Applied Behavior Analysis Services (ABA) in MD, DC and VA
Applied behavior analysis (ABA) services for the treatment of autism or autism
spectrum disorders are an included benefit for certain risk business in Maryland, the District
of Columbia and Virginia.
Maryland
• ABA services for children under the age of 19 are covered under the habilitative
benefit for all MD risk plans with the exception of Consumer Direct Medigap plans.
• There are no therapy maximums or visit limits.
District of Columbia
• ABA services are covered for all members under the habilitative benefit in DC for all
DC non-grandfathered Consumer Direct and group products with a group size of 50
or smaller including Congressional groups 1RA7, 1RA8 and 1RA9 and all Consumer
Direct non-grandfathered plans. Consumer Direct Medigap plans and FEHBP are
excluded.
• There are no therapy maximums or visit limits.
Virginia
• ABA services for children aged 2-6 are covered for VA 51+ risk groups.
• There are no therapy limits.
• There is a $35,000 annual maximum per member for ABA services.
Preauthorization
ABA services will be authorized and managed by Magellan effective 1/2/15 in all
three jurisdictions. Previously, preauthorization was not required.
