STUDENT EXPRESS A Message from the Master

STUDENT EXPRESS
A Message from the Master
DECEMBER, 2014
Due to popular demand we will hosting Picture Days at Brentwood and Hendersonville.
We request that everyone participate so we can have all the student pictured on our 2014
composite picture board that will be displayed at the school.
The pictures will be made at the Hendersonville school the week of December 1st thru
the 3rd and at Brentwood the week of December 8th thru the 10th. There is no charge to
take the picture and I need everyone to preset the time that is best for you. Our goal is to
have a large, framed student body composite board that we all will be proud of.
Shihan:
A SOLDIER’S SILENT NIGHT
T’WAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS, HE LIVED ALL ALONE,
IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE MADE OF PLASTER AND STONE.
I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE AND TO SEE JUST WHO IN THIS HOME DID LIVE
I LOOKED ALL ABOUT, A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE, NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS, NOT EVEN A TREE.
NO STOCKING BY THE MANTLE, JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND.
ON THE WALL HUNG PICTURES OF FAR DISTANT LANDS.
WITH MEDALS AND BADGES, AWARDS OF ALL KINDS, A SOBER THOUGHT CAME THROUGH MY MIND.
FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT, IT WAS DARK AND DREARY,
I FOUND THE HOME OF A SOLIDER, ONCE I COULD SEE CLEARLY.
THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING, SILENT, ALONE, CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR IN THIS ONE BEDROOM HOME.
THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE, THE ROOM IN SUCH DISORDER.
NOT HOW I PICTURED A UNITED STATES SOLDIER.
WAS THIS THE HERO OF WHOM I’D JUST READ? CURLED UP IN A PONCHO, ON THE FLOOR FOR A BED?
I REALIZED THE FAMILES THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT,
OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS WHO WERE WILLING TO FIGHT.
SOON ROUND THE WORLD, THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY,
AND GROWNUPS WOULD CELEBRATE A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS DAY.
THEY ALL ENJOYED FREEDOM EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR, BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS,
LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE.
I COULDN’T HELP WONDER HOW MANY LAY ALONE, ON A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE, IN A LAND FAR FROM HOME.
THE VERY THOUGHT BROUGHT A TEAR TO MY EYE, I DROPPED TO MY KNEES AND STARTED TO CRY.
THE SOLDIER AWAKENED AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE,
“SANTA DON’T CRY, THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE, I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM, I DON’T ASK FOR MORE.
MY LIFE IS MY GOD, MY COUNTRY, MY CORPS”.
THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER AND DRIFTED TO SLEEP.
I COULDN’T CONTROL IT, I CONTINUED TO WEEP. I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS, SO SILENT AND STILL,
AND WE BOTH SHIVERED FROM THE COLD NIGHT’S CHILL.
I DIDN’T WANT TO LEAVE ON THAT COLD, DARK NIGHT, THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOR SO WILLING TO FIGHT.
THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER, WITH A VOICE SOFT AND PURE WHISPERED,
“CARRY ON SANTA. IT’S CHRISTMAS DAY, ALL IS SECURE”.
ONE LOOK AT MY WATCH, AND I KNEW HE WAS RIGHT.
MERRY CHRISTMAS MY FRIEND,
AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT.

DEFENSE AGAINST PICKPOCKETS
Pickpocketing is one of the oldest crimes in the world and remains common today. More often than not, pickpockets get
away, and those who are caught face minimal jail time. So the
appeal of pickpocketing is strong for crooks.
There are many tricks pickpockets use to get access to your purse
of wallet. At the beach or library they are on the lookout for
backpacks and belongings lying around. Sometimes they have
accomplices who distract you, while the pickpocket gets away with
your wallet.
Here are some ways you can thwart the pickpocket’s efforts:
 Don’t assume that a well-dressed person, or a woman with a
baby, or a tourist with a hat and camera cannot be a pickpocket. Pickpockets blend in with the crowd and do not look
like criminals.
 Don’t carry your wallet in the back pocket. If possible, keep
your wallet in a money belt under your clothes or in your
front pocket.
 Carry your purse under your arm.
 Work on looking self-confident. Pickpockets tend to prey on
vulnerable targets.
 Keep a list of all your cards handy so that if you lose your
wallet or purse, you can cancel or replace your cards easily.

PEACE ON EARTH
Christmas is a magical time of year. Cities are bustling
with busy shoppers. Every mall has a line of children
waiting to see Santa Clause. Pretty lights decorate the
yards. And there’s a wonderful aroma of fresh apple pie
in the air. But don’t forget who’s Birthday it is! December 25th is the day set aside each year to celebrate the
birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY JESUS!

Kid's Corner...
Heart in Your Mouth
During your test or graduation day, does your heart begin to pound so much that it feels like it
is thumping against your throat? The phrase used to express this feeling is “your heart is in
your mouth,” which means that you’re scared or anxious about something. The ancient Greek
poet Homer used the phrase thousands of years ago, when he wrote the famous poem The
Iliad (which was made into a movie, Troy, starring Brad Pitt), and people have been using it
ever since.
