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, so that, with the
eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has
called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, and
what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to
the working of his great power. God put this power to work in Christ when he
raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places,
far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name
that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. And he has put all
things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church,
which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

Community Notices
Cathedral Kids: Children of all ages, and parents, are welcome to join the
Cathedral Kids’ program during the 10:30am service in the Cynthia Poulton
Hall. Children are invited to follow the Gospel procession down the aisle to
the altar where their cross will be collected, and then go to the Cynthia
Poulton Hall for Cathedral Kids. Children will be supervised by Marlene,
Gerald and Pamela. Alternatively, children are welcome to remain in the
Cathedral with parents, or may use the children’s area on the left side.
Newcomers: To join the Cathedral community, fill in a newcomers leaflet and
either hand it to a steward, place it in the offertory bags or return it to the
Cathedral Office.
Toilets are in the Cathedral Close, across the car park from the Cathedral.
Hearing Aid: If you wear a hearing aid, please sit on the left side of the
Cathedral and set your aid to T position to make use of the audio loop.
Changing Service times: This year’s Christmas Eve Midnight Eucharist will start
at 11.00pm. After Christmas, Sunday evening services will begin an hour
earlier at 6.00pm. This new earlier starting time will enable young trebles to
get home earlier, and events to happen more easily following Evensong.
EFM – enrol now: Frank and Christine Nelson will mentor a new EFM group
based at the Cathedral next year. If you want to learn more about the Bible
and how it relates to life today, are not afraid of doing some serious reading
and study (without the hassle of exams and formal assignments), and enjoy
bouncing ideas off others in a small group, this may be for you. Enrolment
forms available now from the Office. Cost is approx. $300 p.a. Thursday
nights, 6 – 8.30pm from February.

10.00am on Monday 24 November in the Cynthia Poulton Hall. New members

Thinking Aloud Allowed Conversazione: Tuesday 25 November in the John Dunn
Room, 7-9pm. On Christ and Politics – would Jesus have voted? Lynn Arnold
will be our Thought Provoker on this occasion. We will be confronting questions
such as: "Can a Christian really remain unsullied in the political fray?”, “Should
Christians let modern Caesars just get on with things?” and many more.
