Ninth District Individuals with Disabilities Committee: Dr. Riggins reported the 9th District Dental Health Planning & Hospital Dentistry
Committee met on Tuesday, September 16, 2014. Discussion ensued regarding the proposed Touro Dental School of NY Medical College
in Valhalla, slated to open 2016. It was stated by Dr. Constantine that the 9th is leaning toward developing a sense of cooperation and
maintaining an open line of communication with the school. Several dentists reported on their recent missions to India and Jamaica to
improve the oral health and provide dental services to the needy. NYSDA and NYS Dental Foundation are proposing a May 2015 summit
to address challenges with oral health care of the special needs population, with NYSDA officers, trustees, delegates, component presidentelects, certain councils, and legislators to be invited. Discussions also included the identical rate of reimbursement for facilities that handle
the tougher cases as those which handle the easier ones, with the resulting differential in supplies/staffing cost(s). A different approach to the
Richard G. Spolzino Access to care Humanitarian award was suggested which would be based more on those who make small achievements
for improving access to care, such as dentists who visit homes or volunteer at hospital clinics. Finally, it was noted that the grounds of Taconic
DDSO are for sale, the Dental Department is still active, and work continues on its transition.
New Business: Dr. Ed Riggins suggested possibly recruiting DCDS to affiliate with local hospitals
Meeting adjourned at 8:35 pm
Respectfully submitted by: Dr. Lina Angiolillo, as Recording Secretary
