Probus Club of Muskoka Lakes – November 2014 Page 1 Featured Speaker at AGM Dr. Norman Yan - Environmental Good News Dr. Norman Yan is a limnologist, a specialist in the study of fresh water. His presentation was cautionary but optimistic, with the hope that we will learn from our past in order to protect the future of our fresh water lakes. Because of Canada’s vast bodies of fresh water (1,628 lakes in Muskoka alone), we have a unique responsibility. Dr. Yan outlined some of the threats to our water supply: climate change, development, salt/calcium decline, invading species, etc. He brought good news. Recovery from cultural eutrophication (allowing excessive amounts of nutrients like phosphorus to enter the ecosystem) is possible. Controlling emissions from smelting and other sources have reduced acid rain. There has been a decline in lead pollution with the decrease of lead production. And, with the banning of lawn pesticides, levels of DDT have dropped. The future is promising; we can assess, communicate and raise awareness, diagnose the causes, intervene (using proven methods), and re-assess the effectiveness of the intervention. At the November Bracebridge Probus Club meeting, Heinz Puersten received an award for outstanding service to Probus Canada in the role of National Director from 2007 to 2012; Probus Club of Muskoka Lakes received a 5-year recognition. Dennis Lawson was in attendance to represent our club. New Toronto Club (from Richard Furlong) We have a new club in District 2, formed yesterday, with next meeting December 10 th at the Holy Rosary Parish Hall, 356 St. Clair Ave. W., beside the TTC St. Clair West station, (St. Clair & Bathurst area). Although costumes were optional, most of the members got into the spirit and dressed up for the occasion. There were some wonderful and very clever outfits, but it was our own Wilsie Mann who took first prize with her Amelia Earhart costume, complete with the pilot helmet and goggles worn by her grandfather! Jan Sharman and Ed Kapusniak kept us entertained with Halloween themed trivia and name that tune. It certainly put our grey cells to work as we tried to remember such things as 10 characters from the Addams family, the full name of the character played by Elizabeth Montgomery in Bewitched, the name of the Count in Bram Stoker’s Dracula, all the actors who had portrayed that character on screen, and the name of the real person on whom the novel was based, among other questions. The lunch was delicious, and everyone seemed to have a fun time and agreed that it was truly a wonderful event. Thanks to Jan and Ed for organizing.
