Our Lord Jesus Christ Lord of the Universe

Our Lord Jesus Christ, Lord of the Universe
November 23, 2014
Our Lord Jesus Christ
Lord of the Universe
Let us praise Jesus Christ our king
for the wonderful things he has done.
He sends out his word to heal us.
He satisfies the thirsty with the water of life.
He fills the hungry with the abundance of his kingdom.
Let us praise Jesus, redeemer and renewer of all things.
May we always trust in his goodness and love,
And have faith in his grace and mercy,
May we always believe he cares about
justice and righteousness,
And draw our life from his eternal purposes.
Let us praise Jesus Christ our king and saviour,
May we be filled with the hope and promise of his coming,
And give our lives to follow him.
May we be gripped by his compassionate ways,
And walk with assurance and trust into his grace and peace.
Amen.

Catholic Campaign for Human Development
November 22 & 23
November 2014
!
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
!
The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) has
come to the aid of those in need nationwide for over 40 years in an
effort to eradicate poverty. Pope Francis has told us to “Never tire
of working for a more just world, marked by greater solidarity.”
Firmly guided by the principles of Catholic Social Teaching.
CCHD puts these words into action by funding housing,
education, and the development of job opportunities.
!
This Collection is the primary source of funding for CCHS’s antipoverty grants and educational programs. Collection funds offer
new hope each year to those living in poverty throughout the
United States by providing low income families permanent
solutions. Help CCHD defend human dignity and show Christ’s
charity to those in need. Together, we can support families and
communities across the United States.
!
The Collection for CCHD will be taken up in all Parishes in the
Diocese of Venice the weekend of November 22 and 23, 2014.
Your generous donations will give those in poverty the support
needed to make lasting changes. Also know that 25 percent of the
Collection’s proceeds remain in our Diocese to fight poverty in
local communities and defend the dignity of our neighbors.
!
Thank you, and know that you have the assurance of my continued
consideration and prayers. May God bless you for your generosity.
!
Sincerely yours in Christ,

Thanksgiving is a

also a time when
in-laws often
mix. Your

from a healthy

Seek to know at least one extended

St Benedict and Buy Nothing Day
St. Benedict was born in the town of Nursia, Italy in 480.
Known for his Rule of Benedict, he is considered the father
of Western monasticism. He, like the desert fathers and
mothers the century before him, “fled” what he considered the
immoral culture of the Roman Empire. Benedictʼs rule of life
is a guide for living a life grounded in God, voluntary
simplicity, hospitality to others, and compassion for the world.
St. Benedict was a very practical leader who developed the
Rule to help monks and nuns to live together faithfully in
community. It remains the basis for the structure of monastic
communities, as well as guide for a multitude of Christians
outside of monastic life.
The Rule of Benedict is relevant today because it describes in a
practical way what living a life grounded in God looks like day
to day. We are often pretty good at seeing the ʻbig picture”
viewpoint about life, spirituality, and ecology; it is translating
the “big picture” view into our day-to-day life that is most challenging. They say that “the devil is in the
details” but St. Benedict helps us see God in the details.
So we come to the issue of Buy Nothing Day an international culture jamming event where people are
asked to buy nothing on the biggest shopping day of the year; the Friday after Thanksgiving. Many
stores will be open on Thanksgiving as well. The act of buying nothing on Thanksgiving Day and
November 28th is an act of resistance against turning Christmas into a festival of materialism. No
giving in to shopping on these two days is a practical act of “fleeing” a culture largely worshipping
excessive spending, and instead being more grounded in God, voluntary simplicity, and compassion for the
world.
Participate by not participating!
Of course, Buy Nothing Day isn't about changing your lifestyle for just one day - make this a lasting
relationship with your consumer conscience - maybe a life changing experience! Make a commitment
to consuming less, recycling more and challenging companies to clean up and be fair. The
supermarket or shopping mall might offer great choices, but this shouldn't be at the cost of the
environment or developing countries.
!
Ask yourself these simple questions:
• Do I need it?
• How many do I already have?
• How much will I use it?
• How long will it last?
• Could I borrow it from a friend or family member?
• Am I able to clean and/or maintain it myself ?
• Will I be able to repair it? Am I willing to?
• How will I dispose of it when I’m done using it?
“Joy to the World”
Nativity Sculpture
Just in time for Christmas gift giving, we have
available for purchase the sculpture “Joy to the World”
by Timothy Schmaltz. This beautiful depiction of the
Nativity can be purchased at our Religious Article Store
located in the Church at the back of the Library or at the
Parish Office. The cost is $40 (the retail cost is $59.99).
If you would prefer to have your statue shipped up north,
leave your name and phone number on the sheet in the
narthex or come to the Parish Office to place your order.
There is a $5 charge for shipping.
Deceased Loved Ones
The church prays constantly for the
dead and rejoices in the communion of
saints. This takes place in a special way
during November. During this month,
we may write the name of our deceased
loved one in the book found in the
Narthex. Communally, we pray for all
our departed.
Fr. Ronald Rolheiser, OMI reminds us that prayer for the dead is
meant to console the living and heals our relationship to them, if
needed. When someone close to us dies, it is natural to feel a
certain amount of guilt, not because that person died and we go
on living, but because, being human, we have had a less-thanperfect relationship with him or her – some unfinished business. In
prayer, we help wash clean those things that remain painful
between us. And mainly, we pray for the dead because we believe
in the communion of saints, an essential Christian doctrine that
asks us to believe that a vital flow of life continues to exist
between ourselves and our loved ones, even beyond death.
And behold, I Am with you always..... Mt 28:20 Thrift Shop News

