News of the Fellowship June 2 June 2013 The Four Agreements - Ilene Haykus Don Miguel Ruiz is a physician and author of The Four Agreements. Published in 1997, The Four Agreements has sold 4 million copies and was featured on Oprah. In his book, Ruiz advocates freeing ourselves from beliefs and agreements made with ourselves and others that create limitation and unhappiness in our lives. Ultimately, he says, fulfillment is found by living in integrity, loving oneself and absolving oneself from responsibility for the woes of others. The way to do this is to follow four simple rules in life: be impeccable with your word, don’t take anything personally, don’t make assumptions, and always do your best. In today’s service, Ilene Haykus will discuss The Four Agreements and invite others to share their understanding of the ways in which these principles can help us to discover greater harmony within ourselves and with others. Ilene Haykus MA, CCHT has resided in Pagosa Springs for 18 years. She is Co-Owner of Turning Point Hypnotherapy Academy and a past president of the Pagosah Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. June 9 Traditional UU Flower Communion – Julie Loar We will also recognize our children and their teachers on this special day! The flower Communion is a Unitarian Universalist tradition begun in a dark time in Czechoslovakia around 1900 and is now celebrated in many UU congregations in early June. People are invited to bring a flower of their choice, from their garden, picked from a field or purchased. Each person will place their flower in the vase at the altar at the appropriate time during the service. Near the end of the service, each person can come forward and select a different flower from the vase. The Flower Communion signifies that as no two flowers are alike, so no two people are alike, yet each has a contribution to add. The different flowers join to form a beautiful bouquet, representing uniqueness, diversity and community. As our communjon bouquet would not be the same without the addition of each individual blossom, so our fellowship community would not be the same without each and every one of us. Don’t forget to bring a flower to help form our exquisite bouquet June 16 Father’s Day Remembrance Service – Merlin Wheeler Do you know when Father's Day was first recognized as a special holiday? Merlin Wheeler will present some history on Father's Day. Following will be presentations by three fellowship members talking about their father's and what they meant in their lives. June 23 The Second Source of UUism – Julie Loar Unitarian Universalism is a liberal religion that does not operate from dogma but rather is informed by Seven Principles and Six Sources. This framework supports the free and independent search for truth and meaning that unites UUs in spite of diverse beliefs and paradigms. The Six Sources are part of the formal statement of principles of the Unitarian Universalist Association and were adopted in 1984 and amended in 1995. They represent the backbone of Unitarian Universalism and offer a rich foundation from which to grow our spiritual lives. Throughout this year Julie Loar will speak on each source. This Sunday we will examine Source Two: "Words and deeds of prophetic women and men, which challenge us to confront powers and structures of evil with justice, compassion, and the transforming power of love." Please come to learn about this Source and share what it means to you. June 30 Second Source – Rev Angela Herrera (DVD) Unitarian Universalism draws from many religious and spiritual sources. Elements of the 2 nd source will be presented on June 30th with a DVD by Rev. Angela Herrera, an Associate Minister at the First Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Albuquerque, NM. This source draws from words and deeds of prophetic women and men that challenge us to confront powers and structures of evil with justice, compassion, and the transforming power of love. Rev. Herrera will discuss some biblical prophets and contemporary religious leaders whose main experience seems to have been one of public rejection. To highlight prophecy, she will discuss the apocalyptic prophecies found in the Book of Revelation from the prospective of the Harvard theologian, Elizabeth Schussler-Fiorenza. Religious liberals have their own version of the apocalypse that represents a vision in which the people tear down structures and systems of injustice and oppression, and in their place, build up a beloved community. Our contemporary prophets, Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr., led us to realize huge gains toward that vision. All the money earned will be used for the ministry of our fellowship and to help the community. This is a new date, moved from June 2, so please make a note of it on your calendar. Remember to bring a flower! For the months of June, July, and August, the children will not have any formal activities in the backroom. There will be a "children's corner" with lots of craft supplies and books, etc., that children and their guardians are welcome to use during the adult services. We will restart the formal activities on September 8th with the Water Communion. Remember to gather a little water while you are off adventuring to share at the Water Communion. Please continue to help out by contributing canned goods, boxed meals dried beans or pasta, pet food and personal items. I find it hard to remember so bring several items at a time. Put items in the bin by the back door and Phyl will take them to the Methodist Food Bank. With news that Food Stamps are being cut back, the food boxes will be even more needed. . . . Merilyn Moorhead Loaves and Fishes – Thursday, June 20th We are scheduled to help with Loaves and Fishes at the Parish Hall on Lewis Street in downtown Pagosa on June 20th. Lunch is served from 11:30 to 1:00. If you can help serve, please come about 11:00. Four Corners UU Retreat near Vallecito Resevoir – Save the dates—July 12-14, 2013 Our annual Four Corners UU Retreat is set for July 12 – 14 at Lois and Ken Carpenters’ place, Pine Song, just below the dam at Vallecito . Brochures with registration forms will be available at church very soon. It will take place under the pavilion alongside the Pine River. Attendees may camp out on the grounds or simply drive out from home on Saturday and Sunday. Non-campers may go to www.vallecitolakechamber.com/accommodations/ to locate cabins near the lake. Vallecito Resort and Trailer Park is the closest to Pine Song and Pine River Lodge the next closest. We know the proprietors of both and can recommend them. Other places are also quite good, but farther away. We recommend making reservations as early as possible. Campers may arrive any time after 3:00 P.M. on Friday, July 12 to check in, set up their camp and get acquainted with other campers. Actual retreat events start the next morning with check-in and a continental breakfast followed by a workshop led by our guest minister, the Rev. Fred Wooden of Fountain Street Church in Grand Rapids, MI. Fred will also be the presenter at our worship service on Sunday morning at 10:30 A.M. The topic this year will be Spiritual Your Whole Life—Four Ways to Nourish the Four People We All Are. Early Saturday afternoon may feature some organized activities and there will be plenty of free time later to visit, fish (catch and release fly fishing only), hike, check out the lake or watch the river flow onward. Everyone should bring a sack lunch for Sat. and prepare to bring/make a dish for the potluck dinner on Sat. evening. Sunday morning will start with a catered breakfast which is included with the full-time registration fee. Children’s activities will coincide with the adult workshop and Sunday service. The Saturday events will again take place in Frosty Pines’ Frontier Village (see www.frostypines.com/) set up at Pine Song. This year’s featured retreat activities will include covered wagon rides, art with natural plant dyes, tracking and stalking wildlife, and dutch oven cooking with the children making cobbler to bring to the potluck!
