The various events and final wrap-ups of activities seek to embed particularly the social and emotional learning of the students. Events over this last fortnight include: • Camps for Years 4, 5 and 6 • Excursion by Prep to sing Christmas Carols to the aged care patients at Cabanda Aged Care Home • Excursion by Prep to Brisbane (on the train) to visit Santa • P-2 Swimming Activity Morning • Year 12 Final Assembly • P-2 Christmas Carols morning • Junior School Speech Night. I am delighted to relay the information from last night's Speech Night (secondary), that all three students placed into positions of high office for 2015 are past Junior School pupils. Congratulations to Oliver Pye (2015 IGS Captain), Samuel Wallace (Vice-Captain) and Hayden Randall (Vice-Captain). Additionally, 10 of the 16 young men announced as Prefects for next year were once Junior School students. Kids in Care Christmas Appeal For the past two years, all of the gifts donated to the Junior School Giving Tree at the Junior School Speech Night were donated to support the Kids in Care Christmas Appeal. Again this year, it is aimed to support this worthwhile initiative with the aim to ensure that every child in Australia in Foster Care receives gifts this Christmas. I encourage families and students to make a great learning opportunity from this initiative. Some students purchase small gifts from their own savings to place under the Giving Tree. Gifts should be new, unwrapped and brought to Junior School Speech Night. As students arrive and move to their class teacher, they should place their gifts under the tree which will be placed near the front entrance of the Auditorium. Many thanks to all families for their ongoing support of others in the community. Reminders for Speech Night • • Helpful Links ◆ MyIpswichGrammar ◆ Tuckshop Menu ◆ Clothing Store Price List ◆ Transport/Bus Info ◆ Contact Us Follow us on.. • • • • Parking should be available on the top oval, weather and oval conditions pending. Doors will open for entry of students and families at 6.00pm. Upon arrival from 6.00pm, students should report to their class teacher who will be waiting at their class' allocated seating. (Students were made aware of these locations during rehearsals.) Speech Night will commence at 6.30pm and should conclude by 8.15pm. Older siblings who are in attendance should wear school uniform as it is a school event. Parents of students in P-1 will have an opportunity to collect their sons at a scheduled point in proceedings (approx 7.30pm). Parents who opt to stay for the remainder of the evening are encouraged to ensure that their children sit with them as no children will be permitted to socialise outside the Auditorium. A selection of awards will be presented to students from Years 2 through 6. In all of these year levels, the Academic Excellence Awards (and Dux for Years 4, 5 and 6) have been determined from the GPA of the four core academic subjects - English, Mathematics, Science, History/ Geography, and further moderation if required. This GPA may differ slightly from that on the student report as this is calculated from every subject studied. Other awards include Integrity, Community and Leadership Values - Excellence - Leadership - Integrity - Community - • • Awards, as well as some subject-specific and activity-specific awards. Students who need to attend BASC after school until the commencement of Speech Night will require a fresh uniform and extra food packed for the afternoon. Students required for Dance Troupe or Choir rehearsals will be provided with dinner before changing for the night. Teachers and Class Groups for 2015 This year, continued movement and growth across a number of year levels necessitates that decisions regarding the number of classes of each year level, and therefore the allocation of students and teachers to each class grouping, be finalised closer to the commencement of the 2015 school year. This will provide greater certainty and enable the school to more accurately take into account the needs of the students, class sizes and financial implications. Families will be notified of their son’s class teacher and the peers with whom he is grouped for 2015 at the relevant year level Orientation Pool Parties which are scheduled for the following times: • Years 3 & 4 – Saturday 24 January (11.15-12.45pm) • Years 5 & 6 – Saturday 24 January (1.00-2.30pm) Families who are unable to attend these events will be able to access this information on the morning of Tuesday 27 January upon arrival at school, or prior to this on the Student-free Days of Tuesday 20 January - Friday 23 January. Yellow Butterfly Foundation Many thanks to those students and families who supported the Yellow Butterfly Foundation. As you may recall, Reece Flanderka (Year 6) and his family have established the Foundation to raise funds to undertake world first research into the rare and forgotten cancer Gallbladder Cancer that suddenly took his mother Tammy's life 2 years ago. The Foundation also aims to promote kindness, happiness and strength in the community to help remind families to live a 'good' life. Since starting 12 months ago, the Yellow Butterfly Foundation has held 3 events, generated over 500 Facebook followers and raised just over $10,000! The next event will be a fundraising dinner on 19 December to celebrate their first anniversary. The dinner will be at the Jindalee Hotel and the night will include: • a 3 course meal, • live entertainment (great band - The Dashounds) • special guest host - awesome and fun Campo 97.3FM • short talk from world leading Assoc Professor Paul Mainwaring • prizes in silent auction, raffle and lucky door The night is aimed to be fun for families (or a chance to have a night out for parents!) so anyone is welcome to attend. This will be a fantastic, memorable night celebrating kindness, happiness and strength in our community and helping Yellow Butterfly Foundation to the ultimate act of kindness and save lives through their world first Gallbladder Cancer research. Tickets are $70 and $40 for children. Table of 10 is $630. Why not get a group of parents together for a fun night out. JUNIOR SCHOOL COMPULSORY ENSEMBLES PROGRAM 2015 YEAR 5 AND 6 STUDENTS Dear Parents, 2014 has been a most successful year in terms of both growth and quality of instrumental music education in the Junior School. Our ensemble performances throughout the year have been outstanding. We are happy to announce the enrolment procedures and options for concert bands and other classroom music activities in 2015 to ensure continued success. Current 2014 Year 5 Band – the aim of the Compulsory Ensemble Program is to teach the foundation skills necessary to playing the students’ chosen instruments and then continue learning through to the end of the following year. In 2015, it is strongly recommended that students continue to learn their allocated instrument, as 1 of the 2 weekly classroom music classes is a rehearsal for band and strings. A small fee per term fee will apply for students wishing to continue on their existing instrument. Parents may wish to opt for a private lesson, at a discounted rate, to take the place of their small group lesson. Students choosing not to continue with their instrumental studies will participate in other classroom activities, of which there is no fee. New Year 5 Students in 2015 – These students will be tested for suitability and placed on an instrument as part of the Compulsory Ensemble Program for 2015. It is strongly recommended that students continue with this allocated instrument until the end of Year 6. New Year 6 Students in 2015 - As Year 6 Music also includes compulsory ensemble classes, new Year 6 students to IGS in 2015 will need to make a selection for ensemble tuition. Students can either nominate a band instrument that they started learning at their other school, or nominate to join the beginner guitar group (of which there is a small fee per term fee) or opt to participate in the other classroom music activities, of which there is no fee. Please read through the information above carefully and discuss with your son the options available to them in 2015. Once you have discussed the options, please complete the details on the opposite page, and return it to school as soon as possible. We look forward to working with your son in 2015. As part of our 150th Anniversary celebrations, the young ’Men of Grammar’ were each invited to contribute a poem to this Anthology. Working alongside their inspiring teachers, the boys wrote the following collection of poems for us all to enjoy. We are taken on a journey from sea creatures to snowboards, the cinquain to haiku and volcanoes to dragons. Through this Anthology, the boys of the Junior School have offered a youthful glimpse of their imagination, creativity and memories. “Pan, who and what art thou?” he cried huskily. “I’m youth, I’m joy,” Peter answered at a venture, “I’m a little bird that has broken out of the egg.” J.M.