!The shop will be closed on Thursday,
November 27th so that our volunteers
and staff can

SIMPLE
LIVING
enriches
lives
This week’s reflection: We don’t like being judged, but we tend to be quick
to judge others. How different our judgements would be if we always realize
that we are looking upon the face of Christ in the other!
!
!
!
!
!
Remember when Jesus said, "Behold, the kingdom of God is in the midst of you." In
other words this moment, this ordinary moment, is sacred. How can we pay better
attention to the sacred in everyday life? One way is to take off your shoes. Go
barefoot sometime this week even if you can only do so inside. Feel the earth or sand
or wood or tile beneath your toes. Consider that you are walking on holy ground and
stop to take notice of heaven.

2014 Alternative
Gift Giving Project
Celebrate Christmas by making a difference in the world.
Communicate the love of Jesus in your gift giving this year.
You can spread the love and compassion of Christmas through our Parish Alternative
Gift Giving Project. This project connects your Christmas gift giving to those in our
area who are in need of food and assistance for themselves and their families. So
instead of buying that sweater that doesn’t fit or something for someone who has
more than they need, give your friends and loved ones the gift of providing for those
in need.
When you make your donation of $25 you will receive a gift card explaining that you
have made a donation to the St. Columbkille Food Pantry in the gift recipient’s
name. Call the Parish Office 489-3973 to purchase your gift.
We pray:
Jesus, generous font of all blessings, thank you for the virtue of charity. Grant me the strength
to model after You, refraining from any acts of judging others, to generously share with those
in need. Erase any weaknesses of my human nature, allowing my soul to shine as the morning
sun. By Your grace may my charity toward others truly reflect Your eternal example of perfect
love, creating in me that same love for all people.
Blessed be Your glorious name!
Amen

Thanksgiving
Dinners & Baskets
!
On Thanksgiving Day last year, we
delivered dinner to 440 people who
had no one with whom to share this
wonderful family holiday. In
partnership with Gladiolus Food
Pantry we also gave 586 baskets with
turkey and all the trimmings to people
in need in our community, We are
doing the same projects this year. We can use gift cards from
grocery stores and food that is shown below.
Food Needed - please give according to your last name
A - G = canned green beans and corn
H - R =monetary or grocery store gift card for the purchase of
fresh fruit, vegetables and turkeys.
S - Z = Mashed potatoes and stuffing.
Please place food or other donations in the Thanksgiving box in
the narthex. Donations are needed by Sunday, November 23rd.
Thanksgiving Week Volunteers Needed
With Thanksgiving fast approaching, our Outreach Ministry team
is carefully planning for the meals we will be preparing and
delivering on Thanksgiving Day. This is a complex project that
requires careful planning. We cannot accommodate walk in
volunteers. If you are interested in participating in this year’s
project, we ask that you register by calling the Parish Office
489-3973 as soon as possible.
Jesse
! Tree
!The Jesse Tree is a leafless tree decorated
with symbols portraying Jesus’ spiritual
heritage. It is named from Isaiah 11:1: “A
shoot will spring forth from the stump of
Jesse, and a branch out of his roots.” The
Jesse Tree was a vehicle to tell the story of
God in the Old Testament, and the branch
was a sign of newness – a way to talk about
the expected Messiah. This Advent, we can be branches of
generosity for people in need.
Beginning the First Sunday of Advent, (the weekend of
November 29 - 30) look for the Jesse Tree in the narthex and join
the parish in a giving project to help our neighbors.
It’s easy to participate: take an ornament and ID tag from the Jesse
Tree and purchase the item written on the ornament. Then gift
wrap your item, attach the ID tag and bring your package to
church by December 14th. The ornament is for your tree, but
please be sure to return the gift with the ID tag attached. All gifts
must be identifiable in order to get them to the right person.
Thank you!
