WORSHIP
Sunday, November 23, 2014
ETERNAL GOD, you set Jesus Christ to rule
over all things, and made us servants in your
kingdom. By your Spirit empower us to love
the unloved, and to minister to all in need.
Then at the last bring us to your eternal realm
where we may worship and adore you and be
welcomed into your everlasting joy. Through
Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns
with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one
God, forever and ever. Amen.

• we confess •
*Prayer of Confession (together)
Righteous God, you have crowned Jesus Christ as Lord of all.
We confess that we have not bowed before him, and are slow to
acknowledge his rule. We give allegiance to the powers of this world
and fail to be governed by justice and love. In your mercy, forgive
us. Raise us to acclaim him as ruler of all, that we may be loyal
ambassadors, obeying the commands of our Lord Jesus Christ. In
Jesus’ name. Amen.
*Declaration of Pardon
Leader: Friends, believe the good news of the Gospel.
People: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.
*Congregational response (together)
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
World without end. Amen, Amen.
*Affirmation of Faith - The Apostles’ Creed (together)
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the
Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day
he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on
the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come
to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy
catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the
resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

O may this bounteous God through all our life be near us,
With ever-joyful hearts and blessed peace to cheer us;

Food Pantry Offering
Today we will be receiving our annual special offering to support the Food Pantry.
There are special Food Pantry Offering envelopes for your use in the pew racks this
Sunday. You can give knowing that 100% of your gift goes to helping feed people
in need in our community as the food is packed and distributed by volunteers from
our congregation. Once again this year, for the seventh consecutive year, we have
served over 20,000 of our neighbors in need through your generous giving to the
Food Pantry. Because of what you give in this special offering, we look forward to
continuing this important ministry next year. In this season of Thanksgiving, we
give thanks for your support of the Food Pantry.
STEWARDSHIP
Traditionally at this time of year, Church of the Palms has
conducted an annual stewardship campaign.
As the
Generosity Team requested, the Session has approved
moving the 2015 Stewardship Campaign to the winter
quarter. This will allow us to reach more people with the
story of generosity. For those who would like to pledge now,
you may do so in one of two ways; you may use the website
http://www.churchofthepalms.org/pledge.html or use a
2015 pledge card now available in the back of the Sanctuary
or in the church office. We encourage you to consider
increasing your pledge for 2015.

The story: creation TO THE resurrection
10:15 a.m. • Chapel Reception Room
This class is designed as a companion to the Sunday sermon series. Each week we
will have the opportunity to look deeper into the scriptures behind the sermon. We
will learn how God has revealed His plan of salvation from Creation to the Cross.
Augustine formulated the axiom, “in the Old Testament the New is concealed, in the
New the Old is revealed”. Led by Dale Vollrath: [email protected].
New Life Class
10:15 a.m. • Room 202
New Life Class is a wonderful group of parents who meet Sunday mornings

and gleaning wisdom from current books related to family life. Led by Derek
Thompson, [email protected].
Christians Under Construction - Biblical Potpourri
10:15 a.m. • Room 206
Each week we will tackle a new subject. For example, we will bring Bible lessons
to current issues; we’ll ponder Biblical mysteries; we will wrestle with the question
of free will against Biblical truth; and match what we know from science against
traditional Biblical beliefs. We read the Bible, consider how the lessons apply to the
real world, and practice informed discussion. Led by Adam Leonard (acleonard@
comcast.net) and Tom Webber.
A Time out for parents
10:15 a.m. • Room 109
Parents, please join our small group Bible study. Each week we will visit with each
other and catch up on our week. This will be followed by a 10-15 minute video from
Right Now Media, scripture readings, and discussion questions. Please note: there
will be no class on December 21 or 28.

