Title (2pts)
The Quicker Picker upper- Bounty versus Kroger brand paper towels
Purpose (3pts)
Many brands of paper towels claim they can pick up the most liquid. Which brand actually does, Bounty or
Kroger brand?
Research/Background (3pts)
Bounty Brand:
Both Brands:
1. Package Claims:
1. 2 ply paper towel sheets
Claims to be 2x more
2. 11” x 6” sheets
absorbent and provide
3. 2 roll packs select a sheet
33% more paper towels
4. No print or pattern
than a standard roll
5. Made in the USA
2. Contains 94 sheets per roll
3. Contains 7.9 m2 total area
of Paper Towels
4. Cost per two pack= $4.69
5. Cost per sheet =$.0499
Kroger Brand:
1. Package Claims:
“Clean Up and Stay Strong”
“Super Absorbent”
2. Contains 103 sheets per roll
3. Contains 8.7m2 total area of
Paper Towels
4. Cost per two pack = $2.99
5. Cost per sheet= $.0290
Hypothesis (2pts)
I believe the Kroger brand of paper towels will perform just as well if not better than the Bounty brand
based on the overall texture, pattern and makeup of the product.
Variables, Constants, and Control (3pts)
Independent Variable= Paper Towel Brand
Dependent Variable = Average Volume (mL) of water held by 11” x 2” strip from each brand of Paper
towel
Materials (1pt)
2 brands select-a-size paper towels
3 beakers or plastic cups
Scissors
Graduated cylinder
Ruler
Timer
Safety Concerns (1pt)
Be sure to clean up any spills to avoid a fall.
Procedure (10pts)
1. Cut 30 strips from each brand of paper towel measuring 11” x 2” (be sure to keep the strips separated
to know which strip is which brand)
2. Fill 3 small beakers with 50 mL of water
3. Place one strip of Bounty brand paper towel into each of the three beakers
4. Wait 5 minutes and remove the paper towel strips
5. Pour each beaker of remaining water into the graduated cylinder one at a time
6. Take a reading of the remaining water (that which did not get absorbed by the paper towel) from the
graduated cylinder and record your findings in the data table.
7. Repeat steps 3-6 10 times for Bounty paper towels to get an accurate and consistent result
8. Repeat steps 3-7 for Kroger brand paper towels

Analysis and Conclusion (14pts)
Based on the testing of 10 sheets of paper
towels from each brand, the Kroger Brand
of paper towels was able to hold 10%
more liquid (2.9 mL more per strip) than the
Bounty Brand. (28-25.1= 2.9/28=10%)
These findings confirm the hypothesis
stated at the start of this experiment that “the
Kroger brand of paper towels will perform
just as well if not better than the Bounty
brand based on the overall texture, pattern
and makeup of the product.”
Hard to control variables:
1. Getting precisely 50 mL in each
beaker.
2. Getting an accurate reading each
time on the graduated cylinder.
