Greenway Presentation
The River of Grass Greenway, a
proposed non-motorized transportation
and recreation corridor across the
Everglades between Naples and Miami,
will offer activities such as bicycling,
walking, bird-watching, photography,
fishing, etc. Currently a Feasibility Study
and a Master Plan are being developed.
Public meetings are scheduled 6 pm
to 9 pm on Tuesday, December 9, in
Miami at the Miami Center for
Architecture and Design, 100 NE 1 Ave;
on Wednesday, December 10, in
Everglades City at the Everglades City
Hall Chambers; and on Thursday,
December 11, in Naples at the Collier

Christmas Tree Lighting
Parades, Glow Run
The Christmas Tree Lighting celebration
will be held on Saturday, December 13,
at 5:00 pm at City Hall followed by the
Booster Club’s Light Parade ($20 to put
a float in; $10 for golf cart) and the 5K
Glow Run ($25). Everyone is invited to
participate in all events (proceeds go to
the athletics program). For information
about the Light Parade and Glow Run,
inquire at Island Café (695-0003). There
will be caroling and a concession stand.
The Boat Parade will start at 7:30 pm.

We are so excited to announce that Everglades City School will
be offering an Adult Education Class for GED. The GED is a
General Education Development test. Passing this test at the end
of the program will award you a GED. This is commonly
considered to be an equivalent to a high school diploma. Our
GED class will run from January 20, 2015, through June 4, 2015,
every Tuesday and Thursday evening from 6:00 - 8:30pm. The

Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Community,
I want to begin by thanking Parker
Oglesby for stepping into my shoes
for a day. As you know, Parker is a
remarkable person and could step into
just about anyone’s shoes. He was
able to experience, first hand, the
variety of things we deal with on a
day-to-day basis. We all thank him
for giving up his day to do this and for
all that he and his family do for our
school.
We would like to recognize Coach Chappell and Coach
Yacono for getting our girls basketball program off to a great
start. They have a very young team but they are playing like an
experienced one. The team is led by senior Ana Roldan. Other
team members are: Jasmine Lucas, Haylee Ellison, Natalie
Thompson, Ashlyn Goff, Lexie Hendrickson, Brandy Bowen, and
Jaya Osceola. We wish Coach Welch and her team the best as
they are preparing for the start of their season. Please come out
and support our student/athletes!

Each year the Church of
God youth groups from
around Florida come
together in November to compete in the
FYLA games which consist of
volleyball, basketball, foosball, PingPong, dodge ball and more!
This was my first year, but I had
heard so many great things about it. On
November 7 we took a charter bus to the
Church of God Wimauma Convention
Center. Foosball and Ping-Pong were
intense! We crowded around the tables,
each youth group shouting and chanting;
I was in shock how people get into it!
My favorite event from that night
was dodge ball. I wasn’t going to play
but had to replace a girl; I am so glad I
had a chance to play! I got the biggest
guy out in finals and was so proud of
myself. We ended up winning 1st place!
The next day I thought to myself
“What have I got myself into?” as I
made my way onto the sandy court. Each
team took their position at opposite ends
of the rope and picked it up, ready for
battle. All of a sudden my muscles
tensed up, and my arms and hands
automatically started working together,
pulling and holding onto the rope for
dear life. Nothing but my legs, feet, and
the people pulling in front of me help to
keep my stance and balance. My feet
start to slide. I grab onto the rope tighter,
not caring if I get blisters on my hands or
if I start to bleed. Because this was OUR
moment to prove we are capable to win
and nothing was going to stop us. All of
a sudden out of nowhere came this
strength that I didn’t even know I had. I
just kept pulling and tugging, and at
some point backed up as with each pull
the opponents were coming towards us.
Finally, I see the flag in the middle of the
rope cross our side. We all drop the rope
and jump into our Youth Groups’ arms,
filled with hugs and cheers. It was then
that we knew we had won one of the
hardest and most dangerous event of the
FYLA games, Tug-A-War.
After a long day of events, it was
time for the award ceremony. We ended
up getting 2nd place in Division A! I had
such an amazing experience with
amazing people and I cannot wait until
next year!