missions
Jeanine Giuffrida
YWAM (Youth With A Mission)
“Expect great things from God, and attempt great
things for God.” Jeanine reports that this quote is
from William Carey, one of the fathers of our modern
missionary movement and is one of our mottos for this
year’s Discipleship Training School. She adds “We
desire this out of a heart to love Jesus without limit, to
expect Him to reveal himself in Truth by His Word and
experientially, and to see His kingdom come through
our lives as we allow ourselves to be to Him do and say
what He desires through us.
Jeanine states: “it’s hard to believe I have started my
second year serving with YWAM here in England. As
I have come to realize over the past year, WYAM life
runs at a rather frenzied, and shall we say, lively pace. With a few short, but
wonderful weeks of rest and ‘recoup’ spent back in the States over the summer
- connecting with so many lovely friends and family, I now find myself back in
the full swing of a new year. I praise God for my incredible DTS (Discipleship
Training School) staff team from last year. Looking to this year, we’ve had
some changes as one of our staff’s commitment here in Derby was at an end,
but we’ve added to our team an inspiring, enthusiastic staff member from
Cambridge who has been a joy to get to know and work alongside.
“God has been stretching me as I’ve had more consistent opportunities to lead
our YWAM base worship times together and bring relevant teaching on worship
and prayer. I also enjoy leading our morning devotions (we call them ‘energizers’)
with the DTS staff and students. I am heading up the administrative running
of the school as DTS school leader and I try to keep up with all that this entails.
At times it’s an ever present challenge to cram in everything that needs doing!”
On the outreach front: “I am thrilled to be working again with our Roma youth
in the city. I missed their bright, smiling faces over the past couple months as
I needed to take that time to step back and prepare for the DTS and get our
staff trained and ready. Our heart in continuing with this ministry is to be role
models and instill positive self worth and value and share the love of Jesus
practically and in word as we do activities, etc., on a weekly basis.

“Another one I’m very excited about is working as a one-on-one mentor
at a school in a very deprived area with girls who come from very troubled
backgrounds. I will be receiving training for this and I am looking to start
within the next month or so. The aim is to empower these young girls to know
they are loved, cherished and full of worth. This is a new ministry that schools
are welcoming with open arms. Please pray for more people willing to mentor
and for these girls’ lives to be radically changed for good.” Derby, England.
“Your Prayers are Powerful and Effective!”
James 5:16
1. “Please pray for our students to encounter God in a meaningful and lifechanging way and that their transition to living in community together
and in a ‘foreign’ country would be smooth and quick.”
2. “Please pray for for my time management skills to be more effective and
for the energy and vision and wisdom to lead well and do all that God has
placed in my heart this year.”

encounters they had in the streets and parks of Bristol.

THaNKsGIVING
Wednesday, November 26, 6:00 p.m. • Sanctuary
We hope you will join us in what has become a wonderful tradition as we share a
combined Thanksgiving Service with our friends from Temple Sinai. We will begin with
a soup and salad dinner at 5:00 p.m. in the Campus Center, followed by a Thanksgiving
Celebration in the Sanctuary at 6:00 p.m.
‘Tis The Season To Ring The Salvation Army Bells
November 28 - December 24 (various times)
Publix on Bee Ridge Road & Beneva
We have an opportunity to show the love and light of
Christ in the cold dark world by ringing the Salvation
Army bells. We are inviting you to sign up for a twohour shift between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.
Monday - Saturday, beginning November 28 and running
through Christmas Eve. We will also ring on Saturdays
ONLY from 11:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. at Macy’s at Southgate
Mall. Like last year, we don’t want anyone to ring alone,
so please sign up with a family member or friend from
church. Or even better, invite a friend who doesn’t attend
church to ring with you! We especially need people
with a flexible schedule to sign-up as substitute bell ringers in case
someone has to cancel his/her shift.
Bring a taste of “home” to the mission field and
stretch your Thanksgiving guest list to include a
missionary family. Your $80 gift helps deliver a turkey
and all the trimmings to one missionary family in Haiti,
the Bahamas, or the Dominican Republic. Send a check
to Agape Flights (note “Thanksgiving” in memo line), 100 Airport
Ave., Venice FL 34285 or do so online at www.agapeflights.com, by clicking on the
Thanksgiving icon and following the directions.

Important Notice
About Year End Giving
Please remember that all financial contributions for 2014 must be
received in the church office no later than noon on Wednesday,
December 31, which is when the office closes that day. Contributions
that are mailed must be postmarked on or before December 31 to be
considered as contributions for 2014. All contributions received within
these parameters will be reflected on your 2014 financial contributions
statement. Anything else will be posted as received in 2015. To avoid
confusion at year end, please be sure that you note on your check and/or
envelope to which year’s pledge your contribution is intended.

