October 19, 2014 Religious Community is not Enough Pat Jobe Our beloved Jennifer Slade used to tell us we are not a country club. While social contact is a wonderful reason to gather, it is not enough. Jaci Hanson, a friend of the Fellowship who lives much of the year in Florida, suffered a stroke 3 weeks ago. Her spirits are good, but she faces a long recovery. If you can help, contact Bo Boghani at 864 430 2872 AUDREY’S CLOSET For those of you who are fairly new to GUUF and don’t know, Audrey’s Closet (our own thrift shop located in the downstairs portion of the cottage) is manned strictly by GUUF volunteers. The Thrift Shop is open Thursdays and Saturdays from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon, and it is open until 1:00 pm after services on Sunday. This is a fun place to work (if you can call it work!) and we always welcome new volunteers to help out in a very friendly environment. We especially need people on Saturdays – and most especially we will need extra help during the Renaissance Faire. If you are interested in getting involved with the Thrift Shop and would like to be on the roster to receive our sign-up e-mails, please contact Linda Turner (275-2637) or Donna Goethe (246-0371). But this is not what the original disciples believed during Jesus’s lifetime—and not what Jesus claimed about himself. How Jesus Became God tells the story of an idea that shaped Christianity, and of the evolution of a belief that looked very different in the fourth century than it did in the first. We welcome, as teacher and facilitator, Dr. Michelle McClendon, who joined our staff as part-time Associate Minister October 1. Michelle has an outstanding reputation as a local teacher and scholar. Those who have studied with her love her humor, her knowledge, and her style. Just as you might expect, the journey has been an exciting one, full of heretics, truth-seekers, mystics, and people who have loved justice. Membership Sunday Membership Sunday takes place on the first Sunday of every odd numbered month immediately following the service. Anyone wishing to join the Fellowship is invited to meet in the choir room where you will “sign the book” and we will share stories of our spiritual journeys. During construction, if the meeting place changes we will announce it during the service There are seven principles which Unitarian Universalist congregations affirm and promote: The inherent worth and dignity of every person; Justice, equity and compassion in human relations; Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations;  A free and responsible search for truth and meaning;  The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large;  The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all;  Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part    DAY OF THE DEAD CELEBRATION This year’s celebration service for the ‘Day of the Dead’ will be November 2. Please bring your pictures and mementos to be put on the table with the candles. Our own expert, Betsy Smith, will be in charge of the decorations. She is still walking with two canes, so she may need some help! We will put out the decorations after the service on October 26 (one week prior to the Day of the Dead service) and everyone can participate. More votive candles holders are needed for the service. We have those in the Flower Room and the ladies at Audrey’s have helped in more ways than just candles. Please put any votives in the Flower Room so they can be used in the celebration for the Day of the Dead. On the morning of the celebration, we will meet again in the Sanctuary at 9.15 to place the mums and get any last minute pictures in place. This year, we have a new element to the celebration. A banner is being made for each of the departed members and close relatives of the Fellowship. A family member will carry this banner down the aisle at the beginning of the service. We have an exceptional membership and this celebration will be for all of us. If you wish to participate and purchase a mum or carry a banner, please complete the form and put it in the basket (Ushers please make sure the completed applications get to the GUUF office – thank you), or email/call the GUUF office.