Recipe
Thanksgiving Sides Made Easy
by Patty Huff
Coming from a large family (12 kids), Thanksgiving was one of the best days of the year:
lots of cooking, lots of family and friends, and lots of love. I try to continue the tradition by
having an 18-20 lb turkey (whether we need it or not) and all the traditional side dishes.
Growing up in the South but with parents from New England, we had the usual squash and
green bean casseroles which can be quite filling. I now try to make healthier, lighter side
dishes but stay true to the Thanksgiving custom. These are easy.
Fresh Green Beans
Buy the French beans (haricorts verts) which are thin and delicate and pre-packaged, ready
to pop on the stove. Quickly blanch in boiling hot (salted) water for 4 to 5 minutes; drain
and drop into ice water to keep the bright green color. Sauté red pepper flakes (1/2 to 1 tsp)
and 2 garlic cloves (minced) in extra 1 TBS of virgin olive oil and 3 TBS butter. Add beans
and toss for about 5 minutes until well coated and thoroughly heated. Garnish with lemon
zest and serve immediately. Blanching the beans can be done in advance; this recipe just
takes about 10 minutes and can be prepared while someone else is cutting the turkey.
Roasted Summer Squash
The only way I can get some of my family members to eat squash is to mix cheese with it.
However, trying to keep the calories down, I think roasting vegetables is the healthiest way
to enjoy them; so I compromise. This recipe can be adjusted for as many people you plan to
serve. Just cut summer yellow squash into ¼ inch slices, then halve. Toss with olive oil,
salt and pepper and a little garlic powder (if you wish). Place on a cookie sheet in a single
layer and bake in a pre-heated oven at 400° for 10-15 minutes. Sprinkle with grated
Parmesan cheese.

Slow down as manatees start their
swim to warmer waters
The annual migration of Florida manatees to warmer waters
begins in November, which is Manatee Awareness Month. The
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC)
encourages boaters to help protect migrating manatees by looking
out and slowing down for these aquatic mammals that often rest
or congregate underwater and can be difficult to see. FWC
encourages the public to celebrate manatees by learning more
about these gentle giants. Boaters slowing down and watching out
for manatees can help protect this species from injury. Anyone
who spots a manatee that is injured, entangled in fishing line or
otherwise in distress can help initiate a rescue by calling the
FWC’s Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-3922.

The call of this small, chicken-like bird gives away its
presence in the flatwood pine forests it prefers. Its call is also its
name, b-bob-white. The bobwhite has experienced a precipitous
drop in population since the 1950s, with more than a 65 percent
decline in the past 20 years. While some of this can be attributed
to the removal of almost all of Florida’s long-leaf pine forests, the
exact reasons for the disappearance of this small game bird from
the landscape are not well understood.
One of the best locations to find these members of the quail
family is at the Babcock/Webb Wildlife Management Area in
eastern Charlotte County. There, in collaboration with hunting
clubs, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is
attempting to reestablish a permanent breeding population. While
it is still a game bird in Florida with daily bag limits set at 12 per
day, the bobwhite has recently been classified as a near-threatened
species by the IUCN because of the dramatic population decline
found throughout its range. This is one of only a few instances
where the local conservation efforts lag behind the leadership of
the IUCN.
Because the bobwhite is a prolific breeder, laying clutches of
10 to 15 eggs at a time, there is every reason to believe that with
proper management and the kind of habitat reconstruction that is
being done today at Babcock/Webb, the bobwhite will someday
return to its historic populations. The adult bird is a favorite prey
for owls, falcons, hawks, and bobcats, while the eggs and chicks
suffer predation from feral cats, skunks, opossums, and fire ants.

Florida Tales
"The Leaves were Falling
and the Mountains Calling"