THINGS TO CONSIDER IN YOUR YEAR-END GIVING
•Supporting the ministry of Church of the Palms is like investing in a lifechanging diversified charitable portfolio. Think of all we do: educate children
and youth, feed the hungry, counsel the discouraged, tutor young students,
inspire worshippers through exceptional music, preach the message of good
news, support missionaries across the globe, and the list goes on.
•If you have highly appreciated stocks, instead of selling the stocks and
contributing the cash, contributing the stocks directly will usually provide for
a larger tax deduction. Consult with your financial planner on tax advantages
to your giving.
•Your generosity in these remaining weeks of the year will allow us to address
our severely underfunded capital reserve. We are blessed to have such fine
facilities and we must be prepared to care for them in the years ahead with a
hearty capital reserve.
Legacy Giving Corner
What Will They Say When You’re Gone?
An old song used to plead, “Please don’t talk
about me when I’m gone”. In fact, it is most
likely that folks will speak about us when we are
gone whether we like it or not. The real issue
is, what will they have to say? Providing for the
causes and institutions that have been meaningful
to us during life can be a most effective means
of giving our friends something to remember us by. When you
remember the church in your will, you leave more than money.
You are leaving powerful evidence that your life accomplished
something significant and lasting. Then, when folks think of us,
they will have something positive to say.
Contact your tax professional to learn more. For more information, about the

God’s Story
Your Story
November 23, 2014
For the week of November 23, 2104
Devotion: Use this resource at home to guide your household’s daily
devotions. You can do this alone, as a couple, as a family; in the morning,
during the day, or at night. Find a routine that works best for you.
Pray: Light a candle and open your devotion time with a prayer.
God of promise and judgment, you proclaimed deliverance for your
people after they suffered for their sin. Deliver us from our sin, by the
gift of your faithfulness, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
Reflect: Reflect on the key verses from Sunday’s reading.
For if you truly amend your ways and your doings, if you truly act justly one
with another, if you do not oppress the alien, the orphan, and the widow, or
shed innocent blood in this place, and if you do not go after other gods to
your own hurt, then I will dwell with you in this place, in the land that I gave
of old to your ancestors forever and ever. Jeremiah 7:5-7
Study: Study the reading and consider the background.
By the time of Jeremiah, the Babylonian king had defeated Assyria
(who had defeated the Northern Kingdom of Israel). The Babylonian
king now threatened to destroy Judah (the Southern Kingdom).
Jeremiah spoke on God’s behalf, with judgments for a people who
seemed to have forgotten how to remain faithful to God. God’s promise
of deliverance still rang throughout Jeremiah’s prophesies, yet God
showed God won’t stand idly by while the people sin. God’s promise
would be kept, but not until the people had endured punishment (exile)
for their unfaithfulness to God.

Read: Read the following daily readings to deepen your understanding of
Sunday’s text. After the reading, ask the follow-up questions.
Follow the story of Israel’s and Judah’s disobedience, and the words of
God’s prophet, Jeremiah.
Sunday, Jeremiah 1:4-10; 7:1-11, Jeremiah’s Temple Sermon
Monday, Jeremiah 7:16-34, The People’s Disobedience
Tuesday, Jeremiah 8:18-9:11, The Prophet Mourns for the People
Wednesday, Jeremiah 10:1-10, Idolatry Has Brought Ruin on Israel
Thursday, Jeremiah 10:11-16, Idolatry Has Brought Ruin on Israel
Friday, Jeremiah 10:17-25, The Coming Exile
Saturday, Jeremiah 11:1-17, Israel and Judah Have Broken the Covenant
How does mourning and lament shape the communities of Israel and
Judah? What role does mourning play in shaping our lives?
Connect:
Connect in conversation with others in your household. Discuss the
following questions, or simply check in with “Highs” and “Lows.”



What was a high point of your day? What was a low point?
What evidence have you seen that God remains faithful to
people today, despite people’s inability to remain faithful to
God?
When you were a child, what did you believe you would do to
make the world a better place? What can you do now to make
the world a better place?
Do:
By acting on what we learn, we make God’s word come alive. Do the
following activity this week.
Do something this week that leaves the world in a better place than
before you arrived. (Plant something, create something artistic, enhance
a relationship, forgive someone, care for someone who is sick)
Bless:
Close your devotion with a blessing.