We have lived down in the flatland of
south FL for most of our lives; my wife
Marta and I decided to head north on a
trip to North Georgia. We boarded a
plane at RSW in Ft. Myers and left with
our daughter Kim and her husband Mark
Cherney. It was in the high 80s.
Before landing at
Atlanta (ATL) Airport
the pilot announced it
was 50 degrees and a
slight SW wind. Cheers came from some
of the passengers as well as us. ATL is a
large Airport and it took a while to get to
where the car was rented and to head
north. As soon as we left, we could see
some good color in the leaves. We were
headed to the cabin in Blue Ridge,
getting to the higher elevations where the
color was in peak season: reds, yellows,
orange and many more. Also, the apples
were in season;
quite a thrill to an
old country boy
who has always
been around citrus.
We got to the
cabin and started the best vacation we
ever had. No driving to do; just look, sit
back and take pictures. The fireplace was
lit and the heat was kept to a small
flicker after warming up. Next day we
were off to join hundreds of other
"leafers" to enjoy the scenes painted by
Mother Nature across the mountains and
valleys. We had a bucket list of things to
do. Next day we went riding on the back
less traveled roads and found waterfalls,
springs bubbling up and farmers baling
the last hay of the season. We went to a
Gem Mine where we found a few rubies
and other keepers. Also on the bucket list
was looking in the Antique Stores in the
areas we traveled. Each afternoon we
would sit on the back porch overlooking
the mountain across the valley and take a
photo each day of the changing leaves.
After 9 days it was time to head back
to Florida with all the beautiful sights in
our mind and pictures to share. We were
glad to come back to the flatland and
saltwater we love so much. A special
thanks to Mark and Kim for the best
vacation ever.

Friends of the Museum Annual Meeting
We are very happy to announce that Robert S. Carr, Executive Director of the
Archaeological and Historical Conservancy (AHC) in Davie, will be the guest speaker at
our annual meeting and luncheon. In 1985, AHC began its first project with excavations at
the Cutler Fossil site in Miami-Dade County and subsequently has documented over 1000
sites throughout Florida. Projects have included investigations at the Miami Circle, Ten
Thousand Islands, the Ortona Canals, Fort Pierce, Okeechobee Battlefield and Fort Van
Swearingen.
If you would like to support the Museum of the Everglades, you are invited to become a
member and attend our annual luncheon meeting on Monday, December 8, at noon at
Everglades Isle Lighthouse Club. Mr. Carr will also be available to autograph his book

Off the Shelf Book Review
“Tales of Southern Rivers”
by Zane Grey and reviewed by Marya Repko
This book, first published in 1924, is a mixture of fishing tales (especially for tarpon) and
travelogue.
Zane Grey (1872-1939) is better known for his westerns but he was an avid angler and
explored the south Florida coast thoroughly in his quest for the large catch.
With his brother and a charter captain, Grey visited the rivers of the Everglades from
Cape Sable to Fakahatchee (spelt "Thickahatchie" instead of "Fikahatchee" as it was
pronounced). He describes the mangroves and mosquitoes of the estuaries and the shell
mounds on Chokoloskee. He was impressed by the vastness of the Everglades with waving
sawgrass and intrigued by the Seminole families that survived so remotely.
Grey had strong views about conservation, writing that releasing fish was probably a
mistake because they would leave a trail of blood and become prey for sharks. He said
"liberated fish" was only an excuse to catch more and advocated daily limits.
Besides visiting Flagler's luxury fishing camp on Long Key (see Rapper 8/1/14), Grey
is known to have stayed at the Rod & Gun Club here. The Zane Grey Western Society
(www.zgws.org) is planning to hold their annual conference in the spring of 2016 in
Florida and will be visiting our area.

I guess “Ole Slim” is now pulling and dragging me,
Dropping me to the ground in a crumpled up heap.
And as twilight draws near, lying in the cold, drizzling rain,
I pray to God, “God, please, just please let me get some sleep.”
I awake this morning with the shakes and shivers.
The chill has traveled to my tired ole bones.
The wind whips, whistles and dances a rhythm,
Shaking and threatening my cardboard home.
As I crawl to my wet, sagging, cardboard castle,
I grab the wrinkled paper which will serve as my blanket tonight.
And as I lay my weary head down for one last time,
I realize I am deathly drunk; reality has again lost the fight.
Outside the tense traffic is hustling and bustling.
Dirty exhaust fumes fill the morning air.
Horns are blowing n angry drivers are screaming,
Cabbies are screeching to a halt, picking up another fare.
And as I surrender and gasp my last breath of air,
I feel my bruised, broken heart beat for the last time today.
I feel the gates of Hell open to free my tormented soul;
I feel the angels tugging, tugging and blessedly taking me away.
Next door I hear “Ole Slim” a coughing,
Gurgling and coughing as I've never heard him before.
Then he curses his lady of the evening.
“Get up, get out, get out of here you ignorant bore.
A welcomed warmth engulfs my very being, and I fight no more.
For death has mercifully had its final say.
And the song I hear my children keep singing and singing,
“Papa’s home, Papa’s home, our Papa’s come home to stay.”
As I look around and try to make sense of all this,
I wipe the matted sleep from my blood-shot eyes.
And as the sweet dreams of home slowly fade away,
There are no tears, but deep inside I begin to cry.
Where God? Where did my beautiful children go?
And where is my loving “till death do us part” wife?
And those precious words still echo through my lonely heart,
“Papa’s home”, those two words that meant my very life.

As I strain and stumble to get to my swollen feet,
I feel a sharp pain digging like a dagger into my left side.
I suspect my kidneys, they must be almost gone by now.
Ah, but with enough whiskey or wine, the hurting will soon
subside.
And as “Ole Jack Frost” nips at my unshaven face,
I turn my torn collar to the gloomy, overcast sky.
Quickly I fall in behind “Ole Slim” for a lesson of survival.
Learning today how to beg, borrow or steal, and not ask why.
And as the morning rolls on and on, people ever so rude,
“Ole Slim” and I keep singing, “hey buddy can you spare a dime”
I hold out my bowl, longing for turkey and dressing,
But realize the truth; I'm standing in a crowded soup line.
Today is Thanksgiving, but we drink more than we eat,
For there’s a beer store on every corner lot.
Then out somewhere someone produces a treat; corn liquor.
And to top it off, someone has lit some sweet smelling pot.
And as I drink myself into complete oblivion,
I feel myself falling and hitting my head against the wall.
Drifting into unconsciousness, I can hear my children singing.
They're singing, “Papa’s home, our Papa’s home after all.”
An eternity later I open my weary eyes.
My visions dull, my body's dirty, tired and sore.
The back of my head feels like it’s been beat with a hammer.
The pool of blood has started to dry on the dingy, concrete floor.
“Ole Slim” grins at me through half rotted , black teeth
And lifts my throbbing head for another healing drink.
The liquor scorches the back of my swollen throat,
Washing away the vomit and some of the stink.

DEEP SOUTH COBRA CLUB
Annual Reptile Roundup
Everglades City was the destination this year for the 14th annual
“Reptile Roundup” sponsored by the Deep South Cobra Club
whose members own replicas of the 1965 Shelby Cobra roadsters.
Over 20 cars visited the Revs Institute for Automotive Research
(The Collier Collection) in Naples before driving here on
November 8 for lunch at the historic Rod & Gun Club. The Deep
South Cobra Club’s 200 members include car owners from
Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia and Georgia.
Carroll Hall Shelby, who died in 2012, was an American
automotive designer, racing driver and entrepreneur. He was best
known for his involvement with the AC Cobra which sold as the
Ford/Shelby AC Cobra in the United States and often known
colloquially as the Shelby Cobra.
The Deep South Cobra Club was established by Jerry Rowley
in 2000, and the first Reptile Roundup was organized in 2001.
With the largest group of cobra owners living in Florida, the
annual Reptile Roundups have been held in various locations
throughout Florida. Everglades City was happy to be included in
one of their visits.
The club is open to all Cobra enthusiasts and Cobra owners.

Twenty-one veterans were recognized by
members of the Everglades Community
Church for their service in the military.
One of the veterans was Dave Naske
who joined the Navy at age 17 and served
four years, ranked as 1st class Petty
Officer on cruisers, including "landing
craft" on Normandy Beach. After a short
leave home Dave was assigned to Western
Pacific aboard the U.S.S. Boston Cruiser.
His ship bombarded the enemy protecting
Carrier groups when Japan surrendered.
Dave was one of 52 Veterans
recognized October 18 on a Collier Honor
Flight to Washington, D.C., where each
one was given a private escort along with
a bus tour of all the Memorials in DC. Our
Veterans
returned to Ft.
Myers Airport
at 11:30 pm
where
they
were met by
police escorts
along
with
hundreds
of
people
cheering them
back.
Dave
said, "It was a Trip of a Lifetime!"
